S7 home button plastic? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I have played with my S7 edge roughly 2 days, got it all protected and covered up except the home button. I also have yet to drop the phone or anything. However I realise there are some micro bumps on the home button which I think possibly appearing due to slotting it into the Gear VR. Also there are some tiny tiny air bubbles on the edges of the surface of the home button which is annoying me a little. It seems as though the fingerprint sensor is a plastic film glued on top of the home button.
I also notice that the home button is not seem to be covered with glass and is just purely having a exposed plastic surface which I think would develop scratches after some time.
Thoughts?

Scratches or not fingerprints still work. Happened on my note 5 before

Im just concerned over the quality of material used for the home button for it is possibly the most used button and lends itself easily to wear... yet plastic is used?

Same here! very careful with it and after only a day with it can see a little spot on that button... looks very poor quality!!! Just shiny but plastic... at that price, comme on Samsung!

They have done this with every iteration of the Galaxy. I have had quite a few of them and never had a home button that degraded. And I'm pretty OCD with my tech. That being said, you have a valid point. $800 phone, they should have sapphire home button and camera lense. No excuse.

Can't believe we're complaining about plastic. We're talking about plastic.
Sent from my SM-G935W8 using Tapatalk

for that price we should demand ceramic or aluminium! plastic is cheap.

Aluminium is not durable, plastic doing better job for it although ugly with micro scratch after prolong usage. My samsung s4 home button still fine till now, need to take proper care though.

Yea the home button and camera lens would be nice to have gorilla glass/sapphire glass on.
But at least we get glass on camera lens cover unlike the Sony Z5 that got plastic.......

Well, as far as I know the camera lens has gorilla glass. Same resistance class as the display.

Good to know, though it was plain glass or at best harden glass.

oh well theres nth we can do about the plastic home button but to live with it =(

Here you go guys!

Using strong lenses I use at work, the camera glass has no scratches after 6 weeks of use. The glass with the LED and the HR sensor has loads of microscopic scratches suggesting that the glass used in front of the camera is reinforced / gorilla glass.

The home button is my biggest complaint about this phone. I treat this device like a baby, and yet I have a very noticeable scratch on this damn button. The back glass is also of poor quality, Samsung claims it's gorilla glass but it's definitely not the same type used on the screen. If you compare scratch tests with the s6 on YouTube you will see that the s6 is much more resistant.
The build quality on the S7 is garbage. It's not necessarily bad, but for almost 1000€ that I payed at launch, it's garbage.

I immediately looked for this thread after seeing some micro-peeling on my gold SGS7E. Its visible when you look at it in bright light.

Mine has been holding up fine so far, but I take good care of my phones. The HRM/LED flash is covered with plastic not glass, and yes the home button is also plastic.

Gorilla glass and Gorilla glass

A major plus with the SGSII is the Gorilla Glass on the display, but the million dollar question is what it has on the camera lens?
I love not having to worry about the screen on my Nokia N8 (also Gorilla glass), but am always wary about the camera lens which is "scratch resistent mineral glass" although it's generally recessed in its housing enough not to be a real issue.
Looking at the SGSII videos and pictures, however, it looks as though it will rest solidly - and directly - on the lens cover of the camera in the back (and of couse that's not part of an easily replacable component like the battery hatch).
So - are we going to be able to put our phones down face up without worry?
You shouldn't worry, scratches on lenses isn't really a problem. The reason is a because of how optics in lenses/cameras work. The surface on the lense is so far from focus that a scratch on the lens isn't projected on the lens as a scratch. Of course, a big damage will cause visible effects though.
I'd really like to add some links with info, but I'm not allowed, really a pity that new users cannot prove their information.
But try to google:
kurtmunger dirty lens
and
tech arp lens elements for scratches
for some info
Isn't the SGS and ALL iPhones supposed to have 'Gorrilla Glass'? iPhone's shatter like no-one's business; is it a lie? Like the cake?

Depends how you abuse a phone. iPhones shatter because they are small and slick and have hard metal around the edge that directly transfers impact force to everything else because it is the frame of the phone (plastic or metal that is attached to frame would dampen the impact somewhat) Also I think it is the back of the iPhone that shatters, and that glass is not as good as the screen glass.
tjtj4444: great first post. I agree 100%, small scratches are not visible to the image sensor when focused on something far away. A finger smudge is worse. So I hope those lenses are oleophobic
The camera cover on the Samsung Galaxy S2 is suppose to be depressed behind the phone. I don't think it will be vulnerable to scratches and severe damage. However, as in the case of all tech-gadgets, over the years of ownership, there should be visible signs of wear and tear. If these signs of wear of don't appear over time, then I have to say, you must be a very careful owner, lol.
I'm none too worried about an odd scratch, but more of multiple scratches. I remember being crushed when my Samsung i900 arrived with two scratches on the lens, but they never affected the photos.
On my Desire, however, I got so many scratches that they caught enough light to have the same effect as grease on the lens. Fortunately with the Desire, I replaced the battery cover multiple times and eventually just popped the lens cover out of one.
So, no, an occasional scratch won't ruin it forever, but multiple, repeated scratches will.
Gorilla glass isn't even that good honestly. It seems to be great for demonstrations where people actively try to damage it with keys and stuff but when you use it in the real world, stuff like sand and fine debris can easily mess the screen up.
On the forums here, someone stated that their LG Optimus 2X screen shattered and he is looking for a replacement, he eventually found the necessary parts, but my thought is that if it can shatter with just a drop, whats to say that this is a one time occurrence? Although there is no doubt its stronger than mineral glass and Apple's Glass.

Im not so sure about that; I had my Captivate for about 7 months and nnever used a screen protecter.
I dropped the phone multiple times from various heights along with bumps, bangs, and stuffing in pockets.
Not a single scratch; the phone looked like hell too, However if you cover the body you'd think it was new.

i used samsung omnia hd for 1 and a half year without any screen protector. and when i sold it, not even a single scratch wwas there. gorilla glass really works
Is there any official confirmation of Gorilla Glass?
Yeah, it definitely works. The flooring in my bathroom almost has a sandpaper consistency (yeah, lovely, I know, but it's a rental flat), and my record of inflicting damage on my phones is nothing I'm proud of, but I mostly blame that da%& flooring.
And, yet, I must have slid my Nokia N8 face down across that thing like 4-5 times and there's not a mark on the glass (the anodized aluminum is another matter unfortunately).
I'd be gutted if it turned out the SGSII didn't have Gorilla Glass. Last thing I need now is another phone with a grease-magnet screen protector.
I am sure Gorilla Glass is great but does it TRULY protect it against scratches from daily use?
Thats what they said about the iPhone but you do end up getting it scratched.
Perhaps Invisible shield for the back and sides and go bare in the front would be the optimal way.
You have to distinguish between scratching the actual screen versus scratching the oleophobic coating off. The iPhone has had the coating since the 3GS so it's a lot easier to scratch it off than to actually scratch the screen.
I've had a Vibrant (Gorilla Glass with no coating) and a few Nexus S's (no gorilla glass but oleophobic coating) and I abused the crap out of the Vibrant but it stayed flawless. The Nexus S... had the coating come off but if you clean it well you won't notice until you grease up the screen again, then the lack of coating becomes apparent. Even still, it stood up pretty well and it feels amazing compared to a screen without the coating.

So a screen protector is not needed or to have it is just a benefit?
If it has Gorilla Glass, I will definitely be going without a screen protector.
Sure an added layer of protection wouldn't hurt, but it comes at the cost of a plastic protector that attracts more dust and grime, detracting from the touch, feel and appearance of the device.
i'm sure it will have gorilla glass.... that seemed to be the trend with this past gen of samsung's Galaxy labeled phones
Of course we know it's got Gorilla Glass on the screen, but anyone know about the lens?
Just an FYI, I've read lots of posts by SGS owners who got scratches on the screen just by carrying the phone in their pocket. I don't doubt any of the reports by posters here, but Google "I scratched my Gorilla glass" and you might not be so confident.

SGS II Camera Protection?

I had my first hairline scratch for SGS2 within 4 days of usage. Probably the Oleophobic coating it had which is more prone than Gorilla Glass.
I hurried to get a Screen protector but what about the camera?
Nobody in the forum seemed to be concerned about giving the 8MP's a decent protection.
Anyone here use a old SP on the lens or leave it as it is?
For a scratch-phobia user like me, probably not leaving chances to luck.

Once I fixed a piece of a screen protector (which corresponded to area of the home button) on the camera's glass but it made my pictures terrible, specially because I covered the flash also. then I removed it. However it was one of the cheapest screen protector. A crystal clear one might be a different story.

Isn't compass showing towards your camera all the time?
I bought the SGP Ultra Capsule case for SGS2. It makes the phone about 1-2 mm thicker so when you put the phone on a flat surface the camera stays intact. Same goes for the screen. I've never used or even liked phone cases before but this case is awesome, my friends didn't even notice my phone had a case It also comes with a Crystal Clear screen protector so you can cut it to make a piece for your camera.
Oh and about the screen. The SGS2 screen is made of Gorilla Glass and has oleophobic coating. Oleophobic coating is not a glass type but coating, something that is added on top of the glass. And that coating doesn't scratch so you can't say that SGS2 is more prone to scratches due to the coating.

Yeap you're right. It should be the scratch-resistant (not proof) gorilla glass. I must make it clear that the scratch is a negligible hairline that only shows when screen's off.
I probably get a cheap crystal protector for the camera. Can't risk getting the goodness scratched =[

How is the screen protector like? I purchased a Matte Screen Protector and hell it makes my Super Amoled screen like rainbow glitter all over my screen. Especially the whites.
Worst money spent on a SP.
enough with cheap screen protector.
Try brando ultraclear and you won't regret it (brando don't pay me).
jokes aside, i had a pleomax screen protector with anti fingerprint treatment that work but the colors were bad. With the brando now i have the fingerprint but the colors are perfect and it's like there is not protector on the screen.

thanks man!
right now there're a few major downsides to SP for SGS2
Anti Fingerprint SP
+No Smudges
- Rainbow speckled display can drive some people mad when the purpose of SGS2 is it's beautiful AMOLED display. I mean, whats the point? Lol.
Crystal Clear SP
+Almost Naked SP
- Smudges.
Note: I am not too sure the extent of smudges on SP affecting user experiences.
But in short, with respect to thread's subject, I find many people have really unique ways to Sealing their SGS2 from wear and tear and by far the Magnet cover is the most creative and unique.
Solutions to SP for Camera
1) Get Martin Field's SP. They come with Camera SP. But they're only ones to do so.
2) Get a cheap crystal SP
3) Use a expensive SP just for the Camera SP.
Afterthoughts
I can't seem to abandon the thought of leaving the camera's glass Naked. I feel so uneasy when I lay it on the table, not knowing when some loose staplers or sand strikes/scratches.
Meanwhile I leave it to my case' thickness to safeguard my camera's glass for the time being...

Middle button

I discovered that the middle button has a screen protector. I carefully removed it with a knife. Without it became much nicer and easier to press button. And most importantly - squeak has gone!
hahaha, after 2 weeks i thought my middle button looked like crap.... i looked closer and was shocked i missed that, i LOVE ripping off protective plastic, and i couldnt understand how i missed it, unrelated i saw i did the same on my microwave buttons like 2 days later
lol cant believe i missed it
I discovered it when we meet with SGN but now is full of scratches
I found mine after having the phone a week. It looked like it was cracked because it was off set just a tad, then i realized what it was and pulled it off
My sister had a similar issue with a phone camera a few years ago. She couldn't understand why every picture was blurry...Yep, the protector over the camera lens was still on the phone LOL.
Mine looks pretty flushed in w/o any bubbles but you can tell there is a protector, Im leaving it there coz my S1 had scratches galore on the home button.

Because it's just simple plastic, where as the screen is scratch resistant glass.

I was wondering why the middle button on my Note had started to look yellow after barely three weeks of use. Awesome find!
Ha I hadn't noticed that as well.
Hadn't noticed the protector over the camera either. There seems to be a second smaller circular protector over the camera lens. Is that supposed to be removed as well? To be honest I haven't noticed any blurriness in the pics so I am wondering if it's better just to leave it there.
Good find, thanks!
I wish I could start a thread saying that there is a black protective tape over the brightly colored S-pen button but unfortunately I can't...
I found the camera lens covering half a week into owning my Note and felt kinda stupid for that... so I looked over every surface to make sure there was no more plastic...
And now I find, 3 weeks in, that I missed out the home button...
the protector is too small to find...
Hahaha 1 time I found protecting plastic after 3 weeks on galaxy s II.....on Note I took him away on 1 day

plastic substrate collapsing due to pressing screen too hard?

I've only just found out that the s6 edge plus has a flexible plastic substrate insteaf of a glass substrate like on the s3 and s4... due to gorilla glass 4 being thinner and the screen underneath is a plastic substrate have any of you experienced rattling sound when you tap the screen too hard?
The problem is me, i have always tapped hard on my screen naturally i have elephant thumbs and fingers and typing tapping softly is not easy for me especially if i am trying to type fast with 1 finger or pressing on apps on homescreen.
The reason for my concern is i have had my replacement s6 edge plus for a week now and using it how i normally do ie tapping it naturally hard. I noticed after that time a certain grippy rattling sound from me tapping on screen and the parts behind the screen rattling. It has happened to me on my notepro 12.2 and tab 4 7 inch which dont have gorilla glass. It got so bad on my note pro 12.2 that i can feel the screen flex domrtimes when i press on the screen. The insides have shifted back so now the parts protrude slightly at the back of the tablet and there are air pockets. Also the rattling dound is annoying.
Was surprised the edge plus was experiencing this issue as it has gorilla glass like my s3 and s4 and they have no rattling issues what so ever because the screen is flat hard thicker gorilla glass and glass substrate.
I think the issue is that gorilla glass 4 and the pladtic substrate combo is likely to give me issues in future ie i think the plastic substrate will detach from the glass tho it is glued down so i think that may not occur but the parts behind it will sink lower or loosen.
I know i have to be careful now how i type on the edge plus but it's hard adjusting when i try to type quickly. Is anyone else experiencing this issue of rattling? It happens particularly the area where the rear camera is placed as that is more hollow. Im not inpressed how samsung reinforce their screens to save weight.
yep i can feel it too

It's going to be a problem isnt it? I have this feeling the plastic substrste is either going to collapse or push back the components behind it so might loosen a cable.
Im being mindful not to press too hard on the screen but im sure I'll lapse if im in a rush tryna type quickly.
I think it was a bad move having thinner gorilla glass tho supposedly stronger it doesn't offer the same rigidity as gorilla glass 2 or 3.
I think many people will have this issue in 6 months as it takes time for it to develop and rattle more i can only speak from experience from my 2 tablets which had the issue.
I just assumed cos it was gorilla glass like my s3 and s4 there wouldn't be any flexing isdue when tapping on the screen but because it's so thin it's pushing on the plastic substrate making the components behind it rattle.
It should be fine if im careful the next 2 years as with my tablets all that's happening is it sinks a bit but everything works fine but the rattling sound is very annoying
So can you feel the screen flexing if you push down on it? Does anyone else feel this pressing the middle of the screen? In places it flexes. Very annoying.

Front Glass/ Screen Fingerprint Resistant?

I've noticed something great about the S8. I nearly get no fingerprints or smudges on the screen. Unlike on the S6 that I always had to wipe every few minutes.
Did they come up with some new magical screen glass? It seems as if different from the back. And why didn't they do it on the back too? As on the back it does get more fingerprints & smudges. But there I don't care so much as I don't look at it often.

They do tend to wear off in 6 months to a year though. Pending use. Idk the quality of the stuff Samsung uses, but hopefully longer

There are a few companies out there that do a clear polyurethane protector for these things. High quality hydrophobic coating, and its like a self healing material. **** is great. Ghost armor is one. I use to run the Illinois market. Then companies like dbrand. Dont do Zagg or clear coat though

Well, fortunately they didn't because otherwise the phone would be super slippery in hand if they'd applied the same (oleophobic) coating as the front screen.
The front glass is supposed to feel very smooth in hand and free of smudges because your fingers need to interact with the screen with minimal friction. Camera lens also need to be smudge free for obvious reasons.
The back of the phone though still needs to rest on your hand and feel secure. Hence, coating is deliberately not applied there to improve grip and minimize the risk of the device slipping from your hands.
Both front and back glass are Gorilla Glass 5 though. Only difference is the coating.
