[Camera fix CM11/CM13] for Samsung Galaxy S3 - Galaxy S III General

----This is also a workaround for the cm13 "can´t connect to camera" issue----
Just download and install the app.
Don´t replace it with the stock camera, because after every system update the cm11 camera will be overwritten.
Just deactivate the stock camera
To fix panorama mode:
ChristianTC said:
To make it work Panorama, you must copy libjni_mosaic.so in system/lib/libjni_mosaic.so with permissions rw-r--r-- or 644
Or you can copy in the folder where he was installed the camera.apk, the folder of the camera in lib/arm/libjni_mosaic.so with permissions rwxr-xr-x or 755 (folder arm with permissions rwxr-xr-x or 755)
Lib works for Camera2.apk from cm11 and CameraNext.apk from Cyanogen
I leave lib (decompress), Camera2 and CameraNext, They are installed as a normal apk
Camera2 and CameraNext I've changed he old icon of the Gallery by the Gallery from Marshmallow

Thanks to ChristianTC for his great instruction! Click on his username to view the original thread and to get the downloads for the files.
For CM11:
Download the camera2.apk and go to /system/priv-app via any root browser (i recommend es file explorer)
Search the old camera2.apk and delete it.
Now copy the downloaded camera2.apk back to /system/priv-app to replace the old apk with the new one.
I recommend a reboot now, but should work without it.
After this you´ll never see the "can´t connect to camera" bug.
Here is a full video instruction (with bad english, sorry for this) CM11 camera fix cm11-i9300

Worth a try though it depends on which camera hardware is in your S3.

I found a simpe way to get the camera app perfectly working on the actual CM11 snapshot for the Samsung Galaxy S3.
I only copied the camera2.apk from my HTC One mini 2´s CM11 to the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Then deleted the camera2.apk on /system/app and replace the camera app from the HTC One mini 2.
Now i can take photos without problems and reboots!
Here you can see that the fix is working: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4KRlOjuPEk&feature=youtu.be

Replace the camera2.apk in /system/app with the downloaded one. You have to delete the old one first.

The camera2.apk is only the camera app and not a camera driver for the hardware.
As you can see this is working on my S3 without any problems or bugs.

Camera.apk

I cant launch my camera anymore. The .apk is still there and not modified but when i try to launch the camera from launcher pro it doesnt load. There is no icon for it on the homescreen and ive not removed it. launching the camera from other apps doesnt work either.
I tried to install the modified camera hack that comes with darkys rom but that wasnt successful so i downloaded busybox and tried again, even though busybox seems to have already been installed.
Any ideas why my camera doesnt work or does anybody have the original .apk?
If you download the camera hack for either GB or Froyo(which ever one your on), and get an app that can R/W into the system of your phone you can just copy it into system/app/. You can use File Expert for this, just download go into it's settings>File Explorer settings and enable root explorer. Then copy the camera apk from your sd and navigate to the system>app folder and mount as r/w, then paste the apk. If you want the original apk that came with Darky's rom use a program like Winrar to copy the Camera .apk from it. Hope this helps

FIXED CAMERA ISSUE on Cyanogenmod 10!!!! Now can save photos/videos to External SD!

Hi guys!
I've finally fixed this annoying problem on my Galaxy SII I9100 simply replacing the gallery2.apk file in \system\app with the gallery2.apk file mounted in the latest Revolt JB ROM 3.2 or latest JellyBam Rom (both have a camera option for saving to external sd card).
I've attached to this message the file you have to copy in \system\app.
Obviously, you need root permissions and a file explorer (I'm using use File Explorer)
I suggest you to make a backup copy of the original gallery2.apk file before overwriting it with this version.
Enjoy your new 4.2.1 Cyanogenmod Camera!!! :highfive::good:
Bye!

I don't know how to thank you! I was going nuts because of this goddamns issue. I have a 32GB SD card, and the internal is stuffed with all the apps. This weekend I got screwed with a time lapse of two hours that got busted when I stopped recording due to not enough space (nice that it only tells you after you finish). Anyway, I'm downloading it, and will install in a minute. Thanks a million!
EDIT: This does work in CM10.1 as well. If you unzipped the file in a non-ext based filesystem (fat32, ntfs), you may want to check the file permissions once copied into /system/app. After a reboot both the camera and the gallery went missing. With root explorer I checked the permissions of the file. Yup. The owner was lacking read and write permissions. After fixing this (and a reboot), everything works fine!
Again, thank you so much, ivanceci!
Hi after some days usign the phone as normal, I noticed a slow framerate while recording 720p/1080p videos with this camera...Did you notice this as well?
Hi ivanceci, could you provide information on how did you modify the official gallery2.apk in order to add the external storage option? I understand it's not a very complex option, and it could give me a huge improvement if I could just download the source from CM from the latest versions and do it myself!
As of now, I found out this camera works great for most of the stuff (and can do timelapses finally without any trouble!), BUT it has a rather slow framerate when handling 720p video. It works fine with 480p, but 720p works around 15~20fps. So I would like to take the modification and implement it in a more recent camera apk. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for that! I updated the gallery2.apk with a recent nightly, and yeah, a few more options (like, saving to USB) are available. Sadly, the video performance still doesn't match what would call "acceptable". I think it may be a bit faster than before, but still under 25-30fps.
Anyway, I'm uploading here the apk, as I think it performs a bit better than the older version OP posted.

Hi,
I try extracting file and its giving me error message.
Cheers
know how you can transform an APK in the zip to install CMW
Nice, hope this gets merged to CM soon.
Wondering 'bout the slower framerate when shooting vids, maybe it is because your video now gets saved in your external sd instead of your internal flash memory (which is faster than external sd..). DSLR cameras which shoot hi-res vids clearly state to try to use the fastest memory cards possible (class 6 or above)
My 2 cents

Yeah, but the video data rate isn't so high for phones, AFAIK. Plus, that's something I could do with no problem on the stock ROM, it isn't a feature I just found out

Hm...Nope, I never made a .cwm install zip. But seriously, using the root explorer you should be able to do it easily.
Load Root Explorer, go to the new downloaded apk, copy it.
Go to /system/app
Mount as R/W
Rename original gallery2.apk -> gallery2.apk.old
Paste the file.
Long press on the file, properties.
Make sure the owner has ticked the permissions for read and for write.
Mount as R/O.
You're done. Reboot.

I installed the .apk file but I don't seem to find any option to change the saving location of the camera app. I've turned both the camera app and the galery app upside down but I didn't find anything.
Also, both apps look 100 % the same as the normal Cyanogenmod camera and galery. Is this normal?

Hi clercger,
you should have the options available in the camera menu:
I checked according to your screenshots but the option at the top of the settings was just not there in my camera app. I then decided to redo the whole procedure you posted on the first page, using the .apk that you uploaded (first time I used OP's). I also ticked all the permission boxes in the .apk's properties using File Explorer and now it works.
Thanks for your help.
Hi,
it works on other device with cm10 as galaxy wonder?
Beautiful!!!
This method worked like a charm. I prefer the UI of this modified gallery/camera app. It has a considerably cleaner look to it
Nice find  but, (ain't there always a but) when shooting video it looks warped. It plays back alright, just looks odd when filming.

Hi guys!
I'm bumping an ancient thread here, hope that's okay with you.
I have this old S4+ lying around. I love it's Gallery app due to the built-in possibility to losslessly trim MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) videos by cutting to nearest keyframe, and also lossless rotation by changing the rotation metadata flag of the MP4 file in question. This simple feature is not implemented in "modern" Gallery apps, or well at least not in the OnePlus 5T I'm using today. So, I was thinking I could extract the .APK from my S4+ (running Android 5.x) and put it in my OP5T (running Android 8.x) without too much headache. Guess if I was wrong.
I get the error about that app was not installed. After browsing around on e.g. ApkMirror, I ultimately found a Samsung Galaxy derived Gallery .APK that I could install, it was a very early version (v1.x.something) which has the cutting feature, but not the rotation (flag changing) feature. So, this ancient Gallery3D .apk installed well, but not the one on my own Galaxy S4+.
So, what could be my issue? Is the .APK flagged to be installed as a system app, and due to my OP5T not being rooted I don't have access too /system/app/, therefor the error? Could it be that simple? If so, is it possible the modify the .APK to install as in /data/app/ instead? Of course I'd resign the APK with some dummy/androiddebug signature afterwards to make installation possible.
Could it be some silly (not really needed) demand listed in the AndroidManifest.xml of the APK in question? If so, is it possible to replace the AndroidManifest.xml with a very "basic" one listing more or less no demands, and re-wrap everything with new signature?
I'm really investigating all my options __except__ for having to root my OnePlus!
I figured that I could get a more specific error message from ADB than by just trying to install the .APK through the phone interface.
So, here goes..
Code:
C:\>adb.exe install F:\Galleri_com.sec.android.gallery3d.apk
adb: failed to install F:\Galleri_com.sec.android.gallery3d.apk: Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_APK: Package couldn't be installed in /data/app/com.sec.android.gallery3d-RAEW5FZ4VBWqTWXx48LPmQ==: Package /data/app/com.sec.android.gallery3d-RAEW5FZ4VBWqTWXx48LPmQ==/base.apk code is missing]

The Galaxy S4 and most Samsung devices has a second framework app, twframework-res.apk, that only works with their apps. Here's the fun part: the existing Android framework-res.apk is modified by Samsung so both framework apps are required by a given Samsung app to function. Even better is that you cannot simply port the app and twframework-res.apk to a totally different device and expect it to function. You'd have to port the framework-res.apk as well, and with that apk being a system file, you'd soft brick your device after copying it and rebooting.
The tl;dr here? What you're attempting won't work due to Samsung modifications to Android.

Hi there, @kami2lo I have the file attached to this post. I hope it helps.
It's from the M11 snapshot of CyanogenMod.
You may need to force it into /system/app and adjust permissions accordingly. Use rw- r-- r-- if you need a reference. you can use either ES File Explorer or Root Explorer. Either way, mount r/w on /system and / prior to forcing this APK into the folder. Be sure to reboot your phone when you're done adjusting permissions.
Please hit thanks if this worked for you.

But you never specified TouchWiz until now. When you say stock, I give you AOSP. That camera app should still work. Please try to install it or force it into /system/app with chmod 667 in terminal. You know, when you delete a system app, especially a SAMSUNG system app, it's very difficult to bring it back.
Be careful with Samsung phones and what you change. It can have disastrous consequences.

Mi A1 stock camera app is needed from Oreo update!!

Looks like you extracted it from /data/app since it has the oat folder. Can you tell me the exact name of that folder. I installed A2 camera module from Magisk - https://github.com/Magisk-Modules-Repo/MiA2Camera but now after uninstalling it the package name has been changed to com.android.camera.CameraApplmpl & there's a black banner on the top with the text com.android.camera.Camera on the stock camera app.
