Hello,
I just received my new GS4 last night. Google Now crashes repeatedly. It will run OK if I don't add a sports team or a stock ticker but once I "customize" it, it will crash every time I start it.
The error message is "Unfortunately, Google Search Has Stopped".
I have cleared data and then I go through the opt-in process. It will run fine but as mentioned as soon as I change a setting, it will crash and then crash every time after that.
It's Google Search 2.4.10. I can't update it via the Play Store since it's a built-in app. Software version is L720VPUAMDC.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Erick

Google search is updated via the Google Play store. That's where I always get the notification to update. Sometimes it is a manual update. Check there for an update. Google Play > Menu Button > My Apps > See if it has an update available.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had checked that option and there was nothing. I checked the version number there 2.4.10 and that appears to be the most current build.
I just wiped my phone this morning (factory reset from recovery) and signed in. I did nothing else, didn't install any apps, nothing. Went to Google Now, added a sports team and the app crashed as I backed out of the screens. If I press the google button (to the left of the search bar) on the home screen, it hangs. Sometimes it comes up for a sec and then disappears but most of the time I get the "Unfortunately, Google Search has stopped".
This is really odd. I would be very surprised if I am the only user having this issue

Although my sports teams setup in Google Now carried over from my GS3, I decided to try adding another team. I was successful in adding one and backing out of the app without it crashing. I also hit the google button and still didn't have an issue. Not sure what's going on with yours, unfortunately. I'm running 100% stock MDC Android that came on the phone out of the box one week ago.

I have not tried this but I have read of others apparently solving this issue but uninstalling Google Search using Titanium Backup (requires root) then re-installing via Google Play.

Thanks. I saw that too. My only concern was if I should just bring it into the Sprint store first for them to have a look at it. I was worried that if I went the root route to correct it (and I do intend to root anyways), if that didn't correct the problem, then I would need to bring it into the store for them to look at.
Will the restore OS/Wipe Disk option (from stock recovery) bring it back to 100% "original" in case I needed to take it in?
Thanks for the reply. I may just go that route
Unfortunately, Google search has stopped... followup
Did you go with the Titanium backup route an deleted the Google Search app (actually, as I understand it, from the actual ROM... not only as a regular installed app) and re-installed from the Play Store? if so, what are the results?
Both my N4 and my N7 started showing "Unfortunately, Google search has stopped" messages after I edited one sports card in Google Now. Since its happening in both devices it is clearly either an app related issue, a Google related issue or something in between but, definitely NOT a hardware issue...
Your comments are welcome, thanks in advance.

I tested with a friend who got the GS4 last week from Sprint also. I walked him through all of the steps and his search application did not hang at all after adding a sports team or stock ticker. He was on firmware version MDL.
I took it to the Sprint store (even though I bought it from Costco) and they agreed 100% that something was wrong with it. They didn't want to work on it since I just got it from Costco. They said to just take it back since it's so new.
This morning, I received the MDL update. I applied it but unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem
I called Wireless Advocates this morning (the company that sells for Costco) and they suggested that I go back to the store to return it (even though their instructions that arrived with the phone specifically says Do Not Return To Costco In Case Of A Problem.
So, I'm kind of at a loss. If I root it and try to Titanium to delete it, I'm worried that I will lose any recourse with Costco. Once it's rooted, I am out on my own. I am thinking that I will try and return it tonight and if I am unsuccessful, then I will root it and delete the app.
Well, to be honest with you... as annoying and pissing it is to have the "Unfortunately Google Search Has Stopped" problem and Google Now not working properly on its last update, the problem seems not to be as bad to return your shiny new phone to Costco or where you bought it.
This is actually a software problem that Google should be fixing very soon and releasing an update to do so. Bear in mind, also that this very week Google I/O conference will take place in San Francisco and most probably they will release a new Android version 4.3 or 5.... which should include most probably a fix to this.
In the meantime, go to your Play Store, search fo "Google Search" and un-install all upgrade to this app, also disable auto-updates for this app and that should work. I have done it and it is OK (not the latest Google Now..but it works, at least doesn't crash).
During the lifetime of your phone you will encounter bugs in software, as long as they are repaired quickly and there are not impeding the usage of the phone and its critical functions, those are not reasons to return it. My 2 cents.
Good luck.

Thanks Piensa. I appreciate your detailed response.
I am right there with you. I can deal with it as long as I know that it's a software issue and not a hardware issue. The more and more I have been reading (and your reply also) indicates that it is a software issue. The weird part is why my friend's Sprint GS4 doesn't have this problem and the Sprint Store also said that it was a definite bug. That's the part I don't get. Why does his Google Search work and mine is crashing?
Good point about Google I/O (excited to see what they announce this week) and maybe an update will be released. Unfortunately, the version of Google Now included with the GS4 is the very latest (ver 2.4.10.626027) and I am unable to back out any updates (thanks for the suggestion).
I guess I will ride it out this week and see what comes out of Google I/O.
Question. Do you know if I root the phone without installing a custom recovery, can I back it out simply by factory resetting the phone and will Costco/Sprint know that it was rooted at one point?
Thanks again for your help.
Thanks for your comment.
Well, we are all here to help each other...that's the beauty of the Internet !
It seems to my that because of your phone's use pattern the bug got hit and appeared... your friend may not be enjoying his phone as you are...so, no bugs have appeared. Or, he may not have the latest version of Google Search (so he is using an outdated phone!
Pretty much the same happened to me... since few days ago, my Google Now worked perfectly, actually I had no sports card...suddenly, I wanted to check what the heck people was watching on public TV (a sports event) in a restaurant I went to...so I asked Google Now to search..and it came with the names of the playing teams...and decided to add them as my favorite sports in the sports card....everything went down from there when I tried deleting those "favorite teams" from the sports card...everything Google Now started crashing.....
On the other hand, my wife's smartphone, another Android, still works flawlessly... no crashing of G-Now, no weird messages...and she has the exact same Android version as I do.... so, well, we both got lucky finding that SOFTWARE bug.... let us hope that Google will fix it very soon. There are MANY people experiencing this annoyance so, I am confident Google will not let it pass too long...(I understand they may be a little busy with their 2013 I/O event...so, I can wait a few days....).
Again, just downgrade to a previous version of Google Search, by deleting the upgrades of it in the Play Store and don't let it self upgrade Google Searh, for now... if you do that, you will be fine.

I can't back out any updates as there have been none to Google Search. The GS4 ships with the most current. The only option for Google Search in the Play Store is "open".
I can uninstall updates to Gmail, etc but not Google Search (see attached pic).
Thanks for your assistance.
"Unfortunately Google Search Has Stopped
Woow. you are correct.
The version of Google Search that your GS4 came with, from factory, is in fact the latest one. My Nexus 4 came with a previous version installed thus I was able to do the downgrade.
So, if you are not rooted, and/or do not want to mess with your firmware, seems you have to wait for Google to fix this issue. Sorry to learn that friend.
Lets hope it gets fixed very soon.

Yup. I'm trying to decide what to do now. I went to Costco tonight to look into swapping it out for a new one and they don't carry Sprint products in store. So I would either need to work with Wireless Advocates to ship it back and pay $600 for an advance replacement or just wait it out, hoping that the phone itself is fine and wait for Google to correct it.
If I was still on MDC, I would have used motochopper to root it, uninstall Google Search and then test re-installing it to see if it corrects it. But the MDL upgrade today killed that option.
I think I will wait a couple days, see what comes out of I/O as well as the root exploits for MDL and make a decision. It just sucks because I don't want to spend time customizing the phone to my liking in case I swap it out or wipe it, etc.
Again, many thanks for your help.

Thanks. I wish that information like this was more readily available. I have been wiping my phone, making trips to Costco, Sprint, etc and still haven't customized my phone because of this. I thought that my phone was defective but had I seen this, I wouldn't have worried about it and just waited it out.
Thanks.
And it's fixed! (at least it is on my phone).
Google released an update to Google Search today and I can add/remove sports teams and stock tickers w/o a problem!
Many thanks again to the contributors to this thread.

It worked for me! Thanks!! (GS4 - Hyperdrive v10.1)
I've encountered a really strange problem on my watch (Samsung Gear Live) lately. Not a single texting app will let me use the "reply" button with voice.
Example: Friend texts me, text pops up on my watch. I swipe it and click "Reply" and try to reply using my voice. The text will write out on my watch screen, but the red Google mic icon just sits there for about 10 seconds as if its still thinking it's receiving input, and then it takes me to the "disconnected/watch is offline" screen.
But the watch is obviously not disconnected: I can exit that app and tap the screen and say "Okay Google" and then say "Text friend 'hi how's it going'" and the text will send without a problem.
I've encountered this error when using Coffee SMS, WearResponses, and Google Messenger. I've reset the watch, and cleared Android Wear data, and the problem still persists. This makes no sense. Any ideas/suggestions?
I have the same problem on my LG G Watch R.
I received the Watch today, the reply function worked once or twice, but now it does the same as yours
My Gear Live is still under warranty so I've sent it in to Samsung. We'll see if they are able to fix it...

Update: So, Samsung just replaced the entire watch for me. I'm setting it up now to see if the problem is fixed. Has anyone with the same problem tried factory resetting their *phone*?
UPDATE 2: Well, crap. It still doesn't work. I'm going to try pairing the watch with a different phone sometime in the near future to see if it's my phone. It's obviously not the watch.
Out of curiosity, what version of the Google Search app do you have installed?

Okay, I got it working. Obviously, there's probably some degree of magical Googleness that happened, too, but here's what I did:
Background: I had Google 5 installed from the Android M preview, and I had also previously sideloaded a newer version of Google Play Services (still compatible with my phone, of course)
1. Booted watch into recovery; factory reset several times.
2. Meanwhile, uninstalled updates to Google Play Services, and then download update from the Play Store
3. In the Play Store, uninstall updates for Google App (Google Search), then update from the Play Store
4. Turn on watch, pair with phone, and then pray over it
5. Test out an app (I use Coffee SMS), text yourself, and try replying to it. It might tell you that "Google Play Services must be installed" - I rebooted my phone and then manually connected the watch via the Android Wear app, and then tested it and it worked.
YMMV.
Thanks for keeping us up to date
I too, was finally able to get it corrected, but mine was a bit easier. The only real difference between what you first described and my situation - was that I am using the LG Urbaine Watch with the new LG G4. LIke you (and someone else) it worked a few times and I was thinking that would be my most used feature. Later - it stopped working and my research began. I thought it might have something to do w/ my loading up the LG Call companion app - but after taking that off - it still didn't work. Finally, a good friend of mine that is an Android lover - suggested I switch from the Verizon Message plus application - to the generic one provided by LG. As soon as we made the switch - the Text message response option appeared again. In fact, in addition the reply arrow - I also could see a full list of the conversation with that particular party. Very happy in making that little change.
Hey guys,
After moving from stock to cm there are some features that I missed a bit.
The Moto Voice is one of them:
Yesterday I managed to install the Moto Voice app directly from the Playstore to my Moto X 2014 (xt1092). I tried the same with several devices but none of them can see it on the Playstore.
You might want to see if you're able to download it but there is an issue (as always ^^), the app is installed and running but doesn't react to anything, I'll join some screen shots to let you see that.
As you can see on the screen shots other features like assist or action are working.
There might be some way to fix the problem of Moto Voice, I'll continue to try to find a fix and I'll share with you the progress of the work.
You can also try to find a fix on your way too that would be a big help
Hit the thanks button if you would like to see Moto Voice coming to our Moto X running CyanogenMod

Moto Voice works with the low power processor and needs support in the kernel and I think that is not in the public domain so difficult if not impossible to make work. Install the Google Now Launcher and "Ok, Google" comes pretty close to what Moto Voice does and everything it does do is a few seconds faster than Moto Voice (because most of what Moto Voice does, it just passes to Ok, Google anyway.)
Motorola is dropping Moto Assist in Marshmallow so that won't be a consideration in the future.
All of the Moto Actions are supported in CM 12.1 in Settings->Gestures.

Yeah the best thing with Moto Voice was that it runs in background even while the screen is off, and yeah, it makes sense that it is run by the low power processor ^^.
I didn't know Motorola was was going to drop moto assist, that's pretty sad, also its pity that at the time Motorola was Google and that haven't made a fully open source Smartphone :/
Well thanks for illuminate on that issue
Moto Assist , is another app which is already disabled in my MotoG
as Moto app will have the Assist integrated in it already; it will be unncessary to put again Moto Assist APK seperately , so the MotoAssist APK which used to be earlier is being removed
i am on MotoG i am currently seaching for MotoVoice , and i found this thread.. hope you find the solution bro all the best
if you can help me .. please visit this thread and see it bro

It has been noticed that with new version of Google Play Music that Moto Display only shows thumb up, previous track and pause/play buttons.
It has also been noted that Moto Display looks for the 1st 3 available options in an app, and since the Google Play Music app was updated the first 3 options are not as useful as they had been.
My question is who is responsible for the fix? Does Google need to update the app again to be more compatible with Moto Display, or does Motorola have to update Moto Display?
This is a useful feature to me that I would love to take advantage of, and I would like to know who to express my concern to..
thanks
This is a Motorola fix. There is a thread somewhere that shows the MotoDisplay app basically just picks the first three "controls" that the music app has available, which is normally Back-Play/Pause-Next. Now it's Thumbs Up - Back - Pause.

If someone does find a fix, please post it here - it's annoying the heck out of me that the second-most-used option (forward) has been replaced by thumbs up, so you have to unlock just to forward the track.
I'm looking for this fix as well...
I made a post in the moto forums.. The mod said this "Fix coming in Always on Display updates, starting next month. I understand it will be more than one release before this is addressed for all software versions. Hang in there!" No help at all, as usual. To remedy the situation for the time being, I uninstalled all google play music updates and downloaded the latest version of it from apk mirror that has the correct music controls on moto display. Version 6.1.2116T.2441907 Make sure you uncheck auto updates in the play store and dont update.
Thank you for the post op, and thanks for the build number for the apk
