Camera (video) suggestions - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I like Cabrera on this phone photos with proshot are awesome.
However I've not seen many video camera apps, can you guys share which are your favorite and key features if possible thanks.
I'm using default video capture (on benzo ROM) for now but I've not figured out slow motion setting of camera

Cinema FV-5.... it has a lot of the manual controls that are available from Camera FV-5.. one thing I really like is that you can set it fix focus, then have the volume down set to refocus (or you can tap the screen). This will eliminate the Google Camera's tendency to refocus a little bit too often.
As far slow motion, not sure if there are any 3rd party video apps that'll do that.

To do slow motion on this phone its at the top right, right beside the flash icon. You tap it once for 120 and then again for 240 fps

That's the old version of the Google camera.. Not sure how or why you have that. I'd go update it from here.

Thanks, it's a part of ROM and I didn't even bother to try stock android for more than 2 days so didn't even notice it [emoji20]

I mean, it should've updated itself regardless of being stock or not unless you have auto updates off. But you should see the slow motion option now when in video mode, and you may noticed improve photo quality as well.

Proshot has a video mode with manual controls too.
Filmic Pro is great if you want to use your phone for more serious videos.

Does this phone have the ability to take photos while shooting video. My last phone was a htc max one and it was able to do that.

Camera samples?

Can u guys share some samples ? pictures and hd videos, one of the things im most concerned about atrix aside the glossy plastic body is the camera, my god my milestone's camera is horrible! im so mad that the droid bionic got an 8 mp camera
The camera is ok but not great. Compared to the 8mp one on the inspire it can't touch the inspire. I wouldn't depend on it solely but Like I said its just ok.

I absoluterly DO NOT agree with you. I had 3 inspires (for various reasons) and I thought the camera (like every HTC device I have ever owned) was thoroughly dissappointing, especially the flash. Once you figure out the Atrix camera, its very good. I find you need to push it one stop as it tends to underexpose, but some of the images I have taken have been great.
I also believe the quality is better under 5MP than it is on Widescreen

leegoon84, try wiping the camera lens glass clean, I suspect you have a finger print or something on it to cause the haze. Also, determine where bright lights are coming from and use your other hand or something to block that light from hitting the camera - put a shadow over the lens.
You have to clean your lens before you take pictures silly willies!

I also wanted to restate that our lens tends to pick up fingerprints like crazy. The haze is mostly due to that issue... it's annoying but just remember to wipe the lens before photos...

Front camera on Snapchat

I looked for this topic on the Internet, found many people with the same issue, but haven't found any answers.
When I use the front facing camera using the camera app, in medium light conditions, at the beginning, it's a bit dark, but the camera obviously seems to adjust few moments later so that the picture is very clear, and by very clear I mean it's not dark in any way. In the same exact moment and conditions, I open snapchat, the picture on the screen is very very very dark, I can't stress enough on the significant difference between the two pictures. I wonder what is the reason for this? and is it fixable?
Anyone? Is my question unclear?
About the camera.
When you are in a movie hall and come out if it after 2 hours do you see everything clear in a jiffy?
Exactly that way a camera needs to adjust its brightness and exposure..it is a machine anyway..
About the snapchat thing..I couldnt understand it very clear..do you want to say that the brightness does not increase or something..
This maybe a snapchat developer thing..they havent provided us with the exposure settings and stuff..
The same exact way, many camera apps differ from one another..instagram has a better picture quality in lowlight/frontcam than retrica (my opinion).
So it differes from app to app..dev to dev.
Just like Google Camera and Samsung Stock Camera app.
Samsung knows its max so they pitch in 70-80% of the best..
Press Thanks if I helped

Thanks for answering, and yes that's what I meant, the camera does adjust its brightness and exposure in the stock camera app, but not in snapchat, the picture stays very dark. The issue is, it's not a lowlight condition I'm talking about, it's perfectly clear in the stock camera app, but too dark using snapchat. It may be a developer thing after all, so thanks again.
Okay just to be clear, here are pictures i just took with both apps. The room is well lit, can't be normal.

A workaround would be to make the pictures with the normal camera app. Then use the Xposed module "Snapshare" to send the pictures you took to snapchat.

Does your Google Camera have image stabilization?

Hey all, was running AOSiP and Digitalhigh6P ROMs yesterday, and on both of them the Google Camera app had image stabilization. It worked surprisingly well when I played with it for a few minutes- I could shake the phone and the image on the phone hardly moved (didn't take any pics, though)...
Just figured it was an update to the app, but I'm back on Benzo ROM and the option is gone. Wondering if there's something in those ROMs that enables that feature..?
Anyone else have it using the Google Camera app?
It's the same app I have installed for a while, from Open Gapps Pico 1-22-16, so I don't think it's the app itself, but maybe it's the update from the play store

The Nexus 6p does not or ever will have OIS. (Optical Image Stabilization) That would have to be built into the camera hardware. It does have EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) which Google can constantly improve through software. I think what your showing in the screen shot is stabilization for the video camera. You might be running into an ASOP camera app vs. Stock Google camera app situation. You can always delete ASOP camera and download Google camera from playstore. Then you will always have video stabilization.

Yes, I've heard much of the lack of OIS, was just wondering if the image stabilization in the app was any good. I played with it a little bit just shaking the phone, and it seemed to work well, but never took any pictures or video. Even though in the screenie it shows it as "Video stabilization", I had it in regular camera mode just looking at the screen as a viewfinder...
Anyway, I kinda forgot about it, so I'll see if I can get the app with it built in and test it...
Thanks for the reply

Hideous image processing

How could you possibly ruin a picture so much? Not to mention the raw image from the 21mp shot has a much better quality than a frame from a video!
Does anyone know of a way to disable this?
Sony has messed up the camera with lag to launch it and to do a capture... I dont understand really what is the issue to improve that. I have readed that RAM is important.

RAM might be related to the launch issue but where is the problem in just disabling the anti-noise algorithm altogether?

It's nothing short of ridiculous that this phone does not fully support Camera 2 API yet. Sony has been marketing this phone all around the camera but they don't deliver anything.
I'll put up a post on the Sony forums and see how it turns out.

The best camera in the world, isnt? lol
I've noticed when you double tap to zoom in it zooms in A LOT. Meaning you see more noise/blurriness. In other phones when you double tap to zoom it doesn't zoom in as much so it looks sharper. But the camera is actually pretty good, SA sometimes gets it completely wrong in low light situation and the shutter lag is ridiculous. Takes too long to take a picture.

That is literally what I did when I took a bike trip yesterday. Recorded about 1:40 minutes which resulted in almost a gigabyte of video and I extracted exactly 47 still images out of that.
You need a lot of storage but it's a possible workaround. Sad this camera ruins an otherwise great phone.

I tried that camera fv 5 or how it was called actualy, and i was not impressed at all.

Also camera interface sucks, it is okay for auto mode but for manual mode you have to go in settings just to change iso or hdr? Really Sony?

They seemed to have improved it significantly in the Xperia X, which is ridiculous as its specs aren't more powerful than the Z5. They are also advertising 0.6 shutter response from standby and "almost instantaneous" shutter response from normal use of the app. Yet if you look at a few of the MWC demos, you can see the shutter response is faster but it still captures very slightly after... On the show floor there were two demos emphasizing the autofocus and shutter from standby, but few people filming there actually showed the shutter response conclusively.
Third party apps have the potential to have less shutter lag but I found the on-screen camera button and physical button to be often unresponsive, probably because the autofocus is badly optimized.

camera?

I had my essential but returned it due to numerous issues. Have software updates done anything major to the camera? Is it anywhere close to the pixel now?
Nope nor will ever be anything like Pixel camera. It's more like 2015 ish camera quality.

Camera is great with gcam. Stock app is still bad and compresses the pics. They just pushed another update today. I just took a pic using both came and gcam file size was 4.47 mbs while stock app was 1.4 mbs. Not sure why they can fix that but it's never going to be good compressing pics like that.

I had an LG v30 and took multiple pics and showed them to my wife on my laptop. Out of 20 or so comparisons there were only 1 or 2 that she felt looked different and they weren't even that bad.
Is it going to beat the Pixel 2 no. Is it a more than capable phone that takes great pics most of the time, yeah!!
After the recent update it's WAY better than when it launched and I'm actually liking it.
Performance, both visually and functionally, has improved greatly from when I first bought the phone earlier this month after the drop to $499. Pictures are still compressed, would be great if they'd get rid of that, but to my/my wife's eyes, *that* is the difference between GCam and Essential Camera. It's like the pictures it takes are good quality, and then it compresses them down to less-than-good quality. GCam doesn't compress, and is visually nicer, but can be a bit of a pain to get the settings right. For quick/social media pictures, the camera is just fine, and hopefully soon they'll either give an option for disabling compression or just disable it altogether, which would (I believe) drastically increase picture quality. Until then, almost any other camera app that doesn't compress will be better.
Also, I've found the quality of the B&W pictures to be considerably better than they were, and that has also increased the quality of the low-light photos (though they still suffer from the same compression artifacting).
Short answer - if you're able to get it from Amazon for the $400 with the 360 Camera, it's well worth the price. It is an amazing phone for the current price.
Did they add EIS for video recording? If so does it also work I'm google camera?
The issue isn't the lens or optics. The camera hardware is legit.
The problem was the dodgy camera app which Essential has been ACTIVELY fixing and releasing speedy updates for.
I have an Essential; hell I'm writing this post from it right now; and I can tell you that with all the updates that Essential had pushed out, the native camera so had gotten MUCH better.
The stock camera is still about 1-2 updates from being perfect so in the meantime I alterenate between the stock camera app and the Google HDR+ app depending on what I'm doing and the effect I'm going for.
