Ok, something really weird.
Yesterday, I was showing off my Tab to a friend, and we kind of got stuck on comparing how fast the portrait/landscape switch works on ADW launcher vs. stock touchwiz. So we were tipping the device back and forth for a while when it froze for a few seconds.
Trying to get it to react, I hit back, home, power, probably in that order, but I'm not sure.
The reaction, a message pops up about the image capture being saved. Then again. And indeed, in my Gallery I now have a folder call Screen Captures and inside it there are two screenshots. One of my standard homescreen and one of a force close error message (for the calculator app I use - Kreac).
I've been trying to reproduce this since, but without any success. Is there a hidden screenshot app in there somewhere?
Hi , just keep pressing the back button and double press the power button to take screenshots.

Indeed.
Is this common knowledge that I had missed? I ask because I've seen several threads on various forums claiming that there is no app and no way to take a screenshot?
Interesting. Is there a service running that handles this feature or is it a core process?
Don't know. But I just noticed there's an entry 'com.sec.android.app.screencapture' in the application manager list.

i remember it... but ive removed it now and theres no apk, so theres no way to restore without flashing
i was trying screens with one of the root apps on the market and they all came out in funky colors so i got rid of it (must have taken sammys built in app out as well by mistake)
IMHO, best way to take screenshot on any device, galaxy tab included, is via ddms.bat ( Dalvik Debug Monitor) under dir tools of SDK. You can find "screen capture" under Device menu.
Can't for the life of me see how using DDMS can be "better" than this on-device method in general use!
This is a good find - we need a sticky for these tidbits!

Dave

It's a good tip, but I much prefer using DropCap 2 from the Market, at least for when I'm not using a full-screen application. Talking of which, are in-game screenshots possible with the hardware button method ?
I was able to capture a screen shot by pressing back and then pressing the power button twice. But that does not capture the screen that I wanted. Instead, it captured the screen of "back" when I press the back button.
This button combination does not make much sense in my opinion. Any say?
It works fine for me in most apps (including Angry Birds), but not in the stock Video player or in the Gameloft games like N.O.V.A.
Regards,
Dave
Is there any other way to do it ? Ad soon as I hit back it goes back to the previous screen and take screenshot of that screen. Isnt that kinda pointless?

For this cases I suggest ddms in the previous post. ddms don't need any user interface and grab everything, also video played in stock video player. And grabbed screenshot can be saved directly on HD, rotated, discarded...
I find that "holding" the back button down until vibrates (rather than merely just pressing it) and then pressing the power button just once works consistently well for me. Haven't needed DDMS yet.
For me it works fine; keep pressing back and tap power button.

Hit back and power at the same time... and then hit power again... and you hear a sound like a camera shutter... and says it's saved.
Dear all
Very simple
. Press and hold back key
. Short press power key
screen will automatic save in folder Screen picture

Ok, I got it now. The theory is to hold the back button and do not let go until you hit the power button twice. It works!! But it takes quite a while for the picture to show up in the Gallery. I thought the screen capture did not work.
SOLVED: How to screen capture if Back key exits from the current screen
I just solved how to capture the screen if holding down the Back key exits from the application so you end up capturing the previous screen, or the Home screen in most cases.
For example, in Maps, I couldn't capture the Map as it goes back to the Home screen once I hold down the back key. The technique is to go one screen deeper; example in Maps, press Menu key then select Layers. When you hold down the Back key, the Maps image screen is displayed. Keep holding the Back key then press the Power key. Screen capture now completed on the desired screen.
I think you can do the same technique for other apps.
Hope you enjoy using your Galaxy tab as much as I do, like me having sleepless nights on the porch using Google sky map, or playing Guitar solo (paid version is much better).

That's strange... it should not go back until you have taken your finger off the back button and if you hit the power button whilst holding the back button it should cancel out any back button command.
I don't know if its me or if my Atrix has a bug or something. But anyways I rooted my phone a couple days ago and everything seemed fine. I installed launcherpro plus today, set it up and that also ran fine.
Well I decided to go back to the stock launcher and now when I hit the home button nothing happens. I open the app drawer, press the home button nothing happens. I go to the desktop, go through the screens and press the home button so that I can be taken back to the home screen and nothing happens. I feel the heptic feedback but the screen goes nowhere. However the double tap to open a certain app still works.
Is there something im doing wrong or do the home button not take you to the home screen?
*Update* it must be working correctly. I opened apps, pressed the home button and it exited me out of the app. I don't know, but for some reason I was thinking that once you press the home button it will also take you back to the homescteen. But oh well...

Yeah that's what i downloaded and that's what what was causing the issues.
If you download moto home fix from the market and install it, the home button on the bottom of the phone doesn't work correctly if you go back to the stock "home" launcher. If you open the app drawer and press the home button nothing happens. If you went to one of the other screens and pressed the home button to be taken back.to the home screen, nothing happens. However if you uninstall the moto home fix then the button works correctly.

Is anyone having issues with the home button? I will tap the home button to go to the home screen, but instead, it will take me to the recent apps menu about half the time. This is getting really annoying, and I'd like to get it fixed.
Does anyone else have this issue/know how to fix it? Is this a software or hardware issue?

Sounds like a mix of software / user issue to me.
I was doing the same thing so try this and see if it feels better.

With default settings a quick tap will bring you home after about 1.5 seconds
holding it brings up your recent apps, it sounds like you're holding it for the 1.5 seconds as you're expecting a delay for it to go to the home screen and its causing it to open up recent apps.
To remove this 1.5 second delay double tap home quickly and open up S-Voice, when S-Voice opens hit your menu button and turn off the double tap home to open, then close the app.
Now when you hit home there will be no delay as the system doesn't pause to wait for a second tap to open up s-voice and it just goes home. it also means you won't feel the need to hold it until it goes home inadvertently causing you to open up multitasking instead.
I multi-task a lot and switch between apps often. Instead of using the physical home button of the S4, is there a way I can have a feature that maps the function to either the menu or the back button and access it only when I long-press it? I feel like I would wear down the physical button and it takes more effort.
Thanks!

I know how you feel when using the home button. After long searching, I found an app that uses swipe gestures on screen to activate actions like going to home screen and bringing up the recent app. This is a $0.99 app called Swipe Home Button in the Play Store. For what it is worth, definitely a buy. There is also a trial for you to try, so it can't hurt to check it out!
Ever since the Oreo update, my home screen apps don't open automatically with the button press. My apps are at the top row, and I'm using the official remote. if I click the button on any app it brings up a menu showing "OPEN" "MOVE" and "REMOVE FROM FAVORITES" actions. What happened to just clicking on the app and it opens? Is this an Oreo change, or an option I can turn off? Super annoying!

This is the long press action on mine. I suspect something is goofy with yours.

Great call, that made me think. I had Mouse Toggle installed for the old FIOS app which I no longer use. I uninstalled Mouse Toggle and it's back to the way it should be; single press opens the app. Thanks!
