Wifi issues with Plex - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have 3 nexus players (2 hardwired and 1 on 5ghz wifi). I have been having issues with the one on wifi when using plex. Occasionally I’ll get an error in the middle of playback about communication with the server. If I back out to the home screen I’ve noticed that the nexus player has disconnected from wifi. Sometime a simple reconnection wrks and sometime I have to re input the wifi password. Haven’t notice thisa behavior with any app but plex. Any ideas?

A static IP might fix it, you can do that within the network settings. Also, you may want to change the 5ghz channel, I can't remember which one the NP likes better, higher or lower. Just change to a completely opposite channel and see what happens. I have mine set on 48 i think.

Streaming problems with ORB & WM10

Hi,
Is anyone successfully using ORB (www.orb.com) and streaming either video content or live TV to their TyTN?
I can stream perfectly but even in full screen landscape mode the picture is still only about the size of a postage stamp in the center of the screen with the rest of the screen black
I have heard of some people using TCPMP from coreplayer, however this is even worse as the screen (and sometimes the entire phone) just freezes within about 2 seconds of the stream starting. Another problem with TCPMP seems to be that it sometimes asks me if I want to overwrite the live.wmv file which suggests that it is downloading it instead of streaming it
Anyway, I'd much rather have it working in WM10 if only the screen would resize it properly.
Another problem is that I can't stream from my WiFi connection, even at home if I want to stream video I have to use GPRS because I get an error on WiFi (using WM10).
Thanks,
Mark
I use Orb very regularly. I use it with WMP10 on my Tytn and I do not experience the problem that you mention.
The only advice I can offer is that perhaps the the downsizing happens automatically as a result of your network speed. You'll notice that when you log into Orb, the very first thing is does is perform a speed test of the network. It is highly likely the result of that test dictates the resolution and bitrate of video that it streams to your device. I get it full screen with no problem. I'm on Cingular's UMTS in the US. Check that speed test and see what speeds it is getting.
As far as the Wi-Fi goes, I wish I could help you. I can also stream with no problems over Wi-fi. At least you know it's not a limitation of Orb or your device.
After reading your comments I decided to trick Orb into thinking that I was on a fast connection.
I loaded the Orb webpage and did the speedtest using wifi, then turned wifi off and started streaming some live TV...
You're right, it played in full screen
Now if only I could set up my wifi to stream rather than just browse then I'd be sorted!
Thanks,
Mark
Check all your Wi-Fi settings because it doesn't seem to make sense that you can stream over radio but not Wi-Fi. Make sure that the Wi-Fi connection you link up to is set to connect to whatever your main internet connection is on your phone. Also check the router (if you're trying this at home with a wireless router) and make sure your router isn't blocking anything, although when I installed Orb, it configured itself to go through my router without needing any manual input from me, which was nice

Well my Dlink DI-524 isn't quite so helpfull
I've traced the problem to my router, and I can now stream by manually assigning an IP address to the TyTN (as opposed to DCHP) and then putting that IP into the routers DMZ (demilitarised zone).
I'm not sure how safe it is doing that but at least it works now

Loosing internet connection over wifi

hi folks,
this happens both my nexus 7 and galaxy nexus from time to time. While connected to my home wifi they will loose internet connection. They are still connected to my router as i can ping devices on the network. I have to disconnect and reconnect to get net access back again. Im using WPA2 Personal encryption on the routher with tkip/aes
Anyone else experience anything simillar? I have no issues on my work wifi.. it stays connected all the time
Cheers,
Mick
I'm curious about this too. Been having the same problem. I've tried two different routers even went back to stock. I use shout cast on winamp when I sleep. Wakes me up when the music stops.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
seems like there are plenty of users experiencing the same issue

Its frustrating as my 7 and Galaxy Nexus are solid as a rock on wifi at work.. both experience the issues at home. I'll try boosting the power output as suggested here tonight and see how it goes

Changing home router to a wrt-based asus rt-n66u and boosting the output power to the maximum US allowed value of 100mW fixed it for me. Other devices were working fine, even lowly archos 28 mini tablets. It seems that jb is misinterpreting signal strength.
I dont want to run a static IP.
More related to the issue here:

Some testing last night, i upped the output power on my ddwrt router - that didnt stop the issue from happening. Then i went with a static IP. This seemed more stable but i still lost connectivety at one point, only for it to return on its own - before i would have had to connect/disconnect from the access point to restore internet. More testing tonight.. its very frustrating! I dont think its a hardware issue as its happening with both the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. Anyone else having simillar issues?
Same here
I Experience the same, happens almost every hour or so.
All my other wi fi devices have no problems, just nexus 7
Hehehe it seems many of us having wifi range issue. I checked my wifi signal strength thru wifi analyzer app and it seems wifi is solid if only I always have more than -40dBm strength. Which means I needed to be always closer to the router, can't make it when I'm already at my room. Quite annoying but I guess I had to send it to service center.
Tapatalked from my Ace 2
Same problem here....
Weird thing is I have 2 routers connected to each other (dhcp off on second one), having same problem on both routers. I thought it was the internet connection as my HTC Desire does the same thing.
I also tested the nexus 7 wifi with my 3g Desire via hotspot.... and no issues at all for 3 hours+.
So i'm pretty sure its not a nexus issue, unless there are some compatability issues from my nexus to the router.
Ideas anyone?
using static IP at home seems to be stable.. cant understand what different though between work and home that it works fine in the office.. must be a config parameter on my access point at home

WiFi disconnecting issue

Well this is weird, my new note is now disconnecting from my WiFi router after a short period of inactivity. This just started a couple days ago (just before this new 2nd firmware update). I'm not sure how long it takes to happen, but it's somewhere close to an hour. When I find my tablet disconnected, the notifications tell me that there are networks available in one notification and that my crudentials timed out in another. It will not automatically reconnect to my router either, so I have to go and reconnect to it manually each time...and it's a pain in the yang.
The odd thing is, it remembers the WiFi password, so it's not like it completely dumped the settings. So in theory, it should reconnect automatically since it still remembers the network and password.
It could just be my router, but my SIII and my laptop have never had this issue. I checked the settings to see if I was in power save mode or anything...but I'm not.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Well, I have tried restarting the tablet and the router...both to no avail.
This is getting frusterating now. I simply watched an epsiode of the Walking Dead and it killed my connection while doing that...WTF? It also did it later while my tablet was downloading a bunch of updates, so a few of those updates didn't download because the connection died after a while.
Why would it do this even when the tablet and the connection are active?
I am having the same issue, but it isn't my Note dropping the connection, it is my router rebooting.
Next time it happens, log into your router and check on the router uptime to see if it just reset.
What router do you have?
Mine is a D-Link DIR-655

I have the same router, but it's not doing what yours is doing (my uptime has been for over a week it says). But that does make me wonder if it is still an issue with the router...
I have been searching and some of the other samsung devices that had issues and some of them (that didn't require root) were fixed by setting the DHCP release time to 2 days (instead of holding it forever) and/or setting the ip to a static one on their phones. I plan on trying this next and letting you all know how it goes.
Yay! So the fix was to set a static IP on my tablet...that's it. My router was already set to release DHCP every 24 hours, so I didn't change any settings there. Before I did this, my connection was dropping about every 15 minutes. After setting the static IP, I let it sit for an hour and it's still holding strong.
Did you set a static IP directly on the tablet, or did you set a reserved IP on the router?

I set the static IP directly on the tablet and I have not had an issue since doing this.
Maybe you can restore your tablet to solve this problem.
does it happen on other wireless networks? what security are you using? wep/wpa?
try changing the security to see if that helps. odd that a static ip fixes it. its almost like it loses its ip configuration.
when your tablet looses network, are you actively using it, or was it in sleep mode?

The tablet would lose connection while actively using it...it was weird.
What's even weirder is that I have NOT set other WiFi connections to static IPs like I had to do with my D-Link router, yet the connections with those other routers have remained steady while in default DHCP modes. I have no idea why this would be the case (it doesn't make sense).
Like I said earlier, my router does not have very much in the way of special settings...just WPA 2, N-only mode, and a DHCP IP release after 24 hours of inactivity are the only options I enforced. Looking at my router logs, it definitely sees my tablet and updates the release time each time I use the tablet...but I don't see anything in the logs when the tablet suddenly disconnects from the router. So I have no idea if it's the router or the tablet. lol
I have not tried another security setting, but I don't want to lessen my security in this environment. Beseides, I know at least one othe router that I connect to is using WPA2 also.
I can live with this work-around as long as I don't have to force a static IP on every other router I connect to.
I have a different model dlink (dap2553) and I have the random disconnects also. I see wifi connected normally but no data flows. Eventually the connection drops and reestablishes fine for a while..before it all happens again.
Has the static ip solved this for everyone?
Tablet works fine on all other wifi aps and all other devices work fine on my ap
I also have a DLink router (DGL 4500), mind you, it's an utter piece of crap and I plan on replacing it with an Asus ac66u sooner or later. I also have this issue where it will show connected but no data will flow for a few seconds and then everything will be fine again. Static IP hasn't really solved much for me. I'm hoping that this indeed is a router issue so I can continue to use this in peace when I replace this DLink junk.
Static IP has not solved it for me. I have been using my travel router at home which does not reset.
change the channel on your router. the channel you're on may be saturated. i've got 3 routers with no problems:
1 belkin n300+ share - stock firmware
1 asus n56u - padavan firmware
1 asus ac66r - merlin
all steady.
Same problem. Just got it today and close to returning it. Factory reset and static IP didn't help.
Wasted 90 minutes trying different things. It's just bad hardware. I even installed Kies and let it re-image the whole thing to MK1 again (very very slowly). Just sitting at the intial setup where you pick the wifi you want to connect to i can watch it disconnect and reconnect over and over. Returning it in the morning.

I'm also getting annoyed with the wifi problem
I'm having this problem too and it's really starting to annoy me. It didn't happen when I first bought it but now I have to re - enable wifi at least 10 times a day. Wifi will turn itself off when I'm using the tablet or when the screen is off, when it happens seems to be somewhat random but it won't happen again for at least 10 minutes after I've re-enabled wifi. I have tried everything but a factory reset...
You guys either have bad wifi/router or have defective devices. Minehas been perfect.

I'm on my 4th Note 10.1 2014. All of them had this issue with a bunch of different routers/configurations.
with four acting up it's quite possible that your routers and configurations are the problem. the note may just be picky mofo and you need to tweak you wifi set up. if you don't feel like fidgeting with your network, just give up and get something that plays well with you set up. when you've got limited free time network tweaking is not oneof the fun things on my list, lol.

Trouble with Wireless AC vs N

So I've been having trouble streaming with my nexus player and decided it may be the wifi connnection. After a few rudimentary tests I discovered that on the N connection I can transfer a file at ~2Mb/s in ES File Explorer over the network, but that on AC the same file transfers at only ~500Kb/s. I have a Buffalo 1750AC router and have no issues on my desktop which is also connected by AC.
File Sharing is done through windows SMB from desktop on AC connection.
I have issue as well, can not connect to to ac 5 ghz on 80 MHz. Router is to link archer c9
I'm using 80MHz channel width (802.11ac) and I get up to 97Mb/s downstream through my broadband connection which is rated 100Mb/s.
The Nexus Player used to lose the connection quite often in the past, which seems to be more or less fixed now after setting the router's Beacon Interval to as low as 37 (I still got a disconnect after setting it to 51 before).
And I'm saying "more or less" since almost every time I reboot the Nexus Player it will only connect if I reboot it for a second, maybe a third time. I'm using a hidden SSID. Manually adding the SSID again in those cases doesn't help at all.
In my opinion the Nexus Player's wi-fi is completely messed up, especially since I've got no problems with my other devices. A working casting functionality is also based on pure luck; sometimes the casting button appears, sometimes it doesn't. If it appears, the casting connection is often dodgy or only the audio keeps playing and the screen turns black. Was using a Chromecast before with the same clients on the same network and had no such problems. And I'm talking about core apps such as youtube.

Really? How?
All of a sudden mine does not see my 5Ghz channel.
On both of mine with the so called 'stable' final release of oreo they are now paperweights... wifi is flakey and regularly drops mainly when connected to my asus (funny considering its a asus product) router.
Also when that's happening it half crashes the wifi on the router until both units are unplugged... have tried wiping both players and the router and it persists.
If this isn't fixed in a update (that ill have to sideload) i got paperweights unless i use otg eithernet adapters.
Not exactly the QC I had hoped to get from google
Edit: Confirmed that it works perfectly via the old usb2 apple eithernet adapter
FYI here are network adapters that i can confirm work.. Apple® USB Ethernet Adapter (MC704LL/A) and D-Link DUB-E100
Even in beta and stable the same problem. After reboot it loses wifi and I have to insert password again

I just upgraded to Oreo and i am having the same issue. My 5ghz APs are no longer visible to the Nexus Player.
I rebooted the routers and factory reset the NP, but it will no longer work with 5ghz. The 2.4ghz works, but the speeds are slower and it buffers with some videos.
Anyone figure this out? The version 8.0.0.
Hoping for a fix so i don't have to rollback.
hmmm...didnt think that buffering problem is because of wifi ...same thing here..

I actually experienced the exactly same thing recently right after my nexus player updated itself to 8.0. Nexus drop WiFi and can’t find 5ghz. I read many posts related and many solutions. I tried to clear cliche data, stop wps option in my modem/router, because it would randomly assigned new passwords. I change Lan to ipv4 only then enabled ipv6 back since I noticed it was not the reason....still WiFi dropped now and then. I have to restart my modem painfully and irritated. Till today I read something about frequency of 5ghz may relate to this. I found my 5ghz is fixed channel then I changed it to “auto” as 2.4ghz. After rebooting the modem, Wala, everything works. The voice search function works too with high speed internet.

I don't think you understand. The problem is the 5ghz wifi no longer works. Your "solution" was already mentioned above. That isn't a solution, the 5ghz wifi still doesn't work after the upgrade.
I am considering downgrading since they aren't any help. The video buffering because i am using 2.4ghz wifi isn't acceptable.
I have the same problem as the original post. After Oreo update, Player can see 5GHz Wifi, but it will drop out once in a while, randomly. Usually it seems to re-connect in a few seconds, but it is already too late and the playback is paused (very annoying). My router is running DD-WRT.
Is there a known fix or work-around for this problem yet, other than side-loading a lower version?
Thx
I am suffering this same issue and the remote is laggy. It started after the Oreo update. I also saw 500 Mbps bouncing around my LAN. At points my AC access points were shutting down. That all had quit, but the wifi issues remain. I do see 5ghz and 2.4, but often get, "WiFi has no internet connection" and streaming quits.
I contacted Google this afternoon, was transferred, no freaking joke, 7 times. They then just referred me to Asus, and refused any further support.
Google has fallen a long way in a very short amount of time. Their support is now abysmal, and all off shore.
Came here looking for this, it can see and connect to 5ghz but both are in and out and video is stuttering. Anyone have a recommended lower version? Or can someone suggest another box that has good bluetooth audio output?
