S4 no power, but battery full - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, i've been running the s6 rom on my s4 for afew weeks without any issues. However, after charging overnight my s4 will not power on at all.
I have tried
taking the battery out and holding the power button (20secs) - no success
Replacing battery - no success
Holding recovery keys - no success
Any other tricks to power on? May have a bricked phone?

I'm afraid you've burnt your phone.
Sent from my GT-I9500

Might have a power button problem.

Power button is fine, but volume down button is a closed circut. The power ic chip was getting hot but is now cold - assume ic burnt out.

Does the PC see the phone in any way, form or fashion?

[Q] My Aquos Crystal appears to be bricked after complete discharge

Hey everyone,
I don't know what happened wrong with my interaction with AQUOS, but the phone appears to be bricked.
Here's what happened.
Bought my phone from Boost, successfully switched carrier to Ting
Have been using the phone for more than a month without any problems at all
Yesterday, I left the phone without charging and it fully discharged
I plugged it to charge and came back to turn it on after a few hours later. This is when I noticed it wouldn't turn on.
I tried a couple things: holding the power button for a long time, and a hard reset (volume down button + power button). But the results were the same.
The screen doesn't turn on. While holding the power button or power + volume button, the only feedback from the phone is a series of prolonged vibrations (~10 seconds) separated by a brief pause (~1 second).
Have anyone experienced this problem?
Any advice/insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated.
I've had similiar issues with tablets where it completely drained and wouldn't charge via USB. At most it'd just give off a single vibrate and then die before even flicking on the screen. Try this, plug a USB cable in for a full 24hours before you hit the power button. Then give it a try. If it pops on to the screen where its charging after that let it get a full charge before fully powering on. Hope this helps and also hope its not due to the switch to ting.
Best of luck
PHONE OFF
This could be due to a bad usb connection. some usb when broke will actually discharge your phone or tablet so try to use a different usb. PLZ POST BACK IF THAT DIDNT WORK I HAVE MORE SOLUTIONS

Did you used Original Samsung charger? if not that might be the problem.
Your phone is probably damaged internally since you said it overheated.
Go to your nearest samsung store or carrier and ask there. hope your warranty isnt voided yet.
Good luck.
i borrow charger and im not sure if its original or not. im not sure if this still has warranty.
what might be the problem? how much will i pay if they fix my phone?

depends on samsung maybe its for free.
The charger isnt compatible with your device and maybe it overcharged and overheated the device.

Is my phone done for? (Cant bot/charge/enter download mode/no response)

So few days ago my phone suddenly turned off and kept rebotting itself (It would reach the samsung galaxy logo and then turn off). I thought it was a battery issue so I removed it for 30mins and tried again, worked fine for an hour then problem started again. I left it over night to charge in the wall socket incase.
Same issue next morning and no solution.
I replaced the battery with a friends and the same issue happened on my phone (i used my battery on his and it works fine on his) so I removed the issue of battery itself.
That evening the phone then just stopped responding at all. It would not respond to pressing the power button (no load, no vibration).
Tried entering download mode using vol down + home + power. Nothing. (So cant use Odin)
Tried entering recovery mode using vol up + power. Nothing
Tried hard reset using vol up + power + home. Nothing.
(All the steps I used a fully charged battery from another s4 phone and removed/re-entered before trying again)
So I check online and notice some people having issues with power button, but even if that is the case - wouldn't my phone still charge? I dont even get the battery chargning icon on the screen when plugged in either PC or wall socket.
I opened it up and changed the motherboard with another samsung s4 and my original problem mobo still does not load on the new s4. (My new mobo worked on the old device though).
The ONLY response I got was when I used my original mobo on new s4 device and plugged it into PC, it popped connect and then disconnect sound and thats it (doesnt recognize usb port).
What are my options apart from getting another motherboard or going to a shop for a JTAG repair? I was contemplating just removing the power button and seeing if that helps in getting a charge response lol
Well your power button is broken for sure. Replace it and then test it.

Wouldn't the phone still recognize charging even if the power button is faulty?

It always takes a few seconds before it starts to charge. So maybe the device reboots before reaching the charging phase. I'm guessing though. But since your problems started with power button issues it would be the logic place to start.
The part only costs a few dollars.
Well I'm exactly in the same situation as you, since this morning on a i9505 running JFLTPE-GPE 5.0 ROM. The screen appears for 1 second or 2 (Samsung logo) then it powers off . I need to remove the battery to try something else.
Same behaviour, even for recovery mode, so Odin is not an option.
I thought that changing some kernel settings have caused that, but as I just put them back to default values, it should not happen.
I didn't have some power button issues, it was just powered off at my wake up this morning. In your case, does your phone vibrate and power up instantly when you put the battery ? That's the case for me, but it should not be the normal.
My problem is actually solved : indeed, it was the power button. I removed all the screws and played a little with this power button (air dust, etc...), enough to make it start correctly !
I managed to do some backups, and now I hope that it won't break again.

Yeah, that happened before (automatically powering up, vibrating, going to samsung logo and then shutting down and doing it again until I removed battery - putting the battery back in with start it up without pressing the power button).
When it was in that phase, the one thing that did work was doing a soft reset (home+power+down vol, and then holding just power) - however that only worked for like an hour before it went back to the restart phase.
However now it doesn't respond to anything at all. (Any kind of response I got was when I put that mobo in another s4 and plugged in usb, which just gave a connected/disconnect sound on w7, no life on the phone itself).
Be very careful as to what you do, I suggest you do NOT leave the battery on it and charge it (which was the last thing I did before it went unresponsive) - my guess is phone went haywire trying to turn on/off continously.

Galaxy s4 dead

hello dear xda,
today i have suddenly experienced my phone dying :
it is constantly trying to turn on, going to samsung logo and then turning off, as long as the battery is in it does this without me touching anything..
even if i try to boot into download mode it goes into it for 5-10 secs while i cant control volume buttons at all and reboots again, while i cannot boot at all into recovery
volume buttons seem to work because it lets me go into downloadmode confirmation screen ( to either reboot or continue )
im thinking battery might have died but im not sure.. because it might be the rom just bootlooping
i have searched the forums and internet for a solution but did not find any
i was on ressurection remix rom with GALAXY S 4 I9500 variant
please help and thanks in advance! :crying::crying:
What you're describing sounds a lot like your power button is stuck in the pressed position.

that does not seem to be the case sadly..
thanks for replying
Unfortunately, it seems to be a hardware issue, rather than software. I have installed tons of custom ROMS on my S4 so far, and I haven't had any issues of that kind. Something is wrong with the hardware I guess...
As I said, I'm pretty sure it is the power button. I've seen this behavior before.
When the battery is dead the phone won't even turn on.

Just had the same problem, re-soldering new power button fixed.

Definitely a power button issue. The giveaway is that you say the device starts this boot/restart cycle as soon as you put the battery in (without you pressing anything).
No two ways about it....
It *IS* a faulty power button.
I have seen this issue on other Samsung devices too, and every time it's been a faulty power button.
My last s4 seemed to have the power button problem too, would reboot, logo, reboot.
Could interrupt the rebooting by holding volume down to go into flash mode, would remain stable until battery eventually died.
Couldn't boot into custom recovery, with volume up, which almosts confirms the theory, because holding power button down may reboot it from recovery.
Occasionally, I could get it to completely bootup, use it for 3-20minutes before it would shutdown.
I used multimeter to confirm operation of the switch was correct. Seemed to work fine. But I never actually removed the switch.
Decided to just replace the logic board and deal with it at a later date.
Reading about this again, I might go ahead and desolder the button, this weekend, and check functionality.
My conclusion was that I had some degradation in the internal memory storage, that affected the recovery/bootup or some heat damage
My device first decided to shutdown and go into reboot loop whilst using it on a long journey, I was using Google navigation and youtube in multiwindow mode, and the device was toasty warm.
@reluctant_traveller your issue is probably not the power button unless you have a fault with the button that is intermittent (extremely unusual..but not unheard of). Faulty power buttons are *usually* in one of two states...either open circuit or closed circuit. In one state the faulty button will cause a continuous reboot/shutdown/reboot cycle every 10-15 seconds until the battery is removed, in the other state, you'll get no reaction at all from pressing the button. The fact that you say you had the device up and running for between 3 and 20 minutes points to it being something else.
Yep, I keep meaning to investigate further before binning the board, I will definately grab my hot air gun and try and see if I can get it to power cycle from adb mode.
It is possible that the thermal pads are not taking the heat away from the cpu, possibly due to movement or overstress.
The screen did used to get very hot around the position the cpu would of been.

i9505 wont boot (power button?)

So my i9505 suddenly turned off one night and when the battery is inserted it turns on by itself and after a second cuts off. Its like the power button is jammed or something. I put some alcohol in the power button and pressed it lots. This made no difference. Anyone got any suggestions?
Do you have a multimeter to test the power button connections to the motherboard?
There should be three contacts for the power button.

Ended up buying a note 3 to replace it. A shame, was planning on keeping the s4 for longer. Now I have loads of useless s4 parts and 3 batteries haha.
The note 3 is a nice phone too. Love the big screen and pen.
Maybe sell off your s4 parts or give them away?
When I have cell phone or computer parts that I no longer need and they have little value, I give them away using a local buy&sell forum in my city.
