Has anyone formatted a micro sd card as internal storage? If so how do you like it?
Clearly devices with usb C ports and usb 3.1 should be much better performing, but I was wondering what issues if any people are seeing with the current hardware on the Moto X Pure with micro usb and usb 2.0.
The only Android device I've formatted external storage as internal storage on so far is the Nexus player. On the Nexus player I'm using a 64GB usb 3.0 flash drive through a usb 2.0 hub through the micro usb port on the back of the device, so the speeds are limited, but it seems to perform pretty good I think most glitches/issues I have with the Nexus player are unrelated to the file/storage transfer speeds.
I believe the micro sd slot is still connected though usb 2.0 on the Moto X Pure so I imagine it should have similar performance to what I see with the Nexus player with slightly less latency not having to go through an additional usb hub.
If your on marshmallow you get prompted as to what to do with your external SD card. Either keep it as portable storage or format it as internal

Hey,
Does anyone here have the USB adapter for their Samsung Tab 10.1? Can you connect a USB hub to it (maybe a powered USB hub)?
I take lots of full resolution photos, and would like to use the Tab to transfer data from SD card to portable USB hard drive.
What I want to avoid is having to first copy the SD card contents to the Tablet, then connect the tablet to the portable HD to unload the photos. That seems like unnecessary wear/tear on the flash memory.
If the USB host on the Tab 10.1 can handle a hub, then I can connect both the SD card and portable HD at the same time...hopefully the Tab would make use of it's RAM (the 1GB spec) to transfer chunks of data at a time, without resorting to using the internal Flash memory.
Am I right about that? The Android OS doesn't use the flash memory as a page file for working memory the way desktop computers do with drives?
bump - hoping someone can answer. Thanks.
There is a thread in development about a homemade usb adapter, and it works successfully with a hub. The samsung adapter isn't available yet, but should work the same

pokey9000 figured out how to force the unit in host mode. All you need to do is put 20ohms of resistance (easiest way with two 10Ohm resisters in series) between pins 13 and 15.
He also tested using a powered hub and was able to connect to multiple items at once. A regular hub might work for a few thing that are low powered but if you plan to have two hard drives, it better be powered.
has anyone found a usb to sd card adapter for multiple sd cards?
Did you ever figure this out? I want to do the same thing.
Hopefully this isn't a repost, but I was trying out USB OTG and realized that it could be used to transfer files from my GS3 to and from my other phones. I used a non-powered USB hub. It shows as 3 USB drives because one of my phones only has internal memory (no sd card installed). the other phone sees internal memory and SD card. As a bonus, the gs3 can be used to charge other phones.
I am wondering whether anyone has connected a USB 3.0 hub to the Axon 7.
The reason I ask is that I am going on a trip soon and want to back up my camera SD card each day to a USB stick. I don't want to take a laptop. What I'd like to do is connect a USB card reader / hub to the phone to copy files from the SD card to the USB stick at USB 3 speeds. Devices like the Ravpower wd03 only do usb 2, which will take ages per file.
Will this work? Will I need a USB 3 otg?

Update - USB Hub Works - but.....
OK, so I took the plunge and bought an Aukey USB C to USB 3 adaptor and a USB hub - one of these. I did it that was as I don't have other USB C devices.
The USB hub works fine with USB memory sticks. Each time i insert it registers a new USB OTG drive and I can happily copy to and from it (and more than one
But every time I insert an SD card into the SD reader, the Axon 7 gives me an error "Unsupported USB Drive: This device doesn't support thus USB drive. Touch to set up in a supported format". When I try to format the card, it fails.
Any ideas?
Update 2
I should add that:
1. The same problem occurs even if I use the MicroSD card I use in the phone - so it is not a formatting issue.
2. I also have a Note 5. If I connect the USB hub to that via a USB OTG, the Note 5 can happily read the SD Card.
3. The SD slot USB Hub works fine when when plugged into a PC.
Do I need an additional USB OTG? Will that conflict with the phone?
Update 3!!!
This is getting ridiculous but I want it to work.
So I tried plugging a SD Card reader into the USB hub. Lo and behold it works!!!! I wonder whether the issue is just that the SD card reader in the hub is missing something which allows the Axon to read the SD card.
That was only USB 2 - I am going to invest in a USB 3 SD card reader (my camera produces large files!) So I am going to invest in a small USB card reader and will report back.
Update 4
So the card reader has arrived as has my USB 3 stick. Now I can copy all the files from the SD Card to the USB Stick.
The only issue is that Dropbox scans the cards and starts trying to upload them as Camera uploads so I've had to kill the process.
The other issue is that my file manager (File Manager HD) doesn;t allow copying and I have to use the System file Manager, which is awful. Am going to work on that process over the weekend. Any suggestions gratefully received on that front!!!
Rubbish. Rubbish. Rubbish
The connection just isn't stable enough. The phone keeps saying that the card(s) keeping g being disconnected / removed. There is nothing wrong with the hub or either the USB stick or the sync card / card reader.
Last chance - I will add a power supply to the USB hub. If that doesn't work I'm afraid my views will be confirmed - this is a great phone with a great DAC but other than that it is just a bit rubbish and cheap for a reason, with a manufacturer which doesn't want to develop for it. I'm the EU least.

So this wasn't always a problem, and I can't say when it happened, but it has begun to annoy me more recently.
OTG storage used to work. Something like six months ago my Galaxy S7 Edge (Android 8.0.0, Verizon, Developer Options Enabled) stopped recognizing when I plugged OTG storage devices into the phone.
The two USB thumb drives I primarily use are:
SanDisk, 128 GB Ultra Dual USB Drive (USB 3.0 / Micro USB), formatted ExFat32
--> This is not detected when directly plugged into the micro USB on the phone, nor when connected by USB OTG cable
SanDisk, 32GB Ultra Dual USB-C Drive (USB 3.1 / USB-C), formatted Fat32
--> This I can only connect with an OTG cable, not detected
Both of the drives work on Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 and Tab S4 (I got the Tab S4 for Christmas).
The only way I can easily get files onto the S7 Edge is by connecting it by USB to a laptop.
I don't see any settings that would turn on or off OTG Storage in the settings. I don't want to reformat the drives, I've tried that many times.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be keeping them from being detected? I have the pro versions of ES File Explorer and Solid Explorer both on the phone.
Thanks,
Joe
Hey Joe, I realize this is almost a year old but did you ever find a solution? I've just formatted my DUAL USB (128GB) to exFAT and it is no longer recognized by my Galaxy S7 Edge. Any hints greatly appreciated. Cheers, Scott
I have not been able to get the S7 Edge to recognize external storage / USB togo memory. I gave up trying; transfer files directly from pc to the phone now. I assumed it was a software update that killed usb memory access, but never was able to confirm.
Sorry,
Joe
Hi,
Can someone explain to me why many Android head units will have a 64GB limit on a USB stick but far higher on HDD. Below is from a Joying unit specs.
USB/SD slot maximum compatibilitySupports USB flash drive and Micro SD card with up to 64GB of storageHDDSupport external hard drive with up to 500GB storage
I don't think those are generally accurate. I'm using a 128GB USB flash drive with no problems. I've read some use an external 1TB SSD.
I think biggest issues are format (FAT32/NTFS/etc) and power requirements of what you plug into the USB connectors. For drives with a higher power requirement, you'll need to power the drive some other way. There may be other considerations.
I can't say what will and won't work, though. If the vendor gives you those specs, you can't complain to them that a larger drive than specified doesn't work. You'll just have to try what you have to see if it works.
