Where ROM to use now? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now that Cataclysm ROM has been shut down where is everyone moving to? I've tried Pire Nexus and Resurrection ROMs but came back to Cataclysm. I'm at a loss right now.

Just curious, anyone know the reason why its gone?

Got tired of accusations of being unoriginal.

Ahh that's too bad

ubermallow+kylo is not bad.....they are not on xda but move to google+

Pure nexus or aosip

Whaaat ??
Got tired of accusations of being unorigina!?

Dirty Unicorn Test Builds + elementalX
AOSiP and AICP are 2 other great ROMs

Actually, if you want the kinds of mods that Cataclysm gave you, while remaining very close to stock, Chroma is probably what you're looking for. Only two small mods to the stock kernel and a handful of useful features (status/notification bar customization, advanced reboot/power menu, a few display tweaks, etc).

I switched to Dirty Unicorn and love it.

Actually liking screwd the best at the moment

Team Nocturnal SinLessROM is sweet! But there are othe good ones as well...

Benzo by far! If your looking for a feature rich rom, this is it. Not that the others aren't great also ...

Running screwd. Great ROM

I forgot about Chroma, maybe I'll give that a go. I just remember the Dev kind of being like Franco; a bit snooty.

I didn't have the 6. I've found it OK. My problem is I also like virtually a stock experience except I really like status bar customization, advanced power/reboot menu, and the Chroma dark theme is a nice touch. Not really interested in Layers or CMTE any more. Interestingly, I always liked the CM cLock module, but so far the weather component hasn't worked, so I ended up using Chronus. End of the day, now that the February security patch is out, I may just reflash stock with TWRP and root.

[Q] What ROM are you using and why, and how often do you change?

I'm a new Android user and loving all of the options out there in terms of Kernels, ROMS, etc, but I find myself being overwhelmed with all of the options out there. So far I'm pretty set with running franco Kernel (running r20 right now), but I find myself always wanting to try out new ROMs, and I'm hoping that doing all of this switching around isn't going to mess up my device but I just can't nail myself down to a ROM that I'm set with.
I had been running CM 10.1 nightlies, but just recently a couple of days ago I jumped over to MiNCO because of the support for franco Kernel.
Now I find myself looking at the Xylon ROM but am worried that jumping around from ROM to ROM is going to mess with my device.
What ROMs are you guys using, and why are you using them? I find myself that the most important factors for me are battery life/performance, quick toggles, and the power menu.
I havean EVO 4G LTE .. ever since i got the o.g. EVO I was hooked on them. But I use a stock with goodies Rom by flex. Its a great rom has everything I need and its super smooth
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
I generally stick to CyanogenMod. I keep an eye on the changelog and flash new nightlies when things I want are merged.
I've messed with AOKP and MIUI in the past but they're not really for me.
Cyanogenmod 10.1 Jellybro because it has everything I need and is clean code (no dirty hacks). Used to be a fan of aokp but too many dirty code and unicorns for me.

cm is my favourite rom, but thats not really the truth what you say. in order to stuff in tons of devices that normally do not run aosp they have to stretch the base wide open with hacks. this is the hackiest rom in the android scene and it must be, otherwise people out there wouldnt know what android is. thats why cm traditionally never had so much traction on this plattform than on others, simply because uncompromised aosp is leaner and more optimized for android itself and the nexus plattform. on a legacy device i'd always suggest cm, thats obvious. on nexus cm may not be the obvious best choice anymore, because the others are likely faster, more stable, have less daily fallouts, and in some cases have more features, like aokp, if youre the kind of guy that likes that sort of thing. if i flash cm here, its because i like their creative/inventive spirit and would like to support the project overall. flashing is easy though, trying out a couple of em isn't that much of a problem. (-:
Paranoid android. Not even considered any other ROM since I flashed this one. Its just so amazing. I couldn't live without all the colours that change per app, and all the other features it has.
I suggest trying it out now.

With my previous device, s2, I changed a lot, from RR to AOKP to CM etc etc, I like them all.
On my N4, I'm using stock until a really good-good ROM comes out, I don't have any problems, other than battery, so I don't panic, YET.

For me its PA rom....Ive tried every rom because I love flashing lol....but this is an honest opinion from experience....I know best rom talk is not allowed but the best to me is PA rom because of one simple reason....other than stock...its perfect!!!! And with that being said I have No issues with it very stable..super fast...alot of features man I can go on and on....if you want your N4 running perfect go PA...there are some other good roms because we have alot of elite devs in here and im sure more are on the way...but to me theres nothing better than super wiping your phone just to make sure its really clean and flashing PA...all you can say is wow after that lol......and now I change roms everytime Moles and his crew update PA....and also flash Franco kernel with this and your N4 will be excellent....
I'm currently on liquidsmooth. I've tried rasbeanjelly, Xylon, codefirex, CM 10.1, MinCo and a few others I can't remember. All were great. I'm really like liquidsmooth. It's a great balance. I flash, sometimes 3 times a day.
Setup: Code FireX w/ Faux beta
CFX is the first non-stock ROM that I decided to try because it uses the Linaro chain and I was pretty curious about the speed.
Long story short, CFX's performance is apparent as soon as you start using the device, it had much needed improvements.
Oh, and did I mention the CFX settings? Synegye's special built in mods allow you to improve your experience even more. For instance I decided to use the 6 signal Wi-Fi/Network, center clock, smaller Nav Bar, as well as dual view. This package, when combined with Faux's kernel presents you with an unbeatable experience on the best Android experience to date.

That sounds pretty intriguing, I think I just found the next ROM that is going to get flashed on my N4.
Nice discussion. Very interesting.
via Google Nexus 4
For reliability and just the right amount of mods for me it's been CM on any device I've owned 90% of the time. It's the least buggy for me, although of course, there will be the occasional bug along the way. Works beautifully on the the Nexus, although some mods may take longer to merge as other devices have to be taken into account.
Can't think of any "hacks" needed for CM to run on any Nexus, although much hackage needed for it to run on Samsung branded phones, and any other manufacturer that doesn't ship with AOSP and may be slow to release source. The kernel for the GN was less than impressive, but the N4 kernel is great.
Running stock rooted. Going CM 10.1 as soon as I get back home from vacation.

Stock with Franco kernel and you got the most stable combo ever seriously though. Feels very snappy while battery is great but also is really stable.

I am flashing between a number of Roms daily. Change between cm 10.1, aokp, paranoid, slimbean, codefire. Currently on paranoid b9. I love the options we have on the nexus. It would be a lot less hassle for me if I don't have to restore my texts everytime. Still I pretty much flash a different ROM daily

+1 for stock with Franco.
No stable (official stable) roms out there yet that I like, and since n4 is my primary phone, I need my stability :/.
Probably will switch over to AOKP milestone or CM stable.
On past devices I've run with CyanogenMod (any variation), but on the Nexus line I tend to prefer staying with a stock ROM and a custom kernel (though I'm stock presently) for the sake of cleanliness. CyanogenMod is great, it's built by trusted developers, and all around well known for their great reputation. On the flip side, I tend to stay stock because I need to help other people out often enough that I start to forget which features were added by the CM team and which come with Android itself.

[Q]Which ROM would you recommend?

Hey guys,
I just recently got my Nexus 10 and after making sure everything is fine with it I want to go ahead and root it.
Since I'm using a HTC Sensation as my phone I know how much a good ROM can improve the user experience and I'm looking for a nice ROM with good battery life.
Normally it's pretty easy to find a thread with a poll, or suggestions etc. but I'm out of luck when it comes to the N10 - haven't found anything yet.
Which ROM would you recommend as a good starting point to try out?
Rather than a poll or suggestions, it'll be better if you try it out different ROMs on your own since most ROMs here are fairly stable. Just remember to read their features and stuff..
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
Personally I recommend starting with CM. They have the easiest to use custom interface and pretty much everything just works fantastic. PA has gobs of customization but it is far from the smoothest experience on the N10. I personally just don't like AOKP.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
Try a few to see what you like. Personally, I'd go with the latest AOKP PUB build. TONS of customization options, extremely stable, and the PUB extras make it smoother and faster.
I have run most of the ROMs and I prefer TeamEOS followed by AOKP. They both have built in custom optional tweaks.

This ! if you like the customizations that AOKP offers try Mr.Robinsons AOKP PUB (Project Unicorn Butter).
I have to say i was a little bit disappointment with CM 10.1 on the manta, using it on my I9100 since almost 1.5 years.
In My Opinion AOKP PUB works better on our Device
Thanks for the replys guys, it's a lot easier for me to know which threads to look for now, thank you!

I'm using that one too, and it's great. And if you pair it with KTManta kernel you get a pretty customizable set up.
I don't know why, but Mr Robinson's was a bit of a nightmare for me. I tried twice (clean install) but each time one of my favorite apps, FX Explorer, would lock up when trying to set up/access remote locations and then the N10 would just reboot. It happened repeatedly whether I used TiBU to restore data or installed fresh from the Store. This doesn't happen with the AOKP (mr1, build 6) I'm on now. The final straw, though, was rebooting from recovery (didn't do anything, went in and changed my mind) and couldn't get past the lock screen.
Anyone have an idea what the hell was going on?

No, I asked because I had instability problems with that kernel, until I found out they were caused by improper gpu voltages.
But wiith the stock kernel and Mr.Robinson's rom my Nexus was rock solid, so I can't help you there.
I prefer AOKP ROM, because he faster that stock, he has many settings and very customize. Also he has good performance at games and benchmarks.
I decided to try the AOKP Pub by mrRobinson and I'm very satisfied so far
Might try Paranoid next, or I'll just stick with this one for a while - we'll see. You just have so many options to play around with on an Android device... it's beautiful.

Liquid Smooth 2.8 Installation Issue

When I try to install this rom, I get stuck on a bootloop. After several minutes I manually restart my tablet, the set up menu pops up. The navigation bar is on the right side of the screen instead of it being below and all you see is a really small "back" button. Once I finish setting up, the tablet starts to lag and isn't usable. Anyone out there experiencing this issue & can I get a possible fix? I really enjoy this rom on my phone but it's frustrating that I can't seem to get it to work on my tablet. Any help would be great.

I don't think he can, there is a minimum post count to post in dev forum.
thefnshow66, I had this issue as well, I even wiped everything beforehand. I would wait for 2.9 if you really want to run Liquid. In the meantime Purity AOSP, Buttered Manta AOKP from mrRobinson, and Carbon ROM CM are the best ones to try depending on which flavor suits you best. Trinity and KTManta are the best kernels to use. (I prefer Trinity)
I have been using Liquid Roms since my OG DROID and they were always solid, but their quality control for Manta has been somewhat lackluster, last couple builds had broken bluetooth, and this one has some serious SystemUI issues.

thanks for the reply. Every Rom I've tried has had some issue. I really like rootbox but I noticed that the menu button doesn't work for me. Buttered Manta AOKP is the closest Rom I've found that works great but it still doesn't halo added to it yet. I really liked that liquid smooth ran with Nova Launcher right away and it has halo now but the sysem UI after 2.5 sucked. I tried contacting the developer over twitter and I've gotten no reply. I might have to try Carbon.

Carbon's great, but I don't think it has HALO (unless I've missed an OTA or something, which granted is 100% possible). In any event, you may well get enough posts responding to this thread to go post in the Liquid thread.
Personally, though, if you can take Carbon, I'd run with that. It's been much kinder to me than Liquid, which was my daily driver for a long time on my Galaxy Nexus (and then my Nexus 7/Nexus 10 consequently).

Need an advice in choosing a ROM.

Should be an issue from your side because my N6P is flying compared to my OPO.
Factory reset might solve the issue - backup first.

I kicked out Cyanogen about a few years ago when I had the Nexus S. As the above users advised, PureNexus is currently the most-used ROM here, and pair it with your choice of kernel, and you will be good.
I have the OnePlus One too, and it's performance is nowhere near my 6P.
If you're looking for a lot of customizations, DirtyUnicorns or ResurrectionRemix would be great choice too.
Pure nexus, vanir comotio is good. Cyanogen is good. Dirty unicorns is the best. Its fast, perfect on battery, and has anything that exists. Dirty unicorns with their kernel, and I've ran every current ROM.
But I've heard that Cyanogen is still not well developed for this phone, is this true? or can it be used as a daily user ?

I may be in the minority but I prefer screwd ROM. The 4/8 milestone release is very smooth, fast, & stable. I was a long time RR user, but since "OK google" detection from the lock screen wasn't reliable Ive switched. I've tried a lot of 6p ROMs tho & pure nexus is a great, stable ROM. I didn't have the best luck with cyanogen, even tho for other devices its been one of my favorite. & some cyanogen based ROMs ive had some minor issues with. For reliability & stability I'd go pure nexus or screwd. For customization I'd go Resurrection Remix, but those are simply my personal preference. DU is also a great rom. Theres lots of ROMs to choose from. I like to try em a wide selection & then decide. Afterall what's the point of having a nexus device if you're going to leave it stock. I guess for me thats any device tho.
Pure nexus rom for sure
I have been using it since I bought my 6p

Nexus 6 Rom/Kernel poll

Please list -
- which rom and kernel you are using? (could be stock too)
- how often do you update? do you update every month?
I'll get started - I'm using PureNexus from May with ElementalX kernel. I don't plan to update till the next N preview which hopefully should be more stable.
Lite stock rom prerooted. Dev. Danvdh. July 2016.
Kernel 3.40.10
Battery: blacked out apps TBO team; dark layers.
Update: every month; download latest zip of Danvdh.
Flash with Twrp-recovery 3.0.2.0.
Stock rooted now, but between the monthly security updates I'm trying almost every ROM, N included.
The same regarding the kernels.
Minimum SOT 4 hours, maximum 8 hours.
Pure Nexus with its kernel. Layers as dark as night. I upgrade with each rom update. Runs so smooth and stable it's almost boring!
for the past few weeks ive been back to stock. flashed july ota and now currently stock still

I have tried a lot as I post on nearly every thread but Chroma with elemental X is my daily driver that's I've really settled on. The dev for chroma updates the ROM pretty often and is active in the thread. I'm sure pure Nexus dev is very busy with other things but I don't see him as frequently in his thread.
I used to use pure Nexus quite a bit but I prefer chroma's layout vs pure Nexus.
Krexus rom with monthly update
At the moment with it's own stock kernel.
But from time to time I switch to hellscore or blackbird kernel :good:

agree a million %, thats why these types of threads get shut down all the time, as they usually turn into a flaming mess of what is a better rom..

these kinds of threads used to really bother me, especially since most didnt realize that "best" is all relative to you, by what you want or need. the thing is, we are all different people, and want or need different things. nowadays, i see that most people do realize that now. so, it makes me that much happier
well, its not so bad in the nexus threads, where people like a little more "diversity" on their phone.
but, ask this in a Samsung thread, or some HTC threads, and its "flame on"!
Official Resurrection Remix 5.7.0 with the stock kernel
Update whenever there is one, usually within a day or two of the update launching.
Stock AOSP MM on my N6 here, rooted and Xposed of course, but I think Elite kernel is but far the best for N6. Insane battery life without a noticeable performance hit.
SkyDragon Graveyard Rom and SkyDragon Kernel is a great combo for me :good::good:
