Hello,
I have received Google Nexus 10 and it seems like the seal was broken, which suggests that somebody else has already used it (or at least unpacked).
I guess that the only known "big issue" is the light bleed. Could somebody tell me, step by step, how to determine it? (e.g. how to load all black screen? What brightness should I use to check it?). I am trying to judge whether to keep the tablet or not.
Thank you for help,
Theriel
Try using an app like this LCD test:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsImRlLmxhcHBlLnRpbS5hbmRyb2lkLmxjZHRlc3QiXQ..
go to the pure black and then play around with the brightness (set it to max).
You'll almost certainly going to see some but this should help you decide if it's a deal breaker for you.
the darker the room the better aswell! if you are in a pitch dark room and only see little light bleed at max brightness then have a little smile to yourself and enjoy the nexus!

So what is light bleed that matters?
I know the OP's question is on testing for bleed, but want to respond to help those wondering whether what they're seeing in their tests is normal or a defect that a replacement unit might solve . . .
Starting with a couple of suggested definitions:
'Light bleed' is a significant unevenness in screen lighting/brightness that's irritating in normal use – like scalloping along the edges, or being a lot brighter or darker on one side. Separately, let's call it 'black glow' when what's intended to be jet black on a screen doesn't appear completely black.
If you search the Web for 'light bleed' and the name of any major tablet, you'll find plenty of references to this. When examining your tablet, for context do the same with your laptop, LCD monitor, and LCD TV, for all are subject to the same concerns. No screen technology is perfect. Lighting on all LCD screens varies somewhat depending on the angle you look at it, and some level of 'black glow' is normal too.
Looking at your all-black screen in a dark room with the brightness turned up can be a useful test to verify problems if you find concerns that affect normal usage. This is a worst-case-scenario video test, and when you test your other LCD-screen devices this way, you are bound to see 'black glow'.
A lot of cell phones (mostly Samsung) have AMOLED screens that don't need screen backlighting & thus don't have 'black glow' – each pixel is a light and blacks can truly be black. But these screens are limited to smaller devices – the largest are two lower-resolution 7.7" units; you can't buy a 10" AMOLED tablet. With LCD's, note that the larger the screen & the higher the resolution, the brighter the backlight (really, it's on the edge) needs to be.
There are definitely defective units out there, and some that aren't as even as others. Hopefully this adds context to the discussion and will help folks new to the issue decide whether their unit is bad enough to be worth exchanging . . .

Mine is faintly noticeable all the time with auto brightness on. I asked for an RMA and it was 2-3 times as bad. I think I will keep this one. As of now looking at it really bothers me, but I know in a few months once this device has some wear it won't matter to me. However I am still debating on attempting to receive a refund and possibly buying it in the stores in a few months. Hmmm lol.
Thank you all for your informative responses.
I am attaching the pictures of my case. I guess I will have to return it - although you cannot see in the light and with non-black background, it is pretty annoying when the background is black and the ambient light is a bit dimmer...
What would you do in my case ? How does this case compare to your cases?
Thank you,
Theriel
my orignal device has servere light bleed on the left corner and my replacement device has servere light bleed on the right corner... 3rd one is on the way, please Google, give me a acceptable screen before the world ends!!
I do not think there is any point of returning it. It seems liek light bleed is inherent in the design of these tablets. I have two right in front of me, the second one has even worse light bleed. I shall be keeping the first one. Does any one know if they will charge my card for the second one. It seems like they charged me card, then a days before I got a second nexus 10, they removed the charged.
I was expecting a courier to pick up my old nexus 10. But no one has. Any one else in the same situation with 2 nexus 10s?

They will place another hold of the price of the device until the rma'd unit has returned to them. It would take another 7 days until the hold is released from what was explained to me. So at the moment for me they have 1k of my money on hold because the original is in route to them now and I had just ordered the replacement for the replacement!
You will have to setup a pickup or go to the nearest UPS facility to return your defective unit.

Yes, I was thinking that. But they do not have any of my money on hold. They did but then it was returned back?! Keep checking my account. I thought they were going to organise the collection of my old devise. Seems like i shall give them a ring. They may charge my card again!
So... what do you think about my case (see photos in the previous post)? How does it compare to the "average Nexus 10" you have/have seen? Is it "ok" or "one of the worst cases" or... ?
I am not sure if it is not worth waiting 2-3 weeks for a new tablet, as opposed to holding onto a defective one for a few years...

Your one looks bad!
@OP: It seems the question should be whether your screen looks great to you in normal use or not. If lighting evenness irritates under normal use, *then* the dark room/full-black screen test can confirm what you're seeing. Is only time you see a funny pattern when testing the thing this way?
We can't really know if a picture taken with a typical camera in a dark room really reflects how you see the image; most cameras normally crank the gain up 'till there's some kind of funny colored image. My screen is a bit brighter in the lower right when running this test -- which I see as nothing more than an interesting detail about how the backlighting works, it's completely irrelevant to me in normal use. If your picture really does reflect what you experience, and it affects normal usage . . . yep, it's worse than mine.
The easiest way you can get context for what you're seeing is probably to run the same test on any laptop or tablet you can get ahold of -- makes sense that you don't want your tablet to come up short when compared to what you see first-hand on other LCD screens. That's probably a lot better way to decide!
Given the documented issues some users are experiencing with the Nexus 9, I thought it might be useful to have an opinion poll. So without further ado, will you keep your Nexus 9?
Feel free to reply with your comments.
I bought and will keep. It's a great device.

Must return it because of uneven backlighting (see my post in the light bleed thread). Disappointed.
I'm loving mine. A touch of light bleed but I really don't notice it in regular use. It's a keeper!
Definitely keeping it. My device has none of the issues others are reporting.
I'll keep it for now.. Will see how it goes..

Mine has a few of the problems that have been reported. The bleeding back light on the top side... The back cover pokes out giving the tablet a slight twist so it doesn't lay flat and distorts the screen a little. White looks yellowish on one side. Etc. I think I could have gotten used to the light bleeding; it blends into the status bar in portrait mode. It wasn't until I tried reading comics and e-books (full screen black&white) that I accepted the other problems would be hard to live with. I also realized the size and aspect ratio are just perfect for browsing and reading so I'm going to exchange it instead of getting another model. It's a lovely tablet despite the build issues.
Plan to keep, it gives me different experience compared to the iPad 3 I traded in.
I have 2. Gonna keep both. Ones mine and ones fit my mother. Both have slight light bleed but we don't notice it often enough to care.
Im vary happy with my Nexus 9
Wanted to love it but battery life is simply ridiculous for my unit plus obvious light bleed issues as a lot of other members have mentioned... I played with it and still kind of love it, love Lollipop too but have asked for a refund, sending it back tomorrow. Will wait for a few months while they iron out the manufacturing process and lower price... We'll see then.
Love everything about it but I have another one coming because the light bleed was too much to forgive. Hoping for the best.
its a great phone, its for keeps
will keep mine plus my trusty blackberry, must have for me
I love my Nexus 9! Perfect for my Android family!
I love mine too! I strongly recommend that those of you who got bad hardware on the first round give it another chance. Not all of the devices are plagued by these issues.
I will return mine. The power and volume buttons are really too bad. I think I will keep my nexus 10 and wait for next year.
What do you think about the buttons? I barely can't press the volume buttons without using my finger nails.

Hardware defect. I had two and the one that I sent back had this issue along with major light bleed. The power/volume buttons on the one I kept are fine.
consider the poll including the option:
the tablet is somewhat disappointing but will keep it (or something that represents this reality for us fanboys)
Oh yes its a keeper.

Maybe it is just me (i think it is) but i'm not too impressed with the screen. Most reviews are stellar for the screen. when placing it next to my oneplus 2 i actually prefer the oneplus 2. I don't know whether I should RMA and see if a second one is any better or if it is just my mind playing tricks on me. One thing I'm really getting is the coolish hue when you tilt the phone up/down or left/right. I actually prefer my screens cooler. should I RMA or am i expecting something that is fine?
There's a difference in some of the screens, I had to get an rma because of the same issue. My new phone is perfect

The Nexus 6P has a somewhat warm screen calibration which adheres closely to the target white point of the sRGB standard. The OnePlus 2 has a much cooler calibration. That's just the way it is and if you prefer cooler screens, you will like the OnePlus 2 screen better. That said, if you aren't looking at them side by side and just use the Nexus 6P for a few days, your eyes will start to get used to the warmer white point and it probably won't bother you anymore.
Manufacturers REALLY need to start including a white point / color temperature display setting. This is a setting you will find on nearly every desktop computer monitor, so I have no idea why phone manufacturers are too stupid to add this. I think HTC and OnePlus have actually added a setting for it in recent updates, but Samsung, LG, Motorola, and Google have yet to add the feature. Considering how long it took Google to finally give us a setting to toggle between accurate and vibrant colors, I expect it will take them a couple more years to give us a color temperature setting.
Hello, sorry for the really long post.
my current phone is the nexus 6 and i plan to upgrade to either the nexus 6p or moto x in the next week or so but first i have some questions.
Firstly i have had my nexus 6 for almost a year and for the first few weeks i had 5 different devices as the nav buttons and status bar kept burning in to the screen after a few days or sometimes even a day of use with the brightness at about a third. After the 5th phone i just accepted the burn in and kept it but i was wondering if any of you have had burn in on the 6p. I know amoled screens get burn in over time but im hoping the 6p has a better screen and less chance of burn in than the 6.
Also does the screen go as bright as the 6? I checked in the store at a demo version and it didnt seem as bright at max brightness. But it did still have that yellow tint to the whites and pinkish tint when the brightness is at its lowest. I was hoping that would be fixed in this new phone but its not a big deal as i have gotten used to it from my nexus 6.
On to the back and i was wondering if it scratches easy and if so what would be the best colour to get so that the scratches are the least noticeable? Also i looked at another display model from a different store which wasn't a real phone just one of the fake ones you see and the N and E from the nexus logo on the back was rubbing off. Is this the case with the real phones or was it just because the fake phone in the store was made different.
Thank you

1. Too early to tell about burn in.
2. IDK, I didn't have the 6. It's bright enough to need to turn down.
3. I have mine in a case. If you are worried about scratches, then get the plain aluminum.

Dear Friends,
In peripheral vision, I can see a the 6p screen flickering slightly. Mostly only noticeable on bright white and green screens on full brightness (without auto brightness adjustment)
Can you please do me a solid one and check it out on your device?
1. Turn Off brightness adjustment in Display settings
2. Set phone to full brightness
3. Load a completely white background (chrome browser starting page or any screen testing tool)
4. Hold the phone centrally close to your face and look at another object in the room while viewing the phone in your peripheral vision
5. Look back and forth at the object in the room and at the screen to see if you notice a slight flickering or restlessness in the screen
The flickering is very faint and hard to notice in peripheral vision but it is definitely there. I tired the same with an iphone 6plus and the iphone screen (my brothers Iphone, I'd never buy none) definitely has no flicker at all. It's very steady.
The screen is also not as bright as the iphone 6+ but I think that is well known.
I'd like to know if it is standard with all nexus 6p's and if it bothers you at all.... maybe I am just obsessing or maybe not and I need to RMA the device which is a huge pain in the ass.
Thanks!
Thomas
I do not have this issue at all. There are two possibilities, there is a defect with your device OR you are sensitive to the refreshing of the display. However, most modern displays have a refresh rate of 60Hz or higher (I assume the Nexus 6P and iPhone 6 are 60Hz, but I cannot find that info) so it's odd you haven't experienced this with other devices.
My best advice is for you to get your hands on a different Nexus 6P to see if you have the same problem. If you can't do that, I would suggest you try to see if you notice it in any other displays. Maybe go to a store and try it with a Samsung Galaxy S6/Note 5 as those have a similar AMOLED display, whereas the iPhone is LCD.
Thanks for your quick feedback. I am really surprised that noone has noticed this. I am looking at the device straight I don't notice it either it is only in peripheral vision that I can see it but even then it is very hard to catch. I think that indeed it must have something to do with the refresh rate of the screen.
Maybe other people can give it a try ? I have a gut feeling that it is an "issue" in all Nexus 6P devices but that most people don't notice it because it takes a very malicious mind to see it. Maybe it's because the device is brand new and the screen needs some time to "break in" or "adjust" ?
I just want to make sure that I don't have a defective device.
Thanks everyone

I have heard of that before, but you're seeing the issue on super high brightness. Perhaps try it on a lower brightness to see if it worsens.
PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) is used for making the display darker. For example, say that a phone has a 60Hz refresh rate, meaning all of the pixels update 60 times each second. To make the display dimmer, the pixels are on for a shorter period of time in between each refresh. For maximum brightness, the pixels are on for the entire time between each refresh. Thus, when the display is dimmer, some might notice flickering as the pixels turn on and off.
Billy, again, thanks for your response. I will give it a try.
The best way I can describe it is that the effect is extremely subtle; so much, that I don't notice it looking directly at the screen but it translates into a sort of "nervousness" of the screen in general because you are left with the feeling that the screen is constantly moving and not really 100% steady. I am not sure if it is something I can/will get used to over time but I am willing to give it a try for a few days.
I am also almost certain that I don't have a hypersensitivity of some sorts but rather that all Nexus 6P phones have this issue just that most of the people don't really notice it.
I'd love to hear from others about if they see it
It's normal, it's caused by PWM. I don't notice it much on my 6P,my Note 4 had it much worse. Some people are more aware of it than others and seem more succepatble to seeing it.

Thanks nice to hear that it is "normal" i was worried i had a defective unit
So you are saying if you really pay attention to it, you WILL notice some of it for ANY person, right?
I have a Galaxy S6 and I have not noticed it there. Does that mean that the S6 is not using PWM ?
Thanks

I think the S6 uses it also but some phones seem worse than others. As I said, I can see my 6P a little but my Note 4 was worse, I could see the flicker all the time.
I just checked my S6 for the issue (side by side with the 6P) and I can say with confidence that the S6 does not have the issue AT ALL. The screen does not flicker in peripheral vision and as a result appears steadier and calmer in general.
If i hold a video camera over each screen I can see scan-lines moving diagonally upward in regular intervals/spacing which both phones, however the lines are stronger and more visible with the 6P Screen. Which in my humble option explain why I am noticing this effect. I am just not sure if something like that warrants the effort of returning or swapping out my 6P
It doesn't really bother me but knowing that maybe other 6P devices have it less makes me think because I shelled out 699€ for it....
What would you do?

Does it get worse on the 6P when you turn the brightness down? How about on the S6, if you turn the brightness down (which should exemplify the PWM issue) does it have the same effect as the 6P?

Thanks for asking. When I turn the brightness down on the 6P it gets better; the effect is not noticeable anymore when it's set on 50% brightness. As soon as I have it on 100% I can see it from the corner of my eyes when set on a white background.
The question is really if I can expect it to be different on another 6P or if all the 6P's have this level of subtle "flickering" if I may call it.
I suspect the latter... and from this point of view it doesn't make sense to swap it out. if you are able to notice it ever so slightly on your device then changes are that it is present on all devices and that the 6P just has it more than for example the Samsung S6 because on the sammy I can't notice it at all, even on full or low brightness for that matter.
As you've said , if it were a PWM issue, It would worsen with low brightness, correct? In my case it worsens with high brightness. So what really is it then?
Quick question... Under normal day-to-day usage, you look at your screen out of the corner of your eyes and have the brightness set at 100%?

You're asking the right questions here and the answer is no to both ?
However I hope your can understand my concern because in the beginning nothing is more important than having a flawless device to my very rigid mind.
Also im worries that the screen in general is not calm as compared to other models such as the s6. Basically that since the flicker is present I might still perceive it even when looking straight at the screen.
I decided to order another 6P to be able to compare the 2 and see if the issue persists on the new device. Depending on the outcome I will keep one or return both. The flickering is really evident and IMO unacceptable for a device with this pricetag.
I am not sure if this is the same thing, but see the flicker in the attached video. It's at 5th,10th and 15th seconds. But then I checked it on Galaxy S4 and see it there as well. I don't notice it in any other screen. May be NBA app is causing it.

I have been searching for someone, anyone, who has this issue as I do. Everything you said previously, I experience as well. I've had a 6p since November, and the flickering was there from day one. It's easy to notice at >50% brightness on white or greenish screens. Less so on red and blue. It's something I've gotten somewhat used to, but sometimes it really bugs me. Have you had any success with trying things?
I have recorded the screens of the 6p and 5x. The difference and flicker of the 6p is clear.
