Sign email with digital certificate - Gmail App + Exchange - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I'm trying to figure out whether it is possible to sign emails that i write in Gmail App (using Exchange account) with a digital certificate?
Is there are way?
I have the pfx certificate installed but can't find a way to tell Gmail app to actually use it. Is it something that's supported at all?
I know that LGs and Samsungs have some sort of S/MIME built in support, but clean Android seems to have no such option...
Thanks,
Daniel.

I think, this isn't supported by stock Android at all. You have to use a 3-rd party email app. I would be interested in a stock android solution, though.

Exchange Email/2.2/Work Email

Ok, with my company's Exchange email, I find that the email settings work fine on devices like the HTC hero, Droid Eris, Aria, EVO...but does not authenticate on the N1.
On 2.1 I was using the "Work Email" app from the G1 found at nexeo.net. Worked 100% perfect for push with my company's email. Email only.
Now on Froyo that app does not work at all, wont even open. Force Close instantly. Understandable, its an old app, not supported anymore.
Question is...is there a way to get the HTC sense email app only on my N1? i dont want to root or anything or run any other rom. I like the new 2.2 froyo.
or would I be better off buying an app like Touchdown? or are there other apps I do not know about that may solve my problem?
Thanks in advance.
From my understanding, you use the email application. You can use it for pop / imap and Exchange ActiveSync.
not with my company's server settings, they work just fine on the HTC branded devices listed above, but not in the N1 email application.
You can try Touchdown, its a paid app but seems to work well with Exchange. I used it for a while and it offers a lot more features than the built-in Exchange support in Eclair and Froyo.
If I could sync more than 1 month of email in Froyo and actually store it on the device, then I wouldn't need a 3rd party app for my setup.
i have heard Touchdown is a quality option.
so is it unrealistic to think that the HTC email apk can be ported to the N1 without rooting, roms, etc etc?

I also use Touchdown. It works very well with my company's exchange server. I had a small issue with Touchdown after the recent FRF85B upgrade. I notified Nitrodesk (touchdown) and they pushed out an update that corrected the problem later that same day (yesterday as a matter of fact). Can't ask for better support than that.
I also have used Touchdown in the past, it was a great app. I'm now using the stock Froyo exchange support, because i prefer the smaller 2 column google calendar widget over the huge touchdown widget.
When setting up my exchange settings in Froyo on the N1, i did notice that the autoconfigure did not work at all. I had to manually enter just about every username/domain/hostname while configuring it to get it to work.
MotoGAL and MotoCAl
The new Froyo email program works perfectly for me on Exchange server 2007 However my old standby - the Droid motogal and motocal applications fail completely.
This is especially irritating as there is no equivalent of motogal under froyo. i.e. it it allows me to search for email addresses from the GAL - but I can't look up phone numbers, post address, dept etc etc - which I also need.
Anyone know how to fix motogal for use under Froyo?
(The combined calender function in Froyo is quite cool - but I still need an exchange GAL browser app)
i wish the froyo email app worked with my company. maybe there is something different i dont know.
so lets say i work for a company called "BetterBuy"
in the HTC Sense email app all I need is:
server: sync.betterbuy.com
domain: NA
and then my login info, and its all good.
in the Froyo N1 email app its set up as follows:
domain\username:
server:
no matter what i put in it doesn not authenticate.
For domain\username, use: \yourusername
Works for me.
no go here. idealy i want the HTC sense email app since i know it works...last resort will be buying Touchdown.

Android Calendar without google ?

Hi,
is it possible to use the android calendar without a google account?
Can we mod it to use it without google? I mean mod source code and compile it new?
Could some one do it?
Can i install a google account on defy without internet?
Mod?
Tool?
Hack??
Big thanks for help!
Bye
I think you can, but I haven't tried having removed the stock Calendar app already. BTW, there are some alternative calendar programs that don't use the built-in database, such as Fliq.
You can always change the codes yourself, but from the way you raised the question I don't think you know how to do (and nor do I), and I doubt if anyone is interested in doing this. Of course, if you're willing to pay a reasonable bounty then it's another question...
Finally, an Internet connection is needed for setting up a Google account.
Maybe if you tell us what you actually want to do, then we can give some more useful suggestions.
Hi, thanks for answer.
I only know jorte, how has got his own database.
All other software usere the google account.
Id like to have a google free sync android, which i must not show every time, if it has synced with google server.
Please, can you tell me which devices have got a own calendar which not use the google calendar?
The google calendar looks realy nice.
Why no one want a google free and without sync calender?
Btw i cant mod the code.
Iam not a coder, only admin.
Can i activate the calendar without a google account?
so that i can use a second software how uses the calendera database?
Big thanks
You can activate a Google account without syncing your Calendar, Contacts and such with Google. They can be disabled in Settings.
If you want to go a bit further, just remove the respective *Sync.apk from /system/app (search for posts on how to remove system apps) provided that you've rooted your device.
This is all?
But is the system app *sync.apk only for google sync?
Or can i even sync with mypohone explorer any more?
Yes.
Yes.
Solution?
Hello,
I had the same problem and i found out that Jorte ( found on android market ) did do the thrick for me. It is pretty standalone. Notice that of you want notifications ( sounds etc ) in Jorte that you need to configure that in the original agenda of defy.
Hope this is your solution, regardings Rick
It IS possible
Hi,
I have CM7 installed, at first without GoogleApps. Then it is not possible to use the native calendar program. But, if flash gapps, bot NOT login or create a new account, the calendar app works fine, though.
LK
Hi, how have you installed CM7 on Defy?
I found out another trick on my SE LWW. After installing CM9.1 with GApps i replaced the Calendar.apk with native SemcCalendar.apf from official Firmware, but FC. After replacing google's Calendar.apk back i was able to use in normally.
Please ask all questions in the Q&A section. Thread moved there.

[Q] configure exchange email

hello
i have encountered the same pb on S3 and now also on the S4. I can not configure the exchange email app. only the mail. how can i do that because it seems to me already that samsung only says that you have exchange email but it doesnt work. wtf?!
Mail exchange works perfectly on Sgs3 and now on sgs4... I use it non stop. Ask your administrator of the mail exchange server settings. You do something wrong with the settings.

Wow .. now that activesync has expired on gmail I need to reinvent my mail syncing on my new s4.
The way I wanted to go about it is that I let gmail sync calendar and contacts and use the native mail client via imap.
Why not use gmail for mails too .. well because I need to set up my work activesync account too .. and I don't want two apps for mails.
First thing I notice is that when I set up imap access to gmail with the native application I get no push functionality (imap idle). The shortest sync frequency is 5 minutes. This is not good enough.
I am now thinking about using the eMail app from CM10.1 .. which served me well on my old device but I really don't want to loose any of these nifty Samsung features (which I may already have lost because I installed swiftkey from playstore .. don't know yet).
Anyone have some tips for me on how to proceed?

Google has stopped providing exchange mail for private and personal Gmail (starting February 2013), so you can use the build in Gmail account in your phone or to set IMAP.

That was for "additions," not legacy users. I'm still using GMail ActiveSync with my N2 and Note 10.1 Does anyone know if it's carried-over based on GMail account or only by individual device? For example, if I got a SGS4 would ActiveSync that's currently working on my N2 continue to work on other phones I swap after that?

Yep .. either switch to outlook.com, use a software that can do imap idle (K9Q i guess .. never really got into that) or do it like i do it right now .. live with the 5 minute delay in the standard email client and do the syncing for calendar, contacts etc. via gmail account.
At least this is my solution for today
Actually I'm using a hacked client from CM10.1 .. to not have to enter the PIN so often. The thing is that all Samsung stuff is lost .. like in-mail translations .. this is quite a pity .. I really hope for a security patched version soon. Oh .. to clarify .. the patch is not for my googlemails of course .. but for the other exchange account I have to set up.

Trying to install Email app instead of Gmail

I want to install the Android Email app (4.4) instead of Gmail on my Nougat Moto G5+, but the install doesn't allow me and tells me to use Gmail instead - even though I already disabled Gmail. Does anyone know of a workaround please?
Because that app isn't supported in newer OS versions and has been depreciated by Google. Use Nine, Bluemail, K-9, or some other email application.
I've tried all those and am using Bluemail now. Don't like it much but it's the only one I've found that supports Outlook push AND pop3. K9 is way too complicated. Email "just worked" like Apple of old!
