I came from a Nexus 6. Here are the issues I have with the axon 7 and why I am returning it:
-Screen is 5.5" Not 5.9" or greater like the Nexus 6. I thought I could get use to it and like the screen being smaller but I just miss a bigger screen. I wish for a Axon 7 pro or plus model that had a bigger screen.
-No water resistance or dust resistance (after 1 week I noticed the speakers were not as loud as my Nexus 6.. I took some air spray and sprayed air in the speakers of the axon 7 and the clarity came back... Annoying to have to do this all the time. The Nexus 6 didn't have this issue as it it dust resistant)
-No wireless charger. I love dropping the Nexus 6 on the wireless charger and picking it up with no wires.
-No on screen buttons. With on screen buttons I can customize the button shape, color, etc... More over can use pie which I love as this gives you MORE screen and hides the navigation buttons until you need them on the Nexus 6)
-Lack of roms. Unlike the Nexus 6 which has a HUGE dev community offering custom roms, the Axon 7 doesn't as not many know about Axon / ZTE.
**Side note. I am really loving the front facing speakers of the device. Like the Nexus 6, this device has true dual speakers and it's just great along with the AMOLED display like the Nexus 6 it has deep blacks. Does anyone know a phone that exists like the Axon 7 but also ticks the boxes I outline above?

I've had it for about a month already no issues here love this phone and no ZTE is not paying me to say this its a great phone for the price. flawed? yes but seriously what phone isn't? Just look at the Note7 which is the device I came from before the Axon7 and for the price I can't complain the specs are amazing camera isn't as great as Samsung S7 but its good enough for me.

Totally agree. I had a vzn s7e as a daily driver. Now I split the duties depending on what my day consists of. Like many have said, is the phone perfect? No. Does it have flaws? Yes. But for the price point, specs and the POTENTIAL development. I believe the thing many people are having a problem with this phone is being patient!(I'm guilty of it myself)

But not all chinese versions using screen button?
Which one should i get? Please help me decide. I will be using it on ATT network. I am coming from the note 7 so need a phone that performs as well. How easy is it to root this phone? How is battery life and performance?
If root and custom roms are important go with the Oneplus. If you need it fast don't get a Oneplus, it will take a few weeks to arrive
Root is fine, very easy to root and make root changes persist. Xposed works perfectly too. The device is just gorgeous and it definitely outspecs the Oneplus 3.
However, for custom roms, you'll have to wait a few weeks more but the stock firmware is alright ( better than samsung's laggy note 7 ux by miles.) so I'm pretty sure you'll be satisfied with the axon 7.
Thanks guys. I think I am going to order it from amazon. How is it in direct sunlight. I know the note 7 gets really bright.
Actually Roms are not that important but root is. I hate all the ads with the note 7. I want my adaway.

That's the US version, no problem rooting and unlocking at all.
For the brightness, I haven't had any problems reading the screen in direct sunlight, not as bright as the Note 7, but since the viewing angles are amazing on the Axon 7 it can do with the lower brightness
Now you just have to wait for it to ship to you, that's the hardest part

So you guys are able to unlock the boot loader too?
A few answers for OP
Axon 7
1) Bootloader
It is possible to unlock the bootloader both on US and EU versions of the phone.
However, "official" unlock is offered by ZTE only for US version.
Unlocking bootloader voids warranty. However, as XDA has provided tools to lock and unlock the bootloader, it is unclear how you would get caught.
2) Root
Root available. Regardless of whether your bootloader is unlocked
3) Roms
A version of CM 13 is being developed for Axon 7. Unofficially as of yet.
ZTE has talked a good game about assisting community development but we do not have a lot of concrete evidence thus far
OPO3 vs Axon 7 [strictly IMHO]
OPO3
better camera
more RAM (6GB)
ever so slightly faster fingerprint reader
Advanced ROM development
DASH charge is faster than Quickcharge on Axon 7. But DASH charge is a proprietary standard and thus cables and chargers are more expensive and difficult to obtain
Axon 7
Higher resolution screen
Longer battery life
Front stereo speakers
SD card slot
Internal DAC for higher quality music
Dual sim
Distinctive form factor (this is subjective of course)

Yes it can be unlocked now using TWRP without contacting ZTE. See thread in dev forums.
I chose the Axon 7 over the one plus for better screen, micro SD, dual front facing speakers, and fingerprint on the back.

What phone did you come from? How do you like it so far?
I had iPhones, one plus one, moto g 2015, Honor 5x, then this. I love this phone even though it costs twice as much as my 5x. I'm rooted with adaway. Bootloader locked.
Hello guys. First of all if a similar thread like this is has been created then I apologize. I'd just like to get your thoughts if getting a new Mate 9 over a discounted Mate 8 is worth it given the differences.
I'm will be upgrading from a Note 3 btw and I can't go back to a smaller screen. The Porsche design of the Mate 9 is out of the question.
Things I'm considering:
1) Design - This is subjective for me but I honestly prefer the sharper design of the Mate 8 over the more rounded design of the Mate 9. Admittedly though I haven't held the Mate 9 personally to know what it feels like; I've only seen pictures and videos.
2) Camera - Is the dual Leica camera setup of the Mate 9 that much better than the Mate 8 and its corresponding image quality also that much better? I don't really care about the lack of 4k of the Mate 8.
3) USB type C - Am I gonna be missing something with the Mate 8 being stuck with usb 2.0?
4) Performance - I mostly choose to play games with good graphics on my phone. Is the Kirin 960+GPU that much better than the 950+GPU? For those with the Mate 8, how's the performance so far since you've bought it?
5) Audio - From the Pocketnow review, they claim that audio volume of the Mate 9 via its headphone is severely lacking. I plan on using mostly bluetooth headphones moving forward so how's the volume of the Mate 8 so far?
That's about it.. Hopefully I can get some replies. Thanks guys!
If you already have the Mate 8 then its definately not worth to upgrade, because the camera in the mate 8 is enough for daily usage. if you wait for andoird n the performance of the kirin 950 can handle most of todays games easily. for audiophiles you better buy a htc..and the mate 8 is way cheaper and bigger
It's a pretty minor upgrade, not worth the current premium over the mate 8 although you will get updates a little bit longer.
If you want a good audio phone you can do great with an Axon 7 which isn't even that expensive. There are various Android tricks with root to boost volume I believe.
No point in caring about usb c. All it really means is your old cables won't work.
The Axon 7 would've been great if they released a version with bigger screen. Anyway thanks guys for the input. Haven't been able to check out all the threads but are there still lingering issues with the Mate 8 like with notifications and doze having conflicts and the like?
I guess the guys above didn't bother to read your post as you said you have a Note 3.
I would choose the Mate 9.
No. 2 & No. 4 are no contest, the 9 is considerably better in those areas.
Different Mate 8 Versions, compatibility?
I would like to tag onto this thread, since i'm looking into a replacement for my Note 3 as well, and I really like the Mate 8.
I always bought my devices through my provider (AT&T) but because of the troubles with locked bootloaders and limited development I decided i would buy my next device unlocked.
What is important to me is the freedom to switch (GSM) carriers, large screen, and the freedom to customize the device through xposed/custom roms. (don't care much for gaming, camera quality etc, but love the large screen to browse the web, watch video, lower DPI)
Looking on Amazon, i can find a unlocked Mate 8 ranging from $367 up to $510, i'm leaning to getting the "cheapest" one: Huawei Mate 8 32GB 6-Inch 4G LTE Factory Unlocked Smartphone - International Stock No Warranty (Space Gray) hxxp://a.co/8WgbFbA
I understand this has only 3GB memory and 32GB storage, but I (think I) can live with that, my biggest concern would be compatibility with the Mate 8 development on XDA.
Can any of you guys say anything about that ? are the different versions of the Mate 8 so close they are interchangeable, or are there things to watch for?
Thanks in advance....
Hey man, I bought my mate 8 from that exact link and i can tell you that it is compatible with the xda mate 8 posts here. The model that was shipped to me was L29C636B180. I just rooted my phone a few days ago and it is working great! I am also upgrading from a note 3 att haha
It's difficult for me to handle mate8 with one hand. I do this with my pinky finger at the bottom of the phone (the phone is standing on it. The edge of the mate8 hurts my pinky.
Im not sure about mate9 though. Just wanna tell you my experience.
Sent from my HUAWEI NXT-L29 using XDA-Developers mobile app
As long as you get an L29 model you should be fine. People tend to get the Mate phones generally to run stock, there's a lot less flashing and custom roms than most other phones out there.
Ended up getting a Mate 9 recently. Beautiful phone. Main differences are mostly the processor, camera, and newer Rom. It's the best phone I've owned but it's fairly subtle of a difference from the mate 8.
If you play games and take a lot of photos yes, or if you are very picky of speed when web browsing etc you will notice a difference of course. Personally I will wait a little bit. I want my next phone to be bezelless and there is a few ones that are rumoured to come soon.

Good Deal Sir...
You will not get the same Developer Support you had with the Xiaomi.. but I feel this is the 1st phone I've owned that does not required Root Access..
I personally don't see any apps that I would use that I'm not using right now without root.. Now A Days, with No Root Adaway, Themes with Customized Theme Managers, Extreme Battery Saving options, Screen Tempeture adjustments, DPI adjustments, Floating Docs etc.. nothing else is needed.
It's a new day.. times have changed.. Customization as well as Personalization can be had right out of the box.
Enjoy Your 7X Man... You scored a great deal.
I've rooted mine. But I agree I always had to put cyanogen or lineage to replace MIUI but with this EMUI its nice and with root it fills in a few gaps that a full Lineage would provide.
If OpenKirin team release AOSP or lineage I probably won't replace EMUI

Hey Kiran.. Hate To See You Go...
But.. I understand why you are making the switch to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro.
YES.. in time..( you'll still need Kernel Source or a port of Project Treble ) Developer Support will outstrip the 7x 5 to 1...
There Really Is NO Guarantee The 7x Will Get Anymore Than Base Support.
It's funny how everyone just assumes...
People rooting their devices left and right... throwig their warranty out the window and don't even have a stock image to flash should they need it.. or like you are ready to move on from it.. and need to return it to stock.
At first, I thought root and rom for the 7x was still the way to go..
But this is 2018.. And if a person does their research, they'll see there is NOTHING one can't now do / have with the stock setup that a Custom ROM can do.. Especially when it comes to the 7x.. Outside of just being different to be different.. ( And YES That Is What XDA Is All About )
I wish you all the best with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro.. That Snapdragon 636 is GUARANTEED to get LOTS of attention.
For Me *100% Stability & Functionality* are the PARAMOUNT requirment at this stage of the game.
I did not pay hard earned dollars to see Exclamation Screens & "Android has stopped unexpectedly" Screens along with hearing there's a fix coming for this and a fix coming for that...
No Thanks.
Only stock ROM's (even debloated.. don't really care for Deodexed.. slows things down just a wee bit..) are the way to go for the forseeable future IMO..
Again especially with the 7x.. it's just feature rich right out of the box..along with so many mods now that don't even require root.
It's been weeks now since the 1st B192 (Face Unlock / AR) update was released.. and only 20% of the planet has gotten it.. at this pace.. full rollout of B192 and EMUI / OREO 8.0 won't be completed until Mid / Late Summer.
Anywho..
Goodbye & Goodluck with your Xiaomi Mr. K !

Hey Kiran.. 1 Question Sir,
Did you root? if so, are you going to sell it as a "Rooted Device" ?
And... If you did root.. don't you have to go through some proceedure with Honor to get a code to unlock the bootloader? so now there is no warranty.. and it's been Permenantly registered with Honor as a unsecured device?
Just wondered if facing these possible conditions, will it cause you to lower your selling price if selling publicly.
Thanks if don't mind sharing.. Feel Free To P. M. Me If you Like...
Hello folks.
I'm looking to replace my current cell phone. It needs to be an unlocked CDMA (Sprint) phone. Things that are important to me:
high quality screen
processing power
decent storage
Things that aren't that important to me:
camera
I have a price limit of $150. Given the above, I am looking at:
Moto E4
Galaxy S5 (refurbished)
Galaxy J3 Emerge
Moto G4 Play
All of them have 5" screens, but the S5 has the highest resolution (the rest are 1280x720). The S5 also has the highest clock rate.
My concern is that the S5 is using technology from 4 years ago, while the rest are more recent. Should that be a concern, or is the S5 the best option here?
Thanks!

in my opinion, for this expense and one of the best!
I use a Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo and everything works fine.
2 weeks ago there was an update for the S5 over OTA. It is still alive and good.
In USA the normal S5 is still a smartphone that is one of the bestsellers.
I have no need to get another phone.
And the original S5 is better than my neo.

Amoled screen, wireless charging, fingerscan...16mp cam..
Put LOS or RR and youll get the best deal...
Or try a xiaomi mia1
Hello, had a galaxy s5 for around 3 years. My unit had a bit of a network issue, which sullied my experience, so be careful when buying a refurb!
Also, if processing power is important to you, you should note that it has constant slowdowns/stutters and, though not as often, crashes. It also heats up pretty quick and has mediocre battery life, draining pretty fast with any decent usage. The chipset really does not hold up compared to mid range chipsets now imo. Near the time I upgraded, it became nearly unusable for a bit whenever i turned the wifi on, though a factory reset and a sparser app library has alleviated the worst aspects of using the phone. It might be powerful specwise, but in irl use I find newer midrange chips outperform it in day to day use.
I recently upgraded to a redmi note 5 (china) and it was an upgrade in every way. From build to smoothness to battery life (and both cameras but you don't care about that). It also has the 6' display while retaining the same width as my s5, thanks to the 18:9 display. The aspect ratio is great in all apps that aren't games and in general UI use. It also has oreo out of the box and will get updates in the future, unlike the s5.
The redmi 5 plus(china) could also be a replacement that's cheaper, but I can't vouch for the screen on that one. The redmi note 5 has a bright lcd that looks really good. It's not amoled, but the transition hasn't bothered me at all, it's quite excellent! I've gotten compliments on the screen from many friends who have seen it in person as well.
So, yeah, look into the phone and see if your budget can be adjusted. Shoot for the 3/32 GB which is a steal imo. Oh, and it has a micro sd card slot, just like the s5, so storage won't be an issue. Another plus with these phones is that they actually have a fingerprint scanner that's not trash - another thing from the past that does not hold up.
I looked up the prices for these phones and they seem to be out of the 150$ budget, so, if the budget is rigid you might want to look into the redmi note 4, which can be found for 160$ and has all the same internals as the redmi 5 plus. I cannot vouch for how good the screen is, but it's 1080P IPS LCD. I would personally consider it a better phone to buy than the Galaxy S5 as well (working fingerprint scanner, larger screen, equivalent if not better chipset usability wise).
Anyway, I'm not really as knowledgable as most people in xda but I am a s5 owner, so I figured I'd chip in and try to help.
While S5 is still a nice phone, it is not worth buying one at this time. The best option would be to get current/last year mid end phone. Look at the local market websites, maybe there are good deals. Xiaomi redmi 5 plus is nice phone for low price, also redmi note 4 is nice phone too, you will get better peformance than S5, or at very least the same, more ram, much better battery life due to bigger battery and better chipset, you will get android updates.
S5 is still a great phone.. Do not buy refurbished.. you can find great deals on Ebay.. My cost $110 no dings, or dents or scratches.. Phone actually had very little call time on it.. Moto's IMOP are junk.
Hi ,
I personally think you should go for a newer phone like Honor 8. The main problem i would have with an S5 is the fact that it only has 16GB internal memory. Apart from that it is still a great phone.
With those 16 GB you will always struggle if you want to install many applications and keep Whatsapp data on your phone.

It does support SD Cards up to 128 GB though. I'm a kinda heavy user and never had problems with storage, always around 3-4 GB free in internal. Though I did put my games on my card obviosly (there was some app that does this, I forgot name).
i picked mine up monday for 45$. cracked rear camera glass. still takes photos fine.
anyway, i love the thing. i went from an s7 to an iphone 7 then to and old moto then to this. i love the effing thing. i get 2 days in low power mode with the original battery. im hunting for a parts phone now.
the s5 has issues from what ive heard but so far, im running fine.
After 2 weeks using the S5 of my wife I have to reverse my opinion. I installed latest lineageos 14.1 on it and it works like a charm. With lineageos there is still a lot of internal memory left for apps. Bluetooth which is often a problem for custom roms seems to work pretty well.
I've actually recently bought an S5, and although it is not the best option, the support for it has been huge over time and its still going on with amazing roms like AEX or CrDroid.
The only part I dislike is the storage, because yea 16GB are little to me. And the fact that it is refurbished is good contrary to what people assume, because, then that means its already fixed, you wont have to go through that pain as you would with a new one waiting to fail, that's how it is, you have more chances of a new one having issues than a refurbished one because that one already had them and its already fixed. On the other hand, "refurbished" doesnt always mean "it broke and we fixed it", usually its because people return it to the store, the package is open, they cant sell them as new, even if theres nothing wrong with it, it automatically falls to the "refurbished" category and not many people think of that.
Now, the Moto G4 is actually a better option, it has a good performance, but you should opt for the Plus version with 32GB internal
So, I'd recommend the G4 Plus, if you cant buy that, then the S5 is the way to go
S5 is still going strong.
I would not change it, but I need a dual SIM phone now.
So if you can get one, go for it.
However, I am not aware of CDMA capabilities or tested it, sorry. I have European model...
My uncle gave me his old S5 back in January to replace my dying S4 LTE-A, and with LineageOS 15.1, it feels like a brand new phone
im now rooted and running the latest lineage 14.1 and its awesome.
12 hours of battery, 4 hours of SOT and no issues. these nougat kernels are pretty nice. lol
people talking about storage, flash Lineage, have a clean sd card in and use the SD card as adptive storage. it shows it as all internal storage and works like a charm.

would you recommend the S5 as a backup to the Note 4?
I still have an S5 as a backup phone. Main phone Xiaomei Redmi Note 4x which I bought due to its superior battery life. The S5 imo is still good as backup phone and has an excellent camera (if you stick to TouchWiz based roms).

Thanks!

Hello!
I can definately assure you that:
A. Off the phones you have listed AND
B. Your stated price range
The S5 is your choice!!
It is amazing!! You will not be dissapointed! Unlimited battery life (multiple batteries), screen resolution, clock speed etc etc.
I am currently typing from one! Lol, I have the OnePlus 3 and my good ol' trusty S5! Some tips:
You stated about being older firmware (S5 is marshmallow) whilst others are nougat..... The S5 is one of the most developed phones ever! even still!!! In literally 5 minutes and little knowledge you can flash a custom recovery and then a custom ROM, no root needed. I have used the S5 since the early days and have used pretty much EVERY rom, honestly!
I can suggest resurrection remix as THE most customisable, they have features beyond any other! They have 100% stable nougat build and Oreo also, I use them both. In fact we have multiboot so can run 2 ROMs at once just choose at boot!
We have lots of kernels if you choose to root like myself, this way you can have 2.1 amp quick charge, boot windows or Linux on PC from phone, double battery time, gaming performance and over clocking to 2.84 GHz!!!! The phone is a beast!! It is reliable as hell too! I have had mine rooted for 4 years, overclocked and its given me no worries....And waterproof with a removable battery!!!!!!
Hope this helps, any questions at all please ask, happy to help
