Hi,
Is it possible to customise the navigation bar (get PIE controls, reduce the size) without changing ROM ?
Thanks.
why'd you wanna do that. you would need to take inferior stuff and dork around with hacks and exploits. if you go that route dont pride yourself running stock afterwards, it'll be a patchy mess, far away from a polished experience.
to some extend i can appreciate whats possible with hacks - but i wouldnt be able to cope with the patchyness of it.
but yeah, the pie thing is lmt. and the navbar thing is a mod you find on xda - you get to choose fixed sizes that you can flash. both is stone age compared to what you could do with integrated solutions.

I'm on stock rom, but rooted. I use HideBar: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=be.ppareit.hidebar . Works well on the phones with a navigation bar, but was originally written for tablets. The developer has recently received a Nexus 4, so we can expect some love for our phones.
Thanks for your replies, I guess I will have to install PA, I didn't want to install a custom ROM because flashing Gaaos with recovery after each PA update is very anoying (is it the same with CM ?), and also Stock version et the updates first !
How long it takes for PA and CM to add the stock updates to their ROMs please ?

The update from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2 was about a days wait at most for PA.

It's strange because with my Motorola Defy, when I installed a new update of CM10, I never had to reinstall Gaaps, only the first time...
Reinstalling Gaaps after each updates of PA or CM is only because of the Nexus 4 ?
I think you get something wrong there. "Reinstalling" means literally one more tap in twrp or cwm. You dont have to set them up again, you just do that tap and its done. It has gapp backup, so not even that tap is needed, but not sure if its unlocked already.

**** I don't understand I'm french :/ ... thanks you anyway, I'll keep the stock rom + LMT launcher do get the official android updates first
I have broken my htc one I got from my brother so I am back to using the sgs4 I have, never planed to use the htc one for so long it just happens that way because of the speakers I used it to play music at work anyways I am going to use the sgs4 and root/rom it
I have rooted/romed in the past with my sgs1 using cm9 and used odin so I understand most thigns
not sure what info is useless here since I have been out of this for a while now, I actually posted about this same topic a while ago but then I got a htc one and with my ADD I forgot about this
Code:
Android 4.3
Software L720VPUEMK2
Hardware: L720.08
Baseband L720VPUEMK2
Kernel 3.4.0-1927016 [email protected]#1 Sat Nov 16 11:05:09 KST 2013
Build JSS15J.L720VPUEMK2
SELinux Status: Enforcing SEPF_SPH-L720_4.3_0012
I assume I have to root first and then go from there - or can I just odin and have everything I need? I hate using odin so I want to use that as little as I can
do I have to odin since I have everything updated stock?
basically I am asking what do I have to do now, I have been reading for a few hours now and I have been out of this scene for a while now and its hard to get the answers by reading everything since there is lots of stuff not related to what I want and people have been doing this for a while and the phone has been out for a while now so its hard not being in this from the beginning
thanks for your help

Safe Root works great for our phone. Here is the link: http://www.droidviews.com/root-verizon-galaxy-s4-sch-i545-on-android-4-3-vruemk2/ . I know, it takes you off of xda, but you can root your phone with out using odin. It is quick and easy. You can then install a twrp through goo manager. No need to use odin for that. Good luck.
I used CF Auto root. Its awesome.
Then I used ROM manager from the market to flash in CWM.
In my reading I saw most.the recoveries being used were Philz and TWRP.
So after I let ROM manager flash CWM I DL.the latest Philz zip and flashed it from recovery.
Made many a nandroid and jump from TW to AOSP every day. *****The one thing you need to know is....have SE Linux checked under misc nandroid settings****otherwise it's no fun.
If you say "Please" be sure to "Hit Thanks!!!"

so I have used cf auto root and installed cwm the rommanager that worked pretty well
I will assume that installing roms is the same as before after this
I am glad to see that things have been simplified here I will post back if I have problems again
I am wondering what is the best rom for me, I dont really care much if I have the touchwiz I used midnightrom and CM9 on my sgs1 epic before and loved it the lack of touchwiz wasnt a problem for me - I dont like any of the samsung apps at all and never want to use the sprint apps, I would not like it if the widgets go away I use those for my btc prices and my mining rig hashrate
I could use a stock rom for this phone if all the crappy sprint apps have been removed
like I said I have been out of this game for a while and at the time CM9 was just about the best rom out so I used that, all the others were good just didnt have as many features

Everyone has their own preferences, so you just need to look at what's available. The great thing about Android is that there are so many options, but that creates a fair amount of work too. With root you can delete whatever app you want, so bloatware isn't much of an issue. To see what apps are safe to remove, most ROM developers post what they remove. You can also freeze the apps using things like Titanium Backup, so that you can easily restore them if you decide you want something back.

yea I know there are lots of roms, what are some of the most stable roms out - I can see that the cyanogenmod is only nightly builds nothing stable is that a problem, I havent seen CM in this forums on the first few pages so is it not one of the better ones anymore?
what are a few of the most stable roms that have most of the features that would be needed - nothing that has strange glitches like in the past there were problems with GPS working and a few other things

I am going to skirt the "best rom" issue and just drop a list of what has been good for me... If you try all of these you'll certainly find one that works for you. I have intentionally mixed up the order here to avoid hurting anyone's feelings.. LOL

you are absolutely right I dont know why I even asked that "best rom" it was stupid I admit it I feel stupid about that one I dont want to say I mistyped but I wasnt thinking I totally understand the reason why its a bad question to ask and why there isnt a real answer so I am sorry and I do know its one of those things you dont ask I have read that in the past but I forgot or something
what I ment to say was mainly what roms are the most complete in the sense that they have all the things working that should be like gps/wifi/4g/lte things like that, in the past a few roms were missing things like that
are there any that certain apps wont work for? I use and rely on "no led" app I just love the way it shows the colored icons on screen

The big split in ROMs is between touchwiz and AOSP. Touchwiz is Samsung's layer on top of the core Android Google produces. Some features like multi-window, the standard Samsung keyboard, air gesture, etc. rely on touchwiz to work. I'm sure you can find a complete list of what relies on touchwiz to see if any of it is important to you. I think most ROMs will have all radios working, but like others have said, just make sure to have backups of your current setup to go back to and experiment, and since you already have the MK2 modem, make sure whatever ROM you choose is compatible with MK2. It doesn't take all that long to flash different ROMs and see what you think.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but custom ROMs just take existing modules and combine them to save you work. But, you can start with the stock rooted ROM and build your own experience from there too. Check out the hotspot mod, custom kernels, Xposed modules, various themes, and build something that works for you.

so yea I dont really like the touchwiz interface I liked using the stock android theme my last phone had using CM9 so touchwiz isnt really needed
I do need to be able to use widgets though like the ones for apps that show me the prices of gold/silver my bitcoins/litecoins and the mining speed from my miners using the api I have - dont some of the widgets need touchwiz to work, not the touchwiz widgets but the ones that apps create
I have installed roms before so I know its not hard but once you get into this things can get out of control and after a while you find your self having to use odin and then things get scary cuz lets face it who really likes using odin unless something has changed from last year odin is just about the only thing that could really brick your phone if something goes wrong
thanks for your help I will give it a go and hope nothing bad happens

In my experience, there are Samsung widgets that not only require touchwiz, but also require Samsung's launcher. I use several widgets designed for multiple Android devices, and I don't think they care about touchwiz.

Yes, you had stressed earlier that you wanted all things working. If you want any of the S features to work on your phone than you need to keep touchwiz as your base rom. Installing a different launcher can give you that. If you like the look of AOSP, there is a new google now launcher that can provide more of an AOSP look. You can remove a lot of the bloat and sprint stuff fairly easily with TiBu or a root file explorer. Just be cautious, removing some of the Sprint stuff will screw up your phone and cause the ability to update PRL or Profile to fail.

yea wanted all things working but I guess after looking at it I dont use much of the "S" features if at all so I will just have to try some out and see whats up
one thing I was wondering about is the "gapps" in the past I had to make sure it was the exact right one for the exact rom I was using but now I dont see much about saying a specific version of gapps for the roms rather just to install gapps and get the latest one - so the gapps that would be for the sprint phone should work for the roms?
I do however like the feature where you wave your hand over the screen when its off and it lights up to show you the time and info, it would suck if that went away but I can deal with it
I would like to know if there are any problems with using the samsung tec tiles, those NFC sticker tags with other roms that wouldnt have any touchwiz stuff
I assume that they are just NFC so they should work but I want to be sure
I havent installed a rom yet been busy - but I did get root
I noticed I have an OTA update waiting, I assume its 4.4 so if I update will I have problems rooting or remove root and make installing roms hard?
I am proud to present my first custom rom!
GWiz (Used to be Superskilled) is a ROM that has minor tweaks here and there and some debloating. This is meant to be an basic rom for users to enjoy. The reason its called Gwiz is that because I will be making tons of themes for this in which you may say Gee wiz! No? Okay. Dont expect updates as this is an basic rom really.
Features
-Knox Removed-ish (LP)
-Lightly- Debloated
-Many more
-Very basic as you can see..
Installation
1. Have TWRP or CWM recovery installed (Use T805 recoveries)
2. Download the ROM
3.Backup your stuff in TWRP or CWM
4. Wipe dalvik, data, and caches (AKA Factory reset)
5.Install the ROM
6. Reboot and wait
7. Done?

So I am big into trying every rom possible and I came to the conclusion for the droid turbo itself....the best rom is by Mokee. They seem to give the most support for the turbo. I have not noticed any bugs for their release roms. Although RR is by far the most customizable and have the most features....it annoys me at times with the bugs I notice. I highly recommend anyone with a turbo to use Mokee.

1) Make sure you can unlock your bootloader. Do NOT update to SUTL-49, if your bootloader is still locked. Sunshine bootloader unlock for the XT1254 only works on SUTL-44.
2) Mokee Marshmallow ROM for Quarks is over in the OTHER Quark forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-maxx
All the custom ROM, kernel development is over there. CM dev replicated the CM threads over here after being physically removed last September, but all the other dev work stayed over there. Sunshine unlock exploit for the Droid Turbo XT1254 was published in November 2015, about two months after the forums were split into "active" Quarks with unlocked bootloader and the dead dev Quark (Droid Turbo XT1254, with locked bootloader). So, then after bootloader unlock became available, then Droid Turbo owners had to go to the to other forum for custom ROMs, kernels, recovery (TWRP), etc.

yep, that thread "MoKee Open Source - Building And Submitting Patches (English version of v1.3 " was exactly what i was looking for, thanks dude.
I've been running mokee for a week or so and agree that it's an awesome ROM.
Prior to it I was using compufreek (The first real rooted flash I've done on this phone) and then RR.
Same experience with Remix as you had.
The stock based computerfreek was great but I want more customization.
My only frustrations with Mokee is I REALLY want active display back. It seemed to have some similar setting in the ROM but it didn't work well. Running ACdisplay app for now which shows notifications when they come in and when you pull the phone out of pocket, but wave to wake is glitchy...seems to need ALL sensors touched for one second to show time/notific.
For me, modified stock is the only way to go. I need solid Bluetooth (RR/CM13 based glitch in my Chrysler), VoLTE, and public wifi hotspot connectivity (had issues with ComputerFreek's ROM). Wtih Xposed modules, Stock is the best. For me. And I've tried EVERY ROM available.

I agree xposed is a big game changer, I remember being able to almost make my own version of a rom with my old phone.
What modules are you using to tweak your stock rooted?
Is there a theme mod that will allow you to use cm themes or something similar? That's my favorite cm option these days. Lol.

Which Xposed modules do you run? Just curious. It's been well over a year since I messed with Xposed -- back when I was running stock 5.0.2 before I went to CM -- so not sure what's even out there currently.

Here's why I started using xposed with modules in the first place and why I stopped...
On my 2013 LG Nexus 5 phones (mine and my wife's), I was eventually forced to run xposed/Gravity Box plus some other modules, because my long-time favorite ROM I had been using since 2011 gen3 Galaxy Nexus went off the rails. During the time I used my LG Nexus 5, the ROM team -- which covered several devices -- got some new militant members who started locking out settings choices.
Android is about choice. I understand it was their ROM, and they can do what they wanted -- but their ROM design philosophy drastically changed from when I first started using the ROM. Previously they had default choices (DPI, etc) for each device, but also supplied tools or alternate menu choices to change those if you wanted something different. They suddenly decided all those settings would be only their way. Some apps do not work well with miniscule DPI; it was documented -- they didn't care. They loathed stock DPI, no matter the device -- they insisted it be 70% of stock, no matter what stock was. While I could use Build Prop Editor to change DPI, they also disabled AOSP Recents for their own inferior version of Recents they had designed. At first they gave a choice of their own Recents or AOSP Recents, but then in the next stage of militancy they disabled AOSP Recents, so you HAD to use their version. And you couldn't "Clear All" with one touch.
People then started installing Gravity Box to enable AOSP recents (the code was still there). The ROM team then stripped out the code so you couldn't use Gravity Box to enable AOSP "recents", and especially "Clear All Recents" with one touch. (That was my first taste of Xposed, to give me back customization choices that ROM team had taken away.) Well, you could do that at first -- use Gravity Box to enable AOSP Recents -- but when they discovered people were doing that and telling others in the ROM threads how to do it, they even stripped out the AOSP Recents code! So, it was going to be their way or no way. I don't understand why they turned on their users like that. It was a great, fast ROM and until then you could customize it how you wanted.
I wasn't the only one who felt they went awry. Many "unofficial" versions of the that ROM started popping up, which restored the choices they had removed -- but not in time for me. I ditched the ROM and went to stock Google AOSP + xposed/Gravity Box with a few other modules to create what I wanted.
Then, after owning two different generations of Nexus phones (4.65", and 4.95"), in late 2014 Google screwed up and released the 6" Nexus 6 instead of something more reasonable (like the 5.2" variant they were testing as late as mid-August 2014). So, I bought two 64GB Moto XT1225 (for about $700 each) which was basically the 5.2" version of the Moto Nexus 6 Google wouldn't release. No custom ROMs were available yet for the XT1225, so I just kept rooted Moto stock with xposed/Gravity Box + other modules.
I used it with KitKat 4.4.4 on my XT1225 and I even used it with Lollipop 5.0.2 on my XT1225. I was very glad they were able to adapt Xposed to work with ART instead of just Dalvik.
But Gravity Box module in particular has a warning NOT to use it with heavily customized ROMs or there will be conflicts. And CM is a heavily customized ROM. When I switched to CM, I stopped using Gravity Box. Also CM was customized enough I didn't need the other xposed modules (for audio levels, Qi charging sounds, etc.) There was only one function not replicated on CM, and I decided I could live without it. IF something is messing up on my phone, I wanted to be able to tell if it was a bug in CM without having to worry I was the one messing up the phone by having xposed/modules conflicting...
I've been using CM for over a year now, so I'm not coversant with the current state of xposed. I was surprised you still have to flash the "alpha" files first before flashing Xposed installer. Seems by now, it would be well out of alpha -- been almost 1.5 years! -- and that the devs perhaps would have made it be an easier 1-step process.
I tried every rom posible and all have the biggest bug ever ...at least for me it is but nobody is talking about ...there is something i don't know ? there is no need to be mean to my question but why all roms have this problem with keeping the playstore apps updated ...why the apps revert to previous versions and why this is hapening only to custom roms ?.. if then i ask you what is the use of custom roms? ...
these days even a five years child can root install a custom cwm , a custom kernel a viper4 sound mod and debloat a original stock rom
Lol.
I haven't experience anything like that, in any Roms i have flashed.
Throw your s4 and buy some updated android device.

What kind of gapps are you running? I've been using opengapps for every custom ROM I've used and had no issue what so ever.

a custom rom is exactly what it says it is, a customised version of the original android operating system that somebody has, in their own precious time, played around with to try & give us something a little different for this ageing device. Chances are that if you went out tomorrow & bought an S7 edge & fired it up you would have to update some gapps, whichever you may use. I think you need to take a deep breath & have a little more appreciation & understanding for the things that go on here. If a 5 yr old is able to do what you claim then maybe you should turn your hand to contributing to the community................... but thats just my opinion......no offence intended
Is this guy for real? Apps simply don't revert to previous version after you update them. There's a simple setting in the playstore that allows auto update of your installed apps to the latest version when they become available. And is this how you lose from custom Roms? Lololololol I thought your device blew up or melted.
Buy an IPhone and explain us how cool is it. You'll enjoy it, for sure
Pls close delete this thread its useless.

The problem isn't the phone, it's the user.

Believe it or not, but I have seen similar behavior with some of my apps.
I update it dl today and tomorrow I have to update again, but there doesn't seem to be any changes in the changelog.
But this happens rarely.
So I believe the OP exaggerates. This also started happening only recently, so it's either something related to the new Android updates - which means older ROMs (5.1 and below) should be safe - or something related to gapps.
To everyone who asked for this thread to be closed and/or brought up the fact it's in the wrong place, why did you not click on the little triangle at the bottom left of the post and report it? Mods can't do anything about it if they don't know there is an issue.
As to the OP, I actually tried keeping an Android 2.3.3 ROM's Google apps up to date - one of the features of the ROM I offered. To do that I didn't include anything but the Play Store. Today, such a task would be difficult. If you like, you can download a GApps package from OpenGApps on a daily basis and flash it yourself.
