Somehow activated an edge notification sidebar when screen is off? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I was cleaning my screen yesterday and somehow activated a sidebar that showed more detailed notifications than the always-on display. It was on the left side of the screen (the same side I have my edge display configured for). It had a checkbox at the top, and showed who sent the last email I received. I could swipe to a second screen that had a news ticker.
I have no idea how I activated this. I am sometimes able to do it again by cleaning the screen when the phone is powered off. But no amount of swiping/clicking with my finger seems to be able to do it. I can only accidentally do it by cleaning the screen with a cloth (wiping up and down on the screen).
Any ideas what this is, or how to activate it properly? I haven't seen anything about it in reviews, and I don't see it mentioned in the manual. I tried to take a screenshot, but apparently you can't do that when the screen is powered off.
Edit: I figured it out. It's the "Edge Feed". You activate it by swiping your finger up and back on the edge of the screen while the screen is powered off. There's a bunch of settings for it in the edge screen settings. I somehow just never noticed that portion of the feature before.

Swipe up then down quickly on the edge of the screen while the screen is off and you will see your notifications.
If you go into the Edge settings and go to Edge Feeds and you can see the settings there.

Thanks. I just figured it out as you were replying. Cool feature!

Haha - im guessing you are new to this Edge thing?
They have it on S6 Edge too - it bassically works by swiping the edge of the screen (while screen is off) and displaying basic information - you can continue swiping to get more minipanels
You can also use it as night watch - when phone is docked

Also you can asign edge colours to your contacts so if someone calls, txt or emails and the phone is screen-down - the edges will glow in a specific colour
I found that much more entertaining

Work with the Note Edge screen

Hello Edge users,
Im using the Edge now for a month and running into some issues. Maybe you can help me
1. When using Chromecast to mirror the screen it also shows the edge screen which is useless. How can I prevent that part from projecting?
2. When I make a screencapture it also captures the edge screen which is also nog usefull most op te time
3. When Im in the car the phone is in a holder. One app showed traffic camera notifications in the middle of the screen on my Note 2. It is now showed on the edge screen where I can hardly see it. Can I get it back in the middle?
4. When using another app in the car, incoming calls are shown on the edge screen, but because of the phone holder I cannot reach the accept button. Can I get a call in the car onscreen?
I hope you can help me.
Settings call settings in the phone app will fix the call on thedge issue.
Swipe from the left on screen for screen shots.
Chromecast... ? Dunno what to tell you.
Other apps. Dunno

Power on Edge Screen Without Power Button

In playing around with my Verizon Note Edge today, I discovered I was able to turn on the Edge screen by quickly swiping from the bottom of the edge screen, up about a third of the way, and then quickly back down (starting at the top and swiping down and then back up also works). It turns on the night clock and then started scrolling showing any pending notifications...pretty sweet! I do have the flip case on the phone, but did remove it to test it without and it still seemed to work. I have not been able to find anything documented on this, but it worked for me. Anyone else? I am really glad I made the decision to wait for the Edge!

I use action launcher 3 as launcher replacement and it has a tap feature that allows you to tap on the screen to turn it off, similar to LG G2 and G3... I use it all the time. not the same as what you posted but I wanted to share just in case someone is wondering

This hidden features hardly people knows but I already know this thing.
This can also be a hassle as I found out when the edge screen kept on rubbing against the inside of my pocket and accidentally turn on and drain my battery.
You must have some pretty tight jeans for it to do that...

This is a really cool feature - I notice that your screen stays on for sometime while scrolling thru your notifications... I have the VZW Note Edge as well but my screen times out within 30 seconds regardless of what I have my "Edge screen timeout" set to in system settings / Edge Screen - is there another way to keep the Edge screen active or from timing out so quick?
Just with the setting you already mentioned...it seems to work for me.
Use the gravity app....
Excellent app. I only use the power button to turn phone on and off...
And the bonus has been I don't accidently turn off the screen when turning volume up and down... was a constant menace on my note 2

Tip: No circle case needed to check the time

I haven't seen this tip posted yet so I thought I'd put it up.
You don't need to have one of those fancy circle cases to see what the time is. You don't even have to press the power button or tap the screen. While the screen is off, swipe your finger from the top to the middle of the screen. It will show you a clock that disappears as soon as soon as you lift your finger. It will also show you your notification bar. So if you have your lock screen set to not show you any notifications, you can use this method to see if you have a text or email or whatever, with out having to unlock your phone.
EDIT: This doesn't appear to work on all phones. YMMV.
You can do it from the middle of the screen also. Just slide your finger downwards.
And of course... it doesn't work on the at&t model.
Doesn't seem to work for me...
Is it double tap then swipe? I'm trying all sorts of tapping combinations and nothing interesting is happening, other than the screen turning on as normal when you double tap
Place thumb on screen, slide down. The screen has to be off of course.

-Turn screen off
-Put finger anywhere on screen
-Without releasing, swipe down
-Release finger
Is that right? I've tried about 10 times and I'm getting nothing. Is there a setting to enable/disable this somewhere? I might have disabled it by mistake
You have to keep your thumb on the screen. As soon as you lift your finger, the screen goes back to sleep. You should notice the notification light come on if its working.

It's kind of annoying. I found this awhile ago.
If you can't get it to work ya the screen, one-one-thousand,then swipe down.
I am amazed how people don't find this out on their own within the first hour of handling the phone.

Is there a way to disable this?
From what I've read, it does not work on AT&T models. And I don't think there is a way to disable the function, for models that have it.
And of course it's in the insanely small/thin font that you have no chance of reading if you're long sighted but aren't wearing your reading glasses (e.g. when you wake up during the night).

Correct. Your Lock Screen must be set to at least Swipe, and the screen must be locked at the time. It won't work on None, or if your phone hasn't locked yet due to setting a Lock timer after the screen timeout.
At risk of sounding dense, what is the main benefit of this? I rarely use this, but don't recall seeing notifications with it, at least not the sort that show you a text. I see a clock and the status bar at the top (signal strength, etc).
If I want to see the time, I could wake the screen up, including by double-tapping (so no need for access to the rear buttons). I see more notifications that way as well. One advantage of this would be if I'm in a dark room, and I'm trying to avoid disturbing people by lighting up the whole screen. But at least for me, that scenario is not common.
Am I just missing something about what makes this feature handy?
It's useless imo. And what annoys me more is the fact, that I can't turn it off.
I'm wondering if disabling swipe views and doubled tap to screen on actually increases battery life. My nexus 5 with custom kernel had that function but battery drain was significant.

Honestly it is just easier. Instead of Double Tapping to turn on, checking for notifications (if you have none or none you are concerned with), then double tapping off.
It is a quick peek. Shows you the time and notifications. You don't always have to wake your phone by double tapping. It is a 1 quick swipe gesture that turns the screen on, shows you relevant information, and turns off in 1 swoop.
I use it ALL the time. I have the Verizon model btw. Whether you use it or not, it is a super nice feature and just something that really adds to the convenience.

mines still not working after restart
I faced the same problem. Is any way to get solved that?
I disabled all my Edge apps, they use a quite a chunk of ram for the purpose they serve.
The problem is not to disable Edge apps but feeds not working

I have the same issue when I swipe the edge on the s7 edge when the screen is locked it says unable to show notifications
Has never worked for me. Shows "unable to show notifications"
Not working for me either.
I was disabling some apps with Package Disabler Pro and I killed a bunch of them.
First thing I noticed was that mu Samsung S Clear Cover wasnt working (when I flipped the cover the screen wouldnt turn off), a simple restart fixed the problem but then I noticed the Edge Feed wasnt.
When I swipe my finger up and down on any side, nothing happens nor shows up.
I did notice that when I do the gesture the phone wouldnt sleep anymore (simply by holding my thumb on the home button after doing the up-down thing would unlock the phone) and the screen would still be black
Still no solution? I have a hungarian S7 edge and am facing the same ptoblem using the firmare version G935FXXU1APC8.
Solution to edge notifications not working
I found this for the s6. I was having the same issues with my s7. This fixed it!
How to solve “Unable to show notifications” problem for edge screen on Galaxy S6 edge?
You will get the “Unable to show notifications” on the edge screen if you disable notifications on lock screen,
As edge screen on Galaxy S6 edge is part of the lock screen. If you, for privacy reasons, disable notifications on lock screen, notifications will not be shown on edge screen as well.
Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge offers you three options on notifications on lock screen (in Settings—Sound and notifications –-Notifications on lock screen **I searched "notifications on lock screen in my settings***):
1.Show content. Notification will be shown, as well as the preview of the notification.
2.Hide content. Notification will be shown, but no preview of the content.
3.Do not show notifications. Notifications will not be shown on lock screen, including edge screen. If this is selected, you will get the “Unable to show notifications” on edges screen on Galaxy S6 edge.
So, the solution for this “Unable to show notifications” problem on edge screen on Galaxy S6 edge, is to choose Hide content or Show content for notifications on lock screen, not the third one.

Disable home button?

Is there a way to disable the home button from being on all the time? I can't for the life of me understand why this is a "feature". I am always turning on the display when I pull the phone out of my pocket, or it turns on in my pocket. I really dislike this and would like to turn it off. I've already set the sensitivity to lowest.

Go to settings -> lock screen and security - always on display - content to show - choose "clock or information"
Then go to
settings -> display -> navigation bar - turn off "Unlock with Home button"
in this menu, also decrease the sensitivity for hard press so you don't accidentally activate it
Even with the icon turned off, That area is still a way to unlock the phone but requires a hard press after doing the above
there is a setting under display to keep screen turned off inside pocket, that should solve your problem.
Thanks for the info guys. I have already done all of that. I was hoping for a way to just turn it off.

Seriously this is so annoying. I've already changed those settings as well and it changes nothing.
settings -> display -> navigation bar - turn off "Unlock with Home button" seems like it would be a the obvious way to disable it but it does nothing.
There are 3 options in always on display. Make sure you change off the default which is "clock or information and home". I didn't have to change the sensitivity and can unlock by pressing the screen without the button being visible. This actually got me to look at always on again and schedule a screen the works for me.

This must be fixed in a future update! I have also changed all of the above settings and my phone turns on in my pocket dozens of times a day and my battery life has been awful because of it. I like the pressure button, it really cool to use it to go home from any full screen app, but why can it be used to turn on the screen when it's off? There is a power button on the side to turn it on!
for me, turn on that unlock feature doesn't help anything
is a software problem I suppose
I have same problem,
it unlocked it self in my bag several times. First time I didnt have pattern lock, so it went to whatsapp and sent some picture to a friend of mine.
Next time I had pattern lock, but it went to upper menue and presses wifi and gps off.
So this problem is really bad, I am just thinking to sell my S8+ and to buy a conventional smartphone with a normal button.

I've had similar issues. It has turned in in my pocket and taken a bunch of blank photos. There really needs to be an option to disable the button completely, the hardware buttons works just fine.
I've found that enabling the option "keep screen turned off" to keep the screen off in dark locations like pocket/purse in display settings along with the lowest home button sensitivity helps though.

It is true, also in point of fact the keep screen off in pocket never worked for me going back several Samsung phones. A lil sweat is all it needs, btw trying watching a movie in the shower, some stray hot water drops will register as touches as well even though no one is touching the screen. Keep stuff like this in mind before you outright call people liars.
