I have seen several posts with this question, but none with answers. Has anyone found a way to move the soft keys to one side or another? I keep hitting them when I type (did it while typing this ironically). Never did make sense to me to have a touch sensitive home button right underneath one of the most often used buttons on the typing board. In any case, I have scoured the net looking for an answer and can't find one. Any know if I missed it somewhere? Thanks in advance.
Try a tablet mod ROM, it has the navigation keys bunched up in the bottom left corner. Hope this helps.
Where?
Appreciate the info. Where do I find that one? I have seen a lot of different ROMs for N7, but nothing denoted as "tablet ROM" and none that have mentioned moving the soft keys as a feature.

Sorry for the n00b questions, but this is my first tablet...where do I change that? I have looked though the settings and have not seen a place to do that. I am running a rooted but (almost) stock ROM. (Manually loaded 4.1.2) And will that change the rest of the viewing area?

Lazarus there is alternatives as well. Team EOS rom allows you to completely hide the softkey interface. I eventually went with gmd gesture control which allows you to hide/show the keys at the flick of your hand, as well as much, much more.
Try the lite version here

This looks like an awesome little app. But I don't see where to hide the nav bar. Is that one of the Pro features? (It is a sweet little app either way.)

This sends me back to JB 4.1.1 though doesn't it? I have already upgraded to 4.1.2 (Though at this point I could not tell you what the difference is other than home screen rotation.) I didn't know 4.1.1 well enough to know it. Only had the tablet a few days.

Might be, it definitely is available in the pro version though.

Rooting the mobile looks so complex compared to my GS2 where It is all automatic and simple. I've read the guide and it's way over my head, I'm sorry but stupid people exist and the guide is not easy to follow in the slightest.
I just want to make it so if I have two fingers side by side and I swipe up and down, it hides and reveals the on screen buttons. Obviously I don't want it to be one finger as you use one finger for many things on the screen, however two would be perfect for this function.
I don't understand why google haven't done or just built hardware buttons in the bottom part that has no function other than a tiny led which should be at the top really. I just want to be able to hide them simply like this without any cumbersome apps installed or having to root and use some crazy rom which is so complex to do on this phone.
Is it possible at all to make the phone function like this?
As far as I know, there's no way to do that on the stock ROM.
You could use either of these toolkits to unlock and root this phone. They're both really easy to use and the instructions are precise.

After unlocking, rooting and installing a custom recovery, you can then flash a ROM that supports expanded desktop. I know paranoidandroid does and perhaps other ROMs do as well. I'm not sure of any of them allow the nav buttons to be hidden by a gesture but there's usually an option in the power menu to expand the desktop and maybe there's even a way to allow gestures to do it with a mod or launcher or something. But that would only be possible on a custom ROM that allows this in the first place.
Edit: Here's another even simpler root solution
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025274
What is the difference between unlock and root and do you have to do both?
Ain't there no way just to like download a registry file like Windows and suddenly it'll have the function?
People always go on about Stock Android but it's ****, touchwiz would never have these stupid onscreen buttons and not let you hide them.
Rooting Nexus devices is literally the SIMPLEST thing to do. Quite simply, if you don't know how to root a Nexus device, you shouldn't have one.

I've used your second link which was easy enough.
However I have no idea how to install a Rom on this device.
Seriously with the GS2 the only thing I can remember doing was using Odin, it was so easy.
Is there nothing easy I can install after this instead of having to load Paranoid Android which I have no clue how to do?

I use secure settings and tasker to hide them while in car dock mode. Works pretty well. Make sure you have the option in the power menu though or you will not be getting out of it unless you have an exit task haha.

I used to have a galaxy s and a galaxy s2. I used to use odin and flash ROMs the way you claim is 'easy'. Trust me, ever since i got my galaxy nexus, and now the N4, the thought of going back to the odin days makes me shudder.
Flashing roms and kernels on nexus devices is so much easier and hassle free. All you need is the custom recovery on your phone and you'll never need to hook it up to a PC again to flash anything. Just download the required ROM files from the thread. Boot into recovery, make a nandroid backup and then flash the ROM zips. Do a full data/cache wipe if needed and you're set.
And by the way, there are much more detailed instructions available in this forum if you care to use the search function.

Do I need to make a Backup? Just this phone has such small storage.
Can't I just flash a stock rom later if I need to send it back?
Trust downloading a file, loading it in Odin and clicking a button is much easier than this lol. Never even knew what Custom Recovery was or any of this stuff lol.
Start learning and reading rather than throwing your hands up exclaiming "it's hard" and walking away.
The info is literally all available in the stickied guide at the top of this forum.
If you try as you read...you'll have no problem doing it.
I've literally sat my incompetent mother down...the woman who didn't realize you had to SWIPE to answer a phone call...and was unable to answercalls for over a year on her Droid X because of it...
I opened my guide and told her to take my stock phone and unlock and get a ROM running on it.
Took her less than an hour.
And touch wiz wouldn't have this stupid implementation?
On screen keys are going to be on more than just nexus devices someday.
You're the one who doesn't understand it.
Post two of the guide.
Get your learn on.
If you think stock android is ****, why bother buying the phone and not an S3? Odin is such a pain in the ass because you have to be tied to a computer and Odin files are upwards of 600mb. How you had an S2 and never used anything other than Odin is amazing because any ROM worth flashing on the i9100 was flashed through recovery.
There is no way to hide the buttons with a gesture. Follow the toolkit to root and unlock, then spend five minutes learning to flash a ROM and flash one with expanded desktop.

Curious about that as well.
SIII is an excellent phone.
I suggest OP returns this one and picks the SIII up.
But actually...
There kind of is a NavBar toggle gesture possibility.
AOKP has a navbar toggle as an "AOKP Action."
You can then use a LMTPie gesture to set that action.
Or wait a couple weeks until the upcoming NavRing without NavBar is finished and use the custom NavRing action to set the toggle...
You can currently do this, really. But turning it back on would require a long press of the power button and tapping the toggle.

I hope you must have learned to root your phone now.
This app - GMD GestureControl will give you an option to use the entire screen, and use various multi-finger gestures instead. However, I am not aware of any single ROM/APP which will give you an option to hide on screen buttons based on gesture.
Your options are:
1. Use an app [forgot the name, will let you know if you are interested], which will disable your onscreen buttons, and then use GMD GestureControl for interacting with the screen.
2. Custom ROM's such as Cyanogenmod, AOKP, PA etc, which have an option to hide your onscreen buttons on long pressing the power button. [ pressing the power button shows the on-screen buttons again].
3. PA additionally has an option to disable/enable on-screen buttons based on the application. [for eg. you can disable it for all games/image viewer etc.]
PS: Please note I am using Galaxy SII and am yet to receive the device. So, whatever I stated is based on reading about it. Haven't really tried any of those stuffs. So, others please correct me if I am wrong.
the aokp rom has aokp actions. nova prime launcher has getsure control that can use the aokp action to toggle dock.
Warning dont do this if you dont know what your doing or how to fix it if something goes wrong, and dont blame me for any Problems that happen to your kindle trying to use this method.
I tested and used this only on the 8.9 Kindle Fire HD and dont know what it will do on a 7, but since the forums are lacking forums for 8.9 (Where is the 8.9 Love?) I guess this is the next best place as it may work for the 7 also but my settings I recommend are for the 8.9 and probably not great for the 7.
I was looking for a way to get rid of the soft key bar that takes up screen space and is just another thing that I disslike about the stock Amazon Interface. I have not found a perfect replacement but I have found one that is pretty decent it is the LMT Launcher(required root) Other then a few visual glitches, like a gap on the right during the notification bar down, and a bar on the right when using key board.
Directions:
1.Download apk from post below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150
2.Install apk in ES File explorer or whatever file program you use.
3. Download and install MoreRecent, if you want recent apps (since Kindle Fire HD is sorely lacking this)
morerecent Play store download link..
4. Run LMT app, Tap start/stop TouchService once, and set Autostart Touchservice enable
5. Setup Pie Control near the bottom of the Settings
Recommended settings by me:
Activation area position left and right
Activation area Thickness 5
Activation area Length 600
Long press time 1000
Animation time 0
Show status infos Disabled
6. Setup Pie Items
Recommended settings by me:
Level 1 for the pie Give you acress to search menu and recent apps using morerecent app, plus a way to kill all apps and go to home. This leaves all 4 of the long press items available for common used apps or anything you want!!
Pie item 1 App select MoreRecent
Pie Item 2 KillAllApps (will close active and go to Home screen) (or replace with your most used app)
pie Item 3 Menu
pie item 4 Search
Level 2 for the Pie Make so swipe downward from left or right will go back, and swipe upward will go back home.
Pie item 1 Home
Pie Item 2 Back
7. Test that it works well and does everything you like and i recommend to restart to make sure it starts up. Testing your most used apps is a good idea to make sure that you can just use the LMT and dont need the amazon Soft Key Bar
8. If everything is working great and their isnt any time that you wish need the amazon bar Load Titanium backup and back up Soft Key Bar then uninstall it, now restart and it should be gone once LMT loads you should have a more clean and easy to use replacement for the the amazon key bar! With alot more settings you can play with!

Yes, I am using LMT on my KFHD 7. I can confirm this works. Also, I forgot who made this, but I DID NOT, if you just add a line in build.prop in the system folder that says "qemu.hw.mainkeys=1" and reboot, you kindle will get rid of the Amazon softkey bar.

I dont know for sure but I belive the app switcher is part of some system files, and I guess that amazon butchered those files..... Using Nova and running recent apps it will change the wall paper (very annoying) So I was forced to try to find another way to change and so far best option i can find is MoreRecent (GB style with more icons) But its kinda ugly with very large icons but at lest it works decently. Would be great if someone could get the stock ICS recent apps to work! (altho I would rather the devs work on a fully working version of cm 10.1).

miztah1999z,
This is slightly off, VERY Close!
What you want to do, is use ES File Explorer or Root Explorer with Superuser Permissions:
Step 1: Using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer navigate to /system/ find build.prop - click on it and choose Text Editor.
Step 2: Scroll Down and find qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 it is about one half the way down the list below ro.sf.lcd.density=240 - Change the 0 to a 1. DO NOT add a second entry! When done the line should look like this:
Code:
ro.sf.lcd.density=240
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
ro.opengles.version=131072
Step 3: Reboot the Kindle
This is a well known edit, this tells Android to NOT display the Qemu Soft-key bar. We edit the soft-key bar all the time, changing the icons and the look of the bar. It is quite easy, you would use ADB to Pull /system/framework-res.apk then use apktools to decompile the apk. Once you decompile the APK you will find inside that one APK is all the Nav Bar icons, you can use a solid Graphics editor like Gimp to edit the icons and a solid XML Editor like IntellaJ IDEA to edit the icon functions. If you do not have an solid understanding of XML DO NOT attempt this edit, instead ask us to create a custom bar for your Kindle. If we get enough requests we will add the custom bars to our software.
We may be adding a few optional nav bars in our software next month. At the moment we are adding the Sony Xloud and Bravia options to the Settings menu so you are able to properly change the Sony Xloud and Bravia settings. Once we are done with the Sony project we will ask all of what YOU would like to have as an option. If you have any ideas please post them.

Secondly, disabling the soft keys in this manner seems to effect the functionality of some apps, for example you loose the access to the settings menu in gplay, meaning you can't access the my apps menu. Wich Is something I like to use.
However. Moving the soft keys app out of system/app has its own negative effect of causing a gap when you pull down the notications and the bottom of the screen. Right now my keyboard is also floating the same distance, its as if its leaving the gap for the softkeys
Any ideas how to fix this while keeping access to the settings menu of gplay?

Which gplay exactly, and what where you doing?
I have made a few adjustments to how I have my Pie setup so level 1 pie has menu button(settings), Killallapps, Morerecent, and search, and home and back on the second pie level, so far my favorite setup as it leaves all the pies long press free to put in apps I use often. but the 2 buttons I use most home and back, are still a quick swipe away to be used. About the visual glitches in the keyboard and notifications That is above my ability, and so far its only visual so it doesn't bother me much.
I use button savior, which has a built-in app switch feature. Only 6 most recent apps are listed but is enough for me.

I have mine set up with qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 and I have no problems with any apps. Perhaps it's because I also have set my dpi to 180. Lemme change some things and see if it affects gplay. I'll get back to this thread in a few.
So, the picture without the options is with the dpi set at 240. The next picture is with the settings @ 180 dpi. Both are with qemu.hw.mainkeys=1.
Hope this helps. If you need help changing your dpi, let me know.

Not really sure what you are trying to ask. I think that you are asking about the navigation keys? They would appear because they would have to. If you want another method of navigation, use ParanoidAndroid. They have a PIE function that will remove your soft keys.
I think your missing what I said.
Its an app for un'rooted phones , it hides the soft keys.. But if you touch the screen they reappear .
so the app is almost pointless in its current state.
So adding things to the app like a gesture for back, home, windows. Etc would be more ideal
I have tried contacting the Dev multiple times. He/she never responds

Most developers will not respond to pm's or emails as too many people try and contact them with personal requests like yours. Your best option is to see if there is a thread discussing the app to ask your question there or you could learn to create/edit apps yourself then you could solve your own problem.
