looking to update my s4 from 4.3 to newer software - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I currently have a very old rom on my phone. I have the mf9 bootloader and mk2 modem running the stockish V3 rom. I would like to jump onto the lollipop software but havent flashed a rom in a while. is there a way for me to update just the modem from 5.1 with out taking the bootloader update as well? I know there was a thread here on xda that had modem updates but its not clear. when it comes to these new modems. only the older ones. just need a point in the right direction to figure it all out. TIA

[Q] Need help on updating

So I've not updated my phone in a while. I decided maybe it was time to update to a more current ROM and I see that there have been a lot of updates and different options now.
I have the ATT S4, running 4.2.2 I337UCUAMF3-SHOstock-V2.3
Kernel: 3.4.0-Jeboo_kernel_v1.5+
Baseband: I337UCUAMDL
I like having a near custom ROM with as little additions as possible. What do I need to update to for the most current roms, or some updates that I need to stay away from. Sorry if this is a bit noobish. I got too far behind on this and all the different levels of updates have me all confused.

If you're running a custom kernel, then that means your bootloader is compatible with the loki exploit, and you should never flash any ODIN package besides MDL and don't flash any zip file that includes bootloaders. Other than that, you can flash any ROM you like. There's a stock prerooted NC1 zip which is the latest stock firmware with no mods but root. Just make sure you flash the version that doesn't include bootloaders and you'll be good to go. I don't know if it includes the kernel in the zip, but if you want to keep your custom kernel then just reflash it afterwards and make sure you flash loki if it doesn't by itself. Additionally, if you upgrade to a 4.4 ROM, I believe you will need to flash a 4.4 modem to get working sound and radio. You can use the flashable zips in RockRatt's thread safely through your recovery.

Should/Can I update my modem and bootloader?

I am on a quite old bootloader and modem as I have not ran any new Roms, or updates to my phone in quite awhile. I was going to try out a new 5.0.1 rom (I am on 4.4.2 now) and was not sure if I would need to update my modem and/or bootloader before I do so.
On SamMobile there is certainly new firmware for my model and carrier, so I was considering flashing the modem and bootloader thru Odin before I try a 5.0.1 rom. Is this recommended/necessary? By flashing a new bootloader, will I lose root or my ability to flash custom roms/kernals/etc?
I tried googling and searching on here first, but could not quite fine the answer. Thank you for any help or guidance.
If you're going to flash a 5.0 touchwiz rom it will update the modem and bootloader I think.
Updating them is not necessary.
People say that flashing newer modems will give you a better signal reception. I have yet to see that "better" signal reception.
You won't lose the ability to flash stuff.
You will only lose root if you flash a stock Samsung rom.

Updating a L720 from 4.3 to 5.0

I have a Sprint L720 running a odexed stock MK2 rom from circa 2013. I followed all the steps back then flashed a custom recovery and the rom for the hotspot capability and am still extremely happy with how it turned out but... I want all those fancy new features lol. I don't really need anyone to hold my hand through the whole process but I did reformat a few times since then and have a couple questions before I start paperweightin' this.
Everything on here is MK2. Software, Baseband & Build. If i wished to flash a newer lolipop rom to my L720 would I need to apply any updates first? Can I flash the new rom from the custom recovery? I attempted to upgrade the firmware through Kies but keep running into a device not recognized error that I suspect is because I'm rooted. Anyway thanks in advance for your time!

Rooted 4.4.2 upgrades

I have another S5 I am running 4.4.2 on and would like to load the MOAR Rom to it. How can I do this and get around the Verizon warning about unapproved software? My phone is rooted and had Safestrap 3.75 right now. I tried to load the MOAR Rom via safestrap and got the unapproved software warning. Thanks! I am a noob with fighting these super locked down things from VZW.
I would lke to know the same thing
This is my recommendation as to i don't care to flash anything higher than OD5. You can flash Muniz_ri's to OC4 and keep root ROM and from there flash away to any ROM in this Forum section and update the firmware by flashing the latest firmware NO Bootloader Zips. Again that's what I do and haven't had any issues and i can Odin back to NCG and "officially" run a KK ROM. Also, I'm currently running the MOAR ROM and on the latest firmware which is PB1. Was running Jrkruse's Norma Note5 ROM but went back to MOAR for the moment....

How is the AT&T Galaxy S4 5.0.1 UCUGOC3 Lollipop Update?

I think this is the newest one that has been rolled out by AT&T?
I am currently rooted and running GoldenEye. Is there any reason to give this up and move to the carrier version now that its been rolled out?

I do not think it is a newest one. After OC3 there was OC4 and then the latest is OK2 I think.
They all are OTA incremental updates. Not an odin flashable full firmware, unless some developers in here cooked the odin flashable firmware.
You need to be at least Kitkat NB1 stock to use this update I think.
If you are happy with goldeneye just stick to it.
