When I rebooted my phone this morning, it was essentially back to factory settings. The start-up wizard came up. All my shortcuts and widgets were back to the default and none of my apps were working.
Signing in to my google account seemed to restore most stuff. And the market still had a list of all the apps I'd installed, even if they were no longer installed. I had to uninstall and reinstall everything. Had to reset up the email app, twitter, facebook etc. SD card contents were still there.
Just to be clear, the apps weren't actually installed, they just appeared to be in the market.
This was just turning my phone on in the morning - I see no point in having it switched on all night!
Any idea what happened or why or whether it's likely to happen again??
I am sure some would like to help, however, your post is lacking many critical details:
1. Are you rooted?
2. What ROM are you on?
3. Did you install anything new or update anything yesterday?
Details, we're not magicians (ok, maybe some of the Dev's here are)...
sorry, bit of a noob!
i am not rooted, i have a stock nexus one running 2.1.1
last new thing i installed was a few days ago - a geocaching app. had normal behaviour with that installed for those few days. also have installed other updates for various apps.

No biggie, Look around at people's sigs and see how they are set up, gives much information without having to post it all the time.
As for the issue, not sure, never had this issue nor have I heard of it.
Hey everyone.
This evening my girlfriend updated her apps on her S5 running 5.0 and she kept getting a little popup at the bottom of the screen every time an application finished downloading. This has never happened before, so we're trying to see if it's some sort of malware, or a setting that somehow turned itself on that can be disabled.
Attached is a screenshot of a popup.
Any and all help is appreciated! Thanks!
Did she updated via playstore? This "Installation Dialog" i've never seen before.
Yeah, everything was done with the play store.
After doing a little research, it seems to be linked to GO SMS PRO. I'll have her uninstall it and see if it still happens.
You should download malware detector, I've never seen that before either.
Does it still happen?
That's why I stopped using go sms a couple years ago. They added push notifications to the app.
Had her remove GO SMS and it's no longer happening. I'm glad I switched away from GO SMS a while ago. That's awful.
Seems ever since i update my s7 to nougat, and now have nougat on my s8, i'm dealing apps constantly crashing on a daily basis. Apps that never crashed before, ever, are constantly crashing on nougat. And by no means is this a samsung thing, because my friends sony z5 also has similar issues with nougat, what did google do that is causing these apps to crash?
I haven't had a single crash so far.
Not one crash either. You must have a rogue app. System reset.

No crashes at all.
Did you transfer programs, data from your old phone to new one using something like Titanium backup or smart switch? I read a lot of complains about stability issues from people doing that. Or like someone already said, some app creating issue, but not that easy to find which one.

Yes but i've reinstalled the problematic apps, same apps crashed on the s7. I mean it could be the app but they never crashed on android 6, and since nougat has been available to devs since march 2016 i'd imagine they'd fix any compatibility issues by now.
No crashes watsoever on niether my nougat s7 or s8.
I think you have limited options here: either reset the phone and reload all apps fresh from play store, or try to identify what causes the problem and there are few ways to do it. For the record my phone never crashed and I have it since day 1, but I did have couple apps that should be working, installed fine and crash the moment they start.
I had to factory reset out of the box after my first update. It sucked and was a bad first impressikn but it has been working ever since and I've had it for a week.

I used Helium on my S8 coming from S7 as Smart Switch was not importing my apps settings.
Backup went well, but I have some apps that force closes some time.
The funny thing is that I have force closes not on those apps where importing data was for me mandatory (like games or note apps), but on standard apps where I could even install them from Play Store.
I made backup of everything for simplicity, just for not having to insert all the logins and passwords for all my apps.....
I still can't understand why Smart Switch failed to import my data when I was coming from Samsung S7 with Nougat update, so if someone maybe knows why, please tell me...but as far as I've read, I haven't noticed big complain and force closes after importing with Smart Switch... Maybe they where importing from a non Nougat Samsung.....
In my actual case, resetting device would be a real problem as I have a lot of apps and reinstalling them would mean to lose an entire day in doing the job.
If someone knows how to fix things, maybe cleaning things up or so, please reply.
If there's no solution, I think I'll do only a data backup with Helium and then go through reset and consequent Play Store install of all apps list previously saved on AppBrain so to have the complete list already set...but it's still a huge work!!

2 s8's here and neither have crashed once yet. Do a factory reset, and install all your apps manually from the play store and be done with crashes.

Your crash seems to be isolated to one app. An app that I wouldn't be too surprised is crashing. The OP on the other hand post would seem to suggest he's expierencing crashes from multiple apps.
Hello,
Yesterday, several apps I downloaded through the google play store (sideloaded weeks ago, never had any issues) and one from the amazon app store are grayed out and I get an error when I try opening them that says "SD card not available" and goes on to tell me the SD card where the app installed isn't available. I've never had an SD card in the tablet. I can click "download again," but of course that brings me to the amazon app store.
I have tried re-installing, force stopping and clearing caches, restarting, and updating apps. The weird thing is I can get to the apps if I take another route in ie. if I go on google maps (not affected by issue) and go to a restaurant's website, it opens in Chrome (app affected by issue). Then, Chrome runs normal.
If it makes any difference, the apps that don't work are Chrome, Gmail, YouTube, Memrise, Hulu, and Google Sheets.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I had the same problem today with Aquamail. I went to another launcher that I had installed through the Play Store, and uninstalled it from there. Then a reinstall worked. And then the icon for the app appeared in both launchers. I have no idea why it said it was an error with the SD card. There's just some bug with whatever new update they gave us. But that's the only app I had it occur on.

Hmm, I tried uninstalling the app in every way I can think of - including through the play store - and no dice. I have also found that when I uninstall the app, the icon doesn't go away. When I uninstall from the play store and try to uninstall from the home screen, it says the app wasn't found in the list of installed apps. But when I tap to open, it gives the same SD card error.
I'm still really puzzled by the fact this isn't limited to google play apps...does that mean it's something with the OS?

The way I uninstalled was by going to another launcher (total launcher) . You tried that also? I only had it happen with that one app, and it was from the Google Play Store. As far as why it's happening, I really don't know. But it seems to have happened to me today, which makes me think it had something to do with an update either yesterday or today.

Oh no I haven't tried another launcher - didn't know what that was until I just looked.
I also notice that every app I update grays out now. Newly installed apps don't appear on the home screen. However, they all open fine if I open it through the app store or another functioning app. So I'm wondering if I uninstall it through total launcher if it won't even appear on the home screen once re-installed.
How do you install a launcher? I installed one, but when I hit the home button, it brings me back to the default Amazon launcher.

It sounds like this won't help you, but I'll point you to it anyway. Look for the XDA thread called New: Any Launcher, No Root (Launcher Hijack V3). This talks about installing other launchers and hijacking the home button. Sorry that I can't think of anything else. You might try I factory reset and start over, but you may not want to do that, and it may not solve your problem.

Sorry, I didn't see one of your posts. I have also had the problem where anything I install does not show on the fire launcher home screen. But it will show on other launchers. This started yesterday or today for me, so something in one of the updates caused this. If you use another launcher it will probably solve the problem of not seeing the apps on a home screen. But you said it did not help your problem with those that you cannot delete. Evie is a nice launcher that is simple to use, so you might start with that one.
I think I was wrong in what I told you before. I thought I was able to uninstall aquamail which said something about requiring the SD card. But it just happened to me with a different app, and I get that sd card error. So I think I was misled because I uninstalled it and then reinstalled over in the other launcher. Then when I looked back on the fire launcher, the icon was there and it could be clicked. But if you really want to get rid of it and not reinstall, I don't see a way to do that yet. Sorry to have been on the wrong track.

Okay, I learned a little more. I'm not sure if all of these steps are necessary. But I went to settings, apps and games, All, Home Pages. That's the fire launcher. I cleared its cache and data and force stopped. Then when it is launched again, the apps that couldn't be deleted are now no longer showing. However, if you had arranged all the icons in some kind of order, now it is all alphabetical. I also think that newly installed apps do show, but I haven't really done much testing with it yet. I'm mostly sticking with another launcher. So I don't really care about the fire launcher, but once in awhile, I might like to use it. So it's good to see that we can clean these things up.
EDIT: Ignore what I said about it now being alphabetical. It seems to be in the order that apps are added.
Got the same Problem now, but on a new Fire HD8!
Apps were running fine yesterday or a day before and now 3 apps installed from Google Play Store are Grayed out and give the error "SD-Card not Available" and i should insert the same SD-Card... (never had extra any inside). And its only Apps from Play Store. All three Apps are Smarthome apps: Philips HUE, Kasa and Yonomi. The funny Thing.. If I open The Google Playstore and and search my app, then i can either deinstall or open app. And if i open app from there it works...he starts app with no Problem.
Curious this happens to others at the same time...
Maybe helpful for determining Problem: Files i Used to install the Google Playstore:

Would be great if someone found out the Problem and a Fix for that.

No, i am using the Stock Launcher and didnt do any changes to that. Besides that i do have the Option to deinstall the Apps and the Apps are still running fine, but only when opened from Play Store.
And i dont think deleting cache or forcing stop of App will do any good as long as the Apps itslf still work.
Yea, there must have been some minor update. He showed me something in system updates, but OS is still 5.6.0.0

I'm talking about clearing cache, data, and force stop of the Home Pages app itself. I'm not talking about the apps that you installed. Try it and see what happens.
Looked around and found this from User "Ms_Carla":

Did exactly the same steps above and now works fine again. Grayed out Apps are back. <3

Well not exactly the same... In Your Post you say to Stop/End the Launcher.. Thats different to Appstore.
I dont like fondling around with launchers... And i dont want other Launchers than Stock or missing/deleted Icons And Installing other Launcher to fix a problem is no alternative
You are right that I overlooked the part about App Store. I assumed that person was telling you to do the same thing that I did.
You don't have to install other launchers. I was just giving an example of how you could see the apps and do what you needed to do by installing another launcher. I wrote that part before I realized what the "fix" was for the stock launcher. But if you want the original stock launcher to work, you will need to do the steps that I mentioned. Clear cache and data and then force stop for Home Pages, which is the name of the stock launcher

I had the same problem, your advice:
"settings, apps and games, All, Home Pages. That's the fire launcher. I cleared its cache and data"
pulled out all the problems, thank you. I had three programs, including PLAY STORE, give that error message and then grey out and become unclickable and unable to be removed. I had did a factory reset three times in two days, and then couldn't get PLAY STORE or any apps downloaded through it to show up on the HOME screen. your suggestion of clearing the "Home Pages" cache and data brought everything working properly. Thank you.

Glad I could help. It's happened to me a couple more times. I learned that the easiest way is just doing a force stop on the Home Pages app. Clearing cache and data means a little more work when the launcher comes back up (it wants you to step through some instructional screens, but I think you can exit out of them) . But if you don't have another launcher to switch to, I don't think you can do the force stop while you are actually using Home Pages as the home launcher. I can't be sure about that because I am rooted now, so the behavior might be different if I was not rooted.
Clearing cache and data probably works for all cases, so maybe that's the way to go. I've made it a little more confusing by adding the detail that I just did in that first paragraph!
Slowly does it

I had this problem. Tried everything to no avail
But I left my fire 10 on all day as I use alexa a lot and the greyed out icons slowly came back.
Restarted the tablet and they where greyed out again but they came back quicker this time.
I know it's a pain to leave it on but something seems to be running slow in the os,
Not a permanent fix but it may help until an update os comes out
Things were going great the last few days on Android P until this morning. All of a sudden, post a few playstore app updates, the OS became unusable. Google Services (this apk possibly got an OTA update) kept stopping in a loop and all apps started closing....which ended up blocking me from using the phone (couldn't access settings etc. and was too lazy to adb into the device to troubleshoot). Ended up rolling back to oreo. Anyone else faced this?
More information please, where you rooted, custom kernel.ect
I was getting fc'z like crazy yesterday after a fresh install, what I ended up havingto do was a factory reset in twrp and have had none since.
No root, no custom kernel/recovery. Just pure Google provided images and apps from play store

no such issues here (yet).
clean install, no root.
Clean install of Android P with Magisk 16.1 last night. No issues so far but I'm not even 24 hours in. I do know that the Android P dev notes from Google report that the system can get extremely unstable over time. So the OPs issues make sense.
The way I'm looking at it is if my phone runs perfectly on Android P for 5-6 days before starting to hiccup, then I have no problem quickly reflashing Android P without wiping data every 5-6 days since it takes like 30 seconds and doesn't force me to re-download or re-setup any apps. To me, this would be worth it in order to run an otherwise stable version of Android that most other phones won't get until this time next year.
But, if I only make it 48-72 hours before the phone starts really acting up, I'll probably go back to 8.1 until the next iteration of Android P dev preview is released.
Clean flashed P the day it dropped, flashed magisk and flash when both were updated to support them. Only minor crashes every other day or so.
Playstore has a "huge" bug.Did you have beta apps (like WhatsApp,play services etc)? When you go to the tab "Beta" and try to hit on an application, playstore closes without fc message.
