Hi Guys,
I am a new Note 4 user, I've had note 2 before. Recently I have used Z3, OneplusOne and S5, which in my opinion other than the S5, the phones were smooth and laggieness was non existence. I have since changed to the Note 4 and immediately I have realised that even in the kitkat (currently running lollipop) that the phone lags when changing between the programs, turning on the camera, or even after a picture has been taken it takes a while to get to respond. Hardwar-wise I believe the Note 4 is very respective and I can only blame this on the software. I have since upgraded to lollipop and I must say the performance is no different than before. Could anyone tell me without rooting and installing a modified rom, is there a way to increase the smoothness of the phone? it is because of the bloatware? how to de-bloat? or is it just how it is?

the better is a clean installation and after that come back and report any issue's
Thanks vagenrider but this issue was already apparent when I first used the phone right out of the box and noticed the lag.

I can say this,
that i had my Note4 (N910F rooted, stock Rom.) since October 2014 till now.
Overall i had little or no "lag" of note. (apart from Recent button plus an setting issue.. minor )
Over this period of time, if i found/noticed a bit of "lag" and i found culprit, causing the problem, I would uninstall app,
i also noticed, so far that it has always been a 3rd party (badly coded.. or on lollipop the app was not "playing" nicely.. etc etc)
So overall.... when i was on Android v 4.4.4 or now on Lollipop my device has been working fine.. battery use, been good, very, very smooth
So all i can say, if you have issues it is either you have a faulty device or an app/combination of apps causing lag.or setting issue
I have stated this, in many of my post that i have following devices.. on hand
Note 4, Note 3,Note 8.0 (tab) Note 2 and they all running fine..( 100% satisfaction)
Bottom line
is that i think i am in a good position to state that my Note 4 compares 100%plus, with my Note3(which is a very very, good device, smooth no lag, etc etc)
Above is just my opinion and i hope that you can sort out your device

I am having the same issues with my device. I've had it with both lollipop and KK. I've had multiple ROMS (all stock). I've done fresh installs, cleaned cache, disabled apps, and completely run with none of my apps installed. All the same issues, as you've mentioned. I'm thinking of returning my note 4 if they don't fix it by 5.1.1 or August. This device cost way too much for these kinds of issues... :-\

About debloating:
Without root you cannot really debloat the rom. You can only try to holding every app you don't need and drag&drop on touch wiz launcher and drag&drop it to "app details". New window with details will be prompted and you can delete or deactivate the app. This is everything you can do on stock to debloat.
About the main problem:
Also here without root and custom rom I could only suggest to try following:
Go to Settings app.
Scroll down to device information.
Tap few times (I think 5 times shoul it be) on build number to activate developer options.
Go back to main screen of settings, scroll down to developer options and open them.
So from here you can try to change following values:
- Force GPU rendering
- Turn off hardware overlays
- lower values for animations (all three) or just set them to zero if you don't need them. That gives really bounce speed (but mainly just for eyes, it doesn't really chages overall performance of device, just little bit maybe)
The nagtive thing of GPU and harware overlay is little bit higher the battery drain then usual.

Thanks for that!! I've just done the above, will use this setting for a while and see how it goes.
Hi Guys, after applying vbaschen's suggestion I believe the phone has improved in terms of window changing and smoothness in operation. Battery discharge hasn't affected me that much given the battery has always lasted an entire day of heavy use and I plug it in everynight. I would recommend this quick mod. Thanks again vbaschen.

Right on. I was going to recommend reducing the animation values as well as that is usually the case. Hope it helped!

I went for a completely different solution: the Note 4's Snapdragon cpu has the bad habit of heating up very quickly. Two or three minutes of heavy usage (gaming/emulation, or worst: piles of file operations, e.g. media scanner) make it shoot up to 85° C. To prevent serious damage, the cpu is then automatically scaled down to extremely low values, which results in abysmal performance. When I first unboxed my N910F and inserted my old sdcard, the media scanner went haywire because my sdcard was faulty (works alright in my old Note 2, but the Note 4 is picky). The phone quickly got too hot to even touch, ran sluggish as hell (AnTuTu scores between 24000 and 29000), then shut itself down. :crying:
After I had replaced the sdcard, things got better, but only when I didn't put too much load on the phone: 52000 AnTuTu points in the morning (first thing to do with the cold phone), but getting worse steadily until I couldn't score more than 43000 points.
Now, after a lot of fiddling and tweaking (Kitkat, Lollipop, Stock, Custom, CM 12.1), I finally settled for (Lollipop) Emotion Revolution R8 ROM along with the Emotion nightly kernel (r17) and (most important) Synapse kernel tweaker. Instead of overclocking the blasted thing even more, I actually downclocked it one step (2572,8 MHz). The result: a rock stable phone that actually runs way better than with the higher (stock) clock rate. The cpu hardly ever scratches 70° C, and usually stays around 65° C even when I run demanding apps like PPSSPP, Dosbox, or Real Racing 3 (don't like that one, but it beats the s**t out of the cpu - 85° with stock cpu clock!). AnTuTu scores reach about 51500 - almost as much as with stock clock rate - but several times in a row now, with no performance hit. So, even though the peak performance may be one or two percent lower, I can run my phone for hours without any performance drops. Oh, and it's good for battery life, of course. :good:
So, if you're rooted, you may want to give it a shot. :fingers-crossed:

Has anyone noticed heavy lag and freezing when using the phone. I don't have a lot of apps installed and i have disabled most apps that i don't use and the phone is still giving me issues.
Any advice is appreciated. [emoji4]
I switched from RAZR MAXX HD and this phone is a space rocket in comparison to my old Droid. Have you tried factory restore? Then if it lags - I would try to return it to Moto.
Check CPU utilization. Maybe some app hangs on. I've noticed that noozy (music player) lags like hell when album is over and player remains in notification bar.

I have the same problem, I tried to removing as much as possible automatic start calling but often when I uncheck the receiver this puts me "failed" in Rom Toolbox, I have tried Xposed Auto Boot module, but I do not feel that it works.
But for me, I have a lot of app instaled and my UI is very modified (Nova Launcher, Gravity Box, various Widget), so I know why he lag, but I still find it overheating lot and that's what most do slow.
Hi, I am having same issue. My configs was same as you, @Trinytix, but I had uninstalled all of them because lag issues. And now I continue to have same lag issues. When I use the standard cam for five minutes it become freezy and lag and sometimes I lose some photos. All the time it is burning. Just stops to burn when I leave it without work about 30 minutes. I think the problem is the snapdragon 810 but in other foruns some say that the problems with this processor was fixed.
I've been having similar issues, I got really into theming (using nova prime) the last couple of months and at the end of January the phone started to really lag hard. A couple weeks ago I stopped being able to open any apps other than the phone and google's messenger. I tried to factory reset from settings and could not (device gets stuck un the power down sequence), so I went the recovery mode route. reinstalled a fraction of my apps, put back a much stripped down version of my theme, and things were mostly ok, if a little laggy. However, the phone insisted that there was no SD card (internal or external) despite there being a 64GB card, which would sometimes show up when viewed in settings, some apps (podcast addict) were able to access the internal memory, but others couldn't (cameras, sms, photos, music). Yesterday the keyboard ceased to launch for more than a split second at a time, and would not take any input (you would not believe how infuriating this is unless you've experienced it first hand). In an attempt to regain some functionality I started uninstalling everything that I don't consider vitally important (bus app, podcasts, messenger) couldn't get through more than 1 or 2 at a time because multiple windows would stack telling me processes like "motorola" "android" and "media" had stopped. I did succeed in stripping away all the automation apps and theming apps (tasker, nova, icon packs, etc). I can't even place a phone call on the first try.
Oh and to add insult to injury I have to darned green lines about 0.5cm wide now.
Looks like hw problem or system got corrupted. Try to re-flash whole system but if is hw...
Having Lag & Heat Issues???
Is anyone having lag issue or any heat issues? I guess I have one of the problem notes as mine has extreme lag and heat problems. I have cleared all caches and have also factory reset several times. What's weird is that the lag will come and go, but it's there more often than not. Even scrolling in settings has the jitters.
Any ideas anyone. I might be better off going through the miserable process of exchanging through the mail.

You'll have to boot to safe mode to see if the issue persists. Also, make sure power saving mode isn't on (I've left it on before).

I'm experiencing the same issues - overheating, slowing down, serious lag. It's simply terrible. I exchanged it and the new one is just as bad and maybe even worse.

My guess is it has to do with one or multiple of the apps you have installed. There is a 3 step process to fix this issue.
#1 - See if any of the apps you have installed are running rouge. Check, battery usage, RAM usage, and Data Usage to see if you have any bad apps. Uninstall any 3rd party apps that you installed that are running too much. They may just still need updated to be optimized for this new device. Also you can use the "sleep" (doze) feature in battery management to restrict apps that are running TOO much in the background. Also on any apps that are using too much data or RAM check the permissions. If an app does not need access to Data, Media etc to work properly turn off those permissions.
#2 Debloat the device. I like "Package Disabler Pro". Basically if it has Facebook, FB, or ATT in the name you should disable it. Also you can go through an disable any Samsung software you do not use as well. I would be careful about using the "disable all bloatware" button because it is not setup correctly for this new device yet.
#3 Give it some time. It you have a TON of media on a micro EXSD card then it can take a new phone a long time to index and create thumbnails for all of that information. It should speed up i about a day or so once it finishes indexing. this will also effect your battery life till it is completed.

Yeah it will break Samsung Pay though... I think it's related to the UIBCVirtualSiftkey app, but have not confirmed that. Also it does not get nearly all of the bloatware. There is a ton of new AT&T junk it does not disable as well as a bunch of new Facebook crap and Samsung crap.

Definitely. It gave me the perfect opportunity to try out the scroll capture. Let me know if you have any questions. This is what I have disabled so far without any issues. Once I get a full completed list I'll probably do a write up about how to clean up the dock ROM. I think I'm about 70% done with the list.
So far I'm getting about 6.5 hrs of SOT and about 28 his of usage.

I am not positive but I think it's the UIBCVirtualSoftkey if the doesn't fix it. Just enable all of the stuff you disabled and reboot. Then only disable what's on my list. I can confirm is working with my setup.
I'm exchanging mine tomorrow and was hoping for better news but from your experience it sounds like I may have to deal with an expensive piece of crap.

This phone lags a lot especially in Chrome and other scrolling apps.. sometimes switching between apps takes lot of time too...I have been using Samsung phones for quite sometime, but unfortunately this is the phone lagging more than any other phone for me..debloated almost 150 apps, still the same..and it gets hot as well when watching videos...none of this happened for me on Note 5...I think Samsung screwed with Note7 software..when they initially released Grace UX software for Note 5, it was very smooth...but the final Note7 software seems to be laggy...the same apps and setup on Note5 doesn't give me these issues....gonna return and try my luck with new one...but good thing is battery life has been very good for me...easily 5hrs SOT whereas on Note5, I used to get only 3.5 hrs

I am exactly facing this issue..I am a heavy XDA user, so I monitor all the apps on phone and debloated lot (around 150) apps...still the same.. thing is lag doesn't happen all the times..but it starts from no where..but the phone consistently gets hot while moderate usage

When the phone is working properly, bloatware should make no noticeable difference and debloating is unnecessary.
My Note 7 usually responds instantly, with no lag, no matter how heavily I'm using it. That's with nothing disabled or debloated. (I'm using the Google Now launcher but everything else is stock/default, with no esoteric apps or settings.)
However, on three occasions in the week I've had the phone, it's gotten into a mode with serious lag while typing. In this mode, even though the characters I type still show up on the screen instantly, I can type 3 or 4 characters with no sound feedback or vibration feedback; then, there will be 3 or 4 delayed clicks and vibrations in rapid succession.
When this serious-lag mode starts, it continues even if I close all apps and put the phone in Airplane mode. It also makes no difference if I turn on power-saving mode, or even maximum power-saving. The only thing I've found that fixes it (for a while) is rebooting.
The intermittent occurrence of the serious-lag problem shows that it's not a matter of the phone being underpowered or overloaded. There's some specific bug that needs to be fixed.
UPDATE: It just happened for a fourth time. And when the serious-lag mode starts, it's not just typing that has a delay with audio feedback. The feedback delay also occurs when I tap on icons, tap on the Back or Recent-apps soft-buttons, etc. There's a delay of up to a second or two between tapping and hearing the feedback.
On the other hand, compute-intensive tasks--such as playing streaming video--work properly even when the phone is in serious-lag mode. So that's further evidence that there is some specific bug, and not a general problem of being underpowered or overloaded.

Curious, do these typing lags occur on the hangouts app?!?! It seems to be the ONLY app on my Note 5 (and all the other phones I've used) that has a VERY NOTICEABLE KEYBOARD LAG, especially with Samsung Stock keyboard. This happens even with other keyboards, but is WORST with samsung keyboard.....

No, the problem I'm seeing is unrelated to any app or keyboard. When my phone is in serious-lag mode, the problem occurs across the board. When it's not in lag-mode (which it usually isn't), then there's no lag in any app, including Hangouts.

Hmmm.....interesting....I use the app os monitor to show which processes are running at high cpu %. Perhaps that can shed some light on your lag issue?

It happens even with all apps closed, no heat, no battery drain. It's not a side-effect of the phone being bogged down with anything.
So I don't know when this started happening but almost every single game on my Galaxy S7 lags after about a minute of playing, like the frame rate will get cut down from 60fps to a choppy 30-50fps, and stay that way unless I exit to the home screen and back into the game or press the app switcher button for a second and go back into the game, then it jumps back to 60fps for a little bit and the lag goes away but it always comes back.
I have no idea what's causing this problem and I'm tempted to factory reset my phone to see if that fixes it because I've tried almost everything (disable game launcher and tools, disable the packages, game mode, high performance mode, delete cache, rebooting, etc.)
Does anyone else have this problem and could it be a certain app using resources in the background that's causing lag? I'm on the stock rom from at&t, no root and no bootloader unlocked, everything is pretty much vanilla.
Finally after months of trying to figure this out, I fixed it by pure luck.
Every Galaxy S7 user should do the following:
1. Download Game Tuner
2. Create a custom profile
3. Set FPS to 60
NOW ON TO THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP!
4. Set HW Performance to +4
HW Performance affects the stupid throttling that games seem to do that prevents smooth 60fps in an effort to preserve battery life and keep heat down I'm guessing. Setting it to +4 fixed all the lag I was getting in every single game.
I've been using my galaxy s8 (G950U) for about two weeks now. I feel like I've been ripped off. This thing gets warm just from streaming music via Pandora. Geekbench scores are better on both my Exynos s7 edge and my old note 5. Then there's the USB C audio lag. As soon as I plugged in usb c headphones, my s8 basically froze to the point of unusable. Anyone else having these problems or did I just happen to pick up a bad phone?
Havent noticed any of your issues.
I haven't tried USB-C headphones, but I am actually very satisfied with my phone apart from the battery. It's fast, responsive, handles everything I throw at it. Don't rely too much on benchmarks, it doesn't always represent the day to day use.

Haven't had it as long as you but i'm on day 4 and so far so good. Hopefully it stays that way.

I had an AT&T version and now an Exynos UK version. Both are incredibly responsive the latter more so. I spent hours yesterday with my phone connected to SideSync configuring it. Not a stutter or stall in anything I did. I can see how an S8 via Dex can emulate a PC. Your issues seem like a one-off. Most likely due to some combination of apps you have installed, something you've disabled or frozen, or a utility run amok (EG: Bixby re-mapper). Do you use SmartSwitch? Some apps don't like to be restored vs. installed fresh. As for USB-C I used it all day yesterday connected to a USB 3.0 port on my PC and regularly to connect my phone to Android Auto. The phone's performance never changed.
Here's how I configure my U.S. phones (it's not necessary on imports):
From a fresh restore from recovery I skip signing in to my Google and Samsung accounts.
I uninstall or disable all the carrier junk and any other apps I won't use.
I don't disable Samsung core apps because they're interdependent and can create problems and battery drain when they look for each other and they aren't there.
I sign in to my Samsung account and disable the syncs I don't use and then update all my pre-installed Samsung apps and download optional ones I use.
I sign in to my Google account and disable the syncs I don't use and quickly disable auto-update in the Play Store so I can control what's installed or updated.
Only after all my apps are in place do I start to play with the settings.
I backed up my AT&T S8+ to Samsung Cloud and only restored my apps, music, photos, documents, phone logs, and MMS history. Moving settings over is a crap shoot if something from the old phone incorrectly overlays something on the new phone. It's more time consuming to do it this way but (knock on wood) I've never had battery drain issues or any other funkiness with a new phone and I go through many. Good luck.

I have similar experience. My exynos S7E is way faster than this Snapdragon S8. Though I did get the UFS 2.0 version. Probably going to sell it and pick up another exynos.
Mine runs as slow as my galaxy s1...

I only have the AT&T bloatware installed. I also transferred the same apps from my s7 edge to my s8, so I doubt it's any extra apps I installed. Could me having a UFS 2.0 have an effect?
Coming from a Google Pixel, I'd say animations and general smoothness/responsiveness are definitely not up there.
It's not slower, it's just jerkier. I wish Samsung gave the same attention to software polishing as it does with hardware.
it's the bixby button remapper apps
mine was fine, then i installed one of those. then the phone was so sluggish and jerky when scrolling
disabled the remapper, and it's buttery smooth again

it must be something you have installed.
do you have any other apps showing in settings>accessibility>services?
Mine is smooth and fast. I disabled the bixby apk's, but only so I didn't accidentally hit the bixby button, not because there was lag or anything. I turn off all animations/etc in developer settings on all my phones since the animations seem pointless. Fastest phone I have had to date, with the Note 7 right there with it. The s7E also very fast. Now going back to my Note 4 - BIG difference in speed, the Note 4 felt sluggish as any 3 year old phone would in comparison.
Very smooth. As fast as iPhone 7 I have.
Try Factory Reset
Phone is awesomely quick even on power saving mode.

I think this is your problem: some people reported issues when transferring programs and settings from one device to another using smart switch and claim all was well after resetting and installing everything fresh. I can't confirm it, since I didn't transfer anything from my old phone except phone book, but then I don't have any issues either.
