Will the latest OTA update to Verizon S5 break FoxFi for unlimited data users? (K0T49H.G900VVRU1ANE9)
Obviously I'm talking about using FoxFi for free wifi hotspotting.
Thanks!

You`ll get more feedback if you post this question in the S5 Verizon thread i guess
Yes no longer works for me.... USB does work but get constant disconects
I have a Verizon with a grandfathered unlimited data plan. I used to use it a lot with my Samsung Galaxy S3 but a forced update broke this functionality. I would like to upgrade phones and want to know if the Moto X Style/Pure can do subscription-less wireless hotspots? If so, how?
I will venture a guess and say that FoxFi won't work on this. From my small amount of research so far, it sounds like FoxFi doesn't work on Motos. Poeple have also seemed to have bad luck with other app store tethering apps on the Motos. With that said, this being "unlocked," I don't know if the native tethering settings will work.
Either way, I'm assuming if this has an unlocked bootloader and we can root... I'm sure there will be a way around.

Thank you for answering my question. Do you know if it makes a difference if I purchase a Moto X Style vs a Pure?
My assumption is that the Style will be locked by Verizon while the Pure should not be locked? If it is the same thing, I will buy a style since I can get that subsidized with a 2 year plan if this is not the case I will purchase a Pure from a third party.
I have used foxfi in the past with moto phones. I have not needed it since loosing my unlimited data. Those phones were on pre 5.0 android. I have not kept up to see if they have updated it to work on 5.0 and later.

On the droid turbo, nothing worked.
However as long as we get root, which I think will happen. They can modify the apk not to check for hotspot provisions.

Since this is an unlocked phone, wouldn't it work just like how Nexus devices work? I assumed that since you wouldn't have any of Verizon's software it wouldn't do the tethering check.

Yes - Its just like the Nexus (baked in with no service Check) - Tested using ATT.

My next phone.
Heck, I don't even need to root if that's the case.
Me too! If I can tether out of the box, I won't need to root either, though I'll probably unlock the bootloader on day 1, since that wipes the device.
I read elsewhere that it is advisable to do the initial setup over wifi, with no sim, to prevent the device from downloading and VZW software that may prompt the device to check for subscription before starting hotspot.
I know it isn't that hard to watch a tutorial and root, but with OTA's popping up, it would be nice if I didn't need to root.
According to @spotmark in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...o-x-2015-pure-edition-waiting-t3192510/page51 it's confirmed working on Verizon with Unlimited Data, no tethering subscription!!
If you're unlocked and rooted, you don't need Foxfi or any other third party app. Native Hotspot works fine
(I'm on Verizon)

Not true. I'm with Straight Talk (AT&T) and it wouldn't let me tether. There is a provisioning check. I had to root to get tethering.
Straight Talk is not ATT. It uses other carriers networks to provide service. That's not the same as having serivce directly from ATT. I have Verizon and ATT, tethering worked on both without root.
I'm on Sprint 10+ years and I root and enable native tethering on all of my phones since the Evo.Sprint has never said a word.I average 20-30 GB of data a month .
sprint limits hotspot data
Hi, have a quick question. I am on a simply everything plan at sprint for 70 bucks a month. But they check if I use the unlimited data with my hotspot. If I tether they limit the data to 3 GB a month and charge if I get over that. Is there a way to get around that?

Nope, can't do that... It's stealing...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64741769&postcount=4
Since it looks like there will not be any root, I was wondering if there is away to tether if you have old unlimited data plan? Thanks!

FoxFi works for me. I did also buy the FoxFi Key when I saw that FoxFi worked.
I do not own an s7 yet, but has anyone got tethering to work with the new root exploit?

Confirmed working, there is a flashable zip or you can use xtouchwiz
So I'm thinking of getting the Verizon HTC 10. Can anyone confirm if SunShine can s-off the current firmware verzion that the HTC 10 is shipped with? Perhaps if they have time to comment, maybe @jcase or @beaups could chime in? Thanks!

Thanks! That's all I needed to hear. With being on a grandfathered unlimited data plan and living in an area where the only other option for a high speed ISP is satellite service, I need to be rooted to use wifi tethering for my primary ISP.

FWIW, some phones no longer check your plan before allowing tether. I'm not certain if this applies to the 10, but my mom just got a Moto G4 Plus and while I was setting it up I decided to check just for fun and it allowed her to do hotspot and the like. Also on unlimited data from Verizon btw.
Native Tethering

Many of the rooted ROMs have tethering already activated. If you self-root stock and stay that way, there's a text edit you need to make to get tethering to work perfectly without a third-party app.
See the link here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-10/help/vzw-hotspot-setupunlocked-htc10-version-t3380588
I used to use third-part app WiFi Tether, but the native tether is much faster to load and unload.
FYI, I'm using the unlocked 10 converted to Verizon via the XDA guide and am loving it. I have all the Verizon features and no issues whatsoever ... and didn't have to send off my phone to get it s-off or rooted.

Thanks for that. I had looked at a thread that was a little less detailed, and only mentioned editing one line in default.xml. I'll probably put together a flashable zip like I did for my Moto Droid Turbo.
I have the t-mobile one unlimited plan that is limited to 10gb tethering. Does anyone know how to hide it so that I can bypass that limit without being throttled? I am rooted btw.
Thanks!
I use FoxFi on my phone with PDANet on my PC. PDAnet masks the tethering data as regular data.
