Follow the instructions here instead:
www . gammerson . com /2015/11/how-to-root-moto-g2-on-marshmallow. html
(remove spaces from link, as I'm not permitted to post an actual link)
1st boot take time after unlock bootloader .. if take more
then try to reset from recovery when Power off your device
-for recovery first press volume down button during power button
-select recovery in option
-when android logo comes press again both volume button during press power button and wipe data reset and wipe cache partition too
if you want remove unlocked bootloader logo
-Make sure you have setup ADB and mfastboot on your PC. (Download from above)
-Download the logo file and extract the zip file to get the logo.bin file. Transfer the logo.bin file to some place you can track it easily. Its better if you use the folder where you setup the mfastboot.
-Power off your device and keep it unplugged from your PC.
-Boot into bootloader. To do so, press and hold volume down and the power button for 5-6 seconds.
-You will see the bootloader screen. Now plug in your device to the PC.
-Navigate to the location of the logo.bin file. While the folder with the logo file is open, hold shift on keyboard and right-click on an empty space and select “Open command window here” option to launch a cmd window.
Now type the following in the command prompt to get a code
mfastboot flash logo logo.bin
Now type the following in command prompt to reboot.
mfastboot reboot
Once you reboot, you will no longer see the bootloader warning as it has been replaced with the Motorola logo. You can choose a custom image you like but be sure it is in .bin

Try using this SU as its the only one that has worked for me
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67670718&postcount=2
The issue is in the SuperSU updater script, which can't detect the system and is trying to install root in system mode (it should use systemless mode)
For those users who are stuck at bootloader logo after flash supersu, is necesary to reflash stock rom and flash this SuperSU (I've edited the updater-script to force systemless install)
After flash this SuperSU (updated to 2016-09-01), all updates can be installed directly from the store
Stuck at the start page
The root was done, but while rebooting the phone, the phone stuck on the unlock bootloader window and nothing happens. If anybody had the same problem please tell me how to repair it.

first try using this recovery.
earlier i also face this.
now go to this thread download software from this thread only. there are two thread for this tool but i prefer you to go to this one.

now unlock bootloader.
and go for step 4(which flash twrp recovery)
now flash the recovery which is provided by me using code.
and now go can go into recovery
****************************************************************************************************
i suggest you this guide this method do for me
Disable update CM recovery option in developer options... Then flash custom recovery.... it will work.
once flashing twrp recovery, you will need to use
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1ebf reboot
command.
remove battery after install recovery before restarting phone
then insert battery and start in custom recovery
install Custom Recovery
1) enable developer options
2)enable advance reboot and usb debugging
3)disable Update CM recovery option
4)reboot to bootloader and flash recovery
" fastboot -i 0x1ebf flash recovery recovery_twrpyulolli.img "
5) directly disconnect phone (phone displaying FASTBOOT MODE)
6) remove battery and start phone in recovery mode using volume UP+DOWN and power key
7) And YOUR are IN TWRP RECOVERY ......
THIS method work for me perfectly .....i m also having same problem of flashing custom recovery and again showing CM RECOVERY
:laugh::laugh:
Thank You...!

the latest TWRP fastboot IMG file (Alternate Link) UPDATE: There is an issue with TWRP 2.8.7.0 (SEE THIS POST Thanks @jodaboda ). Please use TWRP 2.8.6.0 for now!
the latest Installable ZIP of SuperSU (Alternate: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu )
You must have already installed the Motorola Drivers, ADB, Android Platform Tools, and mFastboot
mFastboot (get from the previous link). NOTE: Stock fastboot that ships with the Android SDK/Platform tools will likely work, but Moto's fastboot is always suggested!
Your battery has an 80% or greater charge!!
MicroUSB Cable.
Know how to start your phone into the Fastboot AP/Bootloader mode...
Unplug phone
Power down phone.
Hold Volume Down and Power
After a few seconds release Power, you should be in Fastboot AP menu on phone.
The steps...
NOTE: replace TWRP.IMG in the below steps, with the name of the file you downloaded!! Example: twrp-2.8.6.0-ghost.img
NOTE: failure to perform these steps EXACTLY as written can result in the apparence of the Android in distress (logo with Exclamation mark) with the caption "No Command" and the inability to enter recovery, OR it will enter STOCK recovery even though you have flashed TWRP!
Start the phone in Fastboot AP mode.
Connect your phone to PC via MicroUSB cable.
open a command prompt and change to the folder you downloaded your TWRP.IMG file.
type the following, pressing enter after each command, and wait for it to finish before going onto the next...
mfastboot flash recovery TWRP.img
mfastboot reboot-bootloader
Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and VOL UP Key to select
The device should enter TWRP.
If your device is not rooted, TWRP may prompt you to root now or install SuperSU. Do it.
Use the menu options to Reboot to system.
You will likely be prompted to UPDATE SuperSU. Please update it, and reboot.
IF TWRP doesn't prompt you to root/install SuperSU.... (more exact instructions coming later...)
With your phone booted normally, connect it via USB cable to your PC.
Drag/Drop the SuperSU.zip you downloaded onto the phone's internal storage
Reboot the phone into TWRP
Use the menu option to install zip, navigate to and select the SuperSU zip.
Boot to System.
EDIT: 9-17-2015 edited first TWRP link.

When you say "installed TWRP successful"... do you mean that fastboot didn't error? or that fastboot completed the install, you did a mfastboot reboot-bootloader, and tried entering TWRP but it still gave you the "dead android" image?

Sunshine... IF you're phone has never been upgraded to 4.4.4.
BUT if you can get unlock code from Moto, while it can void your warranty (depending on your local laws), that is FREE, and the best way.

after flashing did you but to recovery befour booting system? with my experience i had to boot to recovery first befour system
I've been trying for the last couple of days to root my MM G4 H815 v20e but all the guides I've tried to follow have either wanted TWRP installed before rooting, or root being required before installing TWRP. No matter which TWRP I tried, none would install. Yeah, the install would succeed ok, but when I tried rebooting into recovery all I got was the dead robot. Then I came across a method for running TWRP as a boot img and installing root from there. And it worked 100%, first time. So I'm putting this method on here so anyone else having the same problems as I had, can root their phone.
This is non-destructive but, as usual, I take no responsibility for you wandering from the path and breaking something. You will need an unlocked bootloader, instructions here, and your warranty will most definitely be invalidated after this. The original instructions were in Turkish, so many thanks to the original poster, and to Google Translate for at least making it understandable.
So I take it we're all sure what we're doing with adb, fastboot etc? This is serious stuff so if you don't think you're up to it, don't try it until you are. I'm just posting the method for rooting, the other stuff can be easily found. Plus it helps you understand the system of searching.
So when you're ready, connect your phone to your pc by USB cable, ensure USB Debugging is enabled, and off we go:
Step 1 - Visit https://dl.twrp.me/h815/ and download twrp-3.0.2-0-h815.img to your sdk/platform-tools folder. Rename it to "twrp.img". Copy this file to either the root of your internal memory or external sd card.
Step 2 - download SU zip from here https://download.chainfire.eu/921/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.65-20151226141550.zip and rename it to "su.zip". Copy it to either the root of your phone's internal memory or sd card
Step 3 - switch to your sdk/platform-tools folder, shift and right-click on a white space and select "Open command window here"
Step 4 - type "adb reboot bootloader" [ENTER] then type "fastboot boot twrp.img" [ENTER]
TWRP will now run in memory
Step 5 - As TWRP isn't actually installed, you'll need to swipe the switch at the bottom to allow it to modify your phone
Step 6 - Tap Install and select su.zip. Select "Zip signature verification".
Step 7 - Swipe the switch at the bottom to flash the zip.
Step 8 - It would be a good idea at this point to also flash the TWRP. go back to the install screen. As it is an img file and not a zip you want to flash, tap the "Install Image" button at the bottom right, choose the twrp.img file you copied to the phone, and swipe to flash.
When complete, tap the Reboot button, choose Recovery and your phone should now boot into TWRP. Now choose to reboot to System and allow your phone to restart (it may take a while longer than normal and may reboot , mine did once).
And that's your phone rooted. Install Root Checker from the Play Store and run it to confirm your phone has been rooted.

Without unlocking the bootloader he wouldn't be even able to boot the twrp img, since its unsigned by LG!
This is common sense
If I unlock the bootloader I´ll also fire up the twrp (not boot but simply flash twrp)
Root is just optional there
U rock man!!!
100% working!!!! i've been looking for this for so long and all tutorials were complicated and hard to follow and you came with this simple tutotial xD i have the same lg g4 h815 20e. You are the real MVP!!!:highfive:
But why? Why wouldn't you just install TWRP seeing as you've unlocked the bootloader, might as well make your life easier in the long run...
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp.img
copy twrp.img to internal storage
in twrp -> install -> images -> twrp.img -> select recovery and swipe to install
Can't install TWRP via fastboot (fastboot flash recovery twrp.img doesn't work properly, have to flash the twrp.img inside TWRP itself).

Since you have unlocked bootloader anything will work
you can simply boot the twrp (like the op shows) and flash supersu
or rather -> copy twrp img to the internal, boot twrp (look op) and flash the twrp img (tap first the zip/img checkbox) --it will ask where to flash -> select recovery, don´t tap boot...
Then you might also flash the supersu
and now you have twrp and root

can i use this method for v20d? thx.
After typing "adb reboot bootloader" phone restarts to bootloader. And thats it. Typing "fastboot boot twrp.img" does nothing but writes <...> is not recognized as and internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Whats going on? After typing "adb reboot bootloader" phone restarts to bootloader. And thats it. Typing "fastboot boot twrp.img" does nothing but writes <...> is not recognized as and internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Whats going on? Also if i type adb devices there is empty list of devices attached

You don't have fastboot installed, or you're typing the command wrong.
c:> adb reboot bootloader
c:> fastboot boot twrp.img
What happens if I want to go back to stock, will the device remain as it was before rooting and will receive OTAs and allow device encryption and all?
Hey guys
I just thought we should have a 1-stop-guide for our amazing Moto Z Play. Generally people have to look through various threads before obtaining the real info, this thread was created so that people would find the resources easily without wasting time, looking here and there for information.. I will try to update the thread on regular basis as and when the new developments arrive...
Note: I want to thank all the devs for their efforts. None of this is my creation , i just collected & compiled all the info from various sources, credit as usual goes to original devs
PS: The thread is complete now...Just have to add the images for easy understanding...All the info posted here is latest development with correct info...There is no chance you will brick your phone by following this guide unless you do something wrong...

https://motorola-global-portal.custh...-a/action/auth
2) Enable USB debugging & OEM unlock on the phone (Go to settings -> development options (if they do not have it enabled go to settings-> about the phone and below where it says "Compilation number" tap 7 times to activate the development options).. In the developer options, select "OEM unlock" it will ask for password / PIN / pattern and once activated, we look for "Debugging via USB" and we activate it also, then proceed to turn off the phone)
3) Turn on the phone by pressing Vol down + Power button together for 5 seconds until we get a screen like this:
4) Open adb command window and type:
Code:
fastboot devices
If your device appears on the command window you can continue with the guide, if your phone is not listed, install the Moto drivers correctly and verify if adb is working or not...
5) In the same adb command window type:
Code:
fastboot oem get_unlock_data
You will see numbers displayed like this, copy the code and paste it into notepad..Now eliminate the paragraph break so that there is only one line without spaces… Copy the entire code & login into your Moto account…Now paste the code on the same Moto webpage which was given above…
The unlock code will be sent to your registered email. There will appear an email with the number similar to this:

2) In the adb command window type
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
3) After executing the command, disconnect your phone & with the volume + or volume keys - we move until it says "Recovery Mode" . Press the power button to confirm the entry to the recovery.
4) Once you enter the recovery, select the right button & a menu to choose the language is displayed, it only brings Chinese and English so we will put it in English to know what to do.
5) We will see that it asks for a password, it is the same password that you put to encrypt the phone at the beginning when they set up the factory phone and always asks them to turn on the phone, it can be a password / PIN / pattern
6) Once the password has been entered, the recovery main menu will appear, we will go to "Advanced" and then "Install SU", it will ask if we want to root the phone, we accept by sliding and we wait for it to do the process. Then we give in "Reboot System" to restart and the phone will ignite with root

6) Installing Xposed Framework
Files needed:
1) [FONT="]Have TWRP installed (If not installed refer to section #3 on this thread)
2) Download latest Xposed Installer.zip (http://dl-xda.xposed.info/framework/sdk23/arm/ )
3) Download latest Xposed Apk (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811)
Optional: Download latest Xposed un-installer but ARM 32 version not ARM 64 (http://dl-xda.xposed.info/framework/uninstaller/ )[/FONT]
Method:
1) Copy Xposed installation .zip, Xposed uninstaller (optional) and the Xposed APK to the internal memory (the TWRP does not mount the external SD so do not bother copying it to the External Memory)
2) Install the Xposed APK but DO NOT open it.
3) Enter recovery mode and open TWRP, Choose language and enter password to decrypt your device
4) Once the password is entered, the main recovery menu will appear, select "Install" and a file manager will appear, we will navigate the file down and look for the Xposed installer .zip, something like this:
5) Select the Xposed installer .zip and it will open a zip installer, slide to accept the flash of the .zip and wait for the process to finish. Then we give in "Wipe Dalvik / cache" and then to "Reboot System" to reboot and the phone will light up with Xposed already working.

Nicely work
Really nice thread. Just one thing...
Could you credit me for the modified logo.bin?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69273602&postcount=37
Can I flash logo.bin zip in twrp?
Nope, has to be unzipped and flashed in fastboot, which shouldn't make much of a difference, as it has only to be done once. No need for reflashing after switching your custom rom.

Hey guys, it takes an incredibly long time to download the stock ROM, anybody have a solution for this? It also just stops and says 'network error' at 0.3gb. So I can't unbrick my phone really.

1.- Boot in fastboot mode (power and vol- buttons until the FASTBOOT logo shows up). Connect the phone with USB cable.
2.- Using Windows file explorer, go into the TWRP installer folder, there press and hold the shift key, and right clic the folder. Then click "open command line here".
3.- In the cmd window that opens, write "fastboot devices". Your phone's serial number and the word "fastboot" will appear. If not, the device is not being detected and you need to install the adequate driver. Look in google.
4.- Write "fastboot flash recovery [the name of the TWRP file inside the folder including the .img extension]". Press enter. You will see the output messages in the window, you must not see any error messages.
6.- After flashing the recovery without errors, DON'T REBOOT OR TURN OFF THE PHONE. THIS WILL ERASE TWRP AND INSTALL STOCK RECOVERY AGAIN.
7.- write "fasbtoot boot recovery [the name of the TWRP file inside the folder including the .img extension]". The phone will boot into TWRP
8.- Inside TWRP go to Advanced > Disable DM-verity
9.- Now you can flash custom roms and stuff. To boot into recovery mode power off the phone, press vol+, vol- and power buttons for 3 seconds, then release buttons and wait.
If none of the above works, maybe your bootloader got re-locked after flashing some MIUI ROM and that's why you can't flash TWRP or another ROM.
If the bootloader gets re-locked? We have to ask the permission again? R directly v can unlock using unlock tool? Is der any chances to relock bootloader? By how? Thank u...
thank for help.i flash miui 8.1.1.0 first, fastboot no re-locked ( I checked my status develop option and MI unlocker ). i flash twrp by flour_mo, it dont work but when i flash twrp-caffe 3.0.1 by fedosis ( LOS 13 ) it work. And i can boot into recovery.
