I want to try another kernel.
Can I then restore the stock one using nandroid, or will I have to flash the stock rom again?

I think it will restore the stock kernel as it gets the device into its previous state completely.

Go into recovery.
Flash a GB kernel (franco in my case)
reboot into recovery (do not boot into android: menu: Advanced->reboot recovery)
flash GB rom, of restore backup. (backup in my case)
reboot
Worked for me.
I was on ICS. went back to GB using the above method.
Ah kernel first. Okay illl give it a shot thanks

Yes, because then you will have a GB compatible Recovery.

Either stock ROM or cooked. If you use stock, you will have to root again, so make sure you use a stock rom which can actually be rooted or you'll have to flash another. I think it's just easiest to go straight to a cooked ROM.

You cannot flash a stock rom through Recovery, you'll need Odin to flash a Stock ROM.
Hey guys i think there is something wrong with my phone because every time i do nandroid backup and then restore from it i always end up in a bootloop, no matter what rom or kernel i am on... it wasnt happening when i was on gingerbread roms like cm7, it started when i switched to ics rom (cm9) and since then every time i restore from nandroid, the phone ends up in a bootloop... can you guys please help me? If you dont see my sig - heres my specs: Galaxy S I9000 phone running on Slim 3.1 on Icy Glitch B6 kernel. The initial base ROM is KG3 2.3.3 Gingerbread - from there i went to cm7 then slim.
PS: yes ive tried completely wiping everything via Odin but still didnt fix the problem.
Are you restoring the backup using the same rom, cwm version that you used when you ran the backup?
eg if you took a backup of stock jvu, then upgraded to ics, you would need to flash stock jvu, then restore
Sent using TCP/IP
that's right. if you backup in jvu, you can restore only in jvu roms. If you try to restore a JVU backup on another rom, it will bootloop

Well yesterday i nandroid backed up my phone on slim 3.1 then flashed CM9 nightly and didnt like it, so i went to cwm and restored from nandroid and ended up in a bootloop...
Edit: They're both ICS too though.

The only time I have been able to restore successfully is from CM7 to another version of CM7. So flash Slim again, and then restore the nandroid backup.

What the ....?
If you do a complete Android backup, you can restore a jvu rom after flashing jw4. You cannot restore a jvu rom if you flashed a cm or miui from, but always a gingerbread on gingerbread from. Always a ics after flashing a ics rom. I was on icssgs 4.2 and flashed cm9. Restored icssgs without problems. And the same with slim ics....

Really? Because this time I tried going from cm9 back to my slim 3.3 and it bootlooped. I had to wipe data and reflash the slim ROM :/

I have a quick question.
I flashed the franco kernel using franco's app, and also made a backup of my stock kernel using the same app before flashing.
If i decide to revert back to stock kernel, all i'll have to do is flash the stock kernel backup, right? It won't mess anything up?

I'm actually getting ready to flash Franco's Rom now, I figured since the kernel is in the boot image, and if I make a backup with TWRP (doing full since I want to keep my latest changes). Then if I don't like it I can just restore only the boot image portion of it assuming everything else remains the same.

Hi Everyone,
I have stock rom with franco kernel. Yesterday I reverted back to stock kernel and noticed that it lags now when I wake it from the unlock screen. I did a factory reset, but the lag is still there. This was never there when I had it from the begining. Should I flash the factory image?? Can the backup stock kernel get corrupted?

Try _motley's reset kernel, it restores other files that may have been changed too

Edit.. Note the link is the 4.2.2 version, check his thread if you need 4.2.1 reset.

after using franco kernel, you have to reflash your rom then kernel. franco kernel hides tweaks inits ramdisk. flashing another kernel on top will not change this ramdisk, so you have to flash your rom first(no wiping anything).
As I stated above...can I just fastboot then flash the factory image??

You can fastboot flash the OEM boot.img; I'm guessing you fastbooted Franco's kernel?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=&d=1361814949
Flash this reset kernel which has the INITFRAMS.
all will be ok.
You don't have to reflash the whole phone.
Cheers

I suppose I can...however....I currently have a chromebook (ARM)...dunno if I can use fastboot with it. I wanted a solution I could do straight on my phone, like, flashing CWM recovery, then downloading the stock (rooted, CWM flashable) ROM...and flashing it.

Could you clarify this for me, If in the future I need to do it? So, after leaving franco kernel, i.e. If I'm using franco kernel and wanna go back to completely stock again; before flashing stock I'll need to re-flash the current rom that I'm using, to re-flash the rom's kernel and this way replace the ramdisk to the stock from rom? If I'm wrong, please correct me; you guys are awesome!

yes, kinda. reflashing your rom will replace francos ramdisk. all the other kernels use anykernel, so dont have ramdisk included. generally, its only after using franco kernel do you want to do this, the other kernels you can flash right over each other. anykernel kernels grab the available ramdisk. theres plenty of stock/aosp rooted roms here on xda, any of them should work for you.
So, my stock nandroid backup has failed me. I am on Slimbean right now and I like it, but I would like to flash back to stock until all the kinks are worked out. How can I get back to stock touchwiz? I'm not exactly sure what a deodexed ROM is, but it is my understanding that Wallet does not work on one so I would like to be on a ROM that allows wallet.

You could either use Odin to flash the stock rom and be back at square 1, unrooted. Or you could flash crawrj's odexed rooted rom, and Google wallet works on that. Just read up on disabling SEAndroid so you don't get the nag.

That is just what I was reading now. I'm probably going to flash that. I do understand it doesn't come with a kernal, so if I'm on Slimbean can I just wipe and flash the odexed rom over that kernal? If not, how do I get the stock kernal back to flash over?

Good point. Flash Shabbys custom kernel, it's linked in that same thread (crawjr's). So wipe, flash odexed rooted rom, flash kernel. You will need to freeze that SEAndroid app though, don't forget about that.

I used titanium backup to freeze it. You need the pro version to do that though
EDIT: Someone just informed me that the app is in the system/app directory, and is called KNOXAgent.apk. So I supposed you could try deleting/renaming that to disable it without using Titanium backup.

And yes, flash the rom and then kernel in the same recovery session. You currently have an aosp kernel, so I'd doubt it boots if you tried to boot before flashing the kernel.
