Z2 is it still a great phone in 2016 - Xperia Z2 General

Good afternoon
I have sat here my wife's old z2 with a cracked screen
I am thinkimg of getting it fixed for around 45pounds and using it as much primary phone.
Currently I have an meziu mx5 but I am getting fed up of waiting for updates etc also a quite dodgy company.
The mx5 has great potential but the 20mp snapper is quite poor. Screen on time I get roughly 4 hours
My question is will the z2 receive marshmallow
Is the camera still good can I use the 20mp in auto mode
What is the screen on time big deal for me
What would you do
I could sell mx5 for 150pouds and get z2 fixed for 45pounds
Is the screen as good as the original I will be getting it fixed off eBay.
Any ideas of protective cases, tempered glass etc

Fix it for me this will be my last phone works perfectly I am fully satisfied of course if it will not broke or something ^_^

MX5 and Z2 have the same camera sensor- IMX220, so they are making almost the same photos.

Yes but meizu algorithm isn't as good as sonys
Reason I bought the phone
Will the z2 be compatible with the upcoming vr from sony
Also will it get same updates

45pounds!?!? Why pay that money when you can buy it from aliexpress and fix it yourself?

Z2 is the best phone i have used till now. I havent used the lates flagships but for the feel in the hand the z2 is superb, not as blocky as it looks, pretty goot with onehanded usability, too. And above all it really feels like an expensive and high end device. Specs are decent and can push ALL tasks that you would do on a smartphone, phone, chat, internet, gaming, heavy gaming, video...Softweare is also the best IMO, almost stock android but not so naked and featureless, its smooth with no lag. Battery life is really good, depends on you usage, but 6,5 to 7,5 hrs of SOT in one day on wifi, a little less trough course of two days. But nothing less than 5,5h with heavy use (excluding the heavy gaming non stop). If you get good screen replacement then its your best bet. MM is coming for sure and looks very promising, 3 gigs of ram ensure good operation of all apps for the forseable future. Z2 will last you and get you trough the day for atleast 1 year forward, maybe more if you dont need to live on the cutting edge of smartphone craze.
Added screenies, this is w/o stamina mode, it kicked in at 5%. With stamina mode it is possible to get insane SOT over 8hrs with moderate usage.

5.5 HR sit wow at least can everyone confirm this
Also I would fix it myself but I'm useless

Like all phone from first Xperia Z or even S.
After that time all the more powerfull phone is matter for tech addicted, not real difference for normal usage users.
Btw i still have my Z2 and enjoying it.
I can swap it when Z6 arrive..but first i want to see

Coming fron S2, s3, s4 then Z2, I recently bought an S6 thinking i needed an upgrade.. I think the design of the S6 is cool, but when I tried using it for 3 days, it doesnt feel right. Battery is so bad (normal user here and phone is rooted). I havent tried comparing the camera but Z2 photos are not bad as well.. I decided to stick on Z2 until I can get a Z6 soon, and hopefully has AWS frequency which my network requires. They could make Z6 roundish than Squarish.

Could you please show me how you achieved this?

front Camera Too Bad Especially In Low Light

I don't know how about mx5, but I can still admit that Z2 is a great phone for great price.
The camera quality gets bad at night, but during the day the photos are very good.
And you can easily achieve 4h+ of screen time (as long as you're not playing games).
Of course it will also get marhmallow. There's already a "sony beta program", where Z2 is also included.
It's the best phone for me I ever had. I don't see any reason to buy Z5 or S6, if you can get 80% of their performance for 1/2 of the price.

I guess with smart battery management. I turn on sync, gps, bt and data services only when I need them, adaptive brightness is off, screen brightness is on 30% average, but I use my phone normally, no gaming though. Mostly on wifi. The trick is to let your phone cool down a little when it gets too hot, heat drains battery. Sth like 15 - 20min of usage, then 3 - 5min cooldown is ideal if you can afford it. Also you can set stamina mode to be only in "extended standby" mode whitch will turn off sync services when screen is off. Nothing more just normal to heavy use, short calls, IM, sms, snapping a lot of photos, web. Got 4.5 hrs sot on s4 and 7hrs on lg g2 with this type of usage on average.

Sure..z2 is still one of the best phonez now

[Q] Whats your N4's battery life?

I haven't bought this device. I am thinking to but battery is a big question for me because its non replaceable. I will buy a used phone so it is a issue for me. Can you guys tell me hows its battery life? and is 16GB enough? How much is user available?
just got it, you've got like 11.5gb available and battery is fine so far i haven't charged it in over 16 hours and I'm at like 40%

Thanks for reply and hows old your device is?
By the way hows its low light/night result of camera? I was reading on "Post pictures taken from your Nexus 4!" and many users have said it has bad quality? Or they really cant use camera? lol
Nexus 4 camera sensor is small , 1/4 " and it really takes crappy photos im low light

the phone is like 6 moths old but i got it yesterday, it was my moms, the camera is OK but you have to play around in the settings to get it right for the situation, id say don't take low light hoots if you don't have to but its not that bad at all for normal pics
Camera is ok...Not so good, but not that bad too, just ok.
About battery life, depends on your usage. Mine usually lasts for 12 hours, with 3g on all day, using whatsapp, tapatalk, chrome, sometimes playing games...
You can check
The great battery impression thread too.
— From my mako
Actually after the Google Camera update the camera takes decent photos, and after editing them with the built in photo editor they do look very good, as long as you know how to use it properly
Camera is really okay. It pales infront of current high end cameras like the one m8 or z3, but the shots are always satisfying. You really must know how to handle it.
My batterie life is also very good. It last at least one day with chatting, browsing, a tiny bit gaming, music and movies. On screen time always are 3,5/4+ hours. I think there is nothing to complain about.
i have the n4 since january 2013, and im getting less and less satisfied with the battery life.
im a heavy user, lots of browsing, listening to music on bluetooth, chatting, etc., and i used to get a day of use out of it easily, now i have to charge it to be able to pull through work and the usual evening beer.
i rarely get more than 2 hours screen on time, and im constantly on wifi or 2g, just a couple of times 3g, with about an average of -70dBm cell coverage.
every keep awake permission is revoked, and only a handful of apps get access to my location, so the phone is mostly in deep sleep.
average battery drain is about 2,9% according to system monitor for the last couple of days.
if battery life is important to you, id rather recommend the moto g.
Depending on usage and reception about 3-5h screen on time.

Its subjective
From morning to bed time if you use your phone actively throughout the day
or 2 days if you only make calls and listen to music

Battery Life

One of the most important features that I liked about the Xperia range is battery life.I am worried about the initial reviews that the Z5 has average battery life (comparable to the LG G4 ),please post your experience if you alrady have the phone and how it compares to the device it replaces .
Thanks
I charged mine at 6pm last night (UK Time) and haven't charged since and it's on 68% now at 09:23am - This is after a full setup and re-sync of all my stuff.

I don't think that is that good tbh, 32% drain and I presume that included some hours of sleeping also. Battery life concerns is one of the reasons I am waiting for the premium instead.
Talking of battery life and off topic but my mrs got a iphone 6s on friday and after setting the phone up she unplugged the usb from the laptop at 12.28am saturday morning (uk time) at 75% and she has used the phone for various things since then and the battery is still at 75%, 3+ days later its not normal.
I believe in Z5 battery, very good
My battery life doesn't seem great however it does charge really fast. My "opinion" cannot be used as comparison though because I am a heavy user with many apps. I came from the Xperia Z C6603 which I don't think the battery was that bad. Since I've had this I've not managed to do any extensive testing on the actual battery life and am currently using Snapdragon BatteryGuru.

fast charging doesn't really make up for good battery life I had the Z2 then the Z3 and there was a slight drop in battery life (and capacity) I read that the Z3+ had worse battery than the S6 which I currently have and I have to charge overnight and then at 2 pm o make it last a day .
good
good battery
In a day of average use.. Not constant game playing.. What screen on time do people get on a full battery?

So far unimpressed. I took it off charge at 7am. It's 3pm and I have 33% left. Comparable to LG G4 which was also poor. My old Z3 definitely lasted better. I hope after a few days the battery will settle and improve but I'm not holding out too much hope.
Strange how Sony is decreasing battery life with each new phone! They had an advantage over most phones with the Z2, Z3 was also good but not as good as the Z3.the Z3+ was average and it seems so is the Z5.

Dead after 9 hours with less than 3 hours SOC. Won't be keeping this phone as battery was one of the main reasons I bought it.

The A57's might not be as efficient, so the SD 800/01/05 devices have that advantage. When the A53 cluster is active drain should be better...but it's not clear how expensive (power wise) it is to constantly switch clusters. Also the faster GPU could be partly to blame if it requires more power than the previous generation. When Qual returns to making their own architecture with the 820 it seems like battery is one area that'll benefit.

Since being by my computer and having Pushbullet on I've noticed I've been getting "Verifying theme" notifications from "com.sonymobile.runtimeskinning.core" something or other popping up periodically. They don't show as a notification on my phone and this may suggest why I am getting almost constant wakelocks and appalling battery life. Hrm
On GSMArena Z5 Compact has slightly worse batt life than Z3 Compact (which was outstanding).
It's still great but it's a bit worse.
I assume Z5 will be similar story.
Probably nothing will come close to Z2...
@doministry, Before this thread becomes identical to all other lollipop running phones' battery thread, I'll just paste it here from Z3+ forum.
'Active mobile radio bug' of Lollipop is the main reason why 2015 phones' battery life took a hit. Wifi users won't be affected by this btw. Meantime, few things we could do to improve battery life
1. Always close all apps (from the MT window) before locking screen while you're on mobile data
2. If you're on wifi 24/7, turn off mobile data permanently
3. Use 2.4GHz Wifi instead of 5Gz if possible
4. Make sure 'Screen' is on top of the battery usage list. Otherwise, you got radio active bug or something else that's draining battery. That said, 'cell standby' tops my list occasionally if I don't use it for a long time. It doesn't affect heavy users but Sony needs to work on that for Z3+. Hopefully, it's better on Z5 out of the box.
5. For past Xperia owners, Z5/Z3+ screen is much brighter than Z2's, Z1. If you leave the brightness slider at 'zero' with adaptive brightness on, it's still much brighter than Z2. Stick to lower manual brightness to get Z2 like battery life.
6. Root
Thanks. What I was talking about is rather the endurance the device gives while performing
certain actions.
It's clear from Z3Compact/Z5Compact comparison that 3G Talktime got increased.
The rest got decreased.
Anyway thanks, I use some tricks and my batt life is great.
I think it's irrevealent to compare z5/z5c battery life to their predecessor'one until a few updates from sonymobile have rolled out. As a z5c owner, I can tell you that stock rom is laggy and full of bugs. However I'm impressed how Sony managed the 810 that provides solid performance (except in the UI atm) without overheating. Web-browsing and games are smoother than my z3c. The z5c remains definitely a bit warmer than the z3c, but less than the galaxy s6.

In theory M should be out for the Z5 soon as it's already out on the Nexus
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I do not believe that updates make much difference .I had the Z2 ,Z3 and Z3+ each was a step backwards in terms of battery life .The Z3 was still godd but the Z3+ was worse than the Galaxy S6 with a smaller battery. The last phone I had that lasted a whole day was the Z3 ,if the Z5 is not at least on the same level I will pass.
Also I want a fully functional phone ,I do not want to turn everything off in order to get good battery life.

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact before depleting the battery.

Battery life on this phone is amazing.
Since it has the same 2700mAh battery as its bigger brother, it can easily last 2 days of average usage.
I'm currently typing this at 7pm, and my phone is at 71% battery, while I've been up since 8:30am
Checked the battery monitor on hidden menu and it states 2800mah (my currently battery % is 80)
how much you guys have?

2820mAh according to the service menu battery test, not bad.
Are you guys using Stamina mode? I am new to the Xperia phones and the XZ1 Compact is a first for me. I came to it from a Google Pixel because I wanted a smaller phone for better one-handed use and better battery life. So far, I'm not seeing much increase over the Pixel with my usual usage. I have only had it for a few days and have been ending the day around 30-35%. Phone idle and Google Play Services seem to utilize the most battery and my typical screen time in a day is around 1:45-2:00 hours.
I set stamina to kick in at 15%
I haven't reached that point yet, right now I have 25% remaining and already have 6.5 h of sot. I didn't do anything too demanding, but half the day the signal was rather bad, so in the end I gotta say this thing is a beast.
Not using stamina. Didnt like the lag on screen when stamina was on. on android is pretty good now with disabling apps on background...
i usually have 5 hours screen...

Modern Stamina is completely different from the original Stamina, which was awesome. Back in the golden days, it was actually able to effectively extended battery life without sacrificing overall performance.
With the introduction of Marshmallow however, Stamina essentially "broke" - there were overlapping conflicts with MM's new Doze feature, which in theory aimed to conserve battery in ways similar to Stamina but in reality didn't quite live up to its promise.
Since Doze is baked in to the OS and pretty much here to stay, Sony decided to kill off Stamina with the first few MM firmware releases.
It was eventually resurrected, but it has never been the same again. You can say that only the name lived on, under the hood it's two entirely different things.
Now that history lesson is over, back to your question. Stamina on the XZ1 Compact is just a combination of trivial battery saving tricks that may or may not actually save a significant amount of battery life.
The description in Stamina mode details the biggest battery eating features that Stamina disables, if you don't actively use any of them during normal use, it's likely that Stamina won't be of much help in conserving battery for you.
You'll probably save more battery by dimming your screen or disabling ambient light sensor.
Ultra Stamina basically turns your smartphone into a dumbphone to squeeze as much life as possible out of the remaining battery. Unless you're away from a charger for a long time and you absolutely need to make a phone call or text or whatever before you can plug it in, don't use this mode, it's horrid.
Thanks for the brief history lesson! I did notice Stamina mode left some to be desired with scrolling, primarily. After messing around with some settings and putting the screen to a dimmer level, I seem to be getting better battery life. Perhaps it has to do with a new phone and the software and battery need to "learn" each other? As it is, the XZ1C is already longer lived than my Pixel, which typically needed to be plugged in at least once to make it through the day. Honestly, I'd take a thicker phone with larger battery. A wafer-thin phone with the latest tech is useless if the battery is dead.
I use stamina the whole time. I've found the bottom stamina preset is the best for scrolling. It's barely noticeable over non-stamina. Also, I've disabled background data and set location to GPS only. I get about 8-9hrs of SOT.
This phone is a bit unpredictable. I was pleasantly surprised by the improved battery life earlier in the week, and now it barely lasts through my usual 16 hour day before getting into the red. This past Saturday and Sunday, I had about 4 hours screen time and the phone made it through my day with 43% left in the battery. Monday I got about 3 hours screen time and finished with just over 20%, and yesterday I wrapped up with 7% and only used it for 1:45 screen time. I haven't done anything differently or installed any new apps. The reception is a little worse at my office is than at the school where I teach part-time, but I don't think that should make a 30% difference in battery life. I still get full bars WiFi and 2-3 bars LTE, where at the school LTE is usually 4-5 bars. Funny thing is, I about double my screen time at the teaching job since students don't always need me so I'm browsing on my phone. At my office, I'm usually busy and don't touch the phone much at all, but these past two days I'm practically watching the percentage drop. Today, I'm off the plug for about 2.5 hours and already down to 86% with 5 minutes screen-on time.
I'm thinking there must be some background app or process running that is killing the battery, but the app usage shows "phone idle" as the highest power drain, followed by Google Play Services. I often like to keep the more "core" apps running in the background so they can pull updates, notifications, etc. so I don't have to constantly be pushing the phone to do them manually.

Maybe I should try stamina off with background sync disabled. The scrolling is smooth, but it feels like the display refresh is only 30fps, which still bothers my eyes.
Just surfing reddit and listen to Spotify. Wifi and bt 100% on.
Wow. 2 days of standby and 10 hours of screen usage?? How did you manage that? I'm happy with just one full day when I don't have to plug in. I've already turned off most location services and updates, leaving just essentials like e-mail and weather still on. I also used to have a live wallpaper, which has now been changed to a static photo.
I have uninstalled all Google apps besides: Gmail, Calendar and Keep.
I have uninstalled all the bloat experia apps including swift key. (see thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz1-compact/help/managed-to-hide-whats-app-root-t3681393)
I use a black wallpaper and also night-mode in chromium swe browser.
I have turned off 4G/LTE since it sux in Sweden. Use only 2G/3G+Wifi.
I use dns66 for Adblock.
I have no audio/video enhancements on.
I have set auto brightness to off (low light auto brightness sux on xz1c)
I use Pebble 2SE which uses BTLE (LowEnergy)
Perhaps a bit off topic, however I would like to know how is the auto brightness feature on this phone.
I have a soon-to-be-dead Z3 compact and I used Lux auto brightness on it since the stock one basically didn't do anything.

The auto brightness on this phone works well, even too well. Sometimes in certain environment, a little tilt on the phone will cause the brightness to adjust immediately. I would say it is the most sensitive auto brightness in all phones I've used this far.
Almost 3 days with 7+ hours of screen on time

Coming from a Z3 compact, I can't help but feel this is a huge step back in terms of battery performance. I am really, really disappointed.
Woke up today at 7:00 with a full charge, watched about 40 minutes of YouTube which took me down to 68%; now it's 3:30 PM, the phone has barely seen any use and the battery is at 52%. On the Z3c when the battery was brand new, with this kind of use I would still be around 80%.
I really don't know what to say This is now a one-day-lasting phone like any other.

That's disappointing. I've got a Z3C that I use very lightly, mostly just 10 minutes of web browsing, 20 mins on WhatsApp and a bit more general screen on time. Maybe 45 to 60 mins total per day. I still get 3 days of battery life from my 3 and a half year old phone.
I'm considering either a XZ2C or Google Pixel (2016), but not really sold on either of them, both for being larger and the battery life being poorer
xz2c upgraded to 5" full hd screen, that's why battery life isn't as good as z3c. you can't have everything unfortunately.
still, I'm very happy with battery life of this phone, i get easily through 2 full days with one charge, and 6 hours sot, average usage.
it depends from your usage pattern of course, btw with same usage i used to get half the battery life with my previous S7.

Yeah, I know the Pixel is bigger and older, but I'm not too concerned with the performance difference and the both have 4GB of RAM, which is more important for me. also wonder if my light usage could stretch the Pixel out to 2 days too.
For the Z3C, community support for ROMs was OK, but I expect the Pixel will have a larger community and will continue to get updates for a longer time.
I think the sensible thing is for me to stick with the Z3C until it breaks, but we don't always make the sensible choice...
light use endurance is pretty good of this phone. if you just bought the phone, don't forget that the battery might need some time to adjust itself. and in my case it needed to drain the battery with some unknown usage after a system update.
My light use endurance is great. After 1 & 1/2 days being off the charger & 1 hr of SOT, I still had 70% left. Blows my Unlocked Galaxy S9+ (965U1) away in terms of both standby & in-use battery performance.
To be fair on the GS9+, however, that phone is connected to a Gear S3 Classic 24/7.

I still have over a day left, aiming for 3 days at the moment.

Ya... it's a pity that the market apparently wants Full HD also on small screens. To me, dpi>300 doesn't make sense apart from VR (which I never use), but the market wants 430dpi+ apparently. Yes, there is a tiny difference between my Mi5S (428dpi) and my previous Moto G 2014 (294dpi) in terms of sharpnes - but I'd always take the longer battery life instead.

Hi,
I recently bought this phone and it's awesome but I noticed that when I unplug the phone from the charger, it drains quickly battery even in stand by. Right now it has 18 min SOT and it's 89% (most whatsapp). Not quite like yours. Since I did just 2-3 cycles, do I need to calibrate it? If so, how should I do it exactly?
Thanks a lot!

it's so quiet in here...mate 20 is under-rated
It's not underated but few people of xda would buy because of lock bl.. anyway expecting mine on friday..

Where did you get yours? Same situation here also from Norway. I find some on various websites but its only the 4GB model. Is yours too or did you get the 6GB one?
I got it a few days ago and I am seriously impressed overall, especially with the hardware.
Previously I had a HTC 10 which I loved dearly, but was betrayed by a fast degrading battery (see HTC 10 forum, 90% of threads are about it). It got to the point where i had to permanently dock the phone to a bank because it could no longer hold a charge.
This thing though, oh boy. The fact that I don't have to charge it for 2 days is enough of a reason for me to love it. I need to get used to how big phones are these days, I've already dropped it once trying to lock the phone with one hand starting with a grip on the upper half of the phone (I know, real awkward, had doritos grease on the other hand). I can barely toss a ball in pokemon go now because it's so weird moving my finger the extra distance. I've also had to scale down all the UI elements so my eyes can read everything more easily like my last phone.
It's a ton of fun though. I will be sure to look after this thing's health more than my HTC, with greenify and a native Android Oreo OS, I hope I don't have to change phones for a long time.
Best phone ever
Have been using it for 24 hrs now. Comming from a OnePlus 6 the battery is amazing and I love the camera! Great phone overall.
Yep, got one last weekend also (Midnight Blue) and coming from a 2 year old Galaxy S7 Edge I'm blown away by the battery life! I'm at 9h of SOT after 1 day and 19h off the charger and I'm still at 28% LOL! It's almost indecent, that's what it is! And this is just my first charge... I happily give up wireless charging for this kind of battery performance. The S7 Edge barely gets 4h of SOT and something like 30h before dying. And it's not just the battery capacity, it's also about the OS optimization which the Samsung messed up about 1 year ago.
Although still not a perfect device, it does some things so well (impressive battery, remarkable screen - I'm looking at it next to my S7 Edge and I can't believe it's an LCD!, tiny notch, superb - I'd say flawless - construction) that in my opinion brings it closer to 5 stars than to 4 stars

I agree, battery life is insane on this phone. I tracked my battery consumption for one month using AccuBattery. On average I had a 4% drop in battery life for every screen on hour. The corresponding number for OnePlus 6T was 7%. Everything on this phone is top notch except EMUI.

Yes, that's more or less what GSam Battery Monitor shows me, around 4-5% battery usage during screen on. At the same time I get around 4% battery drain per 48h due to wakelocks, mostly Play Store Services localisation (GPS always on).
Useful information about the 6T by the way. I almost got that one for the OS and the in-screen fingerprint scanner, but I couldn't get pass the much higher than average SAR value. I expected the Mate 20 to have better battery life than the 6T (even with its LCD screen), but I didn't expect it to be this good.

I actually think Mate 20 is superior OP6T in almost every way except the user interface. I bought a used OP6T since I was dissatisfied with EMUI on Mate 20. However, after using OP6T a couple of days I sold it and went back to Mate 20 for the following reasons.
- As already mentioned, the battery life is clearly better on Mate 20.
- Mate 20 is the prettier phone, smaller bezels and overall nicer looking compared to OP6T.
- Speed is more or less the same but I felt that Mate 20 was slightly faster when opening apps.
- The rear camera is slightly better on Mate 20. Probably due to the large 1.55um pixels on the main rear sensor on Mate 20. I also missed the ultra wide angle sensor on OP6T.
- I like the screen quality better on Mate 20. Blacks are deeper on OP6T due to AMOLED but bright backgrounds look better on Mate 20 and I also felt that the screen on Mate 20 was more crisp and vibrant.
- The screen size is clearly larger on Mate 20 due to 6,53 inch and 18:7 aspect ratio. The screen on OP6T is too narrow and do not feel that much larger than a regular 6 inch 18:9 screen.
The hardware design of Mate 20 with the UI of OP6T would more or less be the perfect smartphone.
I got this one yesterday, very good phone... Good price relation and a nice breezel....
