root and rom recommendations - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello dear forum!
After my nexus 5 broke, I decided to buy the cheapest phone in a similar spec range, and ended up with a used galaxy s4 (i9505). But I really wanted to keep the stock android experience as good as it gets, so my questions are simple: How do I root and install a custom recovery (if needed), and what would be the best rom (if possible with easy updates)?
Also on a side note, is it normal for the screen, when the brightness is set to minimum, to look really weird (i.e. text fades) when scrolling?

Use Odin to root and install a custom recovery. Since you want to change roms you just need to install the recovery. Go to the TWRP site and get the recovery for I9505 and follow the Odin install instrunctions on the site. I recommend using Odin 3.09, since it always worked for me.
Since you want a stock android experience you might try the Marshmallow AOSP rom by the JDCTeam.

WHY INSTALL THE OVERCOME CUSTOM ROM?
Because alterbridge did a smashing job at keeping the OS as stock as possible, he even included a few things like books and the stock music player alongside the samsung one. He kept the kernel stock for people repulsed with custom kernels, and using his rom you'd get amazing speed and battery life, thats the reason its one step over the stock rom.
WHAT IS THE OTHER ADVANTAGE OF INSTALLING THE STOCK THEME OVER THE alterbridge86's ROM?
Because Overcome is fast, lethally fast, and the stock theme removes the irritating and slow dock from the UI, hence taking up lesser memory and speeding up operations more.

I am running overcome 1.2.3 . Check it out in the development thread for 10.1 ..
It works pretty good ! Most likely that you always flash the wrong ROM ..

Galaxy S4 CM 12??

Guys i heard official CM 12 for Galax s4 i9505 released, i wanna install it, the problem is im a completely noob for install custom OS, never done it, im afraid i might brick the phone, can you guy guide me to do this please, current stock version 4.4.2 is very laggy :S
Thanks
Firstly, you have to be rooted.
I used this guide to root my s4. Installation instructions on second post.
Warning: Make sure you have the right model. Do not use CF-Auto-Root if you have an AT&T or VZW branded s4.
After rooting you will need a custom recovery.
There are several custom recoveries. The most popular being ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP).
You can use ROM manager from the play store to install a custom recovery.
Or go here and use that guide.
After rooting and installing a custom recovery you can flash a custom rom. What you need to do when flashing a custom rom depends on the rom itself. See the rom installation instructions for that.
It's not hard if you follow the guides carefully. Or you can as a friend (who is more experienced at this) to help you

You could flash the Google Play Edition ROM found here. I use it myself and it's very stable and haven't encountered any problems so far.
Edit: Only downside is that you can't move apps to sd card. It's not supported yet.

that sucks :. im a heavy app user ,anyways did your phone lagg on stock android? mine is very laggy.. its on 4.4.2
Not able to move apps to sd card is only a problem when you have the 16GB version. But I heard there is some workaround for this.
In my opinion stock rom was pretty fluid. Didn't have any stuttering. Only lag I ever experience was when changing music tracks and the home button lag. But I have the international (unbranded) version of the S4. Which means no carrier bloatware to suck up the power and performance of the phone.
The gpe rom does seem faster and smoother compared to stock firmware.

[Q] Can I install Omni KK over the stock Rooted Lolipop Nexus 7 (2013) FLO

Hey guys I have not seen this in the Q&A section and I want to make sure I do it right.
I only recently rooted my Nexus 7, been running stock but decided I wanted to have Multi Windows like I have on my Note 4. I have not decided on a ROM as I was looking for the best one so I am still running Stock Rooted 5.0.2 I saw Omni ROM and I think that this would be the best ROM to attempt this as I tried the Xposed method and of course got the boot loop.
I see that currently on OmniROM.com that this device is still running on KK 4.4.4 according to the nightlies. I assume I would need to find a KK stock ROM and flash it on to my Nexus to downgrade back to KK in order to install this ROM, or will this install with TWRP even though I'm running Lollipop?
If so does someone have a quick link to the Stock KK files? I used Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit to root my device as I did not feel like going through the same hassel as when I rooted my Droid RAZR so I would just tell that to use those files instead.
I am always flashing ROMs on my Note 4 but I have never gone backwards and I think it was possible to install KK ROM once you upgrade to lolly but not use a lolly ROM if your still on KK.

I don't think anyone has done a compatibility check to see what happens if you run a 4.4 build on a device with 5.x bootloaders. It might work, it might do weird things (usually with sensors/wifi)
Multiwindow never got merged, if you want it you'll have to build for yourself and cherrypick it. There were some remaining issues with the patch we never had time to fix, we got too busy with other stuff, and xplodwild wants to rewrite the whole thing after finding a better way to implement it.

Updating note 4 stock from kitkat to marshmallow

It's been quite a few years since I've done any installs of Roms etc so could do with some help.
I'm looking to upgrade the os on my rooted note 4 on stock rom to a marshmallow rom however I'm looking into using magisk for a systemless root instead of full access.
I'm considering sticking to a stock touchwiz rom unless there is a good one out there i can use instead. I want to stick with touchwiz specifically as I like the multi window feature and wish to be able to use this on other apps other than the ones created for it.
Firstly is there a way to update to a stock rom or decent touchwiz one without odin.
Secondly if I use a custom rom can I install magisk to it so I can use android pay and pokemon go without it causing issues.
Thirdly what limits are there for systemless root? what folders are blocked from access?
Thanks in advance

Some questions about rooting, custom roms etc.

Hello.
First I'd like to say that i haven't ever tried anything like rooting my phone or custom roms so that you know what you're dealing with
Lately I've been bored with my s8 plus(SM-G955F). Was even considering buying a different phone but then i remembered reading about rooting and custom roms so i thought i might give it a try.
I've been reading a bit about rooting and roms but all the information and methods can be a little overwhelming for someone like me who doesn't really know what he's doing. Basically i need help.
While looking for custom rom i'd like to try i settled on renovate ice and i have some questions.
Do i need to root before flashing a custom rom or does the rom come rooted already?
From what i understand i have to start with installing TWRP with odin but what then? root or rom?
Basically if anyone would be kind enough to provide some links with steps i need to take to install that rom and root my device and not mess it up i'd be grateful.
In case you need it I'm on the latest OTA i've received.

Hello there , you do not need to root your to flash a custom rom . All you need is to backup your data for you own safety and flash TWRP recovery through Odin probram . Renovate ice is most famous and stable rom you can try . It has same UI as the stock rom . Little changes only you might wont see me . If you want to change UI you should for another rom . Also root comes with the rom inbuild, specificaly renovate ice has two options to chose, magisk or supersu . Personally i prefer Magisk before through this app ' you can' modify your system, its like xposed framework.

So I installed TWRP like in the video.
Everything seemed to work i had a clean install of stock ore with twrp. When i tried to boot into twrp i had the "only official binaries" bootloop. So i flashed a bootloader and i was stuck on galaxy s8+ screen. Went into download mode to flash stock firmware but can't do anything. Stuck in download mode and can't flash anything now... How do i get out of it?
Edit:
Ok. Found a way to flash the bootloader. now I'm back to "only official binaries" bootloop.
Edit 2:
Ok managed to get everything to work. At least it appears so for now.
Had to flash nougat firmware then installed twrp, rom and root and it worked.
I thought something went wrong because it was very laggy but after rebooting it seems okay. We'll see how it goes from here.
Gonna google it and try to fix it but if anyone has any ideas i'd be grateful
