Help Pleaseeeee! - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Right i used to flash custom roms on my phone all the time but haven't done it in a while i've kept it as stock....Last night i flashed a stock rom to my phone and lost the use of my menu and back soft keys? Now i haven't got a clue what to do i did read through a thread but that's just confued me even more...
I tried to flash a touch recovery on my phone but i don't think i can do that as i haven't rooted my phone yet? (is that correct)
Model Number: GT-i9505
And Ver:5.0.1
BB [email protected] I9505XXUHOJ2
Build Num: LRX22X.I9505XXUHOJ2
Any help is greatly appreciated

Recovery and root are different things. They can work independent of each other.
And rooting the phone is just as simple as flashing the recovery. Both processes are done via Odin.
You will be looking at TWRP recovery if you are to flash one. Odin install instructions can be found on their site.
As far as your keys go, I don't know what to suggest, other than flashing a different rom. Official roms shouldn't even cause such problems.

Thanks for the reply, I don't know what has happened but there is a thread full of it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/help/problems-official-update-signal-soft-t3250132

It definitely appears to be an error on Samsung's part. Or something went bad during the installation.
So basically the keys have the wrong "drivers" installed, or they were corrupted somehow.
The solution would be to try and update them using the menu posted in your reference thread.
Or try flashing a newer version stock rom, hopefully also updating the key firmware and fixing your problem.

You can install firmware from other countries if your phone is not carrier locked.
Or check for OTAs, I know there have been other updates since then. For instance, my baseband is UHOJ4, which is newer than yours.
If you can't force update the key firmware then you have two other options:
1) Send it to Samsung, as it is their fault.
2) Root it and use on-screen navigation keys. The problem with this option is the risk of screen burns, due to the long-term static image (the navbar) display.

[Guide and Info] Reset "Custom" System status back to "Official"

As many of you have found out , sometimes after flashing roms or part of roms into the device turns the Device firmware to “Custom”.
What does this mean:
It means you no longer will be able to receive updated from samsung via kies or OTA, you want be able to deal with drm content etc.
When the device reboots its checks for custom binaries, unsigned partitions, custom partitions, mismatching partitions versions etc.
Why does this happens?
There is 4 possible reasons i'm aware of ...
1- You flashed a custom part of the rom, such as: Custom kernel, bad param.tar, custom boot.img, Custom recovery.
2- You flashed a custom rom that was improperly built.
3- Mismatched device country code after flashing a rom that was not builded for you region or carrier.
4 - Deleting or modifying system apps.
Today we will be dealing with 2 and 3..
( if your device has A custom Binary count of more that 0, this will not work for you)
Fix for option 2:
1- Reflash your device with the latest rom from your region/carrier.
But,but, i flashed the original rom and it still says custom?!
If your region/carrier only has lets say a 4.1.1 version of the rom and you already flashed a 4.1.2 .from another region this may wont work.
Why?
Because flashing an older rom does not downgrade all the firmware as expected in some cases, it seems that the device is able to detect newer and i some cases modified parts in the currently loaded firmware and skip the update.
What can i do then?
Wait for an update for you region.
Fix for option 3
Roms are supplied with settings for different regions/carriers often called CSC codes or Sales-code.
When you flash a full rom it also flashes a partition that contains those codes ,once the rom boots for the first time it checks your current Sales-code already set in the device and if the sales-code matches, it copies the appropriate files to the device, if it does not match, it sets the device sales code to “unknown” and therefore setting the device firmware to “Custom”
Another reason that problem 3 is caused by:
My device for instance is from the UK, retail model, the sales code is BTU, the roms for it contains pretty much all the sales codes for all Europe, so its safe to flash in any other European device that have different sales-code.
The problem arises when people starts flashing roms that were made for a specific set of carriers, like for instances the new DBT roms, this roms only contains support for 6 sales codes,so if you are out of germany and flashed this rom chances are that your sales-code ain't there, therefore not matching your current sales code and
setting the firmware to “custom”.
How do i fix this then?
First you need to find your sales code
find it here if you don't know it; http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I8190
then you need a rooted rom from your carrier or a rom that contains most of the sales-codes
Install Samsung Galaxy S /S2 /S3 CSC , app from the market/
Launch the app and tick the “Try with root mode” box
Grant superuser Permission,
WARNING! THE NEXT STEP WILL RESET YOUR DEVICE TO FACTORY DEFAULT AND DELETE THE CONTENTS OF THE INTERNAL SD CARD.
In the list of codes that came up, select yours and press install.
Device will reboot and wipe your data.
And thats it your device Sale-code is fixed.
Notes
New additions and corrections to the above are welcome.
This is not a thread about resetting your binary count.
I will not answer question about building roms.
I will not answer pms about any of the above,Unless you have some meaningful contribution.
Tutorials take time to write and research so don't be an ass and if this helped you in any way at least press the thanks button.
Thank you and good luck.
PS. I have holes in my socks
Thanks Faria :good:
but Will not work for me .....

I've done the followingsteps :
First - Change CSC to DBT
Second - Factory Reset
Third - Flashing stock firmware from 4.1.2 Samfirmware DBT with Odin
what I do wrong?
Or there is an accident on my old recovery.img? But i have flash stock recovery.img from forum post

Yes your recovery still custom, so it wont change the status, official roms do not overwrite custom recoverys, param.lfs, it seems.
None of the recoverys in the forum are signed, they may be official but they are not signed, the primary fuction of this recoverys is to revive your device or fix broken recoverys but all will be flaged as custom because they are not signed by samsung.
My phone does not have root. How can I do?

not able to Change CSC to DBT ... can you tell me how ... DBT never available
Hi! I'm new in the customization field of my S3 mini, haha hearing the news that the kitkat update will not be released for the international version. I'm wondering, what are the important things that I should know about the phone? I have been seeing threads and the "firmwares, kernels,CSC's" are all new to me, haha can you explain those? or are there any threads available for their descriptions? :fingers-crossed:

I've spoken to them a couple of times, both their Facebook page and their customer service indicated their won't be a move up to Marshmallow, very doubtful over a move to 5.1 even. Any more updates will be focussed with optimising the existing software, adding slight features for the EPD etc.
Sad but they are a small company, seems they can only focus on 1 model and a time.

New Update .
Still Lollipop 5.0, but brings some useful improvements and enhancements. I'll take it.
I hope, with the release of the Yota 3 and 2c, that the price of the YD201 falls down. They can't update neither Yota 1 and 2. I still got the first one, but just because I live in Brazil and got from a nice guy that agreed to sell and send his Yotaphone 1 to me from India.
Anyone inclined to sell your Yota2 please talk to me.

It's for the RU (russian) firmware, if you check the other threads there are methods to flash the previous version. I have been using it for a few iterations now, the new one worked as an OTA, even with TWRP (they added something to reflash the stock recovery, Yota noticing the significant root community using this phone in Russia at least).

Thanks for the info!
I only believe it when it is real, but according to info from tech support, also the EU firmware will get an update this month...
BTW, lollipop isn't too bad, I switched back from marshmallow on my nexus 7 - too much battery drain. if Google could get it right the first time, you wouldn't need monthly bug fixes. not saying that an update for the yota isn't overdue...
Is just me that can't update? I have no OTA and flashing manually gives me "no MD5 file found" error

Yes, thanks
Sorry what you mean with firmware and software version? Phone was running Kitkat 4.4.2 or 3 (now is bricked).
I cannot skip the checksum, no such option in my TWRP (2.8.5). There are others option about checksum on backup but no skipping during install.
I am rooted (and bootloader is unlocked) but I cannot install the RU version. Here I don't understand why you ask me if I am rooted: I can install from recovery or TWRP without root
I downloaded all RU versions and the last EU version from the ftp and I got the MD5 error with all, both Lollipop and KitKat.
Then I tried with Yota Flasher utility: I saw that for flash ROM it was seeking for "firmware" path, so I created "firmware" path and put there the ROM.
I started to flash and it took only some seconds... I understood immediately phone has gone bricked.. and so it is...
Then I tried to download the firmware through Yota Flasher: it arrived to 100% and got stuck in there...
I'm trying to redownload it and hope to flash the system, phone is here in downloading mode waiting...
Provide you my flash method, manually. Use the fastboot.exe in cmd, and type command line below
****************************************************************************
fastboot.exe flash aboot firmeare/emmc_appsboot.mbn
fastboot.exe flash boot firmware/boot.img
fastboot.exe flash -S 512M system firmware/system.img
fastboot.exe flash recovery firmware/recovery.img
fastboot.exe flash cache firmware/cache.img
fastboot.exe flash modem firmware/radio/NON-HLOS.bin (flash the radio)
fastboot.exe flash sbl1 firmeare/radio/sbl1.mbn
fastboot.exe flash rpm firmware/radio/rpm.mbn
fastboot.exe flash aboot firmware/emmc_appsboot.mbn (flash again, just do it.)
fastboot.exe flash userdata firmware/userdata.img (notice this is for the user data, including app data and SD)
fastboot.exe reboot (reboot and wait, about 20 min stuck on logo, it's ok.)
Thank you xingshi.
I'll try.
How long does the entire process take?

UPDATE
Via Yota Flasher I download succesfully the 4.4.3 and flashed the phone. Now it's back
I tried to download again the 5.0 EU but no way: arrives at 100% and stops. If I check file's dimension I see it is a couple of kbytes below the size of the other package I downloaded from web browser and in fact it's impossibile to open the zip.
I'll try to download other version of Lollipop through the Yota Flasher.

NEW UPDATE
I have 5.0!
After flashing and old version of 4.4.3 (my phone went with a 4.4.something branded Vodafone Italy, and they evidently don't give a fork about updates). With the 4.4.3 rev 1.0.51a I immediately received he update to 1.0.56a: I downloaded the 114MB, rebooted, and then got the update to 1.0.61a, around 63MB. I rebooted and then got finally the update to 5.0, 1GB
I have only one problem now: the device doesn't recognize when I'm looking at the ink screen, and power button powers on the amoled... Even unlocking through swiping from bottom to top doesn't work. Option is correctly set, I tried to uncheck, reboot, wipe cache and check the option again but it not working well yet. I open a thread for this...

Same here , have just bought the YOTA 2 too, Vod branded. I wanted to upgrade to to EU 1.60 (rom which seems to be pretty stable): Can I ask you if you have the 1.60 actually or the 1.9x (Russian one)?.
The bug you describe seems to be a real pain, do not want to risk.
Will appreciate any help.

You can make a NAND backup and then flash the newest firmware, trying maybe the 1.99 RU. Even if you flash the 1.60 EU, is not sure that you'll have my same problem, there's people who flashed without issues...

Boot loader being locked means that custom images will be blocked and thus cannot be flashed. Original images, such as those from Samsung, will be flash able. No ADB connection would be required in the restoring process as we will be using the Download Mode function on your device.
I was just downloading the system image for your phone model and found that the region CHM (China) has only Android 5.1.1 while the region TGY (Hong Kong) has Android 6.0.1 already. In addition, the China firmware has got tons of chinese applications while the Hong Kong firmware does not (only has Samsung stock applications). Do you remember what firmware your phone had? I can then download the appropriate image and/or help you to upgrade (data might be lost).

Really i don't remember... But it came with a bunch of programs installed on the firmware and others that were trying to install themselves, such as AliExpress or RAM Cleaner. It was probably the Chinese firmware by the amount of advertising and bloatwares present. I had no apps from any phone carrier in my country, just bloatwares and lots of advertisement. That's why I cleaned up the applications and ended up deleting SystemUI.apk, thinking it was some kind of bloatware. You can send me the link of the chinese firmware and the HK too?
And... Could you search for me how to make my mobile phone model go into download mode? I searched around a lot, but found no way. All of them were for the normal Galaxy J7 and opened a blue screen with an exclamation, doing the way they taught my enter Factory Mode, for tests on sensors and more...

Is your native language Chinese? Anyways to enter download mode, with your phone fully turned off, press the Volume Down, Home, and Power button until a blue warning screen appears. Then, press the Volume Up button once. To get out of download mode (or to force shut down your device), hold the Volume Down and Power button until the screen turns off. The phone should automatically restart and boot into the system after that.
I assume you know how to use Odin? If you are unsure, I'd suggest not messing around with the system images and use Smart Switch emergency firmware recovery instead. Otherwise, I could provide you detailed steps on how to use Odin.

Upon prior research I found that most of them are having this problem due to having purchased a fake device (not original; an imitation). These devices have an MTK chip and does not have the Download Mode. Did you buy this set from an official retailer or at least a reputable site? If so I'd suggest that you return this set immediately.
Ads popping out of nowhere and random applications trying to install is already a call for suspicion. I have a J5 2016 at hand and have tried both region's firmware with no such problem occurring. Since this can be identified as a fake device, installing the official Samsung image would "brick" the device as the hardware configuration is marginally different.
Please check your PM.

That's the problem right there. His device is not original from Samsung but is an imitation instead. Doing a skim through various threads here about imitation Samsung phones suggests that the hardware configuration is different like having an MTK processor instead of a Qualcomm Snapdragon/Exynos. Flashing the factory firmware would only brick his device, but wouldn't be possible due to the lack of download mode.

Wait... can I check with you whether you have recovery? Is it TWRP? Could you take a picture of it and post it here? If it's the stock recovery then we would have no way of flashing. Doubt TWRP is made for your device as well too.

Is there any way to install TWRP?

Help with bricked s5 SM-g900r7

I have galaxy s5 stuck in download screen. I have been through several "tutorials " on fixing, with no luck. I'm having a hard time finding original firmware for this model. Any help would be appreciated, I have a pic of the screen with info on it, but couldn't figure out how to post here.
Flash the original firmware?

Here you can download the latest firmware update for that model:
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s5/SM-G900R7/ACG/download/G900R7WWU3CPL1/120072/
Seems like the SM-G900R7 is a carrier specific device only. I have no experience with those. But I suspect they flash with odin just like the other models.
Did a bit of searching cause I was interested. If you (by chance) want root, there is an auto-root created by chainfire.
There is also a current official lineageOS build (LOS 14.1 = Android N) for that variant by haggertk (was merged into klte build months ago).
So looking good for you I'd say if you get it running.
I've tried what I think is flashing the original firmware. Tried a different autoroot and nothing. I think I'm doing things right, but always manage to have some kind of small issue, e.g. Connecting phone to Odin, or flash not taking. If another process for flashing original firmware is out there that doesn't use Odin, it may work. Thanks for the responses.

So what's the problem exactly? We need more info on what you want to accomplish and what you did (step by step) and what result you got.
Does Odin pick up your device? What file you tried to install (Link please!). What Odin log messages do you get? etc. etc.
Be as specific as possible. And go step by step! Try getting stock firmware to run first... no root, no custom recovery, no nothing.
Remove the battery for about a minute, boot directly to download mode via 3-button-combo, then try connecting to ODIN.

Samsung Galaxy 8 rooting problem

Hi Forum users
have a problem in attempting to ROOT my phone
SAMSUNG GALAXY S8
been a novice user made a mistake
hopping I can still win.
will give very brief Description for the moment hoping to get some help
Basically phone booted into Standard ROM b4 I had finished (last step applying ROOT)
I now get an Error that boots and reboots) the error is
"Only official released binaries are allowed to be flashed"
can still get into Download screen, but cannot get to recovery (TWRP)
Oden can still connect to download screen.
I think what I need to do is a Factory reset again, and hopefully get back into RECOVERY
any suggestions or help would be gratefully received
thanks
PS
happy to give full description if needed

You will need to flash firmware via odin.
You can download firmware with updato.com or sammobile.com
Thanks for reply

SO I can access Oden in download mode

Just had a browse of those sites seem to be mainly Northern hemisphere

1. Flashing firmware will delete twrp.
2. Being from Australia myself all firmware are on the website. You will have to filter out for Australian firmware.
3. Do you know what firmware you are on.
Ranx

Flashing stock rom will restore you phone to it's original state. So you will have to install twrp and root again.
For information about firmware and Odin maybe this may be of some help.

If you are not sure about your firmware install the latest version.
On the website they will also have dates of when the firmwares are released.
You can use also samfirm or frija ( PC applications ) to download latest firmware.
OK will follow that info
and do the Firmware update
As I don't know the firmware number, will have to try the latest version
will do a bit more reading when I have a some time and give it a go
thanks for the links.
Will let you know how it turns out
THANKS
Few more Questions
OK done some reading
filtered out some relevent Files, (I hope)
one file took 16 hours to download (they where feeding it at 50kbs).
So have two files which where listed as XSA carrier,
others where Telstra and Optus.
As I am not aware of XSA carrier was hopping that it was some sort of generic carrier firmware
Is that correct ??
One is version 8
the other is version 9
So should I go with the version 9 ?
Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure I get it right
THANKS

XSA is unbranded firmware ( it's what I have installed on my phone).
If you are locked into a carrier flashing other firmware will not unlock you from that carrier.
Not knowing what firmware you had before and because of download speeds you may have to use version 9 ( PIE ) firmware.
To check software version no. ( bootloader ) you can check in download mode. It should have a line saying AP SWREV: B : * - the star is your bootloader version. So you will have to use this version or higher when flashing firmware.
Make sure of your model number when searching for firmware. S8 = SM-G950f
Im having a similar problem, had to install stock july patch im using latest odin version then, i install recovery but when the phone reboots there is no recovery, tried to downgrade to february patch but odin dont allow it

Are you talking about stock or custom recovery and what is the issues you are having with it.
Depending on you bootloader version number you can not down grade firmware.
I tried to install stock recovery, the problem is: odin installs sucessfully recovery but when i try to go to recovery is not installed

Glad you got it sort out.
Not sure about the signing in. I use mobile app which is logged it to my Google account. I do have some issues with the PC ( without logging into Google ) but don't use it much. All I can suggest is to try a search on XDA or ask the moderators for assistance
Retry installing Recovery
