Windows 10 Taskbar question - Windows 10, 8, 7, XP etc.

Hey there,
I've got a simple question regarding the Windows 10 Taskbar - is it possible to "pin" icons there so that they DON'T MOVE AT ALL, like it was the case with Windows 7?
Win 7: Move an icon to the Taskbar or pin a lauched program there - it stays at the same position no matter what..
If I open an app a second time, a 2nd icon is added to the end of the taskbar and will stay there unless I close that second instance. Even if I close the first instance of the app while the second remains open the icon will stay in its place.
Windows 10: Just dare to close that first instance and the icon will be gone... just think about it and it's gone.
Any way to get rid of that "feature"?

It is called "lock taskbar", and yes, it is available in all windows starting with 7. Just right click your taskbar.

Hey there,
thanks for your answer, but that's not the case.
I've attached some screenshots that might clarify what I'm talking about.
1) Taskbar is locked
2) Windows Explorer is open 2 times, see that the first explorer is the FIRST icon in the taskbar
3) First instance of the Explorer is closed, the first icon vanishes. This was NOT the case in Windows 7 (there would be a "non running" icon left and one "running").

I've never encountered such a behavior. Check your settings for that.

and for which settings in particular should I look? I've already checked everything and googled for this problem, hence my question here before I switch over to the microsoft community.

Kay I am officially stupid. Problem solved.
I totally forgot that I had the 7+ Taskbar Tweaker installed ... this one causes the "problem". Meh.
so yeah, sorry for wasting everyone's time.

How to remove the Bottom tray?

How can I remove the bottom try on my today screen? The one that has the battery / comm manager icon?
Thanks in advance
go to \Windows\Start up\ and remove/move the "initTray"
Thanks... I should have searched first... I found it in 2 seconds.
WOW that worked great... Thanks you for that... it was something I have been looking for.
now for another question... how to I remove the top bar all together, or the bottom bar for that matter?
I was hoping I could get just a bottom bar that worked a little like the taskbar in windows. One not 2 bars to take up the main screen. I would be fine with removing either but I just feel that having both is TOOOO Much and just not required.
Thanks,
SuPerSoBBie
OK well first of all thank you for the info again... I have removed it and it was gone when I restarted my 8125.... but every time I plug it into the USB it pops back up and covers some of my screen.
??? any clue how to stop that ... along with my previous question?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
probably not. or use WAD to.
probably not... is that for both the remove bottom bar and the USB questions? I suppose I shouldn't have asked soo many questions at once. It just confuses me
Well either way Thanks nothin (did you notice I didnt use FOR in that statment)... and I have seen WAD but didnt really want to run such a bulky app. I was hope I could do it with reg or file manipulation. Oh Well...
Thanks again for your help.
SoBBie
hmmm, on second thought it may be possible, but cant check right now..
install vjtoggletoday, then go to its registry and try set "trayvisible" to 0...
(sorry for my funny english..)...
nothin... Thanks again for your responce. I do appreciate it. I just got VJToggle to give it a try. I find that it does remove the bottom bar and the top fine... but I am still having the problem when I sync my PDA the bar returns across the bottom of the screen. Sorry dont have a screen shot but here is what I see:
-----------------------------
STARTButton###########
TODAY PLUGINS
############sync icon##
TODAY PLUGIN (2 lines)
-----------------------------
When I softreset it is all gone (the way I want it) but when I plug into USB the sync icon taskbar returns.
Can this be completely removed where it does not come back. I am going to look into tweaking the sync program... maybe I can turn off the show icon in taskbar or something.
Thanks again for you help..
SoBBie
Are you using a program that allows you to control your wizard from your pc? I can't remember the name of it right now, but when I used it it would cause the system tray to come back.

Enlarge your today screen (how to remove the bottom menu bars)

If you're looking to get rid of the menu bar at the bottom of the Today Screen, read on. This is not a new tip, but might save you time, as there's a lot of different versions of these programs flying around. Only the one below works on WM6 / HTC Touch.
I personally find that the Menu Bars at the bottom of the Today Screen really spoil the look of the HTC Touch's sleek black/grey theme. Besides, the Comm Manager and Contacts are both accessible via the spinning cube (or the camera button if you install Double Launcher) so there's no need to have on the Today Screen, you may as well get more space for plugins, or just to keep everything looking neat and tidy. See screenshot below!
Here's how to banish them forever (?!) :
1. Download ToggleTodayIIAlpha from this link:
http://www.vijay555.com/vj/releases/vjtoggletodayii/vjtoggletodayiialpha.exe
2. Copy it to your \Windows\Startup directory. (or somewhere else and paste a shortcut instead)
3. Go into the registry and edit this key:
HKLM/Software/Vijay555/VJTodayToggle
Change these keys:
Softkeysize = 1
StartSize = 26
TrayVisible = 1
That's it! I've had no massive problems with this so far, although I haven't been testing it for too long. I'd be interested to hear how people get on in terms of stability/bugs. You WILL get problems if you try to use any of the older VJTodayToggle programs in the thread on this forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=243211
(SIP keyboard staying on, SIP moving to the top of the screen, menu titles disappearing but not the background, etc.)
...in fact, that's precisely why I'm sharing this info with you, as this thread is 39 pages long and it's only towards the end that things become totally clear! I'll post again if there's any unexpected side-effects, I'm currently minimising BatteryStatus and I don't know whether this will
Good luck!
Carlos
NOTES / ADVANCED
=======================
A: If you want to make your screen even neater AND still overclock your Touch, then, in step 3 above, you can make TrayVisible=0 then you can minimise the BatteryStatus plugin and it won't show up on your today screen. (right click on batterystatus icon, choose 'show rows -> minimise') I haven't tested this properly yet.
B: If you want to explore hiding the Start Menu, feel free, it looks superb when you first do it, but then I have found that the HTC biotouch (spinning cube) automatically re-instates the start menu bar when it's deactivated each time.
C: Please note, this program ( tt2.exe) DOES NOT TOGGLE, even though it's called that! Again, it's a 39 page thread, I warned you...
D: You can also run TT2.exe with a -config option to avoid editing the registry, but this would actually make the above even more long-winded to explain to any n00bs.
E: A nice new HTC wallpaper is doing the rounds without the logo. (As you can see from my screenshot, it's mis-positioned with the extra screen space) See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319830
F: Vijay555 has been meaning to release a new (non-alpha) version of the software for some time, but sounds pretty busy. He seems like an all-round splendid guy though and I'd like to thank him for this software and his continued postings/programming.
I have the HTC X7500 WM6 and I've been desperate to make it works.
I've been trying other version from the 40 pages thread, so I'll try this one and I will post result.

Good luck! The honest truth is that after I'd posted this, I discovered a couple of bugs that appeared in soak testing. I gave up in the end - it worked 90% but I would still occasionally get conflict, e.g. the SIP keyboard would appear at the top of the screen sometimes and only a soft reset would put it back where it was meant to be!

Yep I confirm that, SIP keyboard is there, and sometimes as well softkeys stay there after softreset.
Well actually for me it's even worse, it's hiding the system tray (the bar just above the softkeys bar) where we can add shortcuts icons and keep the softkeys bar enabled..
Im disappointed but thks for vijay555 for all the efforts
Perfect... without HTC Logo is even better...
Thanks Carlos,
I've just installed and its working fine. With the clean background from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319830 looks even better.

See my original post, have you tried setting TrayVisible=1 in the registry, this should show the system tray.
I followed exactly what u posted, it displayed it correctly the first time, then after soft reset it was displaying only the softkeys bar and hiding the system tray bar
Thks anyway
How does this look on screens BESIDES the today screen? I have used other programs on different WM phones in the past and although the bottom bar disappears on the today screen, it is still on other screens.
Also, can you use the bottom of the screen or is it just dead space? Some of us have moved the HTC Home Plug to the bottom of the page and if it is just dead space, it is going to look bad....

The menu bar is visible on other screens, this behaviour is by design. I cannot see why anybody would want it invisible on other screens, as you normally need those softkeys for menus in most programs!
As far as I know you can use the bottom of the screen, it is not dead space. But why not try it out - it's unlikely to do any harm. You can always delete it from your startup directory to uninstall if you don't want it.

Use the HTC Home customizer to "unlock" it. Then you can move it around like normal.
However, it doesn't redraw correctly on the right side if you unlock it, and a scrollbar comes and goes.
i have a other solution!! PCM shrink installe it and your bar remove it s very easier! For become to the original config juste delete the programmz!!
won't stick
Hi..very nice and easy Zip File..just one problem: the toggle won't stick after a soft reset = one has to go into File Explorer..double click the Toggle File and only than the screen is "clean" again.
Any way to make the toggle "stick"?
I have not this problem! I install the cab i going on the explorer and today shrink and clik on after i reboot my pda ans the bar not appear ... You can try put a abbreviated of today skrink in WINdows/started for star the application automatic on windows sartup
the result of the appl:
I have this running at startup on my Tilt, works with screen rotations and everything! And the hard keys are still mapped to calendar and contacts for quick access, awesome.
Many thanks, couldn't stand those useless soft keys before.

Uknown Clock has appeared

E guys, another one for the experts :-D
I've been trying to solve this since yesterday.
(Refer to pics)
The red arrow is pointing to an unknown digital clock. I'm suppose to see the battery icon there, and I would like to have my battery ICON back please smiley hehehe.
When you click on the digital clock you get that second screen with the balloon message.
(Please refer to pics below)
Ive seen no configuration to bring back that HTC battery meter. There is although another battery meter with pocket plus, but I want to use the original one because clicking on it takes you to the WM battery ap whilst the pocket plus one does nothing sad
Last applications installed that I think mite have caused it?
- SPB Pocket Plus
- Pocket Infromant
But I cant find the settings on either of the two.
im not sure how to disable it but it looks like pocket informant.
How did you get that there? I want to disable HTC home and put that there but there's no option to! =( Lucky.
Go to the clock settings, on the last tab there is an option for this.
I dont know how it got there, it just suddenly appeared :-(
@****er: Clock settings didnt work for me, it wasnt even selected :-(
if it isnt what ****er suggested then you must have advanced config installed, its under the today section top item, show on title bar, battery or clock

Add icons to HTCHomePlugIn??......

I can hardly believe it, but after returning 4 different Verizon XV6800's, giving up and trying their "Glyde" and "Voyager".....I'm back once again to the Verizon XV6800. It's still the best device (IMO) despite it's weird glitches of turning on ActiveSync all by itself and still no flashing amber light to notify you of a missed MMS Guess I'll just have to live with those stupid oversights that Verizon and UTStarcomm are unwilling to fix.
Anyway, I digress. I have HTC Plus installed on my device and it works great! I also have the default HTCHomePlugin that came with the device enabled so it gives me the icons at the bottom of the screen for "Adjust Backlight", "ActiveSync" and "Flashlight".
I would like to add additional icons to the HTCHomePlugIn at the bottom of the screen WITHOUT making any other changes to my Today Screen ('cause I'm happy with the way it looks), but I have no idea how to add any other icons. Anyone able to help me with doing this?? Thanks.....Mark

Go to the HTC Home folder on the root of your phone and copy the entire folder to your PC. Open the folder and browse around. Open what you want to edit in photoshop and edit/overwrite. Copy those changed files to a new folder and then transfer to the HTC Home folder to overwrite those files. NOTE: turn off HTC Home from the today screen when trying to overwrite files.
EDIT: Sorry realized this was the plugin, not HTC home.

I think you don't have an answer because it's not a big deal.
So what, there are 2 different wallpaper settings. A lot of people prefer it that way. Why do you only want 1? (Incidentally, 63 <> 256)
why cant you just set the same wallpaper for the 2 screens, problem solved! why do you have to turn sense off by the way?

I want use programs that will change my wallpapers automatically every hour taking each time new wallpaper from my folder.
I tested every existing "wallpaper changer" for windows mobile. None of them is able to change HTC HD2 "Lock-Screen" Wallpaper!
And this is because of that stupid HTC Sense, which is trouble for many programs that work just perfect on other Windows Mobile operated devices.

There's nothing stupid about the Sense UI having its own wallpaper. I don't have any other applications that assume the same wallpaper as windows. Do you? The lock screen is part of the Windows UI, not the Sense UI. Hence, different wallpaper. Not stupid - normal.
Also, "trouble for many programs that work just perfect on other Windows Mobile operated devices" just sounds like you're *****ing. You need to be more constructive in your critiscism, but expressing details in your issues, and how you would like them to be resolved.
Look for an app to change the Today wallpaper. I'd be really suprised if there isn't one. This will change the lock screen wallpaper. You'll need to use both apps, unless someone is interested in making something specifically for you.

No. You're wrong. As I researched this problem with one developer of "Wallpaper Changer" - HTC HD2 has it's own title of "Lock-Screen wallpaper". On all WM devices Lock-Screen / "Start-Menu" wallpapers has title like "stwater*.gif". On HTC HD2 this file has title "HTC_stwater*.gif" with that "HTC" prefix. It is that HTC Developers were too excited customizing WM 6.5 on this device, because on other WM 6.5 phones "Wallpaper Changer" program works fine. And there are many such customized things which made HTC programmes. Now this powerful phone gets useless as many programs doesn't work properly on it.

I am trying to help you - stop being an idiot.
Do you know how to change the today wallpaper without using a piece of software? If so, do it. You will see that it is also the same as the wallpaper in the start menu, and, if you bother to try it and then check, turn off sense and you will see it is the same as the today wallpaper.
Stop being so offensive and grow up. This is a forum, not a playground.
Actually, I've just reread the whole of this thread, and I can see what the problem is.
You're a newb.
Here's some facts for you. These are not debatable - they are facts.
There is a wallpaper setting for the HTC Sense Home tab.
There is a wallpaper setting for Windows (including Today, Titanium, and the lock screen.)
There is no such thing as the "HTC Lock-Screen Wallpaper" - that actually point to the one just mentioned in point 2.
I tend to be as helpful as possible on this forum. I've been here for over 18 months and I've helped a lot of people with problems on their phones from big issues, to tiny insignificant things (my very 1st post was one that was an answer to someone's question!) I'm on my 3rd Windows mobile phone, and yes, it happens to be a HD2. I've had it for 7 weeks now, so I'm quite familiar with the extra features that weren't on the TouchFlo interface of the Touch HD, or the Touch Diamond.
Despite what you think, I do know what I'm talking about. You're just not listening.
So, with that in mind, will you please stop being so aggressive and explain why you don't understand something I've said. I am happy to help, but I'm not a saint, so stop being offensive and we can be friends

I know how to change every wallpaper type ( Home tab, Lock-Screen & Start Menu ) using standard settings. I know that turning off Sense and changing today affects on all three wallpapers and it's one file. If you were a bit more attentive you'd saw that I'm looking for a way to change "Lock-Screen" wallpaper (with turned on Sense) using external program. And I also mentioned that all such programs are able to change only Home tab wallpaper, even if Sense is turned off.

Stop being aggressive and listen, if you want help!
Okay... johncmolyneux is right. There's only two kinds of wallpaper: One for Sense, and one for the lockscreen and start menu.
The one for Sense is called "Home tab wallpaper".
The one for the Lockscreen and start menu is called "Lock screen wallpaper".
If Sense is turned off, the the Today Screen wallpaper is the same as the lock screen and start menu wallpaper.
The Today Screen, lock screen and start menu wallpaper is the file "stwater_480_800.png" in your Windows directory.
OKAY, that's for the explanation. NOW.... WHAT programs have you tried? I will have a look at what they actually do, so that I can find out what's wrong.
However, it is clear that the programs can only change either the Sense wallpaper or the lock screen wallpaper, because they are different files. Afaik there is no program that changes both at a time.

The programs you used change this file. That means those programs change the wallpaper for the lock screen AND the start menu AT ONCE, because it's the same file.
However, the change only takes effect after a soft reset. That's why your programs don't work and it also means that what you want is not possible.

When I tried to change Lock-Screen wallpaper (which is same as Start Menu wallpaper), it was set to default file: \Windows\ HTC_stwater_480x800.gif. It looks like a blue gradient default wallpaper. And unfortunately it stayed after soft-reset I asked other HD2 users and they had the same result.
If I'm able to change Lock-Screen wallpaper from "Settings" without soft-reset, maybe there should be possibility to do the same with external program and without soft-reset? When I manually change Home-tab wallpaper - it changes immediately, when I change Lock-screen wallpaper from settings - I see Windows Mobile "Loading" for couple of seconds. As I understand it means WM unlocks current file from being used by appropriate process and changes wallpaper. Then, maybe there could be possibility to unlock file from external program? I'm not familiar close to WM, but I guess some things that are done on Windows XP could be done on WM (here I mean only that well coded program could trick WM features) ? For example, in WIN XP I use great program "Unlocker" to free files from being used by running process.
Strange...
Why is it that so many newbies who come on here for help turn argumentative and aggressive? Is it something in the air they breath or what?
I appreciate that for some English is not their first language so some things do get lost in translation; however how the hell they expect help if they are giving it lip is beyond me.
There are lots of people on here, including me, who don't mind helping newbs as we were newbs once. Even though they post the same question a thousand times without reading or searching first, which is SO frustrating, we still try to help.
I suspect this thread will die very quickly unless the OP starts getting a little more friendly......
Just lighten up a little.

Okay, I had a deeper look into it, and this is how it works:
The HTC_stwater_480_800 file is in ROM. It is not the lock screen/start menu wallpaper.
The stwater_480_800.png file is the wallpaper. When you change the lock screen wallpaper in the settings, it overwrites that file.
If you set it to default, it takes the HTC_stwater_480_800 from the ROM, renames it (i.e. removes the HTC_) and replaces the stwater_480_800 file.
NOW...
...if you do change the wallpaper from the settings, everything is fine, it changes immediately...
BUT...
...if you replace the stwater_480_800.png file by hand, you need to soft reset for the change to take effect!
I don't know why this is, but this may be the reason why those programs can't change the lock screen wallpaper immediately. There must be a possibility, as HTC Sense IS able to change it immediately, but obviously, only replacing the stwater_480_800.png is not enough.
But anyways, the "Home tab wallpaper" (which is only for Sense) is still completely independent from the "Lock screen wallpaper" (which is the stwater file for the lock screen and start menu). As far as I understood, you want a program that changes both at the same time? I think there is no such program at the moment.

Hehe, see that if I didn't post my second aggressive bumping reply, this thread would have been lost deep in the forum without any answer at all. Old threads usually are ignored.
I just feel that he wanted to show off with his knowledge, call me idiot, newb or whatever and didn't carefully read my answers or explained it in manner that it looked so. Maybe I also explained my question not correct and we misunderstood each other.
seed_al just explained it in one post, so it's really looks clear. Laconic and effective.
