I actually started using Android for the first time with ICS Elite ROM coming from a blackberry and didn't realise that some launchers do landscape mode.
As a result I've been using my i9000 locked in portrait mode to type and everything. The new ICS keyboard makes this feasible.
The thing is, I don't fancy doing a .zip unpack again even though Nandroid backup and Titanium backup is fairly easy. Is there a launcher to install that can do it or would I then find more apps that don't work so great in landscape? I don't like turning the screen all the time and also because if you lay on your side the auto turning is annoying, yet that's the only slick way to use both screen modes.
If I can find a launcher that can do it, it might be better to use landscape all the time.
Is there anyone else out there who uses exclusively portrait mode like I currently do?
"go launcher" has the option to either lock it in one position or turn with the sensor. some widgets get a bit distorted in landscape though
So my auto rotate is not working at all, apps that require landscape mode are fine and will rotate, but apps like youtube, any video viewing, or apps could run in landscape but are running in portrait because the autos rotate is not working. Can someone tell me what is up with my phone please? Thanks
Go to settings, display and make sure auto-rotate screen is ticked.

Ticking the box in Settings >> Display >> Auto screen rotate will allow apps like Google browser and CarHome Ultra to automatically run in landscape mode. You can use an app like Screen Orientation to pull down (like Power Toggles) and set the orientation, i.e., fixed as landscape or portrait ... but it does not set to automatic.
For the first time in years, I am running a stock Android smartphone, and am disappointed at how little Google seem to have picked from the developers who have either cooked some terrific ROMS (e.g., CM) and kernels, or developed apps like PowerTools.
How could Google release a smartphone with their OS where the Settings >> Display >> Auto screen orientation does not work?
The stock launcher doesn't support auto rotation it rotates in some apps not all, Try installing Apex Launcher its in the play store. Then go to behavior settings/screen orientation set it to 'auto rotate'
this is probably a dumb question but how do i get the screen to rotate 180 degrees in paranoid android 3.15 or 3.99. i know iv had it with this rom before. basically i want the screen to turn any way i pick it up in an app like maps. thanks
btw my screen isint rotating at all right now. i have apex launcher but cant find the setting either.
edit: i found auto rotate in apex launcher but it still doesn't register my phone turning even into landscape mode. let alone upside down

Stupid solution, but did you check if screen rotation is enabled in Settings> Display?
Hey,
Doing a Nexus car mod at the present time and having issues with apps that are only designed for portrait mode being stretch into landscape mode rendering them useless.
In this example the app is ingress.
Is there a way to rotate an app into landscape mode but still keep in its portrait size so there would be black boxes on the left and right of the app?
Thanks for your help
I have a Joying Intel Sofia JY-VL132N2 headunit with the detachable 10.1-inch screen.
I want to mount the screen in portrait mode Tesla style because I prefer using it that way.
However I have found no way yet to rotate the user interface.
I have tried several apps from the App Store (Ultimate Rotation Control, Set Rotation, Rotation) but none of these seem to work.
Is there another way to force the display to rotate?
BTW my headunit is on 5.1.1 and is rooted. I have also installed the full Settings.apk to I can set Accessibility Services.
I guess you have a big problem (or challenge).
Most of the apps on the Joying are designed for landscape only. They will not even display in portrait mode even if you get the Joying android to listen to you that you want the unit completely in portrait mode.
Try with a launcher like Nova Launcher.
Maybe this works.
Greetings

How do you know they don't work in portrait?
On my phone I can force any app in portrait mode with Ultimate Rotatipn Control but this does not work on the Joying.

I already use Nova Launcher but forcing it in Portrait also has no effect.

Because when you decompile the apps with apktool you can see that. Most graphic elements are only available in landscape mode.
You mention that your unit is rooted. If you know how to make your partition read-write, you could modify your build.prop in /system.
You will find the line "ro.sf.hwrotation=0".
Change that to "ro.sf.hwrotation=90" or "ro.sf.hwrotation=270". This will change the default screen orientation (theoretically).
Of course you need to reboot in between and I didn't try myself. I don't know either whether Joying blocked it in some hardcoded way.
Thanks, I will try that.
This actually works!
Most of the Joying are indeed not portrait compatible except DAB+.
And I somehow managed to crack the screen when figuring out how to mount it in portrait so this experiment is not a success. ?

What worked for you??
I'm happy to see this can be done, how hard was it though? I'd like to go a step further and run split screen...RealDash on the top half and Waze GPS on the bottom half. Any chance of this?

Thanks, I just opted to go much larger w/ split screen ability in the latest released JY-VOS01N4GS screen.
