but how did you get it on beta firmware 5.0.3?
everyone who seems to have received the update was not on 5.0.3. I have yet to see anyone on 5.0.3 confirm they were able to update to 5.0.5.
I'm on 5.0.3 myself.
apparently we can root with kingroot on 5.0.3... so depending on how soon things get figured out related to custom recovery... rooting on 5.0.3 then using a custom recovery and pre-rooted 5.0.5 rom may be quicker than waiting on Amazon.

I'm still waiting on the update URL for the stick. I need either the url from os3 to os5, or the url for beta to 5.0.5.

I've been actively logging in hopes to grab the FTV Stick 5.0.3 -> 5.0.5 URL but at by the looks of it someone going from 3.x -> 5.0.5 should be able to grab it first. We shall see... :fingers-crossed:

5 to 5 updates are all incremental, and I have them already. I need the 3.x -> 5.0.x update to get the full system image.
I have another stick on it's way from Amazon.co.uk, if it comes with 3.x how do I get what you need?

Is there any chance these will be urls will be posted, or is it worth posting, or some risk if they are posted? Couldn't we use the url to copy the image and force the update? I guess now that you have the URLs the best things will come, but I definitely want to get my stick to a rootable place =)

AFTVNews used to have a list of software updates and their URLs. Dunno if it still does. Unfortunately you can't force the update, as you need to be able to write to /cache to do it.

ok I saw it wasn't updated on @AFTVnews.com site ( http://www.aftvnews.com/software/ ) but I guess without r/w /cache it isn't as important wonder if we could replay the sw update check and use a pc proxy to push it. I'm sure I'm not thinking of something more advanced than what you already have though so I can stop and await the update patiently like everyone else, and see if you have the custom recovery already. I guess I'm just excited that after all this time the stick is finally software rootable. That hardware method was a little too tight soldering for me on the stick... at least without some other donor device to practice a few times

The software talks to the update server over ssl and sends it encrypted data. Can't be faked.
Just got the update on the firetv stick today. I guess I can kingroot it now, but is there any chance that there will be another root method for these?
Update: used kingroot 4.1 and it said it failed, but after a reboot it was in fact rooted. Next used adb with su command to pm disable dcp and ota

I've been meaning to update that page for some time now. It needs to be completely redone since there are now newer devices and forks due to the dev preview and the voice vs non-voice Fire TV Stick split.
The URLs are no secret. I hope to get around to updating my software page next week. For the time being, here is everything missing from that page for those interested.

This does not appear to match the binary... wth Amazon
*EDIT*
Your source was for the first release they did, the initial OTA came with a new kernel, and numerous fixes, including fixing the get_user/put_user vuln (CVE-2013-6282) which was what caused the confusion. Binary not vuln, but your source was.
My bad for not pulling their latest source.

hmm, well no guarantees amazon actually posted the correct kernel dump.. that could be an extra headache. I'm a bit new to the android side of things so don't really know what Amazon's track record is like.
fwiw, the src drop I grabbed kernel from was firetv_src_51.1.0.1_user_510055620.tar.bz2 (md5sum: 0cba752bd8e6154667120718efe619b2)

hmm you sure? firetv_src_51.1.0.1_user_510055620.tar.bz2 is not vulnerable, but the source you linked to is
Possible to mitm the update process. I do believe it is http. This is why i was asking for a pcap of it, but by the time I got mine I had already confirmed I could do what I needed and didn't bother actually get a pcap.
Blocking the server providing the OTA alone won't allow it to boot, intercepting it and telling the unit that no ota is available probably would.
so is the OTA gonna patch the vuln that allows root ?

hmm, can you check md5sum on the file you got and see if it matches what I have. There were two files available to download when I grabbed the src drop..
fwiw, it is no problem to update the kernel to a newer src drop.. the only thing that will take any time is actually downloading the src drop

damn.. well, I'll go ahead and download the other tarball (will take a while, on slow network connection at the moment) and import it on another branch and see what the difference is..
btw, if anyone else has downloaded firetv_src_51.1.0.1_user_510055620.tar.bz2 more recently, could you check md5sum to see if file has changed since the day of the announcement?

well, if you have a good network connection, you can probably get it faster than I can..

btw if anyone else did get a packet trace of it contacting the ota server, I'd be interested to see it. (Well, if no one replies before tomorrow when my box, then don't bother, I can get the trace myself. I'm just impatiently waiting now )
is your root exploit secure enough to outlive the updates ? any chance a virgin box can be spoofed later to limit the OTA from patching everything ?

Not to my knowledge, possibly if you can feed it a low version number then you can boot without taking the OTA, and then use public roots

are there other recent ones android-using peoples of the world should be aware about? 9950697?

I've pushed firetv-0 branch which is from firetv_src_51.1.0_user_510047320.tar.bz2 ... definitely looks like some additional error checking, etc, between the two. Maybe what I thought was the original src drop was the update and visa versa. Not what I'd expect given the file names, but it would explain...
Amazon has updated their Fire TV Source Code page with a new software package: version 51.1.3.0_user_513011520
I haven't heard of anyone receiving this version in an OTA update yet, but I figured I'd let everyone know to keep an eye out and get the discussion going for the inevitable rollout.
Anyone already stuck without root would probably get that update since they are stuck.
They have no choice anyway unless they still use one of blocking methods.
We might need at least one person to stay on the first unrootable version in case rbox or anyone else could find a new exploit or something.
I wonder, what has changed in this new update anyway?
Edit:Amazon, listen to the users of Fire TV and add support for USB Media Storage.
It probably had a negative effect on sales, especially since the blocked root access which was the only way they could access USB media storage using stickmount.

so native enabled usb storage with the update? we need to get that aspect without updating for us rooted users. im kinda tired of the stick mount method. it would be nice to not need it
So this tarball is smaller than the previous, but I can see no difference in it. Quite strange...

I don't think there was any doubt they would eventually add it. Ouya did the same thing. Originally yhey said it was over security concerns they needed to work out.
lost my root...Help Geohot!!!
Damn it!!! I just lost my root. I totally forgot to disable auto update on my Fire TV cuz was enjoying it all customized to my liking. Totally forgot to hack auto update feature. This sucks!!! :crying: It just happend about 10 min ago. Came back to tv and saw that amazon home screen was on screensaver. Knew that I had left Fire TV on xbmc. Went right to settings to see if box had been updated, and sure enough it was 51.1.3.0_user_513011520. So bummned out ritht now. I have another box that is disabled for auto updates, but this one is back to stock features. XBMC still works, just all root access apps are no longer working. Have to wait for root access to arrive again...Help Geohot!!! We need you!!! Yeah...this sucks.

And I'm assuming you actually tried all the root methods and didn't just assume it wasn't going to work? I know the reports were that 51.1.2.0 didn't allow root, but unless they are lying about their source dump, I see no evidence that they patched the kernel vulnerability.

I've read that v2 of towelroot does not work on the Fire TV. I personally have not tried v2. I've used both v1 and v3 of towelroot successfully root on 51.1.1.0_user_511070220 and older.
One of my Fire TV's just got the update notification. Unfortunately it's my primary device, so I blocked the update. I'll be trying to get the update on a Fire TV that I don't mind losing root on. WIll report back shortly.
The download URL for the version 51.1.3.0_user_513011520 update is: http://amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuit...ueller-ota-51.1.3.0_user_513011520-signed.bin
Just a bit of clarification as the first mention of USB wasn't clear to me the later posts assumed USB is enabled in this version. Can anyone actually confirm that they have a USB drive working on this latest firmware version?
I just checked for updates and my FireTV is still on 51.1.1.0_user_511070220 with no new updates found. It never updated to the 51.1.2.0 version, was never rooted, updates are not blocked, at least not intentionally.

When you say older, do you mean older as in update 51.1.2.0_user_512073320. Cuz update 51.1.3.0_user_513011520 is not able to root with towelroot v3. Wishful thinking on my part thinking it will work.
I have rooted 3 Fire TV's. All 3 came with software 51.1.0_user_510047320 and I updated all to 51.1.2.0_user_512073320. I rooted all with towelroot v3. Towelroot v3 no longer worked after update 51.1.3.0_user_513011520. That's the first thing I tested after auto update happened. Towelroot v3 state's "This phone isn't currently supported". So no "rain" for me I'll try to find v1 or v2 of towelroot and see what happens.
---------- Post added at 01:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:03 AM ----------
Well that was quick...and painful. Towelroot v1, v2, and v3 are now confirmed by me, to not be able to root Amazon Fire TV.
O'well, I tried.
v1 just halts but was able to press back button and get out. v2 and v3 both say "This phone isn't currently supported". Good thing I have a spare Fire TV
In all honesty, as long as XBMC still runs on Amazon Fire TV, this shouldn't be such a total loss.
But when you get your settings and your customization just right, and then its all gone, it really hurts...a lot.
Just got to wait now till further updates on root for this last Fire TV update.
Just a FYI. My first 2 Fire Tv's came from Amazon. 3rd one was from Best Buy. All came with Amazon's 1st firmware put out for this box 51.1.0_user_510047320.
I was expecting latest update when ordered from Amazon for sure. That was weird.
Heads up Everyone. Don't forget to disable OTA update for Amazon Fire TV so you can keep Root Access.
Silly me forgot to follow this big rule.:silly:
I was able to manually install v51.1.3.0_user_513011520 onto a rooted Fire TV that had not received this update.
I can confirm that towelroot v1, v2, and v3 all CAN NOT root the Fire TV running v51.1.3.0_user_513011520. Towelroot v3 reports that the 'phone' is not compatible, while v1 and v2 just sit there frozen when you press "make it rain".
I'm currently going through to determine what has changed with this new update. Please list anything you'd like me to check.
Thanks for checking into this update.

Please check if the USB port is active and allows access to external storage from XBMC. I don't care if I can root as long as it supports external USB storage... 4TB hopefully

I don't know why everyone thinks out of no where Amazon would add USB support...

Preliminary examination shows that the main bootloader hasn't changed, but the sbl1/2/3 and the rpm images have changed. The image was built on September 5th. It looks like they added german to the recovery. Not sure how it decides german vs english, probably means there is a difference between the english and german versions.

That's a big NO. XBMC does not detect any external storage. I don't think Amazon will give end users this feature.
Only root access will allow this. Hoped might just work, but only way this would work is with root access.
Wishful thinking Amazon will add this feature.
A "no go" for external storage on latest update 51.1.3.0_user_513011520.
Hate being the one know this first hand.

Damn, it looks like the german Fire TV will be shipped with the unrootable firmware
Hope we can find a way to get it rooted soon.
Is sideloading still working with this firmware? Without XBMC, this box would be useless for most people.

Big thanks. I checked it found nothing special and copied it to the internal storage of my 4.5.3 device. Disabled Wifi and run the update from the settings menu. Now my device is on 13.3.2.8.
How did you grab it?

Hello,
Can I ask how you managed to run the update from the settings menu?
I Don't see an option to run updates from there! I too am already on 4.5.3 and would rather like to rollback to an earlier version if it is indeed possible using this rollback file.

Just want to confirm it worked on my 4.5.3 too... switched wifi off first and all seems good !
Rollback from 4.53 to 3.2.8 also confirmed for me!
Many thanks ONYXis, that worked perfectly! I too can confirm that it worked and I have rolled back from 4.5.3 to 3.2.8.
Can hardly believe it was that easy. Now too look around some more to find out what I can do now I am finally rooted.
Thanks for your help.

Just had a thought, as we effectively rolled back our devices, does that mean we will NOT get ota updates from Amazon now? It would be pretty handy if they didn't work oat now. Save is from worrying about losing root access
has anyone tried this on 4.5.2?

Wish same can be done with Apollo but there seems no point as there's no TWRP / unlocked bootloader.
I'm not trying to point finger at your work just saying if bootloader unlock can be achieved for Thor or Apollo over 13.3.4.8 ~ ish versions....
edit : please add "Thor" to your title [emoji1]

Depends on what you mean. You say 3rd gen, I assume you are talking Apollo, correct? If so, you may be able to roll back to 3.2.8 & from there upgrade to 4.5.2, which can be rooted.

You need to be on 4.5.2 (or lower) to rollback. If your device is at 4.5.3 (or higher) you're stuck with Fire OS and no root. To roll back start here. READ, READ and READ some more. You won't find many tutorials. Don't expect to pull off rollback/upgrade/root/gapps in an evening. HDX is a tough bird; easy to brick with limited recovery options. Do you homework before flashing anything.
Good luck.
Oh never mind. I got them to rollback now rooted with twrp now to try some custom roms

Great! If you post again please include current fw level, etc. Those who responded (including me) assumed you had a newer device and based responses accordingly. Trying to get my head around "got them to rollback" and "now rooted with twrp". Rollbacks usually don't conclude with twrp unless you start at 3.2.6 or below.
Well it was the 3rd generation Apollo with 4.5.3 on it. Contacted customer service told them it had all sorts of issues he went ahead pushed back a roll back to 3.2.8. Then I went ahead and rooted it using the KFHDX toolkit. Originally safestrap wouldn't boot into recovery until I updated it to safestrap-Apollo 3.75-0s3.2.4-b02. Now have twrp was able to flash thro-gapps-installer1.zip. also disabled OT updated.
Current version 14.3.2.8_user328003120
build number date monday december 7 2914 1':19pm mst

Thanks. Some important tid-bits in your post:
- Amazon rolled back an Apollo (!) which they have been reluctant to do of late. No one has been able to capture the 3.2.8 OTA image which would be a tremendous help to users who are marooned at 4.5.x. While it may be too late can you fire off a PM to @ONYXis as he has a method for capturing the image file? Thanks in advance!
- You referenced 3.2.8 and twrp. Do you mean Safestrap which is derived from twrp? If you indeed have twrp installed with 3.2.8 then you have accomplished something that no one else has!

The version of safestrap I used was deprived from twrp it looks like but boots into it and lets me flash and put custom roms on. Just fired off my pm and about to do it for him hopefully I can capture it.
Okay had to do it twice but he should have captured it at least one time hope it works for everyone.

If anyone wants to sign up, the Vultan OTA is available. It's a Developer Preview ROM for the Shield Tablet, Shield Tablet K1, and the Shield TV.
It's rolling out now for those of you that are interested.
https://developer.nvidia.com/shield-developer-os-images
Don't just go and run with it though. Be sure to read what it is, and what the point of it is.
Android 6.0.1 as well!

You have to supply your serial to obtain the update.
This way they can track who is sharing builds.
The Vulcan build is coming for everyone. According to nvidia it is obtaining certification before general release.
I presume this means passing Google CTS.
To access the Vulkan Developer Preview OS, please?*email us.Please include:Your name and companyYour SHIELD's 20 digit serial number and a screenshot of the Settings->About pageYour SHIELD's device model and nameFor technical support and recovery info, please visit the?*NVIDIA support site.
Hi !
Someone has received an answer ? How long does it take ? I sent my demand few days ago.
Received mine today and installed it, hopefully the 6.0.1 should make the device snappier and better
Received mine too
Édit : First impression with this update. No bug so far, everything is smooth. Autonomy is much better.

Is there a version of twrp that works with this build, or did Nvidia just get rid of the benchmark blocker? If you did get twrp installed, could you let us know which one? Thanks

Benchmark blocker is still here, I removed it.
For TWRP you can use this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=55446061
It's still a bit buggy but it does the job.
dont suppose anyone can upload a TWRP backup of system and boot of vulcan.

Dunno if this works, but just register on their website. They're very kind in case something is missing or went wrong. Also fast response. I admitted two devices which were accepted and got the OTA within a day.
Very cool! I had a feeling shield wasn't going to get marshmallow. I'm curious when the public release will be... Dunno if I wanna get the beta version yet?
is it an OTA once they give access, or a local download? I don't mind waiting a month or so if that's what it's going to take.

The shield has had marshmallow 6.0 for a while now. This is 6.0.1, still marshmallow, just an update preparing for the Vulcan graphics engine I think.

It's an OTA, that's why they need your serial number, and I've waited only few days to have an answer. I'm still happy with it.
I like how the Nav buttons separate in landscape mode for better thumb usage in this version.
I tried to get it on my pyro maybe it will override the killswitch :b

Does that TWRP work for the K1 version?
So how come I'm on 5.1.1 and it says I have the latest update? 6.0 isnt only for the shield k right?
I have the regular shield with LTE. I won't get the K because the LTE is a must for me.
