Developers breaking good apps for Marshmellow - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) General

Yep, it's that time of year when developers break things for newer OS compatibility.
Beware, before updating from google play... right now I am contemplating dropping play store and any more updates.
Have seen good pay apps break and other apps become socially connected to the point of prioritizing the app on fb or twitter. Really, if I need to be on twitter id be there, now get off my app and leave me alone!
So far FSGO and Webster Dictionary are DOA when using them.
BBC Iplayer, Outlook, Greenify, Pandora, Milk Music, Skype, Text Free, Twitter and White Noise Market are all off my list for any more updates.

?
Skype is working ok for me, I'm on 4.2

Official App For facebook now on the android Market!

Official Facebook app for Android literally just released minutes ago on the Android Market!
I come across it browsing the new apps and it was right up the top!!
Get it while it's hot! It has been long awaited!
Just got it and i like it, however, it still sort of buggy and certainly will be updated soon...
If i click on pictures someone posted from the feeds, the app crashes. Some of the functions will launch the browser, but it's a good start.
** Quick update **
Does come with a widget , No Live chat and No access to Inbox
This app need too much work. Please match the iphone app.
doesnt do much, i was hoping to be able to access my facebook phonebook. but nope.
in a way its better than x.facebook.com because you can comment and like stuff.
double post sorry.
You can access the facebook phone book as a live folder on the desktop. Just press and hold > Folders > Facebook Phonebook.
Yep , The facebook phonebook is pretty awesome ,
I wonder if the iphone app has this? Damn facebook favourtising the iphone and leaving android high and dry for quite a while.........
I wonder if it is even possible we will have the chat function in this app?
Its an early release so it sucks...Hopefully they will correct the bugs

It's not a tuma!
Err I mean, it's not an official facebook app. It's just called "facebook" and it uses facebook's icons, which may or may not annoy facebook itself.
Check out on http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=74769995908 :
This application was not developed by Facebook.

Not tab optimized
Er, I hate Facebook. But, can't you just use the browser for it?
Friendcaster works great on the tab!

I have it, I paid for it because it work great but then it was updated and tab optimized and the issues began. Some stuff will not show up on status updates, I can no longer sync to my contacts, which was great because my texting app (heywire) would show a picture of the person I'm texting with. Also if I click a photo someone posted it shows a completely different photo.
All that also happens on my cell phone along with the tab. I check it in the web browser now but sometimes the app was just faster and more easy to used.
Even though it's not optimized, I'm glad they finally updated it to include support for tablets. I was using the Samsung Social Hub before and just installed Overcome's ROM so I can get rid of the Hub now.
I tried FriendMe, Friend Caster, and just found Facebook (official?) apps. I still prefer to use the browser...
Facebook app keeps force closing. Can't check friend list. And it seems slow to load anything. For me the web-based UI is what I am familiar with and the one I seem to keep going back to.

Facebook video bug fix

I think the most of u recognise this problem, when you watch a video on facebook it stops after a couple seconds.
This worked for me:
Go to settings- apps - xperia with facebook and disable this app.
Now uninstall facebook and install it again.
Please let me know or this worked for you!
Sorry, only worked for a day.
Im sorry for opening new threat and spamming the forum.

Seems to work for me. But need to give it a couple of days to be sure.
This only work for a few hours then the problem come back. You need to install older version of Facebook, version 5 in order to fix the issue.

Both: Sony should make a phone that would run android apps like on other phones, you can blame sony for ****ing something up in their phone so it wont run one of the most populair app properly. But you can blame facebook aswell for having an app that wont work properly on a certain percentage of all android phones. And this bug is out for quite a while so both compagnies (facebook in special) have had the time to fix it if they wanted to..
I don't expect from Sony to put a team at one bug in a specific app searching for an fix, but I expect from facebook that they fix the bug and update their app. You can't tell me that facebook doesn't has a team for bugfixes.
Mine was finally fixed after the latest sony update. I still get the error message but only after the video has played in full. Happy days

Install latest youtube on FireOS 4.5.3 and be able to login WITHOUT ROOT(!!!)

I am running FireOS 4.5.3 on Fire HDX 7" and it is not (and never has been) rooted.
Settings > Applications > Apps from unknown sources is On
I have the file manager with zip support installed.
Uninstall any versions of the 5 apks mentioned below.
Download this zip file:
https://mega.co.nz/#!OItCnSSA!VqBqlbwUa3h5VR0bmIXmRVBq4UeYo5bhBmzmflml3Vk
Open or extract it and install the apks in this order:
account manager 4.0.3
framework 4.0.4
play services 7.3.29
playstore 4.3.10
youtube 10.16.53
Reboot the tablet.
Go to youtube and you should get that normal google account login screen.
Login and presto! There you have it latest youtube apk with sign in ability.
Hasn't crashed on me (yet), but play store does not work (I've tried a few versions).
Yes I am aware of that youtube app with the blue icon in the amazon app store but I wasn't satisfied with it.
I haven't tried any other google apps yet with this combo.
I really hope this works for others. I just spent the last 5-6 hours figuring this out and it's now nearly 2am.
works for me
Youtube works.
Not for playstore gmail.
Oh that's cool I'm glad it's worked for others.
I just wanted to give something back to this forum cause I've gone to it so many times myself.
Found a gmail apk that works
Don't want to burst your bubble, but someone already figured out how to get YouTube to work on unrooted devices (along with other Google apps): http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/themes-apps/how-to-install-gapps-root-t2954372
Yes true but that guy (at end of thread) is 4.5.2 and has to execute some kinda command I don't. Lemme have my glory! Lol
Thanks. Works for me. How about Chrome?

Chrome should work regardless of framework (at least it did last time I tried). If not try Opera. Same underlying engine (Chromium) with a different skin.

That command is for Google+ to work. It's not needed if you don't use G+. But at least you provided newer versions.
Is it just me, or does doing this break other apps? Skype won't work properly (no contacts or message history), TuneIn radio won't even get past the initial screen. Why is this happening? Sorry I'm new to this stuff.
I should add that uninstalling these packages then causes everything to work again, so it does seem to be causing it.

Installing Google framework/services/store/etc on Fire OS is always a crap shoot as Amazon has its own set of conflicting services. Many get it to work (at least partially) while others experience problems. Installing framework/services on an unrooted device presents additional challenges....but also adds a layer of safety as you can typically install/experiment/uninstall without serious consequences. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to your current situation; responding to "why is this happening?". You'll probably get it to work eventually with help from others.
That makes sense. I did manage to get Skype 5.1 working but anything after that breaks. Must have added a new feature since then that gets into that services conflict you mention. No luck with TuneIn, though I found an alternative for that.
Any word on a working play store app? Wife got a Fire Tablet today on 4.5.3 and so far its unrootable and most google things arent working. Thinking about a new tablet at this point.

If your family is looking for unfettered access to the play store you should definitely look for another device. It will be awhile before alternative roms become available to newer Kindles and most play store implementations are hacks at best. While the hardware is wonderful you really have to be wed to the Amazon ecosystem to truly appreciate the device (or be fortunate enough to have an 'older' model that can be rooted/unlocked and run a Google friendly rom).

I appreciate the frank reply. I was able to set her up with Chrome and Gmail which were her main concerns. The 1Mobile 3rd party marketplace had any of the other apps she was looking for. I also finished moving all her books over so she's going to take it for a spin this weekend when we head to the beach for a night and see how it goes.

If you are comfortable with 1moble (one of my favorite 'alternative' marketplaces) then many of the shortcomings inherent with the Amazon store can be mitigated. Chrome (more often Gmail) can get fussy without google services/framework. Opera is a nice alternative that utilizes the same core engine as Chrome. Gmail is a little tougher to directly emulate; plenty of alternatives if the Gmail app coughs up a fur ball (I happen to like Aquamail). You really don't need root but if you choose to do so Xposed framework adds a few nice touches that can further tame an HDX without compromising native functionality.
Hope it works out for you folks.
You can run Google services framework without root. People have been having issues with the newer builds however. If it does not work for you, try build version 7.0.99.

That will work for now (thanks @lekofraggle for the tip) but be aware Google is quickly adapting apps to leverage capabilities introduced in newer builds of services framework. For now that appears confined to Maps and Google Now (eg: card features) and primarly targets Lollipop.
You are welcome. I know about the impending issue with Google play services. Hopefully they fix the issues soon. Google maps works for now but complains.

Google apps

Originally I was excited to go vanilla Android OS but as I continue to run into DUMB limitations of Google apps such as Google Calendar I begin to question my decision.
A few examples:
Google SMS app - cannot multi delete pieces of a conversation. There are other irritents as well.
Google Calendar app - cannot copy and paste an event.
Multiple Google apps - no option to not use the psudo analog clock to set time for alarms and events. For me this method is difficult to use AND I have been trying to get used to it.
I have replaced Google SMS app with Verizon but I am looking for a better replacement.
Google Calendar I am still looking for a replacement.
It seems Google apps are only partially implemented.
Suggestions?
I use Next SMS, but people also like Textra or Chomp.

This free/no ads sms & mms app is great too!

Google apps are only partially implemented. This is typical Google. They finish everything 75% of the way. Textra is probably the best SMS/MMS solution. Lots of calendars in the Play Store as well. I'd look into what's offered.
I am beginning to wonder if that is how they do Android as well...

Pretty much.
Android OS is an "Open System". Unlike other OS, if we don't like any system apps then we can download and install any of other apps that we like.
Just frustrated and letting off a little steam. I have always used Verizon Samsung Sx products in the past and looked over the shoulder of iPhone users. Trying to get Essential to that level of functionality and perhaps gimmickry (text and enhanced voicemail apps) have me pulling my hair out as I fail every time.
If you want an iPhone, buy an iPhone. Of course the price of this phone on promo is probably the finance charge of one of the latest Apple devices.

I have never owned an iPhone and I never will. I just admire their software polish. I despise their total control concept. That is why I have an Essential phone...
"Google Calendar app - cannot copy and paste an event."
This would be good. It does have some good repeat options though, including custom. I have used this to good effect with my 3 on/3 off work schedule, which I couldn't find in other apps. I have requested the copy/paste through the app, you should too.
Another thing, log into your Google account on a computer, your calendar is a little different and has some other options, including duplicate events.
