Help on extracting a keyboard from roms. - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I decided to try out Cataclysm after being on both Ubermallow and Pure Nexus for some time. Problem is, unless I can figure out how to extract the AOSP keyboard from either of those to replace this lacking Google keyboard without the longpress punctuations, I'm going to need to go back. In the past it was as easy as extracting the LatinIME.apk but apparently I've been in cold storage because the ROM zips look nothing like they used to.
So does anyone know how I can extract the keyboard apk from our 6P's roms? Thanks!

There is obviously a way to extract the new format, you can find it somewhere on XDA (hint: SystemExtractor).
Also, why not just back up your current ROM, flash that ROM, boot it and grab the APK?

I tried that. But when I try restoring the keyboard in Cataclysm it just sits there and continues to run and run but never finishes.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

Hmmm. I'd try this. Boot back into your aosp ROM with the keyboard you want. Use a root file browser (I use root browser, I like the simplicity of it) and go into system/apps. Copy the latinIME folder which should contain the latinIME.apk and some libSO files to your SD card. Restore back up of cataclysm ROM. Place latinIME folder from the aosp ROM that's now on your SD card into the /system directory of your phone. While its there make sure you set all the permissions to what they're set to in cataclysm ROM for the folder, the apk and libso files. Then move the folder to to /system/app and overwrite existing file. Reboot and profit?

What "run and run"? You used Titanium backup for that purpose? Overkill...
The post above me pretty much said it all... Just remember to set proper permissions for each file and folder you copy there.

MIUI MMS Size Fix - 1.12.9, 1.12.16 (MMS Size Changed), 2.3.4a

So, i got fed up with dealing with thumbnail MMS for TMOUS while using MIUI, and i dont believe using a different txt messaging app is a viable solution, thus, i took matters into my own hands and edited the UA in the messaging app to NexusOne.
!!!NEW CHANGES!!!
This uses the N95 UA and Uaprof for carrier compatibility reasons.
The MMS Size has been changed to 120000 per request from relldroid
I tested this on my own phone without any issues.
Based off of 1.12.16, 1.12.9 and the latest stable 2.3.4a
Simply boot into CWRecovery and flash like any other update
Let me know of any issues, and i'll try to help as much as possible
Thank you.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Download file for your chosen build
2) Save it to your SDCARD (root dir is the easiest)
3) Boot into CWM Recovery
4) Select "load zip from SDCARD"
5) Select zip file on SDCARD
6) Reboot
-6a) It can be considered safe measure to wipe the cache and Dalvik cache prior to rebooting. No harm no foul
--Alternatively, if you use Rom Manager, you can use that as well. That program works directly with CWM Recovery.
How-To for yourselves
Hard Method;
Req - SystemUI.apk, Framework.apk, MMS.apk (all from the same build, no mismatching) APKManager (google is your friend )
1, install APKManager
2, move SystemUI.apk -> c:\users\*your username here*\APKTool\
3, rename Framework.apk -> 1.apk
4, move 1.apk -? c:\users\*your username here*\APKTool\Framework\
5, move MMS.apk -> ~\apkmanager\place-apk-here-for-editing
6, run apkmanager from the installed directory (instructions of how to run it is with the download)
7, decompile mms.apk
8, within the \projects\ folder, there will be a folder labeled MMS, locate the xml file mms_config
9, edit the string userAgent -> NexusOne (other useagents can also work, NexusOne is a known working one for HD2 + TMOBILE)
10, once edited, compile, hit yes, then yes
11, follow the one screen instructions (it's straight forward)
12, rename the newly created apk unsignedMMS.apk (located in \place-apk-here-for-modding) to MMS.apk
13, place the new MMS.apk into the \system of your phone
14, reboot
Easy method:
Req - latest MMS fix
1, download my latest fix
2, unzip
3, unzip the mms.apk (treating the mms.apk as a zip file)
4, locate mms_config.xml
5, copy to the new mms.apk (again, treating as a zip file
6, move to \system of your phone
7, reboot
Use only the above instructions if you know what you are doing, I take no responsibilities in any damage/issues caused by the provided methods.

Im using JW MIUI 1.4.29 -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050645
How i went about it is that i put the mms.apk in the root of my sd card using ES File Explorer (which supports system rw mounting) then copied the file into \system\app\, overwriting the original.
If you try to install it as a normal apk, it will reject it, since it's a system app

That is one way to resolve the issue, tho thats the gingerbread default mms apk, not the miui verson.
i've replaced the apk in the zip with the one that i'm using for messaging so it should work with miui builds.
...i wish i knew how to make flashable packages

MIUI is a custom android suit, like how sense is for android. It originally started out as a knock off from the iPhone but evolved into something more unique. Go check it out @ www.miuiandroid.com, they update the rom once a week, every friday
Still a novice here....
How do you flash the size fix with the zip file?
Do I just unzip the file using root explorer?q
Force close
I tried everything even pushed through adb and still not working. :l

Soft key color change?

I'm curious if anyone has used Rom Toolbox, and knows if it can change the color of the three soft key colors (you know, back, home, task mgr)? Or do you know how to do this WITHOUT running a ROM. I'm not a big fan of ROMs. I know how to manually replace the boot animation, but figured if ROM Toolbox can do both of these, then I will use it. Either my search skills are very crappy (which I know to be fact, lol) or nobody has ever really posted about this. Any help would be appreciated. These are last two things I need to finish my customizing. Thanks.
EDIT: CRAP! Can a mod move this to the Q&A? That's where I was, and I somehow ended up in the General section, lol. Thanks.
Edit the systemui.apk file, in the res/drawable-hdpi folder all the icons are there.
Custom ROM not needed, just root since it's a system file.

More difficult than thought. I extracted SystemUI.apk from "system/app", replaced the default images with the ones I want to use, zipped it back up, renamed it from SystemUI.zip to SystemUI.apk, and then when I attempted to paste it back into system/app, it wouldn't let me since the folder is read only. I can't seem to change the permissions of "/system/app" so that I can paste this in there. I had a feeling this try wouldn't work, as I got the instructions from a Galaxy Nexus instruction which stated that it would really only work if a deodexed ROM was installed, but figured i'd give it a shot anyway.
I also tried using ROM ToolBox. Created my theme, but it says the theme is incompatible when I try to install it (followed the directions step by step for creating the theme). Looks like I may have to contact the developer of RTB since it would appear that the Nexus 7 isn't supported yet.
"We have compared the images and apps with your current system and have determined that this theme will not work for your current device setup."
Any other thoughts? Am I doing something wrong? Just don't really have a need for a full fledged ROM. Just wanna change 3 little software buttons, lol.
EDIT:
Forgot to mention that I also tried Zip Themer, but like RTB, it doesn't support Nexus 7 yet. I'll be sure to inform both developers
Use root explorer, put the modded apk on your SD then using the phone copy it from SD to /system/app with root explorer and click the mount r/w button at top , or use adb t push it to the device
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
If your rom is odexed (which the stock.rom is), then you will not be able.to achieve what you want...
You will need to deodex your rom before theme'ing

pull it out of a stock or aosp rom, then copy/paste it into /data/local/ or /system/media/. its easier than putting together a zip to flash.
Here you go http://db.tt/FZXC70fK. Note I make no guarantees as to how long the link will be available as I tend to delete files from Dropbox after some time.
It is really easy to create your own zip files. All you need is ES File Explorer or Solid Explorer to extract and pack zip files. And use ZipSigner to sign the zip file. It's a useful skill to learn.
Sent from my Nexus 7
Here ya go, drop in /system/media
For the record almost any boot animation changer on the market will work with The rooted nexus..
I have one very serious.. well maybe not serious just more of WHY does the boot animation matter so much to people.. I never reboot my tablet enough to really care.
anyone know???

[ZIP] [N7,N4] Flashable Zips for Flashaholics

Since I am a registered Flashaholic, I find it very tedious to constantly copy my custom ringtones, notifications and alarms back into my System directory, set the appropriate permissions and reboot after each new ROM. I could leave them on my virtual SD card, but I think they play nicer with all apps when copied into the System Directory.
I have linked the Zip files I created. They were specifically created for the Nexus 4 (N4) (has ringtones) and Nexus 7 (N7) (no ringtones), but if your phone or tablet has the following directory structure: System/Media/Audio/XXX (<--- Where XXX is either alarms, notifications or ringtones), Then these might work for you too.
Additionally I have added new Zips for the N7 & N4 to allow for system files to be flashed. Already in the ZIP are ADOBE FLASH (Installed as a user app) and the Stock ICS browser (Not Chrome), which can play flash files in Jelly Bean. Remove them if you don't want them.
These zip files have some sample stuff already in them.... ... ... OK... They're my ringtones/notifications/alarms. I made them or kanged some of them... ... (Don't Judge! ).
To use your own sounds (.ogg is recommended but .mp3 will work too) just
Download the desired file(s) to your computer.
Modify the zip files for your sounds.
-To modify:
------Open the .zip with an archive program (7zip, WinRAR etc) and dig down the archive to:
system/media/audio/
------Open the folder for the type of sound you want to add and copy in your sounds and/or remove existing sounds.
------Save the zip file. Often this is automagically done by the archiver
Ensure you have the latest TWRP or CWM Recovery installed.
Copy .zip to your SD card
Flash zip file in Recovery
I usually keep the sound zip, Franco's latest kernel zip and Misledz's Nexus Louder in a separate folder on my SD card, when I flash a new ROM I line up gapps and these in Goo Manager and I'm nearly all set up! Best of all, off I dirty flash my next AOKP nightly all my sounds stay the way I set them, ringtones, notifications and alarms!
Download Links are Below.
NOTE: THESE HAVE ONLY BEEN TESTED ON THE NEXUS 4 AND NEXUS 7. FOR OTHER DEVICES, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Have Fun! And Hit Thanks if this Helped you!

[Q] Auto-Rotate no longer works

I am on 4.4.2, rooted, goldeneye26 rom.
I am an idiot, I backed up everything with TB, but before I got around to copying it to my computer, I formated my sdcard because it was having issues
I removed some bloatware and now my phone does not rotate anymore. The issue seems to be tied to the samsung hub being removed
I found this thread, but for a different device, I tried the idea mentioned, getting a file from the rom's zip and moving it to the device, but it did not work for me. ( I was able to move it by getting write permission )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2644293
There is a post later on in there that has a download to a zip file...the zip file contains a library file like in the first link, but also has a META-INF folder with a couple files, I could not find this folder on my phone, could this be something I clash with safestrap since it is a zip?

The META-inf will not be on your phone. In it is what tells the zip file what to do. It is flashable on your phone but I don't know of it will work or not.

It did not work, guess I'll look into manual rotation options, hopefully I can find something. Don't feel like reflashing my rom
I had the same problem before and goldeneye used to have a rotation fix in the add ons section that fixed it I still have the zip on my phone if you need it.
