Hey guys.
My brother wants to change some system files on his stock 4.4.2 G2 which requires root.
Problem is, he uses some apps which can only run on non-rooted phones. So two questions:
Can he root his G2, change system files, and then 100% un-root without having to flash KDZ file etc? He does not need any custom recovery like TWRP. He wants to edit with Root Explorer and then he wants to unroot.
Is this possible and if so, should he use Towelroot or ioroot25?
Thanks!

Okay well yes it is possible to root change the files and then unroot but he will not be able to 100% unroot
Once you root the g2 there are some areas which will get triggered kind of like a flag going from white(unrooted) to red(rooted) and the only way to completely remove those traces of root is to kdz back to stock
You can root using towelroot or ioroot25 main differences is one needs a pc and other doesn't, if you really want to root you can always consider apps like hide my root or root cloak from the playstore which work very well for hiding root access from apps which cannot be used while rooted

Yes that guide says unroot but the process is very similar to kdz to stick in which it overwrites the system with the stock one and will of course revert any changes the used wants to make

Am I wrong in thinking to get FULL unroot, download mode and everything, you need to use the tot and not the kdz?

both kdz/tot will get you fully unrooted(although some early kitkat kdz files were giving rooted status even though user was not this was fixed with other kk updates/kdz files)
ok so im a lil confused, i want to completly un root, so i need tot and kdz? or just one i tried using kdz and for some reason it wont work
here is rhe short way :
unroot = flashing stock firm no matter kdz or tot
so whats the best way to do that?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
The easiest thing to do is to go to the supersu app, settings and find the full unroot . i don't know or LG can see that you rooted but i guess so then you need to reflash kdz or tot.
See the link from @zekurosu for the easy guide to return back to stock with kdz or tot flashing.
Before you do this please recharge your phone to atleast 80% and for the safest thing to 100% while doing this. Also read the steps carefully
its easy

Alright, so - I just got my hands on a Note 3 from a friend in Canada, aaaand naturally the first thing I wanna do with it is root it and stick a ROM on it. But most of the guides I've come across are somewhat outdated, and I'm a little hesitant to follow an outdated guide in case there's a mismatch of some sort with the kernel, bootloader, etc. I really don't wanna brick the thing the same day I get it.
It's on Build Number LRX21V.N900W8VLU2DOH1, Android 5.0/Lollipop, kernel 3.4.0-4348112. Reactivation Lock is off in settings. Again, it's a Canadian phone, and I believe the original carrier was Telus (it's not unlocked but he's going to get me the unlock code later today, supposedly)
I looked through the CF-AutoRoot list and I don't see this particular version available, but I think I saw in a thread on here that other AutoRoot packages will work with it.
I'm not totally clueless here, I've fiddled with my Galaxy S3 plenty and managed not to brick it, but I'd rather look before I leap.

Sweet. Do I have anything to worry about with flashing roms, KNOX, etc.?
Flashing twrp will trip the Knox counter and supersu will disable Knox.

Alrighty. I'm not too worried about the Knox counter as long as that doesn't have any bad implications for the device (no rom flashing or something), I'm certainly not gonna be claiming any warranties.
You need to flash twrp if you want to install a custom rom.
Yup, done, SuperSU's installed and root appears to work! Thanks for the advice. Now I just need to figure out why the back button stopped working. I read there's some custom kernel that fixes this.
EDIT: Yeah, idleKernel fixed the back button.

idleKernel is sorta defunct nowadays, I think, but I think I've found a mirror for you here: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/0By1qJV6BVww0NHRfX2tzNjJLWEE
If you have an N900W8, you want hlte-can. Honestly, though, it's been so long since I used idleKernel that I'm not 100% sure this is compatible with stock OH1 - best to make a backup with TWRP first.

If you want my advice -
1. Install TWRP 2.8.7.0 (use 2.8.7.0, not 3.x, because 3.x is incompatible with a lot of installers in case you want a custom ROM later on) using Odin (volume down + home when powering on to access download mode for Odin)
2. Make a backup from TWRP (hold volume up + home key when powering on, then choose Backup and check everything, make sure you have room on your microSD card)
3. Install SuperSU from recovery
4. Install idleKernel using the zip file from recovery
That should get you rooted with no issues, and if there's any problem you have a backup to restore from.
Why do you just want to root and install TWRP ??
To do backup
But if you know a good custom rom please send a link to me
Custom rom you want one that works well on your specific model.

Yes just one
I have root and install twrp yet
Introduction
Due to popular demand I have created a flashable zip from the official firmware released on 2016 July 12th (Version MM 30G)
Pre-requisite
If you haven't root/bump/TWRP already, read the tutorial here.
Disclaimer
I will not be responsible if you brick your phone. Use this tutorial at your own risk. Read the entire tutorial before proceeding.
How to use
To do a clean install:
Go into TWRP -> Wipe system/data -> Format system -> Flash the ROM zip.
To do an update without losing data/apps
Go into TWRP -> Flash the zip.
To get root
Flash my rooted boot.img -> Flash SuperSU V2.79.
If you an boot error, just flash the rooted boot.img again.
Only flash SuperSU V2.79 or above.
The only partitions that will be touched are the system and boot partitions. Bootloader and recoveries will not be touched, so after flashing to new ROM you can go back to TWRP and flash any custom zips!
I also provided a bumped boot.img on the side for those who want to use it with other Marshmallow custom ROMs like Fulmics.
If you want to get root for the stock ROM, you have to flash the rooted boot.img, then install SuperSU from play store. This is currently the only way to get root on official Marshmallow.
I don't have time to remove the bloatwares yet. So if you removed the LG bloatwares previously, they will be back.
Download
D852 Telus/Koodo MM 30G Stock ROM
D852 Telus/Koodo MM Bumped boot.img (no root, use this to unroot)
Rooted boot.img (Flash this to root #Rooted version 2.79)
SuperSU V2.79
Visit my blog for more G3 tutorials
Thanks, just wondering what the bump.img is for and why it is needed to flash another ROM.

Perfect. Can the boot.img be flashed with TWRP instead of Imageprep? Say I flash Fulmics at some point or any other ROM (that has root), then immediately after flash your boot.img within recovery to overwrite the Rogers kernel that most ROMs come with. Just making sure. This extra step is for those with a Telus/Koodo variant of the G3

Yep, as long as the ROM is based on stock you shouldn't have problem flashing stock kernel.

It seems LG released the same MM kernel for all variants in Canada. Theoretically it should work for Rogers too.
You can try it out to see if there's any bugs. If it doesn't work you can just flash back your original boot image (make sure to back up boot partition first!).
Let us know if it works.
Thanks you.
Does anybody have a success story to share about updating without wiping ?

Thanks hdlineage,
If you dont mind i would like to confirm some steps?
I am on rogers MM OTA so i am complete stock.
So i download the kitkat-aboot.img, kitkat-laf.img and twrp
Use your imgprep program to install the img's and twrp.
then back up the current boot.img in twrp, then flash the modified you provided, correct.
Then i could either flash a super user.zip or install super user from the playstore?
Thanks for your work

For imageprep to work you will need to downgrade to lollipop first.
It won't work with MM. Currently you need custom recovery to root MM.

In order to root using the method described in this thread, you must already been rooted with a bumped TWRP when you were on Lollipop. Refer to OP and the "Requirement" section if you need more information.
If you were not rooted with bumped TWRP previously, then you have two options:
1) Downgrade to LP by using LGUP, root/bump using ImagePrep, then flash according to instructions on this thread
2) Wait for ImagePrep to be updated for MM compatibility and then root (and/or install bumped TWRP).
Your propose method may fail since you are on MM already and ImagePrep is currently compatible with either KK or LP only. If your method works, please let this community know.
There are other root methods available such as the one-click method http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/guide-root-method-lg-devices-t3129197, but I am unable to validate them since I used ImagePrep method on LP only.

Surprised there is no modem.img in the update?
Did the baseband version change?
Mine is a Rogers D852 but is unlocked and was not OTA updated past Lollipop.
The baseband version showing is: MPSS.DI.2.0.1.c1.13-00053-M8974AAAAANPZM-1
Can anyone confirm a change in baseband?
Is there any flashable file available for fido users.?
delete, Rogers should be the same as Fido but can't confirm

It is the same (use bumped zip) from this thread. I have a Koodo G3 unlocked on the FIdo network configured with Fido APN and it works. No issues yet, have not tested GPS or Bluetooth. Since there is no baseband update, I don't think there will be any issues.
My Fulmics install failed to boot and was stuck on LG logo with flashing green & blue led. Stock MM bumped zip install works just fine.
Which boot image should I have used and what about installing SuperSU?
Current root methods in OP fails. Tried both boot images and tried bumped boot image. Supersu failed on version 2.65, 2.67, 2.68, 2.70.
hdlineage: keep getting the error message it is failing to patch the boot.img since Supersu detects boot is already patched. Any ideas?

I can't find on Google realyble source
The simplest way would be to flash twrp using Odin. Then use twrp to flash the custom ROM. You'll need a computer to do this.
Kingroot does not root NOTE3 (at least not new firmwares) so far I know.

To flash a custom ROM, you could use Odin to flash TWRP and then flash a custom ROM from TWRP. I have used this procedure on the note 2, note 3, s3, and s4.
Afaik, only the USA note 3, other than the T-Mobile note 3, have locked bootloaders.
As above.
Some roms are rooted.

Thx for links I will read all of that.

Finally! i have rooted my phone, but now i have problem to install recovery,i have two thimes bricked my phone. is the safest way to install it with odin..?
Odin + TWRP.tar file
For model and version required for rom.
Some mobile app for that?
When I try to go to recovery I get message:
Fail to normal boot to recovery
Odin mode error
..
Downloading Mode
..
Something like that..
I try with Odin to install recovery. I find file twrp-3.2.1-0-ha3g.img.tar,try couple time and very time is the same, I get message when I try to go to recovery, could not normal boot.
Usual is wrong TWRP used .
The recovery you flashed is for Exynos models .Do you have that model ??
I think that I have snapdragon, where can see that info?
I try about phone but I don't see that info there..
Sooory I know that I am bodering you and everyone else. .

I get these two picture. How to know wich Twrp to install?
It was much easier when I root my note 1 last year, this is very hard when I am doing it with computer..
Device used to run fulmics before but now it is on stock MM. I'd really like to try /e/ os but can't unlock bootloader since there is no enable oem unlocking option and I think it would anyway need an unlock code no longer provided? I tried using kingroot older version, that got me root for a while, so I tried installing twrp with official twrp app. It failed, now there is neither twrp nor stock recovery. Desperately I tried newer version of kingroot, which has basically infected my phone, can't uninstall it. Stumproot claims phone is rooted.
Would one click root work better on older android version? I tried using flash tool 2014 to downgrade, cse flash complains about something missing, can't remember what it was, then tried several KDZs on windows 7 usb2, it gets me little further but fails at 4%. Getting rid of kingroot would be nice even if the device is impossible to root. Help would be greatly appreciated. It is still even today a great phone and I would hate to throw it away.
You need to downgrade to KitKat and root using purpledrake I think it's called. Then flash TWRP with the app.

You could try going from a temporary root to permanent by downloading an older version of magisk that is compatible with your version of Android and using it to root.
You need LGUP (which is newer than "Flash Tool") to downgrade from MM to KK. Then you can use "One Click Root" or the likes to root and flash a suitable (= bumped) TWRP to Recovery. It's all described here and elsewhere on the net. (I learned it that way, too.) Do not try to fiddle around with MM--the MM bootloader will just throw an error if you try to boot anything but the original LG-signed images, and the MM modem will not load with older bootloaders.

Yeah, lgup says unknown model and I have spent hours trying to figure out that too. I tried at least lgup with uppercut, didn't work. It is getting harder to search as my head is exploding.
Never mind, I got it to /e/. Had to use autorec for MM, which worked once I got temp root with kingroot. This is how I installed fulmics before, had just forgotten about it. /e/ is very nice but device ram is barely enough. Thanks for trying to help.
