I messed up for sure. Need help - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically what I did was follow this guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
I used step number 9 to install the MHC19I update while I was on Pure Nexus ROM and Elemental X Kernel. Then, I went ahead and dirty flashed the newer version of the ROM and kernel, but I made a nandroid back-up beforehand on TWRP 3.0.0.1. So when it finished and reboot, none of the apps worked. Everything I tried to open gave me a message saying "unforunately X has stopped" with a report and ok button options. Couldn't really use the phone at all. So I tried restoring the back up that I made and now it's either 1)taking a really long time or 2) not booting up at all because all it says is Google with the white unlocked lock at the bottom and hasn't changed.
I'm pretty sure I messed up pretty bad, so I'd appreciate some guidance on what to do. Thank you

If you followed step 9 you should be on the latest vendor, bootloader and radio. Go to the pure nexus thread and download the the newest Gapps release. I would verify the rom download and make sure it wasn't corrupted. Maybe redownload it to make sure. Boot in to TWRP and go to advance wipe. Select everything except internal data. Once it is wiped go to install and flash PureNexus rom, Gapps and then your custom kernal if you wish. You should be good to go after that.

Thanks, I will try this right now. Just a question though, once I download Gapps, how do I flash it on the phone since I don't have it downloaded on my phone?

The problem is most likely that you dirty flashed the ROM. Also, what partitions did you backup/restore?

Worse comes to worst, you can just flash the factory image to boot back up

You can add gapps to your phone using adb or just connect your phone to your computer when you are in TWRP, your computer should recognize your phone's internal storage and you can just move it there.

You can download it in your PC then just plug your phone in and transfer the file over. Your phone will most likely be defaulted to USB charge mode though. Once you plug it in to your USB port an option on your phone should pop up to be able to change it to mtp file transfer. Then just copy the file to your internal storage, reboot in to TWRp and flash it in the steps above.

I use Superbeam a lot to transfer files from my computer to my phone if I don't want to find the plug to hook up the phone to the computer. I have also used pushbullet to send the link to my phone, and then download the file directly to the phone.

[Q] [HELP] Want to return to stock

Hey xda,
So I'm on a Nexus 4 and I successfully rooted my device! Yay:good:. While that's great and all, I wanted to go for more, so I tried flashing the PAC ROM. I'll admit I didn't follow any directions. I just downloaded a zip for PAC Rom and GApps and saved it into my phone's internal storage on the computer. After that I went into recovery, wiped data and cache, then installed from sdcard while in recovery for both of them and assumed that would work, just like with SuperSU
Unfortunately, I don't like the ROM at all, especially with the fact that my keyboard does not work, the Play Store automatically shut down, and none of my apps were there. I tried deleting the rom and gapps from my phone's internal storage and installed SuperSU again but it keeps loading into PAC. How can I get back to stock? I know of the factory images on the Google Developers page but I know next to nothing about them so I would like to avoid that if I can. How can I fix my issue and how can I properly go about flashing a ROM so I can avoid this problem and not live up to my username as much.
For reference, I am using a Nexus 4 and I'm not concerned about losing anything, I have everything I need saved onto my computer

Deleting those file will do nothing except get rid of those two files from your storage, it's not going to get rid of your ROM that's been flashed. That's why it keep booting back into PAC ROM.
You really need to read and understand what you're doing before you brick your device.

You'll need to flash a the factory image to get back to stock.
Look at this threads
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
Also you should always do a nandroid backup before flashing anything, it will save you lot of times and headaches.
Wiping is also important when flashing ROM, especially going from one ROM to another.

[Q] Help! Nexus 4 stuck in bootloop after 4.4 update.

Hi guys,
I tried to update my Nexus 4 to 4.4 when Google pushed the update out for it yesterday, I forgot I had unlocked the phone (I don't have any custom ROMs on it, just SuperSU.)
Every time I try and power it on, the loading screen is endless, although I can hold power and volume down to enter recovery mode, nothing seems to be working.
I am a bit of a novice so any help or suggestions would be really appreciated!
Thanks.
The first few pages of the forum is littered with posts like this, i was in the same situation.
What i did was download the 4.3 rom from google, and flash /boot and /system onto the phone. I suspect the 4.4 rom would also work.
This got the phone booting without harming (most of) my data, but much of the UI was mangled and didnt work properly. I tried to backup my images over USB but it didnt work, you might have a better result. I also wanted to backup my SMS but they had all vanished.
I rebooted the phone to recovery (TWRP) and used adb to backup the sdcard (adb pull /sdcard sdcard) then did a full flash using the 4.4 rom downloaded from google and that got it working again. Then i reflashed the latest version of TWRP recovery and SuperSU.
Hope that helps.
That's really helpful, thanks! Is there ANY chance of a step-by-step? I'm a complete 'noob' probably a mistake to root in the first place :crying:
If you're busy don't worry, just don't want to **** things up more than I have haha.
Thanks, appreciate it.

Cheers guys, a lot more helpful than the bloke from Google. Will try it in the morning!
This will surely help
If somebody is facing boot loop after kitkat update on nexus 4 and no data backup can try to go to safe mode and backup their data. To goto safe mode on boot screen just keep pressing up and down volume button for some time phone will get into safe mode and can be backed up.
Hi,
It also happened to me, dont know if it is related to having ROOT or not, but i had to manually flash factory image (4.4) and it worked. I flashed everything except userimage.img but on first boot it took like 15 minutes to reboot and then all my personal data (photo, music...) was gone....
So just be cautious before upgrading!

Yeah that is pretty much what I did to fix mine except that I did not flash the userdata (step 10 in chapter D) so that I would't loose my data.

Installing the driver. Refer to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992345
Boot to bootloader and connect to your PC, usually Windows will find the driver automatically

[Q] Is Freedompop version unlockable?

I'll be switching to Freedompop soon and really want a phone I can customize with whatever I want like custom roms and rooting. This is all the information they seem to have on the site about there phone http://freedompop.com/devices/Samsung-Galaxy-S4-White. Any thoughts? Thanks
yes.
This might be a bit late answer but if you still haven't made the switch, my S4 came with freedompop's custom version of stock TouchWiz software and Phil's recovery.

Really? I was thinking about getting an s4, and wondered if I could flash CM or other roms.
I've been running the CyanogenMod official nightlies for several months now on my FreedomPop S4. Should be perfectly fine.

I use CM as well. But if you do, you should have a back up your original rom it came with first.
Also, if you can, do you think you could share the backup of the rom?

I made a Nandroid backup [1.76 GB] as soon as I received my second FreedomPop S4 as a warranty replacement. Both came with TWRP, but the new phone didn't have root access and came with KNOX on it. Looks like FreedomPop's builds vary widely, but if you have nothing else this should help. Just remember it's not a flashable zip, it's a zip file of my TWRP backup folder.

I get hold of a Sprint S4 with FreedomPop rom on it and it has not been activated with FreedomPop service yet.
I want to flash it back to the latest Sprint stock rom or custom roms. Can anyone provide what steps should I follow as I am new to this phone?

What you need before starting:
ROM
I can't really tell you how to pick a ROM, since there's so many options and things to take into account. I also don't know where to find a stock ROM. There are other threads devoted to ROMs and if you need help choosing one you really should start your own thread. The ROM I used to use is WizCyan S6 Edge, which is a port of the Galaxy S6 Edge software to the S4. I personally got sick of Samsung's bloatware and switched to CyanogenMod's official nightlies.
GApps
Short for Google Apps. These are what you need for Google Play support and other apps made by Google. I prefer to use Open GApps, though there's other GApps packages out there. I picked Open GApps' pico package because anything I want I can get off Google Play.
Then once you have a spare hour (mainly for backup and setup), try this:
Copy your ROM and GApps to an easy-to-access location on your phone (or a flash drive if you have one of the cool micro-USB ones)
Boot into Recovery. You can do this by powering on your phone while holding the volume up button. I don't know what recovery you have, but I'll guess TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project), which is what my FreedomPop S4 came with.
Make a Nandroid backup, which is pretty much a system image. If anything goes wrong, you can always restore this to get the factory image. In TWRP, you can do this by just tapping Backup. You should only need to backup Boot, System, and Data, but if it makes you feel better by all means backup Cache and EFS as well. I do suggest naming the backup to something you can recognize (the line is right above 'Select Partitions to Backup") and compressing the archive (Options tab). Nandroid backups are rather large, so compression helps if you're not going to move the backup off your phone or onto a large SD card.
Wipe Data, Cache, and Dalvik cache. In TWRP, it's the default option for "Wipe".
Install the ROM and GApps. Tap "Install", navigate the folder structure to find your ROM package, and tap it. Tap "Add more Zips" and find your GApps installation. Swipe to confirm the flash and wait.
Reboot. You should be greeted by the setup screen and be able to set up your new ROM.
Custom ROMs sometimes mess with the APN settings, so I recommend downloading one of the packages off this thread. If your cellular data isn't working correctly, just boot into TWRP and install the zip file. I'm currently testing out the latest package in the thread (this post at the time of writing), though I think the second post in that thread had a package that worked better for me.

Nexus 6p weird bootlooping.

Hello xda community!
I received the nexus 6p christmas and after a few hours playing with it, I unlocked, installed twrp and installed cm13. I then installed ak kernal. My phone installs both fine and runs as normal without any FC. Then this is where it gets weird. When I had my new rom and kernal all set up. I go into TWRP and create a backup. I restart and I'm bootlooping. It tells me my device is corrupt. It did this with the original backup of stock rom, cm13, with and without ak kernal installed... and then sometimes my phone will soft-brick (gets stuxk on google logo) I really love cm engine as I habe a theme. But I'm unsure what is happening to my phone.
Any help is appreciated! - thanks.

The bootloader message won't go away until you lock the bootloader. Its just there as a warning to you in case you did not unlock your phone. As for CM I'm sure there are still many bugs to be worked out. I know I'm going to wait before Flashing it until I see people enjoying it as a daily driver. There are some great devs here in the n6p forums though so I recommend checking out some other ROMs too.

Maybe this will be helpful. I think you have the red level warning like this user. Seems like the exact same situation.

Turns out it isn't bootlooping. Its taking at least 3 minutes to turn on. It looks like bootlooping. BUt if finally loaded. After doing my uninstalling of aomw system apps. Its rebooted and keeps optimising apps. 2-4 then restarts and does same

No it isn't necessary to wipe the userdata partition. No modifications are stored in the userdata partition. It would only be necessary to wipe system, data, cache, and dalvik cache. And probably flash the vendor partition too. Not userdata though.
I had a similar problem when I botched a SU flash, same warning then it would take forever to boot, then the rom would degrade over the next several minutes. I know its not fun to start over, but it was the only thing that cleared all the problems. I didn't want to take more time finding another solution when going back to stock is so simple with this device. Follow the instructions in step #11 of Heisenberg's guide (great guide, I link it to friends a lot). Then start again, I know, not what you wanted to hear. Hope this helps!
I am also in agreement with Heisenberg in regards to the userdata partition.

Thank you very much for replying. I have found the root of the cause but no solution. Uninstalling or disabling system apps will cause my phone to go into a "optimising apps" boot loop on the next restart. What do you think? ++ every restore I make on twrp either soft bricks or bootloops. Crazy!

If you are sure about reason Forget ur Backups.
you should completely install Stock Kernel, Rom, Boot.img >> Back to Stock
But If I remember correctly u did this before...
I just have to say Retry Also Install and use Nexus Root Toolkit

I have reinstalled original stock files from google. I've wiped everything numerous times. Installed ROMs just after. It took me a while but I think it comes down to the system apps. I'm running a custom ROM, cm13 and my phone is running fine. I know if I was to delete all the unwanted apps off my phone, on next reboot it will try and optimise apps, finish. Says starting apps... Then reboots. Follows the same process.

Can I ask what gapps are you using? Are you using your google account to recover your apps, or are starting fresh each time?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Thanks for your reply. I've actually now narrowed itnright down to a few apps, maybe gapps. Sound recorder, voice recorder app and the google app. Either one or more of these cause my optimising apps bootloop.

HELP!! I am stuck inside of TWRP and cannot boot into the system

Hey everyone, I have a really frustrating problem, I am currently able to boot into TWRP via hardware method and ADB can see my device as well. However I have tried to install a stock system image through TWRP and I have also tried to install another TWRP backup that a user had posted in the Q&A forum. At one time I was able to successfully boot into the system but my device said encryption unsuccessful. After wiping the system partition and trying to install these images through TWRP I am still unable to boot into the system. Whenever I install them my phone will reboot into TWRP. I am at a loss as to what to do. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would appreciate it.

I saw your other post in the other thread, but couldn't reply for some reason.. did you wipe the internal storage before restore?
Yes I did wipe the internal storage, I actually wiped everything the first time I tried to get everything in order and that was my original problem by wiping the system. I didn't realize that wiping internal storage would cause issues but that could have been one of the culprits. I think what finally solved my issue is I installed a deodexed rom and then powered down my device instead of rebooting and it booted up the rom. I had to flash SuperSU from a zip because for some reason the one that was preinstalled with that rom didn't install properly. So I installed the SuperSU zip and I am now officially rooted. Lesson learned DON'T WIPE SYSTEM OR INTERNAL STORAGE lol. I should have known better I have been rooting for awhile now, I just wasn't paying attention it happens to the best of us sometimes. Thanks for your help.

I used the deodexed ROM that is in the development forum. If I can upload it here I will if not just download it put it on your SD card and flash it. It may take a couple tries though I would suggest powering down your phone instead of rebooting it. Then turn it on and it should boot into the new rom. It's basically the same stock rom that our phone comes with. You may have to flash Chainfires SUPERSU zip that's in one of the threads. These steps should get you up and running again. Also if you can see your internal storage you're not encrypted. Hopefully that works for you. Let me know how it goes.
I wasnt able to upload the file from my phone. Just download it from here.

Flashing the rom helped me out. It's a system image file. It's basically the stock rom for our device just deodexed. What exactly happened what did you wipe after your phone booted into
TWRP? If you still have TWRP you're not bricked. If you can flash that image from the thread I copied above then you should be good. You may have to flash SUPERSU to get root back. Also after you flash make sure you're not encrypted if you can see your internal storage partition then you're not encrypted.

when I flashed the rom from your link above it just booted me into twrp again . I don't know what exactly I'm suppose to wipe. I can see internal storage tho so I guess that's a good sign but what's not good is that I can't use my phone :/ I've been rooting for years and can't seem to figure this one out.

When you flashed the rom did you power the phone down and then try to boot into the rom? That's what I did and it worked for me. So don't select reboot into system, I'm not sure why it doesn't work that way. I had to power my device down and then boot into the room. Also if you can see your internal partition in TWRP then you should be good and encryption is not enabled. I know how frustrating this is. Just keep trying eventually that rom should stick.

There a stock rom that I posted a link to a few posts back when I trying to help someone else. Download it put it on your SD card and install it. You don't need to wipe anything it will format things for you. After it installs don't reboot, power down the device and then turn it back on it should boot into the rom. That's what worked for me. I believe there was another way then what I just described it's in the same thread that I linked a few posts back. Good luck!!

Thanks for the help brother. However, it did not work for me. I flash the stock system, boot, turn device off and turn back on but I am still stock on TWRP. I will continue reading and hopefully I will find the answer soon.
thank you,:crying:

Np don't give up, I almost lost hope and then it worked for me.
Like I said there was another method that was discussed that worked for someone else. Try this thread, I know someone had the same issue that you and I had and they finally got it working.

Same. Though I am on US996. Not sure what I did, was exploring some behind the scenes stuff using 'hidden codes' but didn't change any values as I didn't know what they meant in most cases. I rebooted my phone and it went straight to TWRP (3.0.2-1) and it will not boot past TWRP. Occasionally after I've flashed something, it will boot into TWRP and the screen will be unresponsive to touch so I have to pull the battery, but then it will be fine again.
I was in your position not to long ago, I'm currently working on getting a .kdz recovery file for the H918. My progress will continue on it later when finals are over.
