OTA Update Download Location (On device)? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm going to preface this with the nagging feeling I may be completely off-base with how I think OTA updates while rooted/custom recovery works, but here goes anyway.
I got my 6P at launch, and immediately went and rooted it. Everything's been fine except for the constant notification that there's an OTA update available. I've got TWRP right now, so just attempting to reboot through the system's standard update installation doesn't do anything.
I thought I'd just grab the manual updates and flash them from the web. I was positive I grabbed the right Before-to-After .zip, but trying to flash it through TWRP just results in it failing. Nothing breaks on the device, it just boots and runs normally, but I'd still like to get these updates installed.
What I'm currently thinking is that instead of chasing down build number update zips, I'd just use the downloaded one specifically and attempt to install it via TWRP. This poses the question:
1. Where does Marshmallow download OTA updates to when it attempts to flash them when you reboot?
and then the follow-ups:
2. Can I even do this via TWRP, or is there a different process that I should use that I've somehow totally missed?
3. Post-OTA update, will I need to re-root? (Not a big deal, just wanting to set my expectations)
Huge thanks in advance for any info you all can provide.

I don't mean to be rude, but there are many threads already posted about this subject. A little searching and you would have found your answer.
Second, you cannot flash OTA's via recovery. You need to download the latest factory images from Google. Then go to Heisenberg's flash/root/unlock tutorial in the General forum and follow section 10 of his guide exactly as he states.

Problem getting 4.2.2 update: "Verification failed"

Hey everyone,
I'm having trouble getting my Nexus 7 to update to 4.2.2. My device is rooted, I recently performed a factory reset.
The update has never appeared in my "System updates" menu, so I looked around and saw that if you force stop "Google Services Framework" and clear its data, the update will appear in "System updates."
It did, but when it finishes downloading, it says "Verification failed."
I tried another factory reset, and I had to again force stop and clear data on "Google Services Framework" to get the update to appear, but again it downloads and say "Verification failed."
I'm stumped now. Do I have to unroot and reroot? Do I have to keep waiting for this update? Do anything with the bootloader? (I really hope not...)
Thanks everyone!
If some files in your system got changed for whatever reason, then you wont be able to update. You can flash the 4.2.1 stock rom and try ota update again.

Is flashing the stock 4.2.1 rom the same thing as doing a factory reset to 4.2.1?
If it isn't, would flashing the 4.2.1 rom wipe my tablet?

If he is trying to do an OTA to 4.2.2, would it not be more straightforward to just flash the 4.2.2 factory image? The OP has already done a factory reset, so it doesn't look like he/she is particularly attached to his current setup.
Also - the language he used was vague - it sort of sounded like the OP observed "verification failed" in the main OS rather than in the recovery. Not sure.
But it doesn't matter - newbs should not be trying to use OTAs on modified /system images or tabs with altered boot images. It's just too detailed a process to describe compactly.
@Horadrius
Before you do anything further, you should back up everything on the "SD Card" to your PC. Yes, all of it. You can throw it away later if you find you didn't need it. But if you follow the instructions for the Google (factory) images install, everything gets wiped off of /data including your pseudo - SD card.
At a minimum, that will allow you to follow the SBS instructions for installing the 4.2.2 factory images, or - you can simply install a 4.2.2 Stock ROM from over in the dev forum.
Whatever you do, start getting in the habit of making backups - and at least occasionally also getting copies of those off of the tablet.
Oh boy, lot of information to digest here....and a lot of questions

Yes, it was the main OS - Settings -> About Tablet -> System Update.
After force stopping Google Services Framework, the update showed up there, and when the download bar reached 100%, it said "verification failed." I did a factory reset, and now when I go to System Update it simply says that my system is up to date.
This makes me think I'm not "supposed" to have the update yet, and that it will arrive, eventually. Yes?

So, no updating the device from System Menu because I'm rooted/unlocked bootloader? I'll have to flash everything as it comes out?

Would Titanium Backup held in this regard? Or simply copy/paste the sdcard folder to my PC?
This whole process has been very frustrating. Is this the price you pay for rooting your device? Making simple system updates into a maze?

Sounds like your download is bad if it fails at this stage. I believe it is saying the checksum of the download file doesn't match whatever is downloaded.
PS. not related to N7, why XDA use the re-captcha which I need to refresh several times to get something I can read

No. It means that for some strange reason, running a checksum program on the downloaded OTA file failed to produce the expected checksum. The most likely way this can happen is that the file is truncated - the download stopped short of the full file. Don't know why this is happening, but there you go. There could be other failure causes that are more rare, but it doesn't mean you are not "supposed" to have the OTA. It means that the download process is failing.
The *stock* recovery does a number of even more sophisticated checking than this; but it appears from your description that the recovery never even gets booted.

Yes and No. An unlocked bootloader causes no problems at all. ANY of the following CAN or WILL cause problems:
- attempting to run an OTA with a custom recovery installed instead of the stock recovery.
- having a modified boot partition (e.g. non-stock kernel, or slightly modified boot partition)
- having altered (or removed!) files in the /system partition that are targeted for patching.
- permissions changes performed by the installer script can cause root functionality to disappear

Not sure what you are asking here, but the basic answer is that if you stay on stock you can certainly apply OTAs easily. If you start altering things, you might or might not be able to apply an OTA; there are simply no guarantees.
[size=+1]OTAs are meant for stock installations - including a stock recovery. PERIOD. While it is possible that an OTA could succeed, it is unreasonable to have the expectation that it will do so.[/size]

I presume you are talking about the future here, as you said that you already did a factory reset at least twice. If you have subsequently added stuff back in, then I suppose you might be talking about the present tense.
But, yes - either TiBu or the Carbon app can be used along with a strategy where you simply back up the apps & data you are interested in, (plus any "flashable zips" that you used to customize your device in the first place), and you simply start from scratch with a factory install followed by re-rooting, and then restore your apps & data (using TiBu or Carbon).
One other thing you can do which is EASY is this: simply wait until a developer/ROM cook publishes a "Stock" flashable ROM based on the release that the OTA is upgrading to. Don't worry about the OTA, just wait a little bit. (These ROMs are already out for the WiFi-only model, BTW).
1) Take a backup as the first thing you do. It's easy and gives you some insurance.
2) Don't wipe (no "factory reset") - just install the Stock ROM over the top of your existing ROM.
that's it. If you were using a custom kernel, re-install it.

Interpret that as you desire. It is unreasonable for you to expect that you can diddle with your phone any way you please, and a patch install upgrade methodology will be robust in the faces of arbitrary changes on your part. You are the person creating the maze, not Google.
Moreover, it is your choice to take an upgrade - it's not mandatory. My guess is your tablet was quite pleasing to you before any OTAs started rolling out. Nobody is forcing you to do anything.
OK, one last thing. It is still possible that a manual OTA can succeed on your phone if it is lightly rooted - but there are no guarantees. The procedure does not require you to wait around until an OTA arrives on your phone, but it is not for the faint-hearted:
1) Download the appropriate Stock OTA File.
2) Re-install the stock recovery onto your tablet. You will have to dig it out of the Google full factory image for the version of the OS you are currently running. (available here)
Code:
fastboot flash recovery factory-4.2.1-recovery.img
3) Soft-boot into a custom recovery, e.g.
Code:
fastboot boot openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-grouper.img
5) Using the command line and adb to communicate with the soft-booted recovery, create a recovery command file:
Code:
C:\myPCsux> adb push 6ece895ecb23.signed-nakasi-JDQ39-from-JOP40D.6ece895e.zip /cache/update.zip
C:\myPCsux> adb shell
# cd /cache/recovery
# cat > command
--update_package=/cache/update.zip
^D # ( that is a Control-D character )
# sync
# reboot recovery
This will either succeed or fail. Based on your comments though, you might just want to overflash a Stock-derived ROM over the top of your existing ROM (a "no-wipe" install).
[ROM][Factory Image][4.2.2] Nakasi -::- Odex, Deodex, Rooted -::- teshxx (02/14/13) <-- NOTE for WiFi (nakasi/grouper) ONLY
good luck with your tab.
Someone once said "Rooting is a lifestyle". There's some truth to that; it eats up your time. Perhaps it is not for you.
Thanks, bftb0.
Looking through your list of reasons for why my OTA might not work, none of them applied to me.
I didn't install any custom recovery (didn't install Clockwork Mod recovery specifically to avoid dealing with flashing roms) or kernels or modify any partitions, nor to my knowledge changed any files in the /system section.
I think I'm going to give this update a week or so to pop up on my update menu before I start tinkering again.
Don't get me wrong - I enjoy this kind of tinkering, and all the perks of rooting, but my knowledge is extremely limited, which is what makes it frustrating trying to find information. The only thing I've done before this is install Cyanogen on my HP Touchpad.
Anyway, do I need to install CWM recovery to flash (overflash?) that 4.2.2 rom you linked?
if you haven't done anything other than rooting(i.e. copying a file su to it), OTA would go through. Your problem is about the download process. It can go wrong for many reasons from the download is bad to what saved to the temp area(where the download is) is bad(rare but still possible).

That's all I've done, root and unlock bootloader. The download only showed up when I cleared data and force stopped the "Google Services Framework" process. I reboot the system, and check for the update and nothing is there.
well, sounds like you have to flash it manually using fastboot then.
That said, I myself have no intention of doing the update any time soon as I don't find any specific problem with 4.2.1 and there isn't any specific feature i want in 4.2.2

TL;DR Yes and No.
People that use toolkits seem to use hard-flashed installs of custom recoveries, as they don't really understand what goes on under the hood, even if the toolkit offers them a means to soft-boot any image the toolkit operator downloads. (I assume that the toolkits probably allow this; as I don't use them I don't know for sure.)
What I am saying is that the answer depends on your knowledge. So long as you have an unlocked bootloader, you can soft-boot any boot image you like - including custom recoveries.. (This also pre-supposes correctly-functioning device drivers, but that is a Windows/user training issue, it has nothing to do with Android).
When I say soft-boot, I mean that the image is transferred to the tablet, which then hands over control and starts executing that image - but it is not "flashed" to Flash memory, so the next time a boot occurs, the same boot images are still stored in either "boot" or "recovery".
In this configuration, the phone should be much more likely to complete an OTA as it will have the stock recovery present most of the time, and only temporarily present when you attach to your PC and kick things off with a custom recovery.
The OTA could still fail, but it probably would succeed for a very lightly rooted stock configuration (other than problems with losing root).
The only downside to this arrangement is that you can't be flashing roms or making nandroid backups or other forms of rooter activities when you are away from the PC.
For the IT-OCD or obsessive ROM hopper, that could be a good thing.
good luck... the rest is up to you.
Ok, I installed Clockwork Mod from a toolkit because going into fastboot and choosing "Recovery mode" led me to a picture of the Android guy with a red triangle on his back saying "No Command."
I'm just going to install 4.2.2 myself now. Question regarding that link - odex/deodexed - I looked up the difference but can't tell which one is appropriate for me - I'm guessing it's odex because that seems to be closer to stock.
Edit: It worked! Thanks for your assistance, everyone!
IMO, google should not ship odex image now that we have fast enough hardware. odex is just a form of 'pre-compilation' which only benefit first time load(or when the cache is cleared). Too little gain for such a complicated setup.

[How-To] Install OTA Update on after Root/Custom Recovery

*Now Working for 4.3 Update* Will require an up-to-date install of 4.1.x first and then after re-boot, it will update to 4.3 (read post on next page).
Warning:
Because of of how weird step 7 was, I'd recommend NOT INSTALLING THE OTA and just waiting for a ROM to have the changes incorporated. This is the last time I'll install an OTA I think as the whole thing was sketchy at best. However, if you just insist doing the OTA, that's how I did it. It may not work for you. You'll probably brick your phone as I may have just gotten lucky.
Background:
I'm certainly not a developer but can wiggle my way around XDA and figure out what to do and how to do it from time to time without having to ask too many questions. This morning I got the notification that an OTA (over the air) Update was available for my HTC One Dev Edition (running the stock ROM) and I simply downloaded it and tried to flash the zip in Clockwork like I've done with countless other updated nightlies on various phones. It didn't work.
Solution:
I figured out after researching that the custom recovery wouldn't allow the OTA to be flashed and that the stock recovery would be needed to flash the OTA update. I also realized that it took a bunch of different threads to figure out how to make it all work and there didn't seem to be one thread on the HTC One forum that discussed how to do it so I figured I may as well write up what I did to help someone else--after all, so many folks have helped me on this forum and I've rarely had much to contribute of any real depth anyway--just repeating what others already had taught me.
How to:
You need to re-flash the original recovery to your phone so that CWM or TWRP are no longer your recovery. Obviously, now is the time to do a backup and I'd put it somewhere other than on the phone in case you really mess this up.
1. Get the stock recovery bits here https://www.dropbox.com/s/9wbux6a4kn0ndz9/StockRecovery-signed.zip
2. You'll need to un-pack the rar and there is a text file that has the instructions.
3. Of course, I didn't follow the instructions, I just plugged my phone into USB with debugging on and fired up cmd, changed into the directory where I extracted the files, cd'd into fastboot and typed "adb reboot bootloader" and waited until the phone rebooted into bootloader
4. I typed "fastboot devices" and hit enter to make sure I was connected to the phone still
5. Cd.. to get back to where the .bat files are and type install-recovery-windows.bat and the stock recovery is flashed to your HTC One.
6. Now unplug the thing and reboot and you'll get the notification again that the OTA update is ready to install and it will start to install.
7. Mine locked up. That's right, the damn OTA update stopped at about 1/4 of the way through. I figured I bricked the phone. I always figure I bricked it if something doesn't go exactly how I thought it would but I've never actually done it to any of my 6 or so devices. Then I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2306996&page=2 and I turned off the phone by holding down the power and restarting it. It got all the way through and hung again so I reset the phone again. Then, it rebooted a few times and looked like it was going to never work right again, but I just let it keep rebooting and left it be and after a few minutes, less than 10, probably more than 5, I was back up and running and saw the android applications updating as expected after an update.
8. Now you'll want to re-flash your custom rom (TWRP, CWM) and I did that with Hasoon's All-in-one tool.
9. Re-get Root. You can do that with Hasoon's tool I suppose or however you prefer to root.
AGAIN:

I appreciate you writing this up. It seems like I've never been able to find a good solution to installing the OTA updates post-root. That being said, do you have any idea what happened in Step 7 that made it finally work? I just don't understand how doing the same thing over and over finally just worked. I really have no idea why Step 7 got so strange. The only thing that gave me a warm fuzzy whatsoever was that others were reporting that it was hanging and they just rebooted the phone over and over until it got all the way through the process. It could have something to do with the stock recovery for all I know--a bug perhaps. Again, it made me nervous and I won't do it again. I only did the write up so folks could see what happens and make a call whether or not they wanted to try it themselves and see the steps all on one page instead of getting stuck like I did and then finding the rest of the steps. That part sucked. At least you'll know what you're getting into though. Good luck one way or the other. Please post up if you do go through with it and what your results are.

I'm thinking I'll give it a go. I'll do a nandroid backup and store it on my pc. Worst case scenario, I'll just start over from scratch, re-root, and restore my backup. I'll make sure to report my results.
I just makes me wonder why bother using the OTA update if you already went through rooting and flashing custom recovery? It's just one step more to flash the custom ROM and at least you will get constant updates with the developer who created the custom ROM. To me it seems like you either stay stock if you want OTA updates or go the whole hog and use custom ROMs. Just my 2 cents.

Well, in my case, I purchased the Dev edition straight from HTC so I automatically have a de-bloated OS from HTC instead of the ATT ROM that I would have gotten had I purchased the phone from the ATT Store. In that case, I'd no question have a custom ROM from the forum. I just didn't see the need this time around. I would have left the stock recovery, but I do like to make backups so ClockworkMod is something I can't live without. I suppose there are others in that same boat but they are probably few and far between. Really, I just hate to update my ROM since the phone is working how I want at the moment. It's hard to justify just blowing away a functioning OS, setting up everything again, etc. but I may do it again if the OTAs come frequently and/or the process is as strange as it was this past go around.

AGAIN:
Because of of how weird step 7 was, I'd recommend NOT INSTALLING THE OTA and just waiting for a ROM to have the changes incorporated. This is the last time I'll install an OTA I think as the whole thing was sketchy at best. However, if you just insist doing the OTA, that's how I did it. It may not work for you. You'll probably brick your phone as I may have just gotten lucky.
Hopefully someone will come up with a better way to do this and start a new thread and we can delete this one forever.

Just find a stock recovery for 802w, flash it to your phone and you should be fine to to OTA. The original post didn't mention if he's using 802w. If he's not, then the recovery.img can't be used for 802w.
How to get s_off , supercid 11111111
and return to s_on with supercid ?please tell me quickly
Thanks for all friends

I haven't been able to get this to work. I flashed back to the stock recovery, but when I attempt to install the update it gets about half way through before rebooting. It goes back into recovery, starts installing again, but then stops and just shows a red triangle with an exclamation mark. I can get the phone to reboot by holding the power button for 10 seconds, which boots it up normally. When it gets up and running, it's like nothing ever happened, but then the update notification reappears.

I'm experiencing the same thing, can't seem to find anything about it...
With the new 4.3 rolling out on the Dev editions, I decided it was time to try this again. What I found was I had to update to a something prior to the new 4.3. In other words, it was still one of the 1.29 streams that updated first and did just like the last time I did this. The thing stopped, locked up, had to hold the power button down, locked up again, reset again, then it was fine. As soon as the phone booted, the 4.3 update was available and I installed that without any issues. So, the method above still works and even with the weirdness I felt a little better this go around.
Good luck.

I haven't really checked this thread in weeks. I'm not sure what an 802w is. If you can clarify, I'll check and post.
Totally ran just fine
I had to as stated roll back to the attached recovery, did that with fastboot and no problems, then restarted the phone, then had it start the OTA update, then read around debating if I want CWM or TeamWin, but before I notice, the progress bar got up past half way. Looked away for what must've been less than 5 minutes until it vibrated and was restarting itself. It restarted again, and then it loaded and updated all the apps... Seemed like the smoothest rooted update I've ever done, no forced restarting or anything!
I just bought my HTC One last friday, and I think I screwed up things a little bit, because the first thing I did after I charged it, was updating everything to 4.3, before unlocking the bootloader, getting s-off and before rooting the phone. So I ended up with the latest 4.3 on my phone, but it was a pain in the ass to root it properly. I was able to unlock the bootloader, but something must be different with the way 4.3 treats the internal storage distribution, because I was only able to get root, using TWRP and the latest version of SuperSu, but I wasn´t able to install Busybox.
It's a little bit weird, because although I was able to use Titaniumbackup to install some apps, apps like OTA Rootkeeper don't work properly. I also lost the stock calculator, flashlight and voice recorder, but I was able to install older versions again.
I think the only thing I regret is not getting s-off first, but I think this will only mean that I will have to wait for a revone update, or I will have to flash the boot.img after flashing a custom rom as I always did with my One X.

That is not the one I have then.
I have a rooted HTC one with stock rom. I relock the bootloader and I also have stock recovery.
I am on 4.19.401.5 version.
So, will it be possible for me to have new OTA update including Sense 6?
Should I install the missing applications also, like calculator and flashlight?

can someone please help?

I'm trying to update my wife's N7 to 4.3. She used a toolkit to root and has TWRP recovery. Everything else is stock. So first I downloaded the 4.3 update and attempted to flash, but immediately after choosing "install" I received a message the the flash failed. I thought maybe I got a bad download, so I rebooted the device and forced an OTA. The device downloaded the OTA, but then rebooted to TWRP and didn't install. Then I thought maybe I need to have stock recovery... So I unrooted, and installed stock recovery. I then forced the OTA again, downloaded, and began to install in stock recovery, and approximately halfway through it stopped and gave an error message. Then the device rebooted on it's own. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I was able to update to 4.3 on my N4 without any issues. Does anyone have a solution for me? Please let me know if there is some detail I left out. Thanks!
You can use fastboot to erase your current partitions then manually flash the 4.3 stock images.
I've never used fastboot before. Plus another problem now... I tried to flash the stock image via toolkit, now the device is stuck on the bootloader.

On the bootloader or the boot animation? Big difference.
There was a recent change in fastboot that makes flashing the 4.3 images a little dicey if you're not using the latest fastboot executable, which I imagine could cause problems with various toolkits that bundle the executable.

On the bootloader. I can't get past the google splash screen, but it overlays the bootloader screen. I just want to get back to stock, then upgrade to 4.3. I've tried to install adb on my computer, but couldn't get the computer to recognize the device.

You can either flash stock images with fastboot or install TWRP then flash stock zip file.

First of all I do not intend to offend you. I am not lecturing. I just want to give you my opinion in order to try to help you.
In general to install an update the safest way is to have or re-install stock recovery prior to the installation of the update. There is no need to unroot for the stock recovery installation.
In your household you have Nexus products. It means that you will probably continue to acquire Nexus equipment. In this case, in the long run, you will be better off installing, learning, and using adb and fastboot methods. Toolkits are mostly a quick fix which works ...............or not. I am thinking that toolkits are useless in the sense that they do not bring knowledge and experience (in my area trash collection are Monday and Thursday:laugh.
The XDA forum is full of resources. It does not leave a stone unturned. Its a matter of reading, asking, and learning.
In your case, facing your problem, I would install adb through a program called "android-sdk- windows". Then I will take advantage of the experience and the knowledge of our forum members to install the JB 4.3 factory image.
here are two references among several:

But it is a long way for a beginner - which I was 2-3 years ago - to go this route. But what a reward!

Thank you for the information, and I'm not offended at all. I spent most of last night reading, and attempting to get adb running on my computer. I experienced issues getting drivers installed, and the computer recognizing the device. Also, trying to find the directories... I'll keep searching to see if I can get this figured out. Thank you again!
Thanks to everyone for helping me through this problem. After a lot of searching, research, reading, and video tutorials, I flashed stock images to the N7 via fastboot. I always thought that adb and fastboot was way too advanced for me (and it probably still is), but at least I got the basics down. Thank you all again.

[Q] Phone has no recovery and other issues.

First want to say hi and that this site is full of knowledge so any help with my subject will be great.
Got a att s4 sgh-i337 phone. I rooted it before the lollipop ota update was out and everything went fine. Then the lollipop update came out and I followed one of the methods on keeping root and updating to 5.0.1 lollipop on the phone. Everything went fine with that. Still showed root status and never did the phone brick or have any issues in the updating.
At some point though, I did run triangle away because I would have the custom logo and opened padlock when the phone would boot up. I knew it wasn't a huge deal but the counter showed correct and never could just figure out how to get it to go away. Either way, I did run it and I think rebooting twice, the factory loading image came back to it. Now it shows my current status as 0 for the counter and the binary is Official.
I have not tried to load any roms or nothing like this to the phone, just followed the instructions to give it root access so I could run a few different apps and adaway for when I listen to Spotify.
One day, I was trying to install a new version of Words with Friends and it failed because I think wwf was open, but I did go back and install it. For some reason now, my phone never notifies my with a wwf notification when somebody plays me. Every now and then, it might pop up when I restart the phone but that is it. I don't think facebook notifies me everytime also but was more worried about words with friends.
Searching google, it says to go into recovery mode and flash the cache of the phone there. I have done the cache memory in the phone but that has not fixed my problem. When trying to go to recovery, it never works, it would always show, recovery booting and then load the phone up as normal.
I have download quick boot and rom manager since they all have an option to boot into recovery rather than pressing the buttons but it always does the same thing. Reading the web though, it seemed like I needed to install a different recovery than the factory I guess, so using rom manager, I tried twrp and that didn't work so I installed ClockworldMod 6.0.4.7. Rom manager shows that as the current recovery method.
When I try to boot into recovery, it still shows that recovery is booting and then goes straight to loading the phone as it should normally.
Now though, every time I restart my phone, it says recovery is trying to boot but never does.
How do I fix my phone to be able to boot into recovery and it not try to boot every time it powers on. I have tried searching google but I just just can find an answer to my direct problem. I know how to hold the buttons and go to recovery but does not work, and I also know how to get to it from the different app programs(rom manager and quick boot) but they do not work either. It would be nice to get the wwf notifications to work properly again also.
If you need any information from my phone, please ask. Thanks for any help on my matter,
Charlie
Odin stock and start over.
Apparently, you are not aware that the boot loader is locked, preventing the installation of a custom kernel. You can not use twrp, or rom manager. Rom manager itself may cause issues.
I agree you should flash back to stock and start over to get a clean install. Hopefully, this will solve the issues with notifications as well. You can use the "[GUIDE]Odin to Stock, Updating, Rooting, and Installing Safestrap" by guut13 in the general forum for files and instructions.

Thanks for the replies guys, I really don't know a whole lot about rooting other than following instructions about it. I was unaware you could not use the twrp or cwr as a recovery. My recovery did not work before so that is why I was trying to install those. I knew you could not install custom roms but I did not know that you could not use rom manager to install custom recoveries.
I appreciate the help so far and I will look into that thread you mentioned. I haven't read it but will this take me back to stock lollipop 5.0.1 and I just reinstall apps or will I have to re-root the phone.
Charlie
please delete, sorry
Charlie
You have to go back to 4.4.4, to the nb1 base, root with towelroot, and then use the keeproot method to get back to 5.0.1 rooted. The instructions are in the guide, and also a link to the keeproot thread is there.
By the way, for future reference, questions, help and troubleshooting issues should go in the Q&A forum, not the general forum.
not having any luck
Ok guys,
I am trying to follow the guide but not having much luck.
I downloaded the I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Stock_Odin_tar and put it in the AP Odin file. I'm not sure if I should be using it or the other file named I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Rootable_Stock_Odin_tar to begin with. The instructions said to use the first one so that is the one I was trying to use.
After putting the first file in the AP slot of Odin and hitting start, it begins to try to do it's thing and then says it fails!
What do I do now? Am I doing something wrong or what because I'm trying to follow instructions but not having much luck.
Please help. Sorry for posting in the wrong area also in the beginning.
Charlie
I'm screwed
Now when I turn my phone on, it says Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again?
doing better now
Pretty sure I got it going finally. I changed cords and then changed ports on my computer and it finally did go back to stock without an error. I'm currently back on Lollipop and rooted so now is the fun of reinstalling contact info and anything else. So far I have not rebooted but it was not showing the recovery booting option when it did reboot. Hoping my notifications work properly now also!
Thanks!!!
Charlie

Broken Wifi, Recovery img after botched OTA upgrade & restore-to-stock

Hi, I'm new to ROM flashing etc. and seem to have gotten myself in trouble.
I bought a used Moto X Pure (XT1575 model) with, I guess, the Motorola unlocked bootloader and TWRP already installed. I accidentally approved an OTA update this afternoon and ended up in a boot-loop.
In trying to fix it I used the "restore-to-stock tool" for windows found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...ndows-tool-moto-x-style-pure-edition-t3199905
This was semi-successful; the OS loaded and I was able to begin migrating my old apps, but
(1) the wi-fi doesn't work at all! I can't turn it on in settings -- the slider will slide on but then slide back off by itself
(2) the recovery image seems screwed up; I can't get into recovery mode, and get an error there instead.
I am at a loss as to what to do but see my last resort in using fastboot to upgrade to the 6.0 stock image as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/development/pure-firmware-tuff-wip-t3224833
I'm too tired to try tonight, so I thought I'd ask for advice before I go to bed. What are my options here, especially if the upgrade to 6.0 creates new problems? Can I get error meessages for the wireless so I at least know what's going on? Can I reflash the wireless firmware -- might it have been messed up if one or another upgrade was interrupted somehow?
Also -- hope I'm in the right forum -- please point me in the right direction if I'm not!
Many thanks for the help!

Oh man, I had NOT read far enough in that thread. The solution was simply to reflash the modem,
Code:
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
Just did it and the wifi issue seems to be fixed!
How should I approach the crashed recovery partition? When I got the phone, TWRP was installed as well as SuperSU. I tried the restore-to-stock tool mostly because of the problem with OTA updates being so frustrating; but I wouldn't object to reinstalling TWRP and SuperSU, if I knew how to get and install new images within a few days of the OTA update arriving (I have been deferring the last OTA update since the day I got the phone, a month ago -- I was bound to make a typing error eventually, and it happened yesterday). Anyway, if you can point me in the right direction for learning that stuff I'd be grateful.
So psyched to have wifi working! THank you!
There's a twrp thread in og dev
