I've been running Mimicry 1.5 for quite a while now (and very happy with it) but I'm interested in the Slim Bean thing; it looks pretty cool. I'm not clear on the advantages though (if any). Can someone fill me in?
Well we are talking jb vs ics for one, I would suggest making a nandroid and try it out, if you don't like it restore nandroid and the worse thing you can say is you wasted 20 min of your life...

I agree to the post above.
I've tried both roms and I prefered the SlimBean Rom It is very smooth and personally I've had some problems with mimicry. For me it is the best JB Rom I've ever tried
Good luck
I've been on mimicry (every release) since this new rom few days ago, and i didn't have so many problems with it: some casual hot reboots, or really little and stupid issues, same as slimbean, but we have to consider this is the first release.
There aren't big differences on usage between those roms ( except for OS features ofc); BUT, this rom i found it slim for real: smooth like mimicry at least, faster on response and better battery life.
So, i agree with the users above: if u liked mimicry take a nandroid backup, and give slimbean a shot!
Mimicry 1.5 is faster
you can try to install 15 same aplication on you phone and than you can see wich one is faster Mimicry 1.5 or slim bean
running right now slim bean,
was very happy at the beginning with all the features and the speed. But after restoring my backup (70 apps with mybackup-pro) the SlimBean Rom is getting sometimes really slow. Not always, but browser is sometimes not reacting or I get system FC or the phone is not waking up or apps are not responding.
With CM10.1 v21 I had installed 200+ Apps, the phone was a little bit slower but responding to all my actions and phone buttons.
Hopefully flinny integrates in v23 a few SlimBean features.
Tried slimbean but unfortunately I can't seem to get it to run smoothly - things start hanging and frequently memory seems very tight, even when I'm running nothing but the core gapps with it. Darn shame too, I'm quite fond of many of the look&feel updates.
I'm not altogether sure what I could do to tweak things further; I have system and data partitions formatted to ext4, made sure I did a full format/wipe, immediately did the switch to 240dpi before touching anything... I'm not quite sure how to tell what all's being loaded beyond looking at Running Apps, maybe I could trim things down if I fiddle with the "Performance" option in settings, but I don't know a lot about that. Seems odd that Play Music is running all the bloody time.
Mimicry 1.5 runs very smooth for me - Google+ and Facebook used to hog up memory but Greenify seems to have taken care of that.

Try limiting the number of background processes (under developer options) to 2; may be a total illusion, but I think it made things much better for me.

I'll give that a shot, thanks!
Hrm. Oddly, I've just noticed the Camera app is missing. I somewhat suspect (but haven't tested) that it might have been left out of 6.2, as one person in the Development thread mentioned it missing but others have not, and I'm guessing he loaded 6.2 straight up (as I have) and most folks upgraded from 6 to 6.2.
Is there a way to backup/restore one's Settings? I find that's the tedious part about reflashing - I bet there's a tool for it I'm just unfamiliar with.
i think there is an option in mybackup to save system-settings and restore them later. and i use nova-launcher, which allows me to save all the homescreens but without the widgets.

Ah ha. Fixed when I did a FORMAT of System and Data instead of just a wipe of them (using 4EXT Recovery Control). Another rookie mistake on my part...
I try a lot of roms, now I using SlimBean. Fast, modern and without big errors.
good question!
I wish to know too. I use to run mimicry, but since a few month I can't get tired of Venom viperZ. Since the 1.x version, I have absolutely NO issue.
The 2.0 is really fast and usable.
I"ll maybe try slimbean if there's so much good review on that one.
Just for an update from myself, I tried SlimBean 6.2 and ended up having a significant slowdown issue after several days; long pauses on most items and Google Search in particular became so slow as to be unusable. Oddly there was also a significant delay when starting up the Torch from the widget, which happens to be one of my most-used functions of the phone. 6.2 also uses Hangouts rather than Talk, and my hatred for Hangouts still burns like an unquenchable fire. Still, looking at the slimbean.net site the torch issue at least seems to have been fixed, so if blk_jack is kind enough to bless us with a new SlimBean ROM I'll probably try it again.
I have been using Flinny's CM10.1 Andromadus test build 24 for several days now but I am starting to see a slowdown there too occasionally, again especially with Google Search. Generally though I'm very fond of it, good chunk of free memory most times and it even runs Ingress pretty well, which is the one game/app I run that pushes my phone to its very limits.
I noticed someone mention "kbeezie's data swap mod" in the SlimBean thread and plan to investigate that when I have time, though I suspect I may need something faster than my class 4 32gb card (class 10 ones are pretty cheap now, but I'm somewhat poor, so).
I'm not gonna cry if I have to go back to Mimicry 1.5, which still has my love, even if the new JB builds are shiny and have some pretty cool UI enhancements.

welcome to android world.
I never seen any android rom that keep his original speed after a while of use.
even on recent devices, such as s3. You should reflash the rom.zip every time your rom is going laggy.

Google released nexus 5, and as you know it contains the brand new Android version KitKat.
Apperently google has make it compatible with old phones (such as ours) even those with as low as 512mb RAM.
It uses 60% less memory than JellyBean!
So let's just wait for the sources to be released D

Yip! No reason for me to get a new device, the software just keeps getting better
That's only about ram, how about cpu, gpu and so on?

The GPU load can be reduced to a level better suited to our phone, I'm already doing this on CM 9.1.
The CPU however will be interesting to see, but the two (memory footprint and CPU load) go together in some cases
Regardless of that though, more than likely Google would not have made the effort of giving 4.4 such a small memory footprint for the sake of old devices* if they did not also make sure it is perfectly capable of being run on comparable CPUs.
*They explicitly stated that was the intention.
Where did you get the statistic that it uses 60% less memory than Jelly Bean ? @david234000

@david234000
Our GPU is still decent, but still below a tier of the second best GPUs (Mali 400 of s2 s3).
RAM issue is interesting because we are employing the slowest memory DDR1, as well as 512 MB of physical memory (some devices have 640 physical but advertise them as 512 MB)
CPU is also very weak compared to other low end offerings, but it should not be the bottleneck of our device (it is probably RAM)

At least, it will run as good as the latest 4.2 builds for our device, so let's wait what our devs can do with KitKat to make it even more enjoyable :good:
Especially the RAM optimizations will be something our devices will benefit from. As being said before, that has been one of the weakest parts of the system in the past. Multitasking and such things should profit from that. Let's wait and see...
I have high hopes for Kit Kat. I am not sure if it'll actually run "our" poor device (i9000) run any better but i believe adding TRIM and better memory management can yield some positive effects.
Kit Kat was released for FUTURE low spec phones. When they said about Lower RAM, i immediately knew they were talking about those dual core processors and so on. I'd really love to have Hangouts as my primary sms app but the kind of resources it needs, our phone is just not enough to power it up.
Anyway, this seems like a fair challange for Android. If Kit Kat successfully powers our devices "Better" than previous android versions then i am SOLD for Google. :fingers-crossed:
Anxiously waiting for a Kit Kat ROM. Heck, imma upgrade it that very day, even if its an Alpha build lol.
I don't know what you're on about with regards to hangouts, it runs like a dream on my phone.
Are you running a bunch of background stuff? I intentionally ditched the Facebook app because it alone greens half the phone's resources, crazy.

I don't know if you were serious when you said "it runs like a dream". It runs just fine It STARTS like a *****. And you obviously can't run Hangouts running in the background because its just too resource hungry. In almost all cases, it takes like 6-7 and sometimes as long as 12 seconds to load hangouts app (too much ram clearing going on in background i think) and you try to go back, the Launcher will redraw because Hangouts had kill the other processes in the background to make room for itself.
Before you say anything. I am not new to this stuff. I am using CM 4.2.2 (some oct Nightly) w/ Devil Kernel and BigMem (420MB). I use Greenify so other apps like Facebook & Googleplus are always Hibernated in the background which means more RAM is always available to apps like Hangouts.
Its the CPU which is the main bottleneck. A single core just doesn't cut it these days. However, on a Dual Core phone with same amount of RAM ... THATs where hangouts runs like a dream.
Anyway, i am not complaining. I just hope things could get better than that, especially when we have TRIM support and ART in our disposal with Kit Kat. I have been using i9000 since THREE years (or more) now. Bought it back in 2010 i think when it launched, and i am not letting it go any time sooner. (Just love Voodoo Sound)

As far as the rest of the updated 4.4 apps, the run great, no lag on my 4.3.1 ROM... 4.1.2 is still the fastest/smoothest/ less resource heavy (modern-ish) ROM available... Yep, agreed on that. 4.1.2 is still the smoothest. However, Nexus S users are still better off because they have a faster NAND Flash as compared to us the i9000 users. So at the end of the day, our phones lag much more than the Nexus S.
Still, like you said. "new is good". I am hoping this "new" to be "perfect". Lets see what actually happens.

I'm sorry, you must be confusing me with someone who takes another person's anecdotal evidence over my own.
I don't use Greenify, I don't use Ram Manager, I have nothing of the sorts installed, I use Hangouts, and I use ADW Launcher, and I've spent the last 5 minutes switching between apps trying to reproduce your issues, and I am not able to.
Hangouts does load kind of slow (about 4 secs to load from nothing), I have thousands of SMS going through it so I am not surprised, Spotify is much worse with my offline playlists. I go into Hangouts (all the regular background services running, obviously); Home Key out to ADW, it's still there (I am not forcing it to memory), all 5 pages and widgets. I hop into Hangouts; it's still there with no lag; switch to camera, it's no issue, switch to XDA, bam, that is one hungy fella so it uses about 3 seconds to load my first screen.
I could go on forever. The fact is though: Your issues are not my issues. It's also worth noting I have the slow i9000, not the fast one, I am running 1GHz, regular animations, no RAM optimizations like zRAM or Samepage Merging. Regular ol' CM Kernel.
I've also been on this phone for "THREE years" as you so calmly put it. I also love our Wolfston DAC, I love that for some reason, my old CM9.1 w/Semaphore ran like ****, but my new CM10.1.3 runs like the wind, including all the apps.
I do not care that you have issues, it frankly seems like you've painted yourself into a corner with all your optimizations (I had them running on 9.1), maybe you're doing something wrong, despite your amazing three years of experience.
I run my phone like a champ, you do not, sorry 'bro.
EDIT: For those that do struggle with memory problems, look into "Long press back to kill" in dev options, back on CM9.1 I used it a lot because I knew my apps and phone better than the OS did. It's a god-send for people who want control.

So you are happy with your phone. Good for you.
You are being a little too unrealistic about the performances while you seem to disregard the problems/limitations that still exist as of this day, as well as the problems in the older ROMs.
The CM9.1 you are talking about was ICS which in itself was a worst nightmare for everyone. Its main problem regarding "Internal Storage Low" were enough to put some off. (However scripts to bypass that was available and i survived that perfectly fine, because of the "functionality" i was getting). It was Jelly Bean (CM10 and later) where things started to pick up the pace, and now 4.1.3 users seem happier because its slightly less hungry on RAM than 4.2 or later users (which is where "I" am).
That being said, i did mention about the Hangouts' Load Times. If i am at home then i can bear agonizingly slow load times of Hangouts but if i am outside or in an emergency, then its a genuine problem. (Stock CM SMS app takes like half a second to load up)
Lets talk about the point where your ROM starts to get slower after some time of usage, until you reflash it. TRIM support eliminates this issue which is in 4.3. That, combined with the fact that i9000 has a agonizingly slow NAND Flash used in it, greatly affects the performance ... which your post is implying that its "not happening with you". If its not, then Good for you. OR maybe you just arent' accepting it because you'll feel pwned ... MAYBE.
And i am not using any RAM Manager, never have in the first place. But Greenify is something essential, something which can actually replace the "AutoRun" program we used to use back in the days. If you don't know about it, or don't want to use it ... fine. But don't start pointing fingers are people or making it look like "We are Wrong" and "You are the Genius",
The only thing i mentioned about "Hangouts" was A FACT which you proved yourself, however apparently trying to hide or reduce its implications for some unknown reason. I didn't even mention any other problem where you are trying to be jumpy with your attitude.
Lets not turn the tables here and focus on the Kit Kat's discussion. I am looking forward to it. If you aren't, Good for you.
Okay, I've been running Goldeneye rom since I bought my S4.
I came from an iPhone 5.
I really like andriod but I just don't like the lag that it always has...
I don't know how to exactly explain it but here is a good example:
Opening the camera app on an iPhone there was little to no lag it would open up quick to where i can see what im taking a picture of and when i clicked the capture button it would take the pic no hesitant.
S4 is different... idk if its TW or the rom I am using but when I open the camera it takes at least 1-2 secs of delay. Then when taking the picture it has a slight delay again and usually never gets the best shot.
Also opening the Messaging app...
For example: when opening a text and going to click on reply to it the keyboard doesn't come up as fast as it does on the iphone. Im so use to opening and start typing and when I do that i usually miss the whole first word I was going to type.
I don't know if anyone understands what i'm talking about but yeah lol if anyone does understand what have you done to fix this?
TW based ROMs are going to be a bit more system heavy, and you may experience slower response times. If you're looking for speed and customization than I suggest you go with a AOSP/AOKP based ROM, or even a Google edition. I personally use task650 AOKP.
A quick tip for TW, go into your developer options. Phone - About phone - click build 7 times to activate it. Than set all your animation scales to 0 in your developer options. You'll notice 2x more speed on TW.
As for the best ROM.. There isn't. Its all user preference. There's a ton of great ones out.

How is the battery life on that?
Goldeneye gets me about a full day of usage.
Also, does it have apps2sd and pictures to sd?
It does. Tasks is a 4.3.1 ROM with apps2sd incorporated. Battery life on an aosp based ROM will generally be better than a TW at stock levels due to it being way less extensive. Though battery really depends on how you use your device.

If you want to use APT-X Bluetooth codec for hi-def bluetooth, then stay away from AOSP ROM's because they don't have it. Otherwise, my favorite AOSP ROM was Slim Bean.
For an experience that is "stock" framework but looks AOSP and doesn't have a TouchWiz UI, then I'd install KangaBean (Google Edition 4.3) and use xPosed mods to tweak the heck out of it. You can even use the xPosed mod to run CyanogenMOD themes. This is what I'm on now and I'm loving it.
As far as camera goes, I think they all have a small lag when opening camera. Which is annoying to me.
I've started to try and use AOKP by task650 but i cant get LTE on it...
It's a pretty good rom and what i was looking for but no connection = me sad

Personally I would take a look at the Flight5 ROM. I came from an iPhone 4s, and I can honestly say this is the best from I've tried so far.
It is the default ROM, but with nearly all the bloat removed, very fast, great battery life (I average 13 hours on, with 4+ hours screen time, but that does depend on usage), and hardly any lag, if any, when opening the camera.
I've only tested one ASOP GPE ROM, but I found Flight5 to run just as fast and smooth.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2418522
Another thing that has not been mentioned yet, is there is a general consensus that the camera on TW based ROMs is better than those on ASOP based ROMs. I agree with that, from my testing. It's not a huge difference, but it is there.
After installing any ROM, I would recommend taking a look at Xposed modules, particularly WanamXposed. This will allow you to make customizations normally associated with custom ROMs, without having to flash them permanently.

#1. There are so many roms here and it is worth trying many of them: AOKP can be a bit "bleeding edge" at times, so if you're not getting the results from task's rom for LTE, save time and effort and try another rom!
- Personally I have very good LTE and a very stable, no-lag experience on Shostock rom. It may not appear as flashy as some other roms, (but the bootup animation is ) However, the Shostock threads have been very helpful and there are many responsive/friendly posters (in general)-- it's a bit more relaxed there. Also, several of the add-on packages that iB4STiD provided for GoldenEye are actually built in to shoman94 's roms. So that saves steps.
--Sho has two i377 "Shostock" roms: one is based on the ATT stock rom and is now at android 4.2.2 (VERY stable & battery life nice: a perfect daily driver) here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2305752 .
-- Shoman's other i377 rom is based on the international version of the S4, (I9505). It runs perfectly on the i377 and is currently at android 4.3. [Android 4.3 is newer, with a couple of changes from 4.2, but I personally am less crazy about it than 4.2 -just my opinion] Anyway, here is the link to Shostock international rom for the i377 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468860
#2. Also, Br4nd3n's suggestion on turning off animation in developer settings is very good for any rom here. (In the TW rom menus there are three animation options.
=So go to: Settings/ More/ Developer options, and then look for the setting for "Windows animation", "Transition animation" and "Animator during scaling."Set ALL of these to OFF and the lag is generally gone.
I have had some apps that caused lag, so check that too!
#3. Also, FrozenDragoon's comment on the results for TW camera app being better is what I have seen as well. AOSP/KP and Google Edition roms are great in many ways, but their Camera app is not as good as the original Samsung one that TW roms have on them. If camera shots are important, then that's a consideration. If the camera is not as important as flexibility/customization, then GE or AO?P roms are the choice.
#4. CZ Eddie mentioned Xposed framework with (iB4StiD's other great rom) a Google Edition rom for the S4 called Kangabean http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2349077 . This GE rom is fast and simple, but open to customization with Xposed framework and (I think) Gravity-Box.
- Using those two programs you can tweak the rom in limitless ways. (But it is not a TouchWiz rom, and won't have the Samsung special features). So, if you want customization that's a good direction (albeit with quite a few steps to get there
Good Luck

You know, the OP never mentioned what Baseband he's on. That will affect suggestions for ROMs.
Are you on MDL, or MF3 with SafeStrap?

Wow! That's right. If he has MF3 with Safestrap, he can't use any Android 4.3 rom (yet), he will have to use Android 4.2 roms.
Of course the new GoldenEye is 4.3, but the old one was 4.2. . so it still is not clear
There are NO roms better than the other...period. all this does is start a war....
Check the roms out yourself....thay ARE ALL GOOD in their own way.
here you go, 80+ roms to check and make the decision yourself.

I know, it's a 2 year old phone with just 1GB RAM and TouchWiz on top of it.
I've spent the last 2 days trying a LOT of roms to try to make the phone feel faster, because I don't want to buy a new one. I really like this one. The camera is AMAZING, decent battery life, love blocking mode, etc. As a phone it works great: good speaker, strong vibration, great signal, etc.
But there's one single thing that makes this phone feel "old": the speed. Just the speed. If it were faster and more fluid then there would be absolutely no reason to upgrade to the new phones (except, well, maybe more RAM and battery).
Yesterday I tried like 15 AOSP roms: CM11, temasek, ultimaAOSP, NeatROMAOSP, Vanir, AOKP, SlimKat, etc.
Nothing. It's slightly faster, but the problem is the animations. They just look wrong all the time. There's frame drops everywhere. And bugs and crashes, so back to Samsung stock today. Tried another 10 samsung based roms. Nothing new. Speed is still the same and frame drops are still there...
I guess I'll have to end up buying a new phone, but definitely not a flagship. I'm looking at midrange phones that come with AOSP. Found one with 2GB RAM, 13Mpx camera, 2500 battery, 5 inch 720P IPS screen, microSD and dual SIM for 199$. Great price, and comes with 4.4 stock Android.
Tried the phone at the store the other day and it just made my SGS3 look like the midranger, and that with a MediaTek A7 1.3 quad core!
+++
Exactly. Well, animations are smooth on AOSP with right kernel, but still not as it should be. This phone sucks when it comes to UI performance.
Now I even got broken camera and media playback, too, after stressing it with every new test on my phone.
Well, probably this phone worked the best with 4.1.2. I think it's all about crappy processor, called exynos.
EDIT: Btw,you can try archidroid 1x with his boeffla presets, though. After all,it's not that bad.
I think you are just setting unrealistic expectations if none of those ROMS, without TouchWiz, were any good for you.
There is nothing crappy about the processor mate. your case is an isolated issue. If the archi ROM is not smooth for you then there is something wrong with your phone.
it's always wise to stick to ROMs and kernels which are built using proper sources.
Do not restore a massive amount of data soon after a flash. Let the ROM settle a bit. Trim your device memory once in a while.
Also a megawipe is recommended after so many flashes.

I put Cyanogenmod CM11 on mine after updating to stock 4.3. It felt like a completely different phone and brought back the speed. It absolutely flies and battery time is double what it was on stock 4.3.
I tested alot of Roms but regading speed and batterylife i use Temasek with Yank kernel. No OC and de S3 flys.
Oh god, it's like reading a thread I could have written myself. I feel you, mate. Got the same damn frustations sometimes.
It seems that whichever ROM "camp" you choose, you're gonna have drawbacks. Tried so many different variants of TW-roms and i just feel they are all too slow and with lags.
Many of the AOSP-roms are quite fast (using ArchiDroid atm which is incredibly fast!) but then you get the problem of crappy camera, no Allshare, tethering issues, many games that have sound-issues and all those random bugs we all know about but try to live with
Perhaps the new Kitkat port can solve these issues but it seems there is a lot of work to be done still. Still I'm glad there's a community like XDA with such awesome people (Like Kryten who posted earlier ) who put the time into developing these things.. Or we would be stuck with even slower ROM's from Samsung.
Is there any way to get rid of it, or at least reduce it?
Install smart droid, further debloat, run greenify and boeffla, custom launcher and its quick, no lag
Even the s5 can't run without lag using Touchwiz.

Yes there is, activate Developer Options by tapping on the Build Number in About Phone. In there are 3 settings for animations. The 1st thing I do on every rom is decrease them to 25%. On CM11 and temaseks builds you have a slider which allows you to fine tune the settings instead of the picker which you find on other roms.
My personal experience is that OmniRom is just snappier than any of the others, even when I have a whole bunch of apps open, incoming calls get displayed almost instantly, the dialer and contacts open almost instantly. In my case of course. Everyone has their favourite rom/kernel combination. I have also had great success using Yank555's kernel with the default settings (which include a slight overclock with no noticeable battery drain.
So my temporarily solution is to completely disable the animations in developer settings.
It's a good solution, for now.
My combo right now is stock Samsung 4.3 debloated (many useless apps freezed. Other apps freezed also using Titanium Backup) with Boeffla kernel.
It gets annoying when animations aren't smooth and consistent, but I guess it's expected when Touchwiz is on top and just 1GB RAM.
Taking about RAM, this phone has almost no multitasking also! It's impossible to keep one Chrome or Internet tab open in the background while you do something else. When you go back to the Internet app it has to reload again.
And no custom rom can fix this either. I spent one week with AOSP Vanir rom and didn't had multitasking there either.
What I'm trying to say is that this phone has turned old faster than it should have, precisely because of a bad 4.3 update by Samsung and also just 1GB RAM.
And talking about speed and lag again, trust me, I've tied all the good roms available. It won't matter if you install a custom kernel. If you overclock the phone then battery will last even less than before, and it doesn't make a huge difference in speed animation and fluidity.
I'm sure AOSP roms like CM11 and others do work faster and more fluid in newest phones like G2, SGS4, HTC One, etc. It's because they have a better processor and 2GB RAM.
In the end I think it's the hardware that's to blame for the lag (and bad 4.3 update by Samsung too).
The phone is great otherwise. I love almost everything about it, like I previously said. Most times I can't believe how good the camera is, the screen is enough for me (no need for 1080P), size and weight is perfect, etc.
I would have preferred to own the US SGS3 model with it's 2GB RAM than the EU model. In the long run I think it's better.
But anyway, the lag is not huge, just annoying. And I only notice it when opening and closing apps.
Try entering development settings and change the animator duration scale to 0.5 the transition animation scale to 0.5 and the window animation scale to 0.5
It will make anything faster

You don't understand it.
It doesn't matter the scale animation (just tried with 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 again), there's still frame drops everywhere.
It doesn't make anything "faster". It's even more annoying watching the frame drops at 0.25.
It's not a solution. There is NO solution to the animation frame drops, not even on custom roms...
Only "solution" is to turn animation scale completely to 0.
I have sgs3 intl and I had a lot of lags and frame drops and I switched to CM 11 nightly and it's became faster and no frame drop and it's like new.
What Android version do you use?

if you want to have the same camera quality, i suggest you archidroid 1.7.16.
faster rom i ever tried
What lag? My S3 is smmmmoooooooth on CM11

Alright,my last bet will be to go on Archidroid stock based ROM,use it's own boeffla preset setting and turn animations to 1.5x. Animations will be smooth all around, only custom launcher is needed, because when opening or closing apps on touchwiz,it's still stuttery. I'm still using touchwiz launcher, though (lovely animations all around!).
I noticed 1.0x is the worst speed for animations on stock ROMs. I mean, with 1.0x,I notice some fps drops much more when opening a new windows with animations. Like it's too fast for CPU to tune right time for speed and animation and that makes it laggy. So it's all about wrong timing,as 0.5x also feels much more smoother,it's noticeable.
But the 1.5x setting compensates that. No more stuttery animations at all and it feels pretty beautiful. This was my last solution for stock touchwiz ROM,and I'm pretty happy. Try it yourself.
EDIT: Btw,if you also want to keep touchwiz, try xposed app settings, find there touchwiz launcher and tick the checkbox for "resident" option. That way it will keep the launcher in memory hardly,so when you will go back to launcher , shadows under the icons won't redraw and thus stuttery animations will be reduced and will happen much more rare.
On multitasking, try maximising your swap. Never have problems going from Chrome, email, FB etc. Also try removing apps 'receiver' settings, so they don't open on unlock, wifi connect etc..

There have been a select FEW roms that solved most of the issues you talking about, but they mostly old and the developers have moved on. The truth is, AOSP kitkat isnt optimized for our phones and you most likely wont find a stock based ROM that doesn't lag. I think the main culprit is Jellybean + Samsung together. I don't ever recall ICS having frame drops or lagging really. Samsung did a crappy job optimizing jellybean for our phone. Jellybean is hardware intensive, more than ICS and Kitkat. Seems like it was a temp solution while Google worked on KitKat and now our phone is unfortunately stuck there.
Do yourself a favor and don't get a Samsung if you want proper performance.
Hardware is fantastic, its let down by software. I will be honest on 4.4.2 performance wasn't that special either. I came from a Moto G, a phone with 1GB ram and 1.2 Quadcore CPU and performance wise it beats the S5. I upgraded to lollipop and well things have just got worse. For instance pressing the gallery takes 3+ seconds to open, same with making a call, and quite often when I hit the home button it redraws which indicates RAM is getting used up and needs free'd.
If you came from something like an S3 I'm sure this phone would seem like lightening, but coming from a stock android experience it is slow.
The question is how do I fix this? I did factoy reset after lollipop update which helps a bit but it soon bogs down again, an issue with 5.0 apparently. I have tried Nova which helps a bit but underneath its still running TW which I thinks the problem.
1)Use xtrestolite rom (free bloatware, u install only what u want..)
This is the most important thing I can suggest to you .. And flash rom fresh (I mean.. Wipe clean.. Etc)
2)if u want u can restart your phone once a day... IT will run a lot better after restart...
3)use performance governor cpu

This video has just demonstrated what I thought.
I mean how does this happen?
As mentioned above, nstall xtrestolite 4.4.2 if you want lag free, bloat free, optimized TW experience. You will get better battery, 0 lag and slowdown. It's simply butter smooth.
Don't go to TW lolipop because it's just not ready yet.
If you want to go an extra mile try CM12 based L roms like Temasek's or BlissPop variant. Pair it with ktoonsez kernel and you will practicaly have a new device.
