probably won't happen until you root the phone. It can be done with a sql edit.

OK so im not the only one. I was assuming it was a bug from doing the phone data transfer. I'm wondering if T-Mobile intentionally removed it to encourage people keeping their data on at all times. I usually buy my phones unlocked and it's been so long since I bought a phone from the provider. Now I'm getting smacked with the reminder of carrier bloatware and restrictions

You can't via wifi, you need a cell plan with data... sign-in skip was introduced with 2.1

that doesnt seem to work for me (though the picture has the exact same looking google screen) maybe im jsut doing it wrong is there a certain speed to do it?
If it is unlocked it should not ask about activation... the other option is go to you cell phone provider or friend to let u borrow the similar with data to activate... once activated u can turn the wifi and will not ask for data plan.

will i be able to activate it with any data plan or does it need to be t-mobile?
does anyone know? i dont want to get a month of data and not even be able to activate it
You can use any SIM card (as long as it is unlocked) if you set up the APN right.
thx everyone
did it work?

Do you use your Galaxy Tab with a SIM Card for Data information?

Guys,
I am seriously considering purchasing a Galaxy Tab to go with my Galaxy S.
My SGS already has a SIM card and as the Tab primarily won't be used outside of a Wifi area be that Home or Work and am unlikely to use the Tab as a Phone/SMS, I am wondering whether or not to bother purchasing a SIM Card to go with the Tab.
Percentage wise it should be something like 80% Wifi available.
Therefore, could you please let me know how you use your Tab and for those that don't use a SIM Card (be that for Data or Phone/SMS) do you find any restrictions?
Restrictions could be in the form of when the Tab is switched off (screen off only), as there is no SIM for any Data connection how do you find the Tab receives any internet updates.
When my SGS has it's screen switched off wifi is disabled and as such any data is sent through my SIM Card data plan. This keeps the phone updated be that email messages or App updates.
As such with no Data plan on the Tab how do you receive any email/App updates?

Go into Wireless and Networks, WiFi Settings, hit the Menu button, Advanced, WiFi Sleep Policy, and choose Never. There ya go, WiFi stays on when the device is asleep. This should be the default on all Android devices, but it's not.
WiFi uses far less battery than 3G, even if left on while sleeping, and of course it doesn't burn your data plan.

Thanks... Okay, that's got rid of that problem.
Anyone else have any opinions on whether or not to use the Tab with a SIM Card?
I can justify getting the Tab but I can't justify buying another SIM Card.... unless the advantages outweigh the costs.
Get a 10buck data only card and leave it plugged in. If you think you're going away for a bit, pay 10 bucks to re-enable it for that trip and be done!

Don't think they do a Data card for that price in the UK.
You can get a £10 SIM Card from the likes of T-Mobile but it's still £10 every month regardless of whether you use it or not.
Hey I don't have a galaxy tab used to have an alas before it bricked. Anyway there is no need to buy a simcard just Google advisable.apk. Its a mod that allows you to establish an ad-hoc connection to pull internet from a mobile or computers ad hoc connection

Not so.
There are plenty of PAYG deals doing around that allow you to do.
For example -
3.
T-Mobile do a £2 per day deal which is quite good.
My personal favourite would be GiffGaff if there was any kind of O2 signal where I live.
EDIT - actually, my new personal favourite would be TMo 6MONTHWEB for £20, which gives you 1GB a month for 6 months for only £20!
As far as I'm aware, all of these are effectively "pay as you play" options. If you don't need to use the internet from one month to the next, just don't use the SIM, and when you need to ensure you have enough credit to buy an add-on/goody bag whatever.

Dave

Hi Beards
FYI, T-mobile US no contract Tab comes with a SIM card unactivated.
Wifi works just fine in this configuration. It also works without SIM card however you get a message Emergency calls only.
Cheers
I have a sim for my tab. $20/month Bell Flex plan is cheap enoigh and I can cancel at any time and just tether with my desire. Wifi at home but HSPA everywhere else. Once the roms start coming out ill unlock amd just use my telus sim with a BT headset for calling. Using the bell sim allows me to text from my GT and I love that option.

I didn't put sim in my Tab at first, but now I got one and a tiny dataplan to go with it, since I mostly use wi-fi and work and home.

Really wifi uses less battery? So is there a way to fully disable 3g and use wifi only , thinking of just using a phone as a access point

Airplane mode and then WiFi back on works.
I believe you can use the XDA Superpower app.

Switch to GSM only which will leave the phone operational, or airplane mode with wifi on to completely switch off cellular radio.

Interesting comments.
I was not aware you could obtain a SIM card with Data for such a cheap price.
However, it's nothing really to do with the money, I'm fortunate to be able to afford an additional card without even thinking of any financial consequences. I am though more interested in hearing how you use the Tab and how you get around the problems.
Having said that I know what will happen; I'll get the Tab and then end up purchasing another SIM Card with all the trimmings for something like £15 to £20 a month just for ease of use.
this is wierd i have it set to never sleep wifi but it seems like everytime the screen is off the wifi does sleep, i am using the modified wpa_supplicant to connect to my ad_hoc...

Bell charges $649, but also requires you sign up for at least one months' service (minimum $20, but they bill for that), and there's the $35 service fee (which they may charge on the spot, or they may bill you for, or even waive).
Cancel the data plan as soon as you leave the store, you're still out $55+tax but have a month's service to show for it. Or keep it on for two months and get a $50 credit, which after taxes means you get those two months for free, and THEN cancel.
There are no other options, though you may be able to talk a Best Buy or Futureshop flunkie to sell you one outright with no activation, but that's very hit or miss.

NOUGAT Foxfi Killer

Hello I have sis the ota update to nougat without realizing I'd lose foxfi. I don't have any other need to root this phone So I am wondering if I can get advice on easiest way to get hotspot option like foxfi back. Can I roll it back to last update or what? Please help.

You can choose a third party option and flash back to the last marshmallow update, or you can use the hybrid rom with native tethering enabled.

Thank you for the quick reply. Can you recommend a 3rd party app to flashback? I haven't rooted and done that type of thing for several years and sadly I am behind the times in this area.
There is a trick to get tethering working on Nougat. It involves popping out the sim card just enough to get the phone in to airplane mode, then pop it back in. Within a second of that, you turn on tethering in the android settings. It takes a few tries to get the timing right, but you can get it to work without foxfi or any other app. I usually open the settings page to the tethering option, pop out the sim, push it back in, and then activate tethering. Most of the time it tells me that there is no sim card, so it can't tether. I clear that notification and immediately push the tethering button again and it works. The guys in the S7 edge forum came up with this.

Odin used to flash the update back using the full csc to wipe the phone. Or follow the instructions in the hybrid thread in the roms forum.

Is this something you have to do each time you want to tether, or just once and then it unlocks tethering?
*Very* frustrated that Verizon shut this down with Nougat.... I hardly use much data tethering, but when I need it as my backup, I need it to work. This is the kind of nonsense that makes Verizon less attractive as a carrier.

I believe this happened for most carriers and it has to be done after each reboot of the phone. Like the original said, it may not stick and requires to try again if it doesn't

It needs to be done every time you want to tether. Annoying, but because I don't tether much, something I am willing to do.

You have to do this each time. I also did the nougat upgrade without realizing I would lose foxfi and the trick mentioned above works great. It's kind of annoying having to pop the sim card but it honestly works. I keep the little metal pin between my phone and my case so it's always with me so I can enable tether.
Also this was not Verizon who took away tether this was nougat in general. Doesn't matter if you were on Sprint, Verizon, t mobile etc, nougat removed tether option via foxfi and other similar apps due to security risks that nougat fixed.

Any fix for no data while in a call??

I realized while in a call the mobile data is gone which might be normal perhaps because it can only handle one thing through the modem......
I'm not sure, but just wanted to know if its not normal then anyone found a fix?
Thanks
Depends on the carrier, which carrier do you have?

Sounds like you changed settings to LTE only to force VoLTE without carrier support. That would be the behavior to expect under such circumstances. Not saying you did btw.

Thanks but no, I'm not forcing lte as there's no Volte here.
If there was then the problem wouldn't exist as those calls would go through mobile data and in that case the data wouldn't be cut.
Again, from what I've read around it really has to do with modem not being able to support 2 things at the same time like call (regular) + mobile data.
I just wanted to confirm more people are having this and that this behavior is kind of expected and not a glitch. As generally I have WiFi on I had never realised this until yesterday that I had WiFi off and was on a very long call and realised I couldn't access the Web at all.
same here

Did you ever find anything out i'm experiencing the same thing?
In my experience (not with this device) if there is lte link when placing a call, the data would fallback on 3g network. If no lte, there will be no data at all

Anyway to Delete data saver?

If there is already a thread I apologise. But anyway....Does anyone know how to fully delete or remove the Data Saver Feature. I have issues where when roaming it automatically turns on and data fully dies out unless I keep manually shutting off. If there is a way to delete, would be much appreciated if anyone knows how to. Its mainly very annoying more than helpful as I have all set to still allow data and yet issues remain.
What model and ROM do u have? Atimes it might be u have to reflash the rom u are using. I once experienced sth like that. But mine was autosync coming up automatically even when i switched it off...

Ls997, classic rom. Will suck if so, got tons of work put into this rom, unless a dirty flash would be sufficient.

So you want data to work without restrictions while roaming (I'm assuming this means roaming on a network that's not your main carrier), but data saver keeps turning itself on? If so, then I'm assuming you already enabled data roaming and set all your apps to have unrestricted data access.

Yeah, that's why it's an issue. All apps are set to allow. I am oddly in alot of roaming areas is why an issue as well. Sprint don't have the greatest coverage.

I see. I'm on a Sprint MVNO which only gives me voice and texting in roaming areas, so I wouldn't be able to test this. Are there roaming data amount caps and speed limits for you? I wonder if any of those could trigger data saver or it's just some bug from Android Nougat that can't be fixed.
