How do I Revert to Stock Unrooted Marshmallow? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted 1575 with Marshmallow; however, my camera is not shooting video. Except for the video not working, the phone works fine. I may have a hardware issue, but will probably need to verify that there's nothing about my modified set up that is causing this. I've cleared caches and rebooted, also tried Google stock camera with same results.
Root wise, I went through some maneuvers to initially get root with Marshmallow, which involved flashing a modified version of boot.img (discussed here: https://reformedmusings.wordpress.c...ure-2015-to-android-6-0-marshmallow-on-linux/ and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64107089&postcount=290).
Is it just a question of replacing boot.img with the stock Marshmallow boot.img, If so, where should I get that?
I have a good TWRP backup on my desktop from today...

I would just do a full wipe in twrp.

As "Swipe to Factory Reset" under Wipe? Forgive my ignorance, but does this "unroot" the device? and given that I have inbuilt Google auto backup, will my apps get restored?

three questions about Nexus 6P

hi guys,
please i have some questions i really need there answers:
1- (rooted phone) if i do a factory data reset will the root gone and the TWRP also ?
2- (rooted phone) is there a way to install an update if i got it ( like update security patches "monthly" ) on rooted phone without wipe data or loosing the root or TWRP?
3- (rooted phone) if i reinstall the factory image full, the root and TWRP will have gone or not ?
thanks a lot !
1. If you use systemless root a factory reset will remove it. If you use a root method that modifies the system partition a factory reset won't remove root. Factory resets will not remove TWRP.
2. Installing monthly security updates and keeping TWRP, root, and data can be done by manually installing the update using fastboot and doing the following:
-Systemless root method: flash everything EXCEPT the recovery, boot, and userdata images.
-System based root method: install everything EXCEPT the recovery and userdata images. You will have to reflash Superuser/SuperSU (whichever you prefer) in TWRP since flashing the system image will remove root. There's no way around this.
3. If you use fastboot to install everything included in a factory image you will lose root, data, and TWRP.

If you are running Marshmallow or Nouget and used a version of SuperSU that is a year or less old it does system less root by default.
You can flash OTA updates on a rooted device with FlashFire without using a computer.
You can also flash an OTA image in TWRP and then simply flash root after, before you boot the phone. If the phone boots without root, out will wipe TWRP and leave you with stock recovery.
But honestly, from the questions being asked, you might not want to try this stuff until you understand it better. Losing root and TWRP is not a big deal. You can flash them again in about 1min and 30 seconds, so it's not worth worrying about.

Why would factory reset remove systemless root? I expect factory reset to only reset what you're supposed to have changed since factory image. That is /data.
Systemless must be in /data if it's not in /system, right? I don't really know much about systemless, because I don't use Android pay, Snapchat or play children's games haha.
But my guess is that if it's not touching system, then it must be in data, so wiping data would remove it. But I'm just guessing.

You guessed right. Never thought of that, thought it was actually all done from boot partition.
Quoting Chainfire:
As the binaries should still be updatable, and we don't know the space we have available in the boot image itself, we're mounting a (writable) ext4 image with /su as mount point from /data, and modifying PATH accordingly. Interestingly, for reasons yet unknown to me, if the image is mounted r/o by init, later remounting it r/w causes a bunch of issues. So we're keeping it r/w (for root) for now.

Booting issue -

I used Flashfire to flash a radio.img without checking flash bootloader.
I can get into the bootloader and twrp.
When wiping the device and flashing another rom or restoring a backup my 6p does not get passed the custom rom splash screen.
I was thinking of trying to fastboot flash system/data/cache of the March update and see if it boots.
I know I messed up. don't even know if it was because I didn't check the bootloader option in Flashfire. Just my guess because everything was working fine beforehand.
Any help or ideas would be welcome.

Hey... You said you wiped your device? What did you wipe in TWRP?
Try to install a ROM from TWRP. Once it's over go in wipe and do a factory reset. Reboot. It should likely fix your issue.
Good luck...

Hey thanks for the reply.
Yeah, I wiped data, system, cache. Just the standard - I still have internal storage intact.
Its just strange, I've used Flashfire before but not for flashing a radio and it worked out fine.
I am on 3.79 and used Flashfire to flash 3.78. Went to the bootloader just to check and it still shows 3.79. Just my fault . I didn't check flash bootloader in the Flashfire settings. Atleast that's what I am guessing. Things were just fine before

Well, if nothing work, maybe backup your internal storage and flash a factory image... Then in recovery do a factory reset afterward. Who knows. Going back to stock shouldn't hurt anyway.
Good luck...

I've used FF to flash only radio files to the modem partition many times without issue. You untick all but modem, and you untick inject SU and preserve recovery. Not sure what went wrong for you. As mentioned , you should be able to manually flash stock and if you're careful, you'll still have your data. All your settings will be reset, but the userdata will be there. You can even use flash-all.bat, but open it in a text editor and remove the "-w" flag so it will not wipe your userdata. The Google page where you get the full factory image will have instructions.

Thanks. It was obviously my fault somehow.
I do remember there being only one option to tick.
Using fastboot back to stock did the trick and made me realize maybe I should hold off on using Flashfire for a bit.

Impossibly persistent problem even after reset

I have a Sprint Note 3 and I am having the dreaded "Unfortunately, the process android.process.media has stopped" problem.
I tried every single fix I found online. Even the stupid ones I knew wouldn't work. I finally caved and did a full wipe. Low and behold, on the very first setup screen the error message immediately popped up.
I am stock (whatever the latest version is) and rooted.
If factory reset doesn't work I don't know what else would work. That's usually the last recourse. Any suggestions? HELP!
Do I maybe need to re-flash the stock rom? If so, can someone please provide a link?
Suggest you ask in the SPRINT forum .

Yes, you need to re-flash stock ROM (search in updato). I'd also suggest you do a full DATA wipe with TWRP before and THEN flash stock ROM. Make sure you backup everything before anything.

Holy crap. I downloaded a stock ROM from Updato and my phone isn't bricked but I'm worse off now.
Somehow, nothing at all changed on my phone after I flashed the ROM. All my apps, data, screens, everything is still there. However, I lost root and I lost my custom recovery and I still have the problem I had before.
Two questions:
1) I still have a Nandroid backup of my rooted phone from before I flashed the stock ROM. Can I restore this Nandroid backup with the stock recovery?
2) If not I will install TWRP again. At that point can I just restore the rooted Nandroid and gain root again or do I have to root first and then restore the Nandroid?
What a mess. Why did everything stay the same after flashing the stock ROM? Is updato a legit website?

It's a legit website but you need to wipe everything before flashing stock ROM. The order would have been: Boot into TWRP -> Wipe/Factory reset -> Format Data -> Reboot to download mode -> Flash stock
Yes, you will have to re-install TWRP again and restore your nandroid backup.

Flash 8.0 using FlashFire

Can you/has anyone flashed 8.0 using FlashFire? Full image and just flashing Boot, System, and Vendor from 7.1.2? The reason I ask, I have never had luck doing just downloading the OTA, and flashing that with FlashFire
Thanks

you can always ran the flash-all.bat file after editing the file and removing the -w from it.
If you want to keep your system decrypted simply boot to bootloader/recoery and flash any moded kernel. either way, using flashboot is simple enough so you don't have to use flashfire.

This worked for me, except that it erased TWRP even when I selected to option to back up recovery. At the end it wouldn't boot up and had to perform a factory reset, so in the end, I got a clean, stock 8.0, unrooted.

I wonder why it did that, I had no issues, I have had it do that before on 7.1.2 however.
I downloaded the full ota file from Google site, and flashed it like a normal ota + root afterwards with flashfire.
Been 3 days since, Android o works like a charm!

in terms of flashing i flashed it like any normal monthly security patch lol, just went on google ota page, downloaded the ~1gb file.. then on flashfire i chose ota, selected said file + inject superSu afterwards, for wiping i chose cache and dalvik only. and done.

I have 6p 64gb also. We're you on the August build 7.1.2. and you only wiped dalvik and Cache and did you uncheck Data & 3rd party apps.so you just wiped dalvik & cache and nothing else. I usually flash the factory image to get monthly update because my bootloader is unlocked. So I don't get OTA updates thru my phone.

i think i was on may or June's build i don't remember correctly. I also have bootloader unlocked but i never allow automatic OTA updates threw my phone, I just download the file manually (from here https://developers.google.com/android/ota) and flash it with flashfire, that way i continue where i left off without loosing any data (+root ). you should try it. and yeah on wipe options i untick everything except cache and dalvik.

Thanks ixayman, going to wait a few days, because the OTA says it's not compatible with T-Mobile, us Cellular, Fi. All those are in my fi that I use. And I read that people who down loaded either Factory image or OTA are not working with Fi . When they fix this I try it then.
Thanks, you've been a big help

Stuck in spinning circles after updating to OOS 5.0 Oreo OTA

Hello! I just updated to the latest OTA of OOS 5.0 and now the phone is just stuck on the screen where the white dots spin around I tried clearing cache, wiped "System settings" via Oxygen Recovery and no luck. I sideloaded the zip to my device and flashed it over the one I had on it previously. I followed this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/guide-restore-data-stuck-bootloop-n-o-t3724515 without any results! This is ridiculous. I just wanted to update to Oreo. Here are my phone details: https://imgur.com/a/n4rtR I am unsure what to try next. Should I wipe /system and flash the previous ROM zip file and try that? I can see my files but they are completely encrypted thanks to OOS, but only can I see them in Oxygen Recovery; TWRP shows nothing. Suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.
Had the same problem, had to format Data partition to get it working. Lost all data though
I was on OOS 4.5.15 with Magisk root and TWRP. Last night, uninstalled Magisk and I flashed stock recovery to update my phone. Even though I cleared cache and Dalvik, boot loop happened.
Only after a full reset, the phone boot normally. Since I had all important files backed up, I did not loose anything but it still bothers me. There should have been a more streamlined update process.
I completely bricked my device with the update, so i used this tutorial : https://www.androidexplained.com/oneplus-5-unbrick-return-stock/
I lost all my data but now it work like a charm and i was able to update properly to Oreo

You have to do a full wipe (system, data, internal storage, and both cache) when going from Nougat to Oreo. That is the only way.
