Wifi Issues - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my 6P for 24 days. I noticed an issue a few days ago but tried to troubleshoot it on my own. The Wifi-Mac address, which is unique to the phone, changes every time I power down the phone. This prevents the use of an automatic sign into local hot spots/school or any network that asks you to enter your devices mac address. (if the mac address changes, it no longer matches what you provided to the network) I'd rather not send my NEW phone off for repair and Best Buy wouldn't exchange it for me since it's past 14 days from purchase.
Is this something simple in the settings? Or am I destined to send it back for warranty repair?

The MAC address should never change It's in the fotmat xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx Are you dure it is not the IP address that changes?

Positive. I know it sounds crazy. The first 6 characters remain constant. It's the last 6 that change upon every reboot.

Is this with stock ROM? Any 3rd party privacy apps? There is privacy software that will do this to prevent tracking your device.

Yes. Stock. No 3rd party privacy apps that I'm aware of.

Password Unlock?

I currently use my work exchange server to hold all my emails and contacts...but my sever requires that i have a password on my mogul.
Just wondering if anybody knows how to get around this and disable it? I hate having to type in a password every 15 minutes whenever i want to look at my phone...such a pain! I would much rather just have it whenever the phone starts...or maybe even like every 2 hours or so...not 15 minutes!!
Please helppppp!!!!
Thanks!
I'm attached to a Zimbra server for email/contacts. I just checked it's user options and did not see an option for that.
I do speculate that it's an option on the Exchange though. It's been a few years since I managed one. You'd probably be in good shape checking with your admin about this...
what I do

I have my password saved under the phones activesync settings.
He's talking about the hardware security policies pushed to the handset by Exchange Server.
Yes - there are ways to disable and alter the effective policies on your handsets. However, they are in place because you are accessing your company server and any sensitive information on your phone should be protected from loss. (for this reason, I always strongly dissuede people from using personal handsets for company/government/official business) As a piece of IT/Communications gear, those phones are subject to the same security requirements enforced across the entire organization.
If you must be the weak link in your company's security, you can find hints to open a vulnerability here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=43428

What exactly are you trying to circumvent? If your IT department has restrictions about connecting with non-approved devices then you should probably respect that.

unfortunately there seems to be a bug as the policy is rather relaxed but on my device I get a short lock out time with a complex password. This is way to much as the device locks every minute / after every call...
Changing the policy on server (except no restriction) did not help. As its working with a Nexus it seems to be a bug in the Tab.

[Q] Lock websites on Nexus 7

The training center I work for is piloting a bunch of mobile devices to distribute to users . The devices need to be able to access only a select number of websites and a few in house apps (a sad use for these wonderful devices). I have rooted one of our Nexus 7s and disabled most of the default apps. I then just password protected all of the apps that I must keep like Titanium backup, settings, etc. What I can't figure out is how to lock chrome so that it can only go to certain websites. Does anyone know how i could do this?

Android doesn't have parental settings like a computer with security software like kaspersky or McAfee. It also doesn't have such a software that prevents you from accessing sites you don't want it to be accessed. You can tell the IT department to set the privacy settings so when the sites are typed, it'll be blocked.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I'd address this by having them contact a specific access point that accessed a specific proxy (that they were configured to use) with the list of sites.
Squid isn't bad to configure.
drop the default route (ip route del default), add the desired DNS hostname translations to /etc/hosts -> /system/etc/hosts, and then add back in individual routes (ip route add) to the ip blocks named in /etc/hosts.
This would need to be repeated every time the DHCP lease renewed, as the renewal process will certainly re-insert the default gateway route, and the current IP might change.
A better solution would also compromise or replace DNS lookups with the same domain name whitelist, and every DNS lookup not in the whitelist would blackhole to the loopback (127.0.0.1) device.
You didn't say whether or not these devices are "in the wild" (either 3G or random WiFi hotspots). If the devices are captive (getting DHCP leases from a corporate/business access point) there are plenty of other tricks that can be played at the default gateway.
Note also that it is pretty typical for "web sites" to pull content from all over creation, or use load-balancing services (e.g. akamai) where the name-to-IP translation can't be readily predicted in advance,
Both of those factors might condemn you to be perpetually editing your hostname whitelist and routing table instructions.
good luck

[Q] Anyway to locate my stolen Note 2 via ip address?

Okay so the other day I had my note 2 stolen and now I need to find out where it is. The girl told me she had it and she made sure she turned it off so I couldn't track it. She told this to my face. I never saw her again and now I want to know of a way to track it's location from the moment it gets on the internet?
I tried Google Account activity but does that log the ip address of your phone as soon as it goes online but doesn't necessarily access gmail?
I have my Hotmail account on there as well anyway to get account activity of ip addresses that access hotmail?
What about going online with the Android device and get an ip activity log?
This was stolen on the 5th roughly and she is leaving the united states on the 10th. SO THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO GET IT DONE ASAP!
I already have the police working on it as well. I'll need to have the police check the cameras at the property to see what car she left in so we can find it logically that way or by tracking via ip address. Calling the ISP with Law Enforcement and getting the physical address to the ip address.
THANKS
Try downloading cerebus from the play store on the web. Although without activating it as a device admin, idk how successful you will be using it

That's kind of illegal when you spoof Mac adresses to gain access to restricted services you don't want to pay twice
I can watch it on my phone as long as I am not using it on android box.

Changing the layer 2 adress always effects the whole communication since you have a new one. Therefore any devices which communicate with the device needs to learn this new adress(happens automatically normally).
If you have some Mac adress security in devices like access points, soho routers etc. you need to change the Mac there too, otherwise you will be blocked.
But passwords not. If you do something wrong, you can mess up your phone.
Thanks
Just want to make sure that my home network WiFi will still connect automatically or do I need to login WiFi password again
Just be careful, because you can have major issues if your android box and phone are on the same network. The router/switch will potentially route packets to the wrong device, making network access slow and/or unstable.
