NOTE... I REPLACED THE ORIGINAL HOSTS FILE, DUE TO A FILE MIX UP, THAT IS EXPLAINED IN THE 3RD POST.
In my quest to remove a major amount of unnecessary bandwidth hogging and site tracking, I created a special hosts file that is compatible to most all streaming apps and some games.
Works with FSGO, HBO GO, XFINITY GO, My Canal, Fx NOW, ESPN, NBC, sho, max, you tube, fox sports, Amazon, hulu, starz, netflix, All4, tvplayer, iplayer, svt, tunein, pandora, tv time, tv show favs, milk music, slacker, white noise, ebay, text fee, skype, outlook, twitter, gmail, yahoo, samsung and google apps, and more...
Makes internet browsing quicker, minus some ad mark ups in websites. Does not bresk email host sites and vpn sites.
Oh, don't forget to remove the extension, and set permissioms to root with 644, or just copy and paste into your existing hosts file.
Enjoy!

Not sure if any peeps are finding issues... though I can isolste and edit my custom hosts file for a limited time.
For some peeps, tasker can be used to run scripts to enable or disable this hosts file or if tasker is too much of a resource hog, one can manually enable it within the ect folder before internet activity, as all hosts files are immediately set when changed.
Hosts files are faster and better than no-ad apps, just that they need savy internet tools to sniff traffic, for isolation of troublesone hosts to block every so often.
Believe it or not many apps that dont require internet to operate send dsta when connected to the internet. Even paid ones, as they still have hidden marketing built in from the free app thst was unlocked or being the base program in the paid for build.
Sorry, here is a fixed hosts file.
Didn't realize I handed out my personal version that removes some google plus stuff, and effects peeps with newer Hulu + versions.
This has been tested and verified to allow Google plus, apps requesting google plus login and hulu plus.

Is there a way to use the cloud drive as a real cloud drive (i.e. dropbox)? It's cool that it sync's docs, music, and apps automatically, but what if I want to put some stuff in there from my PC and have it available on my kindle fire to download (or not) when i wanted to?
Anyone got any ideas or alternate apps?
Sugarsync works great and was just released on the kindle. I like it better than dropbox. Holds a reasonable bandwidth so I can actually play video files as I download them. 5GB free. Reasonable rates for more space.

To upload files directly into Cloud Drive from your computer:
Goto https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive#path=/ on your computer and log into your amazon account.
1.Click on the "Upload Files" button on the top left corner of the page.
2.Click on "Your Cloud Drive" to select a destination folder for your files. If you do not select a folder at this time, your files will be uploaded into the "Your Cloud Drive" root folder. You will be able to move or copy your files into a different folder once your upload is complete.
3.Next, click on "Select files to upload." Select one or more files from your computer to upload.
4.Confirm your selection to begin uploading your files. You can now access your files from any computer or Kindle Fire. You can also use Cloud MP3 player to play music from your cloud dive music folder on your computer.
I know that it's possible to access my music, apps and books on the cloud on my kindle fire.
BUt if i have photos, personal docs, etc on my cloud drive, there isnt a cloud option on "docs" on Kindle Fire and there is no way to access them on fire. You can view all the files by silk browser but you cant download them i think.
I think amazon screwed really bad on that.
If you go to the Amazon Cloud Drive location via Silk Browser you can download the document you placed on the Cloud Drive. You'll need to tap the name of the document to initiate the download to the Kindle. Selecting the checkbox for your doc and clicking the download button will not work. You'll need to tap the name of the doc. The file will appear in your Downloads folder. I was able to upload a Word doc via my PC and download that file via Silk Browser to my Fire. Unfortunately Quick Word was unable to open the file, but I was able to open the document using 'Documents To Go'.

does it matter what file type to do streaming with sugarsync? Should I keep movies under a certain size?
I got sample from a movie to work for streaming, but the whole movie wouldn't work. The file size was like 1.25 or 1.5 gig though.
Makes me wonder why Amazon Cloud Drive doesnt have an app...

I've had no problem streaming 600kbps video from sugarsync. Guessing the file you were streaming was a bit more than that.
I can't say enough good things about sugarsync. I can simply drop files in a synced folder on any PC and access it from any other PC or mobile device. I can also upload files from one mobile device and access from another (use this all the time to move apk files from my phone to my Fire).
Interface look could use some work, but its as easy as it gets.

I think amazon's idea was to implement cloud drive on kindle fire features.
You can listen music from your cloud drive on music section on kindle, you can watch videos and apps on cloud too, i think they failed on documents, cause there is NO cloud option...
if there is an cloud option on docs section on kindle fire, you can access all your files on your cloud drive, but using that sections - music, videos, docs, apps.

Actually, The only Amazon cloud feature that makes sense is audio. You have an interface for playing any uploaded audio (or Amazon purchased audio) from their interface as well as the ability to move files back and forth from the cloud.
With video, images and other files and docs, there is no intelligent way to interface with these files.you can't play an uploaded video from the cloud, you can't view an image directly from the cloud, and you can't manage other files directly from the cloud. Files have to be downloaded before you can do anything with them. And cloud videos are not accessible from the video page, and cloud images are not accessible from the gallery.
I'm actually using mp3s in Amazons cloud, videos in sugarsync, and images in Flickr. Additional docs are managed in sugarsync. Would rather have one, but this setup actually gives me accessible, playable and manageable files for all.
Can't you do all those things with Dropbox? There's no defacto reason they couldn't set it up that way.
What's the rule or offer with uploading your own music to Amazon?

Not only audio, but also apps and books are working good with the cloud. You can read and use books and apps from the cloud and download to device.
Only videos and docs (images, documents, etc) are not streaming from the cloud, neither accessible with that 2 options CLOUD/DEVICE that the others have.
I'm using picasa for photos and sugarsync for videos too.
Google Play - New market. music, video
1. Here's the scoop.
In a nutshell, Google Music, Google eBookstore, and the Android Market were combined to form Google Play. Not only will you purchase music, movies, books, and apps at play.google.com, but those items will also be stored in the cloud. You'll be able to do the same thing on your Android phone or tablet using the various Google Play apps (more on that later).
The two destinations--Web and mobile--stay synced. So, when you purchase an app, movie, song, or book on the Play Web site, that content will become immediately available on your Android phone (and/or tablet). Likewise, if you rent a movie on your Android tablet, it becomes available for viewing on your desktop, too.
Because it's cloud-based, those purchases won't eat up storage on your computer, tablet, or phone.
It's like iTunes-meets-iCloud for the Android folk.
2. It's already available online, on its way to your Android.
The Play Store is already live at play.google.com. You'll see that it's a one-stop shop for all of the aforementioned services. In fact, if you try to go to the Android Store, you'll be redirected to the Play Store.
On your Android device, you'll get four app updates within the next few days:
The Android Market will become "Play Store."
Google Music will become "Play Music."
Google Movies will become "Play Movies."
eBookstore will become "Play Books."
If you don't want to wait for Google to push the updates to you, you can install them manually right away.
3. Can I upload my own movies and music?
Google Music, which allows you to store up to 20,000 songs, will remain the same. The only thing that will change is its name, Play Music. Any music you already purchased or uploaded is still available, and you can continue uploading your jams at music.google.com, or on the rebranded Android app, Play Music.
Movies are a different story. Right now, Google does not allow you to upload your own movies for access in the cloud. Its Play Movies app solely functions as a movie rental service.
4. Even non-Android users can use Google Play.
Let's be clear: even though Play is heavily marketed to Android users, any Google user can use the service to take advantage of cloud-based content management. So, you can rent a movie, upload and purchase music, and buy books on one computer, and access it all on any other desktop.
Mum's the word on native iOS support, but stay tuned for any updates.
When you rent a movie on Play Movies, it immediately becomes available on any device.
(Credit: Google)
5. Will Google Play's cloud-based nature kill my data plan?
Probably not. Even though all your content is stored in the cloud, any of it is available for offline playback. That includes books, music, and rented movies. Of course, the amount of content you can store offline, or "cache," will be limited to your device's storage capacity.
Tip: To do less harm to your data plan, connect to Wi-Fi before downloading content for offline viewing or playback.
Bonus: Expect heavy Google+ integration.
Continuing its streak of heavily promoting its social network, expect Google+ integration to be everywhere. As Google explains, "You can easily share posts about your favorite books, music, movies, games, or apps to your Circles on Google+, e-mail, or text message in a single click."
This integration, which has been available on Google Music for a while, will be useful for Google+ users, but others might find it annoying.

you mentioned in another post that "may be music, book, video update won't available in india, but you can update manually" so after updating manually are you able to use all the services?
No. These services may not be offered in India, so once you update manually, you still wont have access to these services, nor will it be visible to view these sections. Unless your account is US (region which offers these services) based.
Market Enabler may work, not sure.
Sorry for perhaps noobing, dr. ketan!
Do you know if I´m able to install the play market on RocketRom V22 (without incompatibility issues due to DPI changes)?

Thanks for these, they installed perfectly last month when all other downloads failed!
However, there's a new version of Books now (2.4.3), and I'm getting the "parsing error" again with every apk I've downloaded. Does anyone happen to have an apk like the one above that might work for me?
Thanks in advance.
Does anyone know of a good app that allows you to stream your media off your PC so I can watch my tv shows and movies, listen to music on my Nexus 7? 4.5 gb is left after installing apps and that's hardly anything for media.
Ideally if there was an app to file explore into my network so i can access documents, PDF files, ebooks, pictures, etc. that would be even better so i can just sit on my bed and read ebooks over wifi or watch stuff.
For ebooks your best bet is to setup calibre on your desktop, import PDF files and ebooks into that and turn on calibre's web-server. You can then browse your library on the Nexus using any program that supports OPDS catalogs, like FBReader, Mantano, etc. You will have to download the book you're actually reading to the device, but can delete it when done with it.
For video here's a list of applications that are worth trying, or search on the Play store for DLNA, there are several other DLNA browers available.

CIFsmanger (requires root) will allow you to map to shared network drives on your PC so you can access anything you share.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ws.plattner.cifsmanager&feature=search_result#?t=W10.
Tversity will share folders which contain video, mp3s, and pictures and you can use BubbleUPNP to view it on your Nexus 7. I actually use BubbleUPNP to share media (video, mp3, pics) on my phone to my Nexus 7...and vice versa.

Both of these methods require no downloading of media to the device.
SMB/UpnP via "FileExpert" app to view/play any files on your PC via wifi.
"PLEX" for streaming movies from your PC.
Another alternative is "UpnPlay".

If you setup MyPlex you can even stream media over the internet from your home PMS to your client
I use the app MediaHouse its free on Play

Thanks for the help everyone. I've tried lots of apps and methods yesterday.
File explorer > SMB allows me to find my mac on the network but it will not give me access, even with the right login and password. If this could work, maybe could be good way to get access to all my files. My Mac has File Sharing on with SMB but I dont know what the problem is.
Also tried Tonido and it's alright. The interface is decent but the problem is the video player is jacked up. No progress bar and the screen size is jacked. If that works then this could be a good alternative cause it allows you to type in whatever your http URL is and have access from anywhere.
Also tried Plex and this one is probably the best one so far. The UI could be better though. It also does automatic artwork and titles and some of my videos and stuff have the wrong labels. You can't know what it actually is until you press play and watch it. I wonder if there's a way to just keep your original filenames and thumbnails..?
I would like to the UPnP stuff but I don't quite understand it. If I download those apps such as Bubble UPnP or MediaHouse, what do I have to do on my computer (Mac) to allow for the app to see the files? Do I have to install a server side software like Plex? In all honesty I would prefer to install a server program and just leave it and not tinker with IP, port and all that stuff.
Any ideas?

Since you mention file explorers, have you given ES File Explorer a try? I use it constantly on all my Android devices for its good interfaces with SMB, FTP, GDrive/Dropbox, and a lot of other cloud/server options. It works great on my Win7 box's SMB share (under its LAN share option), and it has the ability to connect to FTP servers as well, which should be relatively easy to find step-by-step guides on setting up on a Mac. ES -can- stream files and play them with either its built-in media player or any other on your tablet, but I find it more useful for quick and easy copying media to my tablet for watching/listening then deleting.
With respect to the Plex metadata being incorrect, according to the plex wiki you can get it to use "local media assets".
Again according to the wiki, you do have the ability to edit the metadata yourself, something I wasn't aware of, got lots of updates to do on my library now!
I just found an app last night that I really liked using on my N7. It's called aVia media player. It was easy to set up and I haven't found a movie I can't play using it on my tablet. I use Plex to stream throughout the house and also have it on my N7, but I set up multiple user accts for the tablet and didn't want to have to buy Plex app again so i found this instead. It found my Plex MS from my WHS2011 box and connected using dlna no probs. Might be what you're looking for. It'll find any device on your network and stream from it provided you have everything configured properly.
I've had excellent success streaming HD movies from my home network to my n7 using as file explorer to navigate to my windows 7 share d network drive and MX player to open the files and stream. I also have wireless streaming working from my phones sd card to my n7. Need a rooted phone...1. connect n7 to WiFi hotspot on phone 2. On phone open es role manager go to settings>remote Settings> check remote manage and ,make phone ftp server 3. Es file explorer on n7 and select connect to ftp server, enter server address that is displayed on phone, navigate to movie files on phone sd card, play, stream to N7 begins.
One app I use is PlayOn. You do have to pay for it, but you can get a free trial for a couple of weeks I think.
It will stream video, pics, and music. After you connect once from your home WiFi, it will then connect from the Internet thereafter - Almost no set up required. A bonus is you can stream REGULAR Hulu. You can use it with PS3, Xbox, and Roku to your TV as well.
They have a lifetime subscription available, and often put it on sale
I'm thinking of getting the Nexus 7 for my mom as a media consumption device. She will not use it for productivity.
She'll be using the following [and next to it, I have posted my solution for each]:
1. Netflix [use Netflix app]
2. Web browsing [use Chrome]
3. Web browsing while streaming foreign films [would require a flash-playing browser; maybe firefox or dolphin?]
Note: some of the sites she uses to watch foreign films require various plugins (they all work fine on the PC, obviously) but are browser plugins allowed on the Nexus?
4. Media Streaming [Help. I want to be able to have her stream video files from my external hard drive, which I will eventually probably have to connect via a PogoPlug device as my router does not have USB and I don't want to have to leave my computer on all the time for her to be able to do so (since my desktop would serve as a network host, I guess)]
5. Remote access from my desktop to her Nexus on the same network so I can drag and drop files wirelessly [Help. This is the big one. I want to be able to remotely access the folder wherever movies/songs are stored and be able to update and delete on the fly. I have sufficient bandwidth at home to do so. I don't mind physically connecting the devices, but that is more cumbersome and it prevents her from using the Nexus when I'm making changes]
6. Need good ereader support. [She'll be reading books, so I'll need an app that can 1. be very simple to use (Kindle app?) and 2. allow for nighttime reading (white text on a black background). I use Calibre and I should be able to send ebooks to the device that I convert in whatever format the Nexus can accept. If I cannot send books wirelessly, that's fine, since updates would be infrequent. Maybe I can send wirelessly to the Kindle app? Not sure.)]
Since I won't be primarily using the device, I have no need to root it. I think stock Android will be fine for her.
Can this be done (especially #5)?
I have resisted the cloud to this point. I mean, Photobucket has a bunch of my pics, but my main backup is still a physical 2.5" HDD in an external enclosure. I always worried about security or a cloud server going down and losing my data (pics, videos, etc). With my recent order (which has been shipped), I am now interested in converting. The lack of microsd on the Nexus 4 forces my hand.
What are you guys using for cloud storage? Most secure? Most dependable? Storage (GB)? Cloud expense (free vs paid)? You cloud experts... send a little advice my way. Thanks.
I think Box offers the most free cloud storage. You get 50GB once they recognize you have a Nexus 4 (or any LG phone). You can only upload 200MB at a time, though...
Dropbox is the most popular. Starts you off with 3GB, I believe, and they offer a variety of ways for you to increase storage.
There's also Google Drive, which starts you with 5GB.
Those are the three I currently use. I jump between Dropbox and Drive.
BONUS: If you have a lot of music, you can upload 20,000 songs to Google Play Music. That's my favorite cloud medium, at the moment.
Also if you're going to pay, Drive has the cheapest price per GB. I'm running 100GB for $5/month, that with Google Music backs up everything but my videos (and those are, ahem, easy to reacquire). The Drive app for Android is nice and has native support for PDF, DOC, and XLS files.
I use Microsoft's Sky Drive. It's great.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Personally I use the following. All of which is free as well.
Google - Music and Books. I've been pretty impressed with Google Music, and have only just started using it recently (I converted because I had to as well, what with the Nexus 4's small storage). I choose both the above because I like the corresponding apps, and have been happy with prices of Google boobs on the play store. All my music is backed up on my home server.
Dropbox - Small files and some photos. I've been using dropbox for ages now, well before Google Drive came about. It's very easy to access (apps on just about every platform and a web browser interface as well). Truth be told, if I was to start now I would probably just use Google Drive, for consitency with the other Google services I use. One less password at the end of the day to remember. Having said that, I am satisfied with Dropbox. I wouldn't upload anything highly secure there pesonally, as these things can be hacked. Drop box kind of backs it self up if you use the desktop app, since it allows you to automatically download all your files from their server and just leaves it in a dropbox folder on your computer. I think Drive does the same thing mind you. I keep some photos on facebook as well, which I suppose is an option for keeping photos in the server.
I personally don't keep tv shows and movies in the cloud, the cost of steaming it would kill my bandwidth allocation. I keep these all on my home server, and if I go away for the weekend I'll either take them on a usb, laptop, tablet or my phone.
I use Google Music as the cloud service for my music. I use Google Picasa Web and Google + albums for my pictures. I use Play movies for my television shows and movies.
I use Amazon Kindle and Play Books for my cloud services for books. I use Box for the kitchen sink to save all my documents and pertinent information. You cannot go wrong with 50 GB of storage
Mostly all these services are free for me.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA
The only active cloud service I'm using at the moment is Google Music.
I also have Box and Drive accounts but I can't find a use for them really.
I honestly hope Google allows developers access for apps to use Google Music. Pretty annoying.

The benefit of signing up for cloud accounts when they first come out?
I've got 20GB of Google Drive space.... for $5/year.
I've got 25GB of SkyDrive space.... for free.
I use SkyDrive, Google Drive and Photobucket for my photos.
I use SkyDrive almost exclusively for my documents, because Google Drive still just can't figure out how not to **** up Office Documents. I use Google Drive as a backup to store my documents saved to SkyDrive, but never work on documents out of Google Drive.
I use Google Play Music to backup my music. Although I keep about 5GB of my favorite music on my N4. I only use Play Music to stream a song or two on occasion.
I use a DVD player/Blu-Ray player for my movies. I mean, really, I rarely want to watch a movie so badly that I'll watch it on my phone. Tablet, maybe, but definitely not my phone.
If Box is offering 50GB for LG phone users, I'll be signing up for that too. That way, if it changes, I'll likely be grandfathered in.
ownCloud
I'm very keen on trying ownCloud.
It's not easy to set up but it's free and I feel a bit weird about paying a stranger to host my files.
My cable internet connection is very good and my home computer is on all the time.
The upspeed is obviously not as great but I don't think it matters that much.
Is anyone using it already or can share an experience with it?
I can't believe there isn't a way to drag songs instead of selecting a folder. What a pita, I don't want the whole album, I want to listen certain songs.. And more importantly I want to drag and drop from foobar instead of given gay choice itunes or WMP. Uhhh, Google...
