Hi Everyone,
I have some experience of unlocking, rooting , flashing custom roms etc. but this issue has me really stumped and searching for the past couple of hours only led me to 1thread with a similar issue and no solutions. So here it is:
stock (4.3) N4 stuck in boot loop.
Fastboot oem unlock will not survive reboots, so I am unable to flash stock image back on my device.
Please Help with a solution to get this phone working again!
History:
Last night I turned on my wife's N4 (Android 4.3 stock) and put it on charge and walked away. This morning I found it is stuck on the "X" boot screen and red hot. I powered down, let it cool for 1/2 hour and then fully charged it (while off).
It will no longer boot, sticking on the "X" screen.
Booting into fastboot and choosing recovery leads me to android with red "!".
This phone has never been rooted, unlocked, custom recovery or custom ROM. ( I have however done all of this to my other N4)
Attempts:
Decided to wipe it and reisntall stock 4.3, lots of errors because it is locked.
So 1st step is to unlock, however whenever I do fastboot oem unlock I get the prompt about unlock and YES/ NO. I select YES and it successful erases and report LOCK STATE - UNLOCKED in red.
I reboot the phone into fastboot and LOCK STATE - ENABLED in green. Now stuck on what to do next.
(Secure boot - enabled).
Many thanks in advance.
Go into the stock recovery and do a factory reset. Go into the bootloader, choose Recovery Mode. When the dead android/red triangle comes up, hold power and tap volume up. Then select wipe data/factory reset.

Sorry, I re-read and followed your instructions :good:. I went pass the red "!" and did the wipe data / factory reset.
I rebooted into fastboot and issued
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
LOCK STATE- unlocked
I then rebooted again into fastboot
LOCK STATE- enabled :crying:
update:
I see errors after the wipe cache (successful)
E:failed to mount / cache (Invalid argument)
then lots of errors of failure to mount other cache sub directories and flies.

the android with the red "!" IS the stock recovery.
Summary so far:
N4 (stock) stuck at "X" screen.
booting into recovery and doing factory wipe + reset formats ok (but results in errors mounting cache)
"fastboot oem unlock" will unlock the phone for next reboot (google logo + unlock symbol) where it will then hang.
Subsequent reboots the device is locked (hang at Google screen withOUT unlock symbol).
Booting into Fastboot the device is locked again.
More help gratefully received.

it sounds like you might have an issue with the storage. at least when the storage goes bad, it follows the same symptoms. usually when the storage goes, people just find their device on X. if unlocking the device results to going back to locked after a reboot, it sounds like its actually not clearing the storage of the device, which would happen if the storage went back.

Thank you. I was reaching the same conclusion of a hardware issue. I'll arrange a warranty repair. I have 3 days left on the Warranty....

Yes, 3 days the other side and I would be mad.
oh well. Thank you everyone for the sanity check. :good:
Let m know if there is anything else I can try before it goes back.....:fingers-crossed:
I was just casually browsing my FB newsfeed when my S4 suddenly rebooted itself into this Android Recovery Mode.
I've been presented with the following 6 options:
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
Now I have no idea what most of those options with mean, so I tried to reboot the system several times but to no avail.
At this point, I was as desperate to wipe data/factory reset but even that failed.
I've no idea what to do as I cannot afford to have this repaired at the shop and I do not have insurance either. I'm not sure if dropping it recently, and breaking the volume UP has contributed to this. However, I can use the volume DOWN.

Try to Choose wipe cache and then factory reset. (THIS WILL ERASE ALL OF YOUR DATA INCLUDING YOUR INTERNAL SD CARD!) then reboot. If still doesnt Boot Flash the stock rom via odin.

I can't even get back into the android recovery screen now for some strange reason. It just flashes the white Samsung Galaxy real quick and shuts back off straight away. I've tried holding in all power combos (volume, power and home screen) to get in but that isn't working.
Edit: Okay. I managed to did that, then rebooted. It still starts back up into the recovery screen.
Also what does 'Boot Flash the stock rom via odin' mean? How do I do that? It is not an option on my screen.
Hi,
read this ( don't download anything from this post, it's not for S4 ! )
and this
I've checked out those links and it's far too complexed for me to understand. I've rang around a few local phone repair shops, and I've found a cheap quote for £10-15. I'd rather leave it in the hands of someone that knows what they are doing as opposed to risking it myself and cocking it up.
Thanks though.
Hi
Yesterday I got my axon 7 and it worked perfect.
Now I was wanted to change the language
So I downloaded as file that in my language
And I tried to install him .
And it worked by the adb software when the axon connected to the computer
So I went to the application in my phone and changed it to my language after USB debugging and developer option is worked
Then the phone was changed to my language and crashed
Now the axon just show the start logo and stuck in restart loop. so I tried to do few thing through your forum , but nothing helped ..
I also cleared the cache through recovery mode but it also didn't help
Its like the axon can't upload the operating system
Thanks a lot for who will help me here.
Also if it possible to send money through PayPal
And if it's legal I will send 30$ to the first that will help me solve this problem
Can you share the link to the file you downloaded ?
Is it compatible with the version of your phone ?
If you can enter in recovery it's enough to save it.

Yea the reason it happened is because I installed wrong adb language on my axon through USB debugging and external app
Now it possible to get into recovery
I just don't know what to do next
I tried few things but I always keep getting errors
You can try to install TWRP.
You will have a lot of option.
There is no option to restor the phone in the official recovery ?

I tried but after the install the drivers and cheak them in the device manager in my computer
The name of the driver was London marshesll something
And not what I saw in the guide - adb something
And it didn't recognize my device
I wrote also adb reboot bootloader
And it gives me error massage
I would be more then happy to give someone 30$ now..
Just that my axon will work
Did you root your phone, or just use ADB to sideload a file? If it's wasn't rooted/unlocked, then a factory reset should take care of it, as nothing done via ADB in that setup would impact the system partitions.
If you used the unofficial bootloader unlocking, then you'll have to follow other people's restore guides.
As @TeutonJon78 mention, a factory reset will do the job youan boot to stock recovery using adb
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Or doing it manually,
- Completely Power off your device
- Press and HOLD Volume UP and Power button.
- once you boot to recovery just use your volume buttons to navigate FACTORY RESET.
- Reboot System
holding up and down at the same time. get to fastboot mode it says secure boot: enabled and device state: locked. then i entered to recovery mode, and press on "wipe data/factory reset" (said it was successfully finished). then i pressed on "reboot system now". still its stuck on the zte logo

I will be honest man. I bricked mine too. Everybody has a step by step guide that they say works. I followed them step by step. They did not work. I have an RMA open on my phone and fedex is taking it to ZTE. Use the warranty. Until Zte puts online the full factory images for us to use there is no real way to fix these things.

Were you playing around with the rooting/unofficial bootloader? It should be very hard to actually brick the device without doing those things, and nothing a factory reset shouldn't fix.
If one's playing around with unofficial modifications, then they should take all precautions to make sure to know how to recover the device before hand. There's still a lot of moving pieces between potentially faulty TWRP bugs and no image file.

Did you let it sit for awhile? First runs after a factory reset can take up to even 10 minutes to boot fully. If it still doesn't work again, check if the recovery menu has another option like wipe cache/davlik, which maybe also needs to run if they have a bug in the recovery code about resetting data. If you hadn't touch anything using the tools on this forum, and none of the factory reset/wipe data/wipe cache stuff helps, then you probably have a faulty phone. Just sideloading an app shouldn't be able to corrupt a locked system partition.
The OP of this thread hasn't yet clarified if he was just sideloading files on a normal system (which should be totally fixable unless his phone has an actual flash problem) or if he had been tinkering with other things first.

Which guide did you follow? A Factory reset form within the stock software or stock recovery shouldn't cause that problem at all, as it should only be wiping data, cache, Davlik, and potentially the "media" portion of the internal storage.

Hey guys, my phone d802 just wont boot, it powers off mid boot, its not even a bootloop, I've tried everything and it just doesn't work, the only thing I want at this point is to recover my files cause I already got a new phone, here's what I've tried and failed:
1) Getting into recovery: I have TWRP installed I just can't get into recovery, I tried all the possible button combinations to get into recovery and no one works. The VolumeDown+Power (wait for LG logo) - release - press both Volume Up and Down -> gets me into the factory reset setting, but from here if I wanna proceed I have to delete all user data, which is exactly what Im trying to recover, so this wont work for me as I dont wanna save the phone just the files, some people say you can press power button 3 times from this screen to get to recovery but doesn't work for me.
2) Download Mode: I can get into download mode but then it says "Firmware Update" "Do not unplug the USB connection until blabla..." but it stays at 0% all the time. My pc recognizes the device but doesn't allow me to access files and ADB doesn't work from here, the LG Tool can upgrade the phone to OG firmware but the phone doesn't have enough storage for the update, so the tool prompts me to delete files, which I don't have access to, so im screwed.
HELP! I just need a way to get into TWRP so I can transfer my files to the PC after which I dont care if the phone explodes, someone help me!

That's not correct. Don't worry. After pushing the factory reset you can confirm it and the phone will boot into TWRP.

I know it will boot into TWRP after confirming it, but it will wipe all my data! and I dont wanna save the phone I wanna save the data! I need a way to get into TWRP WITHOUT ERASING USER DATA!
It just boots TWRP and nothing more. The reset will be skipped. I know the phone says it's going reset itself but it won't. Normally the factory-reset button combination opens the pre-installed recovery which performs the reset. But it's gone since you flashed TWRP. The factory reset can now be done with TWRP.

My HTC U Ultra suddenly froze past nigth, then it rebooted... and never came back, it won't go past the HTC logo over and over. I am not able to enter in recovery mode either, the only thing I can do is, by pressing both volume buttons and power, entering in what seems to be fastboot menu. In that state I can send the phone fastboot commands (no adb commands though) but If i try to wipe it it says "unable to do in s-on" or similar. I was pretty happy with this phone, and spent a few bucks in a new battery not two months ago.... anything I can do?
Thanks.
PS: I failed to state that the phone is stock, not unlocked or rooted.
If it has just happened out of the blue and you haven't been doing anything with your phone, have you tried a simple reset? (Press and hold volume down and power button until your phone vibrates - Usually about 20 seconds for me)
If not, and you are struggling to get into recovery etc, see if you can follow the method in the thread linked below if you are currently on stock rom!?
(Not sure if this would delete all your data or not, so perhaps only use as a last resort....)

Reset doesn't work, and the other procedure didn't work either.
If I leave it plugged to the charger, it will fall into an endless reboot loop. Sometimes (few) it will end up booting, but If i try to do something with the phone it doesn't respond and reboots again.
Thanks.
As you can send fastboot commands, can you flash a recovery.img (i.e. TWRP), and then wipe cache and dalvik/art to see if that helps, but if not, flash corresponding rom to that which you already have?

I tried that, too, but didn't work. If I do a fastboot devices it detects the phone, but if I do a fastboot getvar all it doesn't give me any information, it doesn't admit adb commands, when I try to flash a rom or a recovery, it fails, I suspect it needs to have the USB debugging enabled, but I can't enable it in this state.
As I said before, if I leave it plugged to the charger, It will randomly end up booting (it can happen in the third loop or in the 50th), but it will freeze or reboot again in few seconds.
Ah I see, if you haven't got USB debugging enabled then I am unsure how to help sorry. Have you got your media backed up, or stored on micro sd? If so, might have to bite the bullet and do a factory reset. Sorry I couldn't be of any help. Maybe someone else would be able to help you further?

The data is not a problem, every important file has been backed up.
Regarding factory reset, since the device won't go to recovery, I can't see how can I do it.
-- Edit --
I noticed that when the phone is cold, those few times it boots, it lasts a little bit more (a matter of seconds) until it freezes again, so I tried to leave it in the freezer for a few minutes, and tried to boot it, and had enough time to do a factory reset. The factory reset worked, because now, when it boots, it goes straight to the intial setup, but keeps hanging after a few seconds. I suspect that the internal memory was somehow damaged, I don't think there is much left to do...
Is it possible to skip setup in order to get to settings and enable USB debugging so you can install a recovery?
If you can, then it might be an idea to try performing a repair of all the partitions and install a fresh ROM... Just to ensure it isn't a hardware issue!!

I can't see how to skip initial setup... and I don't have time enough to go through it, the phone will hang in 30 seconds or less. At this point, I really needed a working phone, so I bite the bullet and bought a new one... I will deal with the old one later, or I might sell it for parts.
Thanks everybody for the help.
No worries, enjoy your new phone
