I unlocked the bootloader and rooted my 4.2 version nexus 4 with ToolKit, then got the 4.2.1 OTA update, and updated it thinking my root would be gone but I realized my phone updated smoothly and stayed rooted? Any ideas why? Just curious? Will my phone stay rooted every time? Or am I such a noob that I'm really not even rooted anymore? I mean I still have SuperSU and the tweaks I made while I was running 4.2 rooted?
hey there is an app called OTA root keeper, you can install it and your phone will be able to keep the root.
Btw you are getting the ota update even though you are rooted so its time for me to rooted my device as well. what tool kit you used to root the device and could you give me some info.
thanks

If you have cwm and you install any update that breaks root it will ask of you want to keep root when you choose to reboot the nexus 4.

I didn't install cwm, I stayed with stock recovery, I now realized I did loose my root but I still have the superSU app installed? what are some ways of deleting the app? Would I have to root the phone again then delete it that way? or other ways?

Yep, that was a pleasant surprise.
lost root too
got my nexus 4... 2 days ago, first day I left it stock, second day I decided to route it using the took kit, third day is today and I got the OTA from Google and decided to apply it..rebooted and lost root. I still have busy box installed and super SU...now what? Should i use the tool kit again?
Can anyone help please? Am I going to have 2 super SU apps and 2 busybox apps?
What should I do?
Same happened to me but i rooted using a different methods. I was advised to re root my n4 using the original method (just the rooting part, no need to unlocked as it's already locked) , it worked and I didn't end up with two super su or busy box.

Just reroot with the toolkit, you'll be fine. And you don't have to delete the super su app. You will only have one su app after you reroot .

Hi all - I just received a notice on my Nexus 7 that there is a system update to install. I already installed 4.3 build JWR66V a couple weeks ago. Anyone know what this update is? I can't seem to find any information anywhere. My device is unlocked and rooted, running stock.
Yeah, google has released a newer version, so if you're on stock, why not update?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
It's an update from build JWR66V to JWR66Y, still Android 4.3.
If it's an OTA update, always install it.
It fixes a couple of issues after the 4.3 update
Sent from my Nexus 7(2012) that has zero issues.
Is it possible to update via ota when the device is unlocked and rooted? I updated it but it still says JWR66V, not Y. But when I look for an update it says up to date.

Yes you'll still recieve the update it just hasnt been pushed to you yet if it says up to date. Factory images for it are already up waiting on someone to make a zip for CWM

Apparently not. I updated but I still have root

Me too, but gives error when installing =(
Rooter and bootloader unlock
Had an error at then end of the installation but looks like it succeed to update it coz when i started my device it said that my applications are optimizating for the new version or something like that.
Build is JWR66V now, there is no any system updates now. Root is still there.

Guess nobody believed me :silly:
Anybody working on a zip yet for the update??
If you lost root and it put you back on stock recovery just reflash your recovery then supersu
For the folks that are having "error" during the update, restart your n7 then clear cache and data from framework services and check for updates again and it should come up. Also make sure you at least have 80% battery level:good:
It's supposed to fix the phantom screen touch problem and a few other things I'm sure someone will come up with root G.B.Y.
Sent from my Nexus 7
There's an OTA .zip for build JWR66Y here... but there appears to be a problem with symlink permisssions.
But there is also a solution here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1745781&page=53 and a modified version of the OTA that fixes the permissions. Worked for me flashing via TRWP.
Incidentally, I also lost root after upgrading... not sure why... but not a big problem, as I reflashed SuperSU v1.51 in TWRP.
-----------------------------
Not quite sure what this very minor upgrade is supposed to accomplish, given 4.3 was only rolled out 4 weeks or so, ago.... but I suspect it has a lot to do with a minor screwup on Googles part, the details of which can be found here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2382880.
I think (and I could be wrong), build JWR66Y is {AOSP JSS15J + Gapps}... in other words, JSS15J, released as Factory Stock instead of AOSP.
And the full factory image of JWR66Y is already available on the Google Developer website here and it's immediate predecessor, JWR66V has been 'pulled' and is no longer available for download.
Anyway, take a look at the above link, and you should see what I'm getting at.
Rgrds,
Ged.
grouper zip that was linked worked great here. No issues here now
Hi all,
I've been searching this forum (and the rest of the internet) for this question but there are not really similar answers.
I would like to root my nexus 4 just to be able to change the host file in the system folder. The rest if the phone I would like to remain stock (for now). But since android 4.4 is coming up I was wondering if it is still possible to receive the OTA update after performing this action.
Anyone knows an answer to this question?

edit: I am checking on something for you... you will receive OTA updates but checking to see if host file is one of the files it checks before it upgrades.
More than likely any changes to your system folder will cause it too fail
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417810
In my experience you still receive OTA updates, but you lose root while updating. I'm not sure if the hosts file is changed though.
If you're rooted and you've stock recovery then you'll be able to Upgrade but if you've rooted n installed 3rd party recovery then you'll receive update but it won't install. It will fail.

Are you sure about that? I've been running cwm recovery ever since 4.2.0. Every ota update was received and installed without issues, but I always simply lost root until a new method for the new android release appeared.
You can still receive OTA but I would suggest not accepting it and flash it manually using a "safe" method. The OTA update from 4.2 to 4.3 caused problems on rooted phones. Usually it is fine but 4.3 changed the file system which caused the problem, so better be safe than sorry.

Thank you all for your replies, this tells me again that it is quite difficult to say what happens. Since KitKat is probably coming to the Nexus 4 one of these days I will stay stock for now and decide later if I want to root my phone.
I used superSU Pro, and turned on "survival mode" when I did the OTA update to 4.3, and didn't have any problems losing root. Sometimes I'll get a message say I may have lost root access, but I've never had any problems with apps that require root.

on the last update.. I wasn't getting the OTA until I unrooted. I think you have to unlock the bootloader too.. then I immediately received the OTA. I didn't have stock recovery. I was glad that I didn't have to wipe everything.. I then re-rooted.. was good to go.
Hello fellow N10 owners,
Unfortunately, the OTA KitKat update for my N10 is still not available for download.
I have reset the Google Frameworks app, but that did not work.
I am running Android Version 4.3 build JWR66Y stock rooted.
If you guys have any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Also, If you would know
how I could keep root after the update that would be awesome!
Thank you

Perhaps Google is waiting for Kitkat to be released on the new Nexus 10 before updatring the original Nexus 10.
There is no new Google 10 and seriously once you get KitKat on your tablet you'll wish you hadn't, the OS is like a giant phone and isn't geared up for tablets.

I disagree. With the exception of the PhoneUI settings screen it's exactly the same thing we had before with much improved performance and reliability. I'm so glad to get rid of 4.3.. Nothing but problems.
Maybe it's been pulled.

The full image is available on the Nexus factory images site. If you can't wait for the OTA, just download and flash that. Just remember to edit the batch file so you don't wipe everything. Here is the link.
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?csw=1#mantarayjwr66y
Taking advantage of the topic, I'm from Brazil and me has not yet come to update my tablet version is also JWR66Y rooted, I need to get the root to update via OTA? Because I remember the last update to 4.3, when restarted I had problem with the boot image and had to use a tool to change the boot image
I waited, and waited, but gave up a couple nights ago. Seems to me, it should be like a voting system. The more manual update checks you do, the sooner you get it versus those that don't manually check. Those that don't realize the update is even or won't miss it for another few days.
Editing the -w out of the batch file was troublesome for me. The flag would complete and the tablet would reboot, but it would then hang on the nexus boot screen. Tried twice, but waiting a half an hour each time, I deemed it failure. Unexpected too since I had done a full wipe, factory fresh 4.3 the week prior.
Running the unedited batch with wipe went without a hitch. No biggie since I had done it recently.

Yeah, I updated mine with the factory image several days ago...I decided to go ahead and let it do the full wipe since I was reading that folks were having issues after removing the "-w" flag. Full wipe is probably the way to go anyway if want to avoid bugs.
For anyone interested who hasn't done this before, I found the instructions here to be quite helpful:

Worked thanks bud
Not sure how many other people are getting this update. But I just got Android 4.4 KitKat on my Moto X.
Its downloading right now and should be installed in the next few minutes.
Odd Note:
I got another (very small) update before the kitkat update came.
This small update failed, so when I went to go retry it instead of saying the the other update it said that KitKat 4.4 was ready to download. :victory:
