MHL adapter (11 pin) won't fit in S4 (SGH-i337m) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I have an 11-pin MHL adapter (it's the long one which slides deep into the phone) which I used regularly with my old S3. I now own an S4 (SGH-i337M) and the adapter *should* fit and work, but does not do either. The plug won't slide fully into the connector; and sitting loose and halfway in obviously doesn't establish an MHL connection. When I shine a flash light into the port on the phone, it's clearly too shallow to accept the longer 11 pin plug.... which makes no sense as all specs and info on the phone indicate that the S3 and S4 should use the exact same 11-pin adapter. Can anyone explain this; or explain how I can use MHL with my new phone?

[Q] A few questions about connecting the Galaxy Note (Int ver) to HDTV/projector

Hi, I have a few questions in regard to connecting the Galaxy Note to the HDTV/projector.
Q1: Is it true that no matter which adapter I use, I need to supply power to the adapter? If so, could you please let me know the reason? I guess this can be done by connecting the stock AC adapter which came with the Note to the adapter via a usb cable.
Q2: In a retail store, I found the adapter in transparent plastic packaging. However, in other stores such as the Samsung store, I found one in white paper packaging (like the one shown in the attachment. I know the one being shown is for the S3). What is the difference? I asked Samsung but they only asked me to buy from their store which does not offer any discount.
Q3: What is the difference between a HML Adapter vs. a HDTV Adapter?
Q4: In some postings, some people mentioned that they could connect the Galaxy Note to a projector by serially connecting the two devices via the HDTV Adapter and a HDMI-VGA adapter. Others said that the Galaxy Note cannot output VGA signals. I am a bit confused. Is there an adapter that is capable of connecting the Note to the HDTV and a projector (of course not at the same time)? An adapter that can do so without external power is the most desirable.
Thanks.
1. Yes u need the power adapter, as phone doesnt hv enough power to output hdmi signal.
2. Mhl cable outputs digital hdmi out for an hdtv/ digital screen.
3. I would buy the one in plastic box for s2 n note. Other seems to be for s3- and i hear it has a different pin configuration. Tho im not 100% sure. I can confirm s2 adapter - in see thru plastic box works.
4. You need an hdmi to vga adapter for analog projectors, this converts digital to analog- once u have that u can project via that. I hv a projector wit dvi, if u hv a simillar projector u dont need such a converter but a cable.

[SOLVED] MHl without adapter?

Hello,
my screen supports MHL out of the box - a cable followed along with it.
Do I really have to buy the S4 MHL Adapter for getting it to work?
EDIT:
Thanks for answers! Looks like it requires 11PIN MHL

That's what followed along with my screen, a MHL cable (microusb to HDMI)

Then it should work, you should try, if it's going through the micro usb then theres not high chance it will brick your phone

Well, it's a 5-pin MHL to HDMI, is that the problem?
Wikipedia said:
Connectors
As noted in the 'Features' section, the MHL standard is connector agnostic. The different types of connections, include:
5-pin MHL-HDMI adapter/dongle
The first implementations use the most popular mobile connection (micro USB) and the most popular TV connection (HDMI). Other than the physical connectors, USB and HDMI technology are not being used. It is exclusively MHL signaling through the connectors and over the cable.
11-pin MHL-HDMI adapter/dongle
The Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S4 use a connector that is similar to the original 5-pin MHL-HDMI adapter/dongle, but it uses 11-pins in order to achieve a few functional improvements over the 5-pin design.
It supports the use of USB and MHL simultaneously. (Note that the new Samsung 11-pin MHL-HDMI adapter also has a USB On-The-Go port).
Samsung’s Galaxy S III/ Note 2 can power the MHL-HDMI adapter (when used with a non-MHL-compatible-TV). Although this can theoretically also be done with the standard 5-pin micro-USB connector, the Galaxy S III's 11-pin connector is believed to be the first smartphone that supports this functionality.
The Galaxy S III was the first MHL device to use a different connector - one that is not compatible with all other MHL devices and accessories.[9]
MHL cable [edit]
Passive cables are also available at retail that allows consumers to connect an MHL-enabled device directly to an MHL TV.

If your 5 pin doesn't work then it will require any 11 pin version (I think)

Video Out?

I read I need a slimport adapter to get video out of my Nexus 4. I got an MHL adapter with a little slimport converter. My Nexus 4 doesn't seem to take the slimport connector (which has an extra little tab on it), but the MHL fits. I can't seem to get video out working though. Does it only work at certain times or do I have to activate it somehow? Has anyone gotten video out to work? Why does every site say I need a slimport adapter and then the slimport adapter doesn't fit?
Do you have a link to this "slimport converter"?
I cant imagine a thing not costing less then just buying an actual slimport/mydp adapter.
It's the equivilent of a ethernet to sata adapter, there would need to be active parts to convert the stream from one to the other, they're completely unrelated.
There's no way it's just a passive thing, slimport/my and mhl use microusb as the connector, but that's about the only thing they have in common.

[Q] Adapter

I want to use the charging cable of the Galaxy S5 also for other devices e.g. tablet. The plug of the Galaxy is unique, is there an adapter to make it Mini USB or USB. The advantage would be not to have to change the cable daily
just buy a miniUSB cable and use for all the device included S5.

Simultaneous use of OTG and mhl

Greetings,
How can I get simultaneous use of OTG and mhl to work on my S5? SM-G900I
Thanks!
I have the Samsung Smart Dock, which provides that and works with the Note 4 (and some earlier Notes and Galaxy S). The water resistant port cover stops me from trying it with the S5 though, and I don't want to take that off right now. Unfortunately it's not easy to get an extension cable to try it either, due to the custom pin layout used for MHL on the S3 onwards.
@arghness thanks for the input - I found conflicting feedback saying it doesn't work with the S5. what is the model number for the smart dock you have? I'd really appreciate if you could give it a go

Samsung Smart Dock EDD-S20JWE, EDD-S20KWK, EDD-S20JWEGSTA, EDD-S20EWEG, EDD-S20EWE,
There are quite a few model number associated with this dock
Compatible with the Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy Mega (Not compatible with Galaxy Note 3 or Galaxy S 5)
Ah, okay. There are definitely posts (and videos) of it working with a Note 4 and I've actually had mine working with a Note 3.
On my S5, I can't even get the dock far enough in to the port for charging, due to the port protecting flap. Even without that, it might be an issue because the port is recessed in to the body so that the flap is flush with the outside of the case.
I still get the feeling that all the support is still there, if we could get a working extension cable. There's this: http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-mhl-ext-xxg.html but I've heard that it doesn't even work properly with Note 2 (from an XDA post).
You're probably out of luck, sorry. I was hoping to be able to get it working as well.
hmm..okay, i've bought the smart dock, will give it a go when it arrives

It looks like the S5 does not support simultaneous use of OTG and MHL as samsung implemented a 5-pin mini usb connector. Unlike the S 3/4 and note 2/3/4 where 11-pins mini usb connector enable simultaneous use of OTG and MHL. I don't understand why Samsung downgraded the S5.

I don't think it is possible
More info here:

Samsung probably downgrade S5 to a standard 5-pin micro usb connector to ensure broad compatibility with mhl adapater - this also prevented simultaneous use of OTG and mhl since in a 5 pins usb connector the same signalling wires are use for both mhl and usb-otg.
the S5 implement micro usb 3.0, I'm wondering if there is any adapter out there that can convert this into a 11-pin micro usb 2.0 connector??

That post doesn't say that MHL/OTG isn't possible with the S5, it doesn't mention the S5 at all. The pages I've seen seem to indicate that it's still 11 pin:
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=s5+11+pin&oq=s5+11+pin
And other pages indicate that it can do MHL and have power, but that power is optional, unlike the S3:
http://blog.clove.co.uk/2014/02/05/mhl-adapter-samsung-galaxy-need/
They don't say whether OTG can be done concurrently, though, but I don't see why not.
I have a "11pin mhl v1.0 to hdmi adapter cable" that works fine with mirroring my S5 (SM-G900I lollipop) to an HDMI Display (Monitor or TV). The cable doesn't have usb input to test otg at the same time though. This cable also charges my S5 while mirroring.
I am interested in using my S5 as a desktop pc so would like to know if any one has had success with mirroring thier S5 on a TV/Monitor and using a Mouse & Keyboard at the same time!!!
TIA
any updates? Have someone found an adapter that does mhl and otg at the same time.... I have tried one adapter that does not work and asks several sellers on ebay about other adapters and all said either they don't know or it does not work simultaneously....
No adapter but you can use samsung sidesync between phone and pc.
sidesync? I want to convert my phone into a desktop/tv box and I don't want to use bluetooth
sidesync converts your phone in to an android pc using your pc's monitor, mouse, keyboard through usb cable or wifi. Your phone will display on the monitor like screen mirroring and you use your pc's mouse and keyboard to navigate and type.
sidesync wont work with tv because you need to install sidesync on pc.
ah ok thx interesting but it defeats the purpose of autonomy
