I tried out Marshmallow but didn't like it so used a nandroid backup to completely restore the phone.
After a few errors trying to restore (think it was a 255 error?) in recovery it finally worked however now I have no service, and the IMEI just says 0.
Can this be fixed or have I now got a small tablet?
Note: I am not trying to change my IMEI which I know is illegal, just trying to get back my one.
restore a 6.0 twrp backup..changing IMEI in a snapdragon device is a pain in the ass. MTK devices are easy.

I don't have any TWRP backups from marshmallow, just one from lollipop. I read that QPST is the tool that sorts this however Windows cannot find the correct drivers (despite having Motorola Device Manager installed) for my device so I cannot input a port into the software to find the phone.
I read somewhere that flashing stock firmware solves the problem, you should try that

Flashed the file you said but still IMEI is 0.
What now?
If no one else has any other software ideas then two things come to mind:
1. If you have the box that the Moto X Play came in then the IMEI is on the outside of the box. The information on how to restore it is on the Internet. Just google it. Not going to discuss it due to legality issues.
2. Return the phone to warranty depot for repairs if possible. Not sure on your circumstances.

i think i have messed up big this tym . my phone is bricked .
there is no recovery and the download mode even though its there its not installing anything.
the device is not appearing as qhsusb_bulk in linux so i cant access partion it just shows lge composite device.
it just boots up i get a black screen and the notification led starts to blink all colors.
i think the only way is if somehow i can force to install through the unresponsive download mode which was working before i rooted the phone with ioroot. or somehow access the phones partitions via linux even though it shows lge composite device

Good to know a bit more info on the case. So the computer is not recognizing the phone as an adb device at all?.. (I've never used Linux OS when modding my phone so my knowledge in that department is limited and I hope someone else will be able to help you there.) .. Else I would see if a windows computer would recognize the phone as an adb device.

Sorry for not being able to help you... but i suggest you to keep all your problems in 1 thread instead of createting several threads for your issue. It gets confusing to follow all your threads and most likely harder to help you as you haven't gathered all information and status on your proceedings in one and same place.
I'm crossing my fingers hoping that someone will be able to help you or that you'll find a solution. As for your screen being cracked makes it hard to operate. Do you have a bluetooth mouse? or an otg cable where you can connect a mouse? that way you'll be able to access the whole screen.

just an idea but not sure if it will work. can you use some voice control app to make it dial the numbers you want.. like google now? "Call...".. if you understand what i mean... It's hard, unless you install a rom that allows you to rotate the screen uppside down which is also an option. I remember i cracked my nexus 4 screen. I had it running slimkat rom and could rotate the screen uppside down. But not sure you'll be able to access the hidden menu on custom rom though(?).. Do you have any efs backup anywhere?

reverting to complete stock has in many cases helped retrive imei but there is not guarantee. what you could try is to make a backup of your current rom, so that you have the old and a new back up and then restore the old and see if it worked. if not go back to the new. I guess the best would be to try to go back to complete stock.

Ah ok. Had you used ioroot, it would have takes a backup of your efs partition. Well we do not promote people to use each other's efs backups as it's illegal.
Ok I have been an xda member for almost 8 years and this is my first thread , I have always found through search the answer to my problems with phones, but I cant for the life of me come up with anything on this. After ota upgrade to oxygenos 2.1.2 I lost lte (att/cricket) at first I thought it was imei related on att side, nope, then I tried reflashing modem manually through fastboot and somewhere in the procees went back and I had to reflash using hard bick method, after that I lost both imei and no signal , after a bunch of tinkering ive managed to get sim1 imei back but no signal!???? any ideas?
Same issue i got. Have sent a note to Support @ OnePlus. I have a Team Viewer session on coming sunday. Will let you know how it goes
hopefully it is software "fixable" and you we dont have to send it in to a repair center
Try to reflash full rom with firmware via fastboot.

I was VERY stupid. I went back to stock Oxygen OS using a fastboot image and now if I dial #*06# the IMEI box shows up but no IMEI number is actually in the box it is just blank. I did post about this before but last time I didn't really know what happened I was asking if anyone could tell me what they thought happened. I am pretty sure I screwed up the EFS partition and I am just wondering what I need to do now. Is there some way I can repair it I mean I don't have a backup. Can I contact OnePlus support? I really need help.

This happened to me a few times in the past, all I had to do was wipe dalvik and cache again and it came back. Not sure if it's the same issue but I would give it a shot. Just boot into recovery and wipe them again and see if it gets you back up and running.

I cannot use that because my device is not hard bricked and it will not install the driver since I can enter the bootloader normally.
Not sure if you've seen this post its based on the post above but I think it just uses fastboot. Don't know if it will work for you, but figured it would be worth a shot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62973446&postcount=2
I tried using the tool and it did not work, I purposely hard bricked the device to try it and still no signal or imei. Another problem is WiFi takes about 4 minutes just to turn on but I can live with that I just want service.
Basically flashing back the stock should bring back the efs. Let's see if someone has a solution. Sorry!
EFS files are unique to each phone. If the EFS is corrupt or damaged, and there is no backup, I don't know of any way to fix it ;_; You can try OnePlus support but they aren't as dumb as carrier warranty or other phone manufacturers. They'll be more likely to know what you did.
It is possible to restore your imei number, I did it on my brothers lg g2. It requires some software for PC (I can't remember the name, you'll have to google it) and the box your phone came in with the imei number. It is possible, so don't lose hope!

Same problem also with my op2 . No imei no baseband
Hello everybody,
What can I do if my Axon 7 has lost the IMEI by restoring a backup through TWRP? My baseband version is unrecognized.
I have tried to save on this thread the mobile phone, but the problem "IMEI Changer" does not recognize DIAG port.
Windows only shows:
Sry for my bad english. I use Google Translate.
I hate to say this, but you're out of luck. If you restored your EFS partition via a bad version of TWRP, you're stuck. Send it back to ZTE.

I encountered the exact issue you told me. I restored a TWRP backup that I had made through a faulty TWRP version and it made me lose my IMEI and baseband. Tried just about anything. Nothing worked.
Restored everything to stock, reflashed stock recovery and locked bootloader and sent it back. Got a new one, only had to pay the shipping costs of my device to Germany. I hope you're as lucky as I have been. Thumbs up.

Folks need to stop messing with the EFS partition. The only things you should be backing up with twrp is boot, system, and data. Nothing else.
Have you tried the zadig tool?
http://zadig.akeo.ie
Also, I've found this Qualcomm Driver to always work for me in the past. Surprising. It's the ONLY one that could help my device get detected by certain tools.
I uploaded it to my AFH for safekeeping: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=817550096634746189
If you haven't tried any of this yet, just give it a whirl. I used the IMEI tool to rewrite my IMEI when I accidentally wiped it, and it was perfect.
My imei is shown as unknow i have a US phone but its working fine so i dont really pay much atention to it lol, but i will try the app kwesi posted to see if i can get it working

Hey,
When the IMEI is corrupted on the software side, it still shows up using:
fastboot getvar all
So the IMEI is somehow corrupted on the EFS partition. How, I don't know. Seems like the EFS acts like a bridge between hardware/software. Of course, I could be wrong...
Some have tried but didn't succeed. Now, it's not the first time I see someone using another EFS backup and getting his IMEI back. I don't know why it would get "their"" original IMEI instead of the one included in the EFS backup either. But i guess they must all lie saying it fixed their device.
Cheers...
I have restored EFS using a backup from someone else's device EFS. It did not change my original imei.

Down do it. The efs is device dependent. It will contain things like your imei. So even if restored on another device it will end up causing issues due to the same imei on different devices. It can also make it so things like WiFi don't work

Guys can anyone share efs so that I can restore and save my phone..I Have no signal ispitevof detection sim card...it shows no service.. But when I use jio it shows full signal..kindly help..
I had similar problem with my OnePlus X. Apparently I was saving and restoring my efs partion with every twrp backup which eventually caused it to become currupt. Thought my phone was toast until a friend on telegram suggested deleting modem1 and modem2 files with adb commands. Sounded more destructive then good but it actually worked sim was reading again and got full use of my phone. It's good to make backup of efs but only once. Not sure if this is the fix for every phone but works with OnePlus and Xiaomi.
How to Fix EFS from Bootloader Mode using Fastboot commands
Setup ADB and Fastboot on your PC.
Enable Developer options & USB debugging on your Android device.
Connect your device to the PC and open a command window on the PC.
Issue the following commands one by one:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot reboot
Got my information from here
