Can someone please help a NOOB :) - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Im trying to root my Galaxy S5 G900F and having great difficulty as I'm a Noob at this!
I've had a research online and found a few guides and followed one that ended up in my phone looping on a boot screen. I managed to reflash the original firmware and now all appears to be working again. Im rellay not sure where I went wrong so would appreciate if someone could point or link me in the right direction.
Phone - SM-G900F
Android Version - 5.0
Baseband Version - G900FXXU1BOJ1
Do I need to use any particular version of ODIN for the process?
What ROM do I need and where can I find it?
Again I thank you for your help and appreciate that as a noob i'm probably asking some pretty basic stuff that some will enjoy flaming me on but need a push in the right direction. Google didnt help much before

Can you post what you have already tried?
The easiest method (Doesn't work for everyone) is to flash CF Auto Root with ODIN 3.10.7
http://download.chainfire.eu/397/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-klte-kltexx-smg900f.zip
But that can fail and soft brick the phone for newer revisions (Works fine on mine and others, but some refuse to accept it)
The alternative method is to flash TWRP 2.8.7.0 with ODIN, and then flash SuperSU.zip from TWRP recovery
https://dl.twrp.me/klte/twrp-2.8.7.0-klte.img.tar.html
If TWRP fails to flash correctly, which can also happen, uncheck "Auto reboot" in ODIN, and when it completes the flash, unplug the USB from the phone, remove the battery so the phone powers off, put the battery back in, and boot straight to TWRP with Volume Up, Home & Power
Make sure you already have SuperSU.zip on your MicroSD card in the phone ready to flash from TWRP

Thanks for the reply *Detection*
As I'm new I cant post the link but..
I typed this into google...
root galaxy s5 G900FXXU1BOJ1
and it was the first result from a site called nasirtech blogspot
It left me with this....
After flashing I only see "recovery Booting" in blue,
"recovery is not seandroid enforcing" in red,
"set warranty bit" in yellow above the Samsung Galaxy S5 Logo

Is reactivation lock disabled???

From one fellow noob to another, I used this video and it worked great. :good:

That's what can happen when you use CF Auto Root on a device that doesn't like it
Flash a stock ROM again and go for the TWRP method
And when you're searching for your model S5, it's just G900F, the (G900FXXU1BOJ1) you searched for, is actually the ROM, not the phone model
Grab a stock ROM from sammobile .com, instructions are under the download, you need a free account to download and it's pretty slow unfortunately
EDIT - You're in luck, I had one on MEGA

Thanks again Detection!
Does it matter which version of ODIN I use for the TWRP method?
Does the SU.zip file need to be extracted to th ememory card or just put in there?

Always use the latest version of ODIN first, 3.10.7 is the latest atm, if that fails, drop back a version, but generally the latest will always work best
Leave SuperSU.zip zipped, and stick it on the root of your external MicroSD Card, or internal storage, as long as you can access it from TWRP once you get booted into recovery it doesn't really matter where it is, I always use the MicroSD

So this is where I sound really thick... when you say place in the "root of the external MicroSD Card" what do you mean by that? Just place anywhere in the MicroSD Card or a specific folder?

Just directly onto the card, not in any folders, the root = the lowest dir possible, which is say for Windows, directly onto the C:\

Gotcha :good:
Ive downloaded the TWRP file above and it only has a recovery.img file in it..... ODIN does not seem to recognise it. Is that the correct file? Should it not be a recovery.tar.md5 file?

You need the .TAR file, and don't extract it
The one I linked you to is exactly what you need to flash, no changes, just download and flash

tried to root phone, stuck in bootloop (Recovery is not Seandroid Enforcing)

so i tired to root my note 4 (SM-N910F) with this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/orig-development/sm-n910-cf-auto-root-t2897428
- Download and unzip the CF-Auto-Root-....zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar.md5 file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)

download the lolipop firmware of germany ...from sammobile.com/firmwares
put the phone in download mode.....
through odin flash this firmware on your phone....
you have lolipop.... then you will be rooted by exactly the same method which failed you last time
The best, easy and most safe way to fix your problem is to flashing a stock firmware again with odin. Just pull out your battery, put it on again, get in Download mode and flash the Rom with ODIN, let it boot and you will have your phone working again.
Once you get it, download this and extract it until you get a ".tar" file. Put your device in download mode again and flash the tar file. It should be working nice (there could be some random reboots while booting, that's normal for CF-Root process, just wait)
If you can't enter in recovery mode after this, download TWRP for the N910F from here.
Cheers!

Since your device is international it shouldn't have a locked recovery or something so that makes me think that you did something bad in the process. Reflash the rom and root it with the link I put before. If still doesn't work try to install TWRP with odin too and see if the problem dissapears.
please keep quoting me so my email advices me and I can help you fastly.

Yep, download any firm you want no matter of region, just make sure it is for N910F. Sammobile will download really slow if you don't have paid account so I recommend you to find any mirror for it. Once downloaded, flash it with odin and let it boot!
Did you try the root on Kitkat? the CF-Auto root is not compatible with Kitkat, only lollipop (I also had bootloop when tried on Kitkat).
Download this files and try the root process again (this files are from 20.01.2015):

my phone version is 4.4.4 android
First get it back to stock
Hi man,
I would first get the phone back to stock firmware by following the guide on this page:
http://galaxynote4root.com/galaxy-note-4-root/how-to-unroot-galaxy-note-4-with-stock-firmware/
Then Root it by flashing TWRP reovery:
http://galaxynote4root.com/cwmtwrp-recovery/
And via TWRP flash SuperSU:
http://galaxynote4root.com/galaxy-note-4-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-4-using-cwmtwrp-method/
Just follow the instructions and links and you should be fine.
As long as the phone goes into dowload mode you can't really fail this one.
Good luck

I Just Cant do anything to my Note 3 n900w8, WHY?

let me start by saying I've read almost all your threads only reason im actually bothering is because I'm really feeling like smashing my phone to bits .... that's how frustrating this has been. my phone was rooted and custom ROM till about 4 weeks ago, when Tmobile told me the IMEI on my phone was reported as stolen ... i grabbed my box as my phone i have since it was new and compared the IMEI ... to my surprise IMEI on box and on Phone chasis was not same as the one inside phone .... my phone was unblocked by a local unblocking service here in PR so i went to them and surely they took my phone and lent me another one while it was getting fixed ... "IMEI" was being changed again and it wasn't the one on the box either ... the gave me lame excuse about my IMEI .... they kept my note 3 for a week almost 2 after i got it back my note 3 said it was rooted but i couldn't use any apps for rooted phones as it would say i didn't have root access ... as i no longer trust these people i went on and tried fixing the issue myself ... and here's the thing i have tried absolutely everything cf auto root tar from download mode and even thru odin all versions of odin and using the sm-n900w8 cf auto root and the right roms "different one's to see if it was the rom's or the phone" i am about to give up i simply cannot root my phone so that i can install a modified rom ... thought of contacting you guys ... as my last resort ... i am so sorry to bother i know you guys are very busy ... but if you guys cant help i will have to settle for just a regular note 3 and that sucks... i have picture of absolutely everything i have tried and the outcome and the errors i have gotten and all in pics if needed...
Please pardon me for asking for a little help i really thought i could done this i guess i am not as savvy as i have thought...
Thanx in advanced Emilio Pinella
Does the IMEI on the box match the IMEI on the label attached to the battery compartment?
Have you tried using Odin to get back to a completely stock ROM, flash TWRP, and flash supersu from TWRP?
Ok here we go ...
Yes IMEI on box and phone chasis are same ... the different one is when you press *#06# ...
Secondly i have tried usin odin but absolutely all the files i downloaded are in .zip and odin does not recognize any of them i tried to convert from zip to .tar but it crashes odin thats why i have tried it from recovery mode ... even CF auto flash for sm-n900w8 doesnt work odin does recognize phone so it isnt a driver issue ... maybe if i had apropiate files in right format i could try flashing from odin ... but i dont and i cant find the files in .tar which is what odin recognizes ... as i said i have really tried almost everything ... i have been wondering can it be possible these people lock my phone in a way i could not do anything? ... will wait for your replay ... my phone sucks @The Moment i havent downloaded anything as i am factory resseting everytime i try a new method ... just fyi i do activate devops and usb debug after each wipe ...
Use 7zip or WinRAR to extract the zip from sammobile.com. Once unzipped, it should give you a tar. md5 file.
hello again...
well i was certain of my answer but before i started writing i had doubts so i went and open all the files i have for flashing with odin ... and yes none of my .zip files have any .tar files in them , i have no clue why they are zip files if they are intended for use with odin ... so i went to sammobile.com and yes i had downloaded the 3 files pertaining to my cel phone and tried flashing the stock rom but none of them worked ... some just werent recognized and some gave me whole file signature error or signature failed error ...
i have Tesla-hlte-5.1.1.High_Voltage.2.1-Release-20150824 and its a zip and has no .tar, inside also have cm-12.1-20150423-UNOFFICIAL-temasek-hlte-V10.4 and also no .tar inside and its in .zip format, also have X-Note_Build_15_ND5_Public and yes its a zip and no tar inside...
SM-N900W8-4.4.2-(KOT49H.N900W8UBUCNI1) is my original ROM and it does not have .tar inside ....
something they all do have in common is they have an img file inside that cannot be open ...
and i downloaded files for twrp but jajaja also in zip and no tar inside , just an image file wich is not recognized by odin and not recognized by recovery mode either as i have tried putting all these files in my sd card and have tried doing from recovery ending with results of .... whole file signature failed and signature failed error and also wrong footer error i have pic of all this ... would you want me to send them to you i wouldnt mind... btw thx for your time i really apreciate it.
If the files came from sammobile.com, they are defnintely tar. md5 files.
How many times are you unzipping the file from sammobile.com? The original file from sammobile.com should only be unzipped once.
Well after last replay i went and downloaded all 4 available files for my note 3 from the one dating at 2013 to the one with 5.0 lolli i will do this again tonight and will post the results ... i am certain they will be the same as last time but can you please remind me of steps to take using odin and which odin should i use as i have a few versions .
Once again thx for your time .
I like Odin 3.07 which is what I always use.
If you use Odin 3.07, put the phone into download mode, open Odin 3.07, place the tar.md5 file in the PDA box, uncheck everything except f.reset time, connect phone to computer, flash, when you see the word "RESET" in the status window, remove USB cable, remove battery, replace battery, use button to boot into recovery, perform a factory reset, wipe cache, reboot.
Ok
I will do this from home as soon as i get there and i will post results any specific one you would want me to start with?
Start with a rom that matches the bootloader currently on the phone.
Ok
Hmmm is bootloader the number after model example UBUCNC1?
Yeah just checked and bootloader would be for my current 4.4.2 N900W8UBUCNC1 .... Also says that latest firmware is one of the firmware i downloaded the one containing lolli 5.0
So you downloaded the cnc1 from sammobile.com and there is no tar.md5 file after unzipping?
Just got home
I got home im unzipping and i will let you know in about 2 minytes if there are tar.md5 inside what i downloaded ...
Ok so far so good
All have .tar.md5 in them so i will try flashing with same rom version i have 4.4.2 to see if then i can root and flash a cutom rom ... tell you in a few minutes how it went... wish me luck.
ok finished
i finally got to flaSH WITH odin and now my phone is 5.0 lolli ... can you guide me on how to flash root with odin as cf auto root does not work i took picture of what it did when i tried to auto root tell me where to send it .... or can you tell me where or who might have tesla 5.1.1 high voltage rom or X-note in .tar.md5 format ...
once again thanks for your time and understanding all i need now is to be able to root it so that i may install custom rom after i actually find them in .tar.md5 format.
Find twrp here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2494245
Get the latest 2.8.7 or any 2.x.x 4.4 .tar.
Then get SuperSu flashable. You can google that.
Flash twrp with odin.
Flash SuperSU.zip with twrp.
It's rooted.
If you want to flash a custom rom just flash the rom of your choice in twrp. No need to root first.
Sent from my SM-G925F
Root is not required if you want to install a custom ROM, just install a custom recovery. I recommend flashing TWRP.
Find TWRP for your device from here (make sure you download the tar version of TWRP): http://teamw.in/Devices/
Supersu 2.46 is here: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU Download and save Supersu to either the internal or external memory. If you put supersu on an external memory card, power off the phone and put the card into the phone.
Boot the phone into download mode.
Open Odin and uncheck everything except f.reset time.
Click on PDA/AP button and put TWRP into the box.
Connect the phone and flash TWRP in Odin.
When you see the word "RESET" in the status window, remove the USB cable, remove battery, replace battery, boot into recovery, flash Supersu, and reboot.
Ok will do now and tell you if anything ... but i read somewhere this version of android is unflashable ... but i will try what you are saying .
Which version of Android is not flashable?
Ok i gotta say if it wasnt for you i would still be stuck ... fortunetly i am riding 5.0 lolli and my phone is now officially rooted all i need to do is get tesla's 5.1.1 high voltage on it and i will be good ... so basically just need tesla in .tar.md5 to be good ... all thx to you .
Where can i download it or now that i have twrp as my recovery can you guide me thru on that? ... thx again.

Samsung SM-N9005 (without rom) with TWRP v2.8.3.0 can't install any zip by error

Hello to everyone,
The other day my brother bring me his samsung galaxy note 3 sm-N9005 and told me that doesn't work, just only can enter in TWRP (v2.8.3.0) or in download mode. I tried to install a rom and update version of TWRP, but always i have the same message:
checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found
error flashing zip '/sdcard/TWRP/twrp-2.8.7.0-hlte-4.2-img-zip'
Updating partition details...
.. done
When i try to install a ROM from zip file, i have the same problem
I try to generate a md5 file from zip TWRP in computer and then copy to sd card and install from TWRP by sdcard or internal memory of phone, but always i have the same problem.
I dunno what else do. Please can anyone help me?
thanks

Post does not make much sense.
I suggest flash stock rom via Odin first .
There are some major flaws:
1) There is no Android 4.2-designed TWRP for the phone. You must be using wrong file.
2) Why are you trying to install old version?
3) File name is completely wrongly formatted.
For the solution, I assume the phone has or will be having Android 4.4 KitKat or newer.
You have 2 options here:
1) Download twrp-2.8.7.0-hlte-4.4.zip and install it via current TWRP recovery (can not be done in stock recovery).
2) Download twrp-3.0.2-0-hlte.img.tar and install it via ODIN.
This is the site to find the correct files - https://dl.twrp.me/hlte/
To previous poster - Flashing stock firmware does not help achieve his desired result. Just a waste of time.
continue without installing
Hi Someguyfromhell,
Thanks for reply i have some doubts and questions about you reply, but first of all i want to tell you that i dunno anything about android so when you tell me some words i don't understand i'm iOS user.
In point 1) when you say "there is no Android 4.2 TWRP what do you refer? Because in any moment in my first post i don't say anything about 4.2.
In point 2) when you refer to install old version do you refer about TWRP? Well i tried this one, because new ones i can't install by odin. When i do it, and all process finished, phone don't enter in teamwin option, always reboot.
3) Can you explain to me about why file name is wrongly formatted?
Well i tried to install TWRP 3.0.2 by odin, but as i told you, phone don't enter in TWRP application, just appear in main screen where there is samsung galaxy note 3 SM-N9005:
Recovery booting...
Recovery is not seandroind enforcing
set warranty Bit: recovery

I have exactly the same problem. I've watched dozens of videos and even when it shows no md5 file found it still installs. Mine does not I've tried to flash different roms at least 10 times without success. My phone was rooted when I bought it could there be a problem with the routing. Cheers

I don't know where you got such file from though. Does not seem to be an actual zip file if it fails flashing. Or the recovery script is messed up.
TWRP download sites do not have such option at all.

In point 2) when you refer to install old version do you refer about TWRP? Well i tried this one, because new ones i can't install by odin. When i do it, and all process finished, phone don't enter in teamwin option, always reboot.
Well i tried to install TWRP 3.0.2 by odin, but as i told you, phone don't enter in TWRP application, just appear in main screen where there is samsung galaxy note 3 SM-N9005:
Recovery booting...
Recovery is not seandroind enforcing

Try 2.8.7.0-hlte-4.4, that should be working just fine. 3.0 is quite new, might not be fully finished yet.

My bad, that feature is only on 2.8.4.0 and newer recoveries. You will have to flash the recovery with ODIN.
What happens if you try to flash a ROM? (which ROM and send logs)
Also, you do not have to create MD5 file. It is there to check for the archive integrity, isn't the reason for flash failing. Has to be another error.
Hi again,
Well i did process about TWRP V2.8.7.0 as you told me by odin and worked well, so now i have this version of TWRP
Thanks.
About ROMs, I downloaded few ones like:
1) N9005XXUGBOA5_N9005XEOGBOA4_XEO.zip
2) SOKP-L-5.1.1-LMY48B-R4.0-OFFICIAL-20150613-hlte
3) XEC-N9005XXUGBOK6-20160122145457.zip
4) N9005XXUGBNL8 5.0.(7z) ---> This one is 7z file where inside have 4 files: AP_N9005XXUGBNL8_CL3643614_QB3415922_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar; BL_N9005XXUGBNL8_CL3643614_QB3415922_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar; CP_N9005XXUGBNL8_CL3643614_QB3415922_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar and CS_OXA_N9005XXUGBNL8_CL3643614_QB3415922_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
And tried to install, by this process:
1.- Copy 1) , 2) and 3) to ROMs to sdcard in PC, 4) ROM i think that is only for Odin, but i dunno how to do it
2.- Ejecute TWRP in phone, I copy 1) , 2) and 3) ROMs from sdcard_external to internal memory of phone in folder sdcard.
3.- In TWRP i go to Install option and choose the ROMs.
Well so I Tried 3 first and only the 2) tell me succesfull, but then not boot roms, appear a message on the top right that says: "kernel is not seandroid enforcing set warranty Bit: kernel".
with 1) and 3), says me about error, that no MD5:
checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found
error flashing zip '/sdcard/N9005XXUGBOA5_N9005XEOGBOA4_XEO.zip'
Updating partition details...
.. done
How i can obtein logs?
Where i can download a good ROM?
thanks again

First and third are zip files, that are not recovery-flashable - inside the archive are the original firmware files that can be flashed via Odin. Only (custom) ROMs, that have recovery-script inside zip file, can be flashed in TWRP.

Bricked note 4 with CF- Auto-Root, can i revive it?

Ok here's what i did wrong. Tried rooting my SM-N910H with CF-Auto-Root, using the wrong d/l ( CF-Auto-Root-tre3g-tre3gxx-smn910h )
My phone was 6.0.1 and i foolishly flashed this file onto it using Odin ( correct me if i'm wrong but it is an earlier version yes? )
So the upshot is my phone will no longer boot up or boot into recovery as i have the "recovery is not seandroid enforcing" error.
Have looked all over the net to find the solution, but no joy. Have tried d/ling latest stock firmware for my phone and flashing with Odin, but it fails everytime.
I think my biggest prob is trying to find THE RIGHT firmware to fix this. Am i on the right track to try and fix this? Any help would be much appreciated.

Instead of flashing any firmware , try to flash the correct cf auto root file.

Ok well i tried that and that didn't work. However after double checking its seems that i had the correct file in the first place. So what went wrong?
One thing i need to ask. Does your phone NEED to be unlocked in order to root it?
Trex i went to Sammobiles and what my problem is there is WHICH country firmware to i d/l??? there are so many!!! Should any one of them do the trick?

This is the current supersu 2.78-sr1. It's systemless root for all samsung marshmallow firmware.
http://download.chainfire.eu/1003/SuperSU/SR1-SuperSU-v2.78-SR1-20160915123031.zip
1 Download to phone.
2 Boot into recovery.
3 Click install, and find zip that you downloaded.
4. Reboot, All done
Phone will boot loop once. That is normal.
P.S. If this is first time you installed Twrp, I would make a full backup and save it some where.
:good: if that helped.

Well Aaron thats my problem, i can't download it to my phone. The one constant through all this is that i can't turn my phone on as such.
My pc doesn't even recognize it, in fact the only thing that does is Odin, not Kies, not ADB, nothing lol.
I can get the phone into the custom recovery i have flashed (TWRP) and get into "download" mode, but thats it. So where do we go from here?
Ok i have an update on this. PC now sees the phone but only as a modem.

Oh, I misunderstood.
If that's the case. If you can goto download mode, download stock firmware, then flash with Odin.
To get your csc, since you can go in twrp. Use twrp file explorer. copy the file in /efs/imei folder. Thinks it's called mps_code. Copy to ext sd. Now that file should have your csc region code written in it. Read file in pc. That should be firmware you want to download.
See if that helps.

Find the correct version of superSU from the above post..put it in a pen drive or in the memory card via card reader.
Flash it via OTG cable or put back the card n flash
ALRIGHT!!!! Ok guys just a heads up. As you can probably guess my phone is WORKING!!!....so far. Was able to do as you suggested and found the txt file, Using TWRP file browser ,that told me what ver firmware i have, inserted an sd card i had in my Tab S, copied file to that, read in my pc card reader, downloaded and installed said firmware and BADA BING BADA BOOM, all good!! I still am unsure on how this happened. I've rooted 3 HTC phones and my Galalxy Tab S successfully, so it's not like i didn't know what i was doing, 1 question that hasn't been answered though is, must the phone be network unlocked in order to root it? Because thats the one thing i didn't do that i did on the others. Want to thank all you guys for all your help. This was doing my head in and without your direction i probably would not have been able to do this.
Many Thanks.
PS: any one suggest a good rooting method for this phone??? lol

Help recovering data

So I have a friend who decided to mess with his phone, of course without doing a backup, and now he's stuck in a situation that it can't boot even into recovery.
Currently all I see when booting to recovery:
Recovery Booting. . . . .
Set Warranty Bit : recovery
The phone is G900F
He has no idea what version was installed on it before.
I don't need the phone to boot, I need to recover the files on it.
Being a oneplus person myself, I'm not that familiar with samsung phones (my latest samsung was s2).
I've tried to install with odin (3.0.7 - if that matters) the following recoveries:
official twrp 2.8.7
twrp
cwm
All these recoveries showed "Recovery is not seandroid enforcing" message as well as the above when trying to boot into recoveries.
I've tried the official recovery as well:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/sm-g900f-stock-recovery-5-0-lollipop-t3228871
which removed the "seandroid" message, but that's all.
Not sure what I'm missing.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hmm...
I see that your friend messed up his phone very well .....
Hopefully the eMMC memory is not corrupted becuase then only motherboard replacement would be necessary.
Summarising what you wrote:
1. you flashed "official recovery 2.8.7" -> where did you get it from? 2.8.7 is the very old version!
2. you flashed unofficial TWRP very old (2014) recovery (I checked your link)
3. you flashed unofficial CWM very old (2014) recovery (I checked your link)
4. finally you flashed stock, from old OS 5.0 Lollipop recovery provided from entrusted source - nobody reported that it works in the thread.
I listed this for you in order to underline one thing - READ, READ, READ, ASK, ASK, ASK .... before flashing anything to the phone and tell it to your friend.
Le's start with flashing from ODIN ver 3.12.7 (I am using it) this version of TWRP:
twrp-3.1.1-0-klte.img.tar for G900F which is the latest official recovery:
https://twrp.me/samsung/samsunggalaxys5qualcomm.html
Read how to flash it with odin method (when you open the link).
Edit: Are you sure the phone is SM-G900F? Please check model number on the label under battery (inside the phone).
Edit2: When you enter odin mode check phone model version as well - it is provided by installed bootloader.

First, thank you for trying to help me!
Please see attachments:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1euC7-CoBeeUQxTGXQnPPgRE2-5VxFXLh
You can see that it is indeed g900f. I've also checked under the battery.
I've flashed the recovery you asked, however I could not find odin 3.12.7 only 3.12.10, so I've flashed with that (the odin thread on xda does not provide a link for 3.12.7 download).
You can see that it's still not booting with that recovery, it's just stuck at "booting recovery" screen.
I'm thinking perhaps it has a bad bootloader? How would you suggest to proceed?

Ok. Let's continue ... I hope (as I had very similar situation) that the phone is not hardbricked and eMMC memory is not corrupted -> I faced this on my phone and finally had to replace motherboard.
But let's be optimistic:
1. For data recovery - I don't have a silver bullet for this but I found this software: http://www.recover-android-iphone.com/recover-android/how-to-recover-data-bricked-samsung.html
It needs working odin mode so under condition that it supports s5 G900F it should be able to restore some data.
2. For unbricking - I recommend to flash via odin the latest official Samsung stock firmware dedicated to your friend's country/region:
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s5/SM-G900F/
You must be registered to download the software. Link for odin 3.12.7 is available on the bottom of the download page.
Just to underline - odin flash most probably (anybody please confirm that) will wipe your data so be aware of that.
Good luck.

Why a full firmware is needed? Perhaps I can flash only the parts required to get into recovery? I count mount the phone from recovery, that's why it's my priority.
I would like to know also if odin will wipe everything if flashing a full firmware?

Perhaps, yes. But:
1. I don't exactly know what restricts your recovery to run properly. Flashing separate recovery failed.
2. You, for example, could try flashing separately one of the latest bootloaders dedicated to G900F from BL section with odin but I doubt it would help.

Latest available Firmware version for Hong Kong is G900FZHS1CQD1 however I can't find a separate flashable bootloader for you.
Generaly, in my opinion you might try any of the latest bootloaders compatible with SM-G900F phone (here you can find a collection: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54094068&postcount=3, I am on G900FXXS1CQI4) but again:
1. I doubt it will help for entering recovery;
2. I still recommend to flash complete stock firmware to unbrick the phone.
However if you anyway decide to try with a bootloader, flash it with odin from BL section (untick auto reboot). Also turn off the phone before and after flashing and pull out battery for about 30 sec. It happens that bootloader doesn't flash properly at once even the odin says "PASS" so some people reported that they needed to repeat flashing a few times. I managed to flash bootloader at first time.
Unfortunateely the phone is not with me anymore, so I won't be able to continue testing. Thank you anyway for trying to help me! I really appreciate your help!
