looking to root nexus 4 for the first time - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello everyone,
I am thinking of rooting my nexus 4 phone so i can upgrade to Marshmellow CM13. i have a nexus 7 that i have rooted many times but it is the WiFi only version and never rooted anything that has a cell connection before and considering i only have one cellphone i am a little hesitant.
the biggest question i have is how much should i be concerned about rooting and installing a custom ROM will delete my IMEI number? also when rooting and installing the ROM should i remove the SIM card?
thanks

None of the concerns you have are real. Root has nothing to do with your IMEI . You do not need to remove SIM card, although if you want to be careful, you can remove SIM card before root and nothing will be affected (just for your peace of mind).
You should get Marshmallow on your device, it will breathe a new life into it.
As for the rooting procedure, there are tons of resources available. You can basically get the toolkit, adb drivers and everything else is pretty self explanatory, step by step procedure outlined in the toolkit.

Rooting is not required to install a custom rom. All you need to do is install twrp and flash cm13 from twrp.

thank you for clearing that up for me. i was looking to eventually upgrade to marshmallow on my phone with a custom ROM since google stopped supporting it so i am going to see if the first release of CM13 will be stable enough.

I would suggest installing AOSP 6.0 ROM, with YayPrime kernel. Or you can get a ROM that supports Layers and get GravityBox module which has everything for customizing your phone to your liking.
I found that CM overall has few bugs that get carried over from one version to another. I also found it to be a bit aggressive on the battery but that is totally dependent on the user. Enjoy :good:

I have a stock nexus 4.. running 5.1.1. Is there any benefit with me rooting the phone and putting on android 6? As google did not officially release android 6 for the nexus 4, will everything work on my nexus 4 if I install it? Sorry for the newbie questions but I have never rooted or installed a custom ROM before.
Thanks

Same here. I installed CM13 yesterday without problems and I'm looking forward to receive updates for my phone since it still suits my needs.

Root is not required to install a custom rom. You only need a custom recovery to install a custom rom.
Although flashing ROMs may affect the efs folder that contains the imei information, it has never happened to me. Several members recommend keeping an efs backup somewhere safe just in case.

Tried two roms, getting the 'com.android.phone' has stopped responding (immediately)

I've tried Paranoid Android 4.6 and CM 11, both with the same result.
I could not get any custom bootloader to install, aside from safestrap. This seems to be on there ok now, and I can install PA or CM roms from my sd card.
When they are finished installing though (along with Gapps), when it boots into the OS I instantly get the popup telling me the process com.android.phone has stopped. I hit ok and it comes back immediately, no matter how many times I hit it. I can't get into the menus or setup screens, the popup comes back instantly.
Since PA and CM both did this same thing, I am guessing my problem is perhaps not the rom. Any ideas please on what I might try next? The phone is basically bricked at this point.

Yea, you can't flash cm or pa on your device. They can only be flashed on devices with the mdb or mdl bootloader. If you're using safestrap, and it's the only recovery you can use, you're probably on 4.4.4, nb1 or nc1 or nj4, bootloader. You'll need tw based roms. See the ones that work with safestrap.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app
Thank you,
I flashed to NJ4 after rooting. Could you recommend any custom rom that is tw based please, or am I basically limited to stock?
I tried flashing a new TW rom but now I'm stuck in a recovery mode bootloop (safestrap seems to be gone).
edit: tw = touchwiz? (Sorry, I'm new at this).
Really appreciate the explanation, thanks again.

Your stuck to 4.4.4 unless you do the method mentioned on the forums and GoldenEye comments.
But a caution its not for the new, is risky and you lose the safestrap recovery boot because safestrap is not lollipop compatible right now.
Got it. Thank you.
I finally found a 'stock' firmware that I managed to load via Odin. Looks like AT&T just pushed the lollopop update to my phone as well so I guess stock lollipop will work for me until I upgrade my phone.
Out of interest, I'm looking at the oneplus one phone. Am I correct in thinking I should have way less problems trying to root & install custom roms on that, since it comes loaded with CM and the carrier isn't going to be constantly fixing exploits that allow root?
Really appreciate the help guys, thanks again.

I don't own it so I couldn't tell you but I would look up the forum for it before hand and see what they say about it.
If it's not an ATT and Verizon phone most likely it's not boot loader locked.

Oneplus you will be able to root and recovery, I believe even unlock the bootloader. You just have to pay full price of the phone of course, but it's separate from carrier so no root patching OTAs.
Awesome. Thank you so much guys. I think I'm going to try out the oneplus one. Sounds like it'll be a lot more straightforward than with AT&T's devices.

Any ROM without root?

So, long story short my mum had an iPhone 5, and she wanted a larger phone. The 6 and 6 Plus were way too expensive, so I said to get the Note 4. She loved it, at first. She then started to get more and more angry at it, since TouchWiz crashed often. So I said I'd custom ROM it, after all, I had done the same to my step dad's S5, he's pleased now. BUT, CM12 nightlies aren't exactly stable, and she gets crashing and stuff. Plus, she wants to be able to use her banking app, since it blocks phones with root. It works fine on my OnePlus One with Paranoid Android. Is there any kind of ROM for the Note 4, any PA ROM, any ROM without root? And no, I'm not putting it back on a TouchWiz based ROM.
How can you have a rom without root? You've already rooted it to put a custom rom on it.
Anyways I'm on TeKXodus 5.01 rom right now and its WAY better than stock. Check out his thread.

You can install a rom and then simply un-root it afterwards. This gives you custom rom without root

I see this very often, but it isn't true.
you don't need to root for a custom rom.
on most devices (including the note 4) you need a custom recovery and an unlocked bootloader(it's often unlocked out of the box) for a custom rom.
some device(like gen8 archos devices) even allow custom roms with the official recovery thanks to a developer mode, or they don't have a signature check and just let you flash custom roms through an official updating utility(such as the old advent vega which accepted custom roms flashed through nvflash)

Please help upgrading Nexus 7 stock 4.4.4

About a year ago I was going to upgrade my nieces stock Nexus 7 wi-fi tablet on 4.4.4 but come to find out there was some bug in the OTA update that would brick the tablet. You had to jump through a bunch of hoops to update it like factory reset. Once my niece heard erase she didn't want any part of that. Fast forward to now and she got a fitbit type device and the software isn't compatible with the current version of the OS. So my question is...Is that bug fixed so I can take the OTA update now or do I still have to jump through all those hoops to do it? If I do have to jump through the hoops then how do I do it? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I did update a few days ago and it was ok untill it was time of the 5.1.1 update - brick, so I downloaded nexus root toolkit to get it quickly done.
Make backup using gmail or just root using nexus tool, backup with titanium backup and update to 5.1.1 or custom without worry

Go to settings, about device, updates and install all the way up to 5.1.1, it might be a few updates. If the error shows then just use toolkit to recover nexus from soft brick and that's it

The stock 5.1.1 image makes the Nexus 7 really laggy, even when running the ParrotMod fix found in another thread.
My recommendation would be to run Pure Nexus ROM by GtrCraft (links are in the Download section for ROM and GApps, which you need for Google App Store and services). Of course, use the Nexus Toolkit or TWRP as the easiest ways to flash.
Then, flash the ParrotMod fix by parrotgeek1 to help speed it up.
Once all done, it should be as fast as it will get and you won't have any updates or OTA updates to install. Pure Nexus ROM has SuperSU in it, so it will be rooted. Some apps will not work when rooted, so keep that in mind (mainly banking and some streaming apps).

Well I would rather not have it rooted if I can help it. I don't want my niece getting into anything a messing it up. I have read that the marshmallow pure aosp is much smoother or was that what you were talking about? Can I flash that with the nexus tool? I want to keep everything buttoned up for her.
You can use tool to flash recovery TWRP, then boot recovery copy rom aosp or slim or whatever you like, flash it and you're good to go. It'll take up to 15min.
Just read rom description and follow install instruction

Sorry for my ignorance but if I use the aosp rom I would have to keep it rooted or no? When I updated to 5.1.1 I just unlocked the BL and then flashed 5.1.1 and then relocked it. Should I have installed a recovery? I didn't think I should since I didn't want to keep it rooted.

There really isn't anything to mess up when the tablet is rooted. It mainly just gives you access to more settings and more customization.
If you are dead-set on using a non-rooted ROM, you could also use CyanogenMod, which is updated regularly.

Beginner's Guide?

Hey guys, so I plan on getting this phone within the next month and I want to be prepared to unlock the bootloader and install magisk as soon as I get it. you need to know that there are 3 versions of the phone. A2017 (chinese), A2017G (intl) and A2017U (USA). I don't really know the exact differences, but keep in mind that the A2017U has probably the best support and has the most ROMs and kernels and stuff available. The A2017 comes, from what I've heard, with a recovery in Chinese. And the A2017G has development and stuff but you definitely want to avoid bricking it (DFU mode might need you to disassemble the phone). Besides from that the guides are well written, for example the one I used for my A2017G was okay (from Controllerboy). Everything's explained. If you find something that's not evident send the guide link here and ask.
I just got this phone today too. Man I don't see why anyone's even rooting this... It's working great for me. I spent a couple hours in settings, setting up Nova, and all that, and I'm really amazed by this phone. Stock Antutu and it's scoring 155k! Very fluid phone too. I got scared during delivery, because I started reading horror stories about this phone, and development it seems like there's always something broken or not working correctly. I really really don't see the need to mess with the software one bit! I would recommend sticking with stock just to see how you enjoy it, before taking any risks. I used to be a flashaholic, but after marshmallow, the need isn't really there anymore. Android has become so smooth, rooting has lost most of its novelty. At least that's my opinion.

There are a lot of reasons to root it. Maybe you are just used to the Cyanogenmod ROMs ans don't want to use any of the proprietary ROMs and Launchers. XPosed Framework, adblock, VPN, custom CA Certificates and Linux arm with VNC in the background are only some of hundreds of reasons to root your phone.

I've had this problem before. It's because I updated an "N" version of Windows without installing the latest media feature pack. If you have an "N" version of Windows, make sure to install the media feature pack.

I am aware of that issue but this is something else. Quick charge doesn't work at all and adb doesn't either. In fact a buddy of mine plugged his Axon into my computer and it worked just fine so..
I just got this phone today and it came with 6.0.1 MM B29. I am pretty impressed by the features that ZTE has added in to their stock UI. I hear that has gotten better with the N updates.
If I OTA update bone stock to N B25 and decide I miss root, I can go back and downgrade to N B19 via various methods and unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, root, and custom ROM etc?

What happens after I root and try to upgrade

Hello Everyone. I'm new to this forum, so please be kind. I have searched extensively for the answer to my question.
So, I spent a whole day upgrading and rooting my SM-G900V Galaxy S5. Lots of dead ends on this, but I got it! I did this because I needed more room on my internal memory. I was almost out, so I used Titanium Backup and uninstalled all the bloat apps.
My question is this. I am now at Lollipop V5.0 rooted. I would like to upgrade to Marshmallow 6.0.1. If I do this with a custom ROM:
1) Will all the bloat I just deleted all come back? Are these apps part of the custom ROM?
2) Will I lose the root? If the bloat stays off, I really don't care as that was my only reason for rooting in the first place.
I used XDA forums pretty extensively for information for getting as far as I have. Many, many thanks.

If your looking to upgrade to MM 6.0. You need to download the latest MM stock image and Odin back to full unrooted stock. Then re-root, install your custom recovery and flash what ever rom you want.. Yes if you flash back to stock MM in order to upgrade, then naturally all the bloat will come back.. But will not be there once you re-root and flash another rom.

1. Depends on the ROM. BTW, "free user space" does not depend on the ROM. Almost does not.
2. Yes. You will have to reroot it, if possible.
There is a good G900V section on the forum and you may like to read about CID, locked bootloader and MM rooting there.

Thank you for the reply, information, and link. I will go through it. I hadn't been able to find a MM rooting system that worked which is why I reverted to Lollipop. I actually had a lot of trouble even rooting 5.0 as nothing worked until I came upon the Blackcat scripts. That worked great.

You're welcome.
Look, LP and below does not require unlocked bootloader to be rooted. MM and abode does. That's why the possibility of rooting MM on your phone depends on it's hardware (CID).
Blackcat's scripts are great, but the modern method is to flash a "COMBINATION" ROM which can be rooted easily, to root it, to install SafeStrap Recovery and then to flash your favorite ROM (system partition) and firmware (bootloader, kernel, modem, recovery). The last action may contain bootloader unlocking process if the hardware is compatible.
