Well ok then, I was ecstatic that's it

I would like to say I wouldn't recommend updating to fire OS 5 when it's released because who knows if we can downgrade back to fire OS 3.2.8 if we don't like fire OS 5 or we want to get CyanogenMod 11 in the case that there isn't a safe strap for a lollipop which means no CM 12 Roms.
TL;DR: Wait to see if we can get Safestrap and root if yu don't like Fire OS 5 or need/want root

Been confirmed FireOS v5 is only coming to 4th gen HDX devices ... at least for now. Looks like KitKat may be the end of the road for (locked) 3rd gen devices. Not horrible but a definite disappointment as the vast majority of HDX devices are 3rd gen (including all 7" models).

Yep, I'm stuck on CyanogenMod 11 unless Amazon releases a future [minor] update that has any "crack(s) in the wall" .[emoji6]

Once the HDX gets the update, will they likely be able to be rooted then?

Wait...I thought we were getting Fire OS 5 for the HDX 4th generation. It just updated to 4.5.5.1. Where is Fire OS 5?

Seems 4.5.5.1 is going out to all HDXs. Amazon has stated 4th gen devices will be updated to FireOS v5 but hasn't set a specific date (recent notification to 4th owners suggested within a few weeks). 3rd gen devices will not get the v5 update.
Anticipating your next question: changes in 4.5.5.1 are unknown at present.

Did anybody notice the thread on Amazon mentioning that the 5.4.1 Fire OS image was inadvertently released for a short time?
Seems like there might be Fire OS 5 in the wild. Is this believable? Does anyone have the file?

Noob question: what does it mean to masquerade as s Galaxy Nexus? My Amazon Video Prime account says that my Kindle is not configured to play videos.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
it means your Kindle appears to the market as a Galaxy Tab, meaning that you have the app availability as for the Tab
If already have this rom, then you are rooted which cancels your ability to watch Amazon Prime
You can temp unroot and Amazon Video will work.

The masquerade is a good thing. It lets you see apps on the market that would normally not be viewable, but still work fine on the Kindle Fire.
The issue you are having has really nothing to do with that, and all to do with the fact that you are rooted.
When the Amazon Video app runs (and it basically runs all the time), it looks to see if su is on the device and if it finds it, it will say you can't watch the videos.
You can fix this by using OTA RootKeeper (which you can now see in the Market) and using it to temporarily "un-root". Basically, it moves the su binary to a place that the Amazon Video app doesn't see.
o Get the OTA RootKeeper App https://market.android.com/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper and install it.
o Using it, click on the button that says unroot
o Now go to Settings -> Applications -> Running applications and find Amazon Video.
o Click on Force Close
Now you can use the Amazon Video app to watch your videos. After you start Amazon Video and run a video, you can go back and re-Root using OTA Rootkeeper and as long as you don't reboot your device, the Amazon Video will continue work fine as it only looks when it starts.
How should the options be set in OTA root keeper? I have it installed, but not sure which boxes should be checked.
Just press the unroot button... nothing else.
i ve done due with guide in #4 but when i trying buy free movie to check how is working this trick , message are displayed there was an error and your order may not have been processed ... should i try with chcanged proxy settings to us one?
running on 6.2.1 stock rooted
The steps in post #4 kind of assume that you had the ability to play and purchase Amazon Videos before you rooted. It is dealing with the Amazon Video app not allowing you to play content you already have available to you via your Amazon account.
You are talking about getting content for your Amazon Account.
Not being outside of the US, I'm not in that position, but I've read that in order to purchase content outside of the US you need to use a US credit card on your one click purchase options for your Amazon Account.
I'm sure that others outside the US that have done this can chime in.
It definitely rejects a non US credit card but I am not sure if there is a way around this. Not trying to steal anything, just want to buy it. Too bad they don't accept Paypal.

Sorry. Does OTA Rootkeeper only work with Modaco? I thought it was a pretty general app.
Thanks everyone
I downloaded OTA Rootkeeper, set it up, unrooted and the Amazon Prime Videos started flowing!
OTA Rootkeeper is just what I needed.
OTA Rootkeeper is ROM independent
I just happen to be using MaDaCo GR6 for my Kindle Fire. It's been a breeze getting my Kindle rooted and taking advantage of the Android Universe.

No, it works with a lot of roms and devices. However, whether it will work to allow you to use Amazon Video when using the MIUI rom, you would need to check with a MIUI thread which is why I said that. They would be able to give you a more accurate idea if you can do that with that rom. I've never tried MIUI.
I know that on some roms, Amazon Videos won't work regardless of what you do to view paid and account accessible videos.
As for OTA Rootkeeper, Even on the Kindle Fire, it doesn't work the same as it does on other devices where in some cases, it can actually prevent an OTA update from removing root (hence the name). That part of it doesn't work on the Kindle Fire since the OTA updates wipe the /system directory completely when they update.
With the stock roms and roms which uses stock like setups, OTA Rootkeeper works good for hiding being rooted by the Amazon Video app.
good explanation. Thanks.
how does the masquerade work. I registered my kindle to the app market after installing gr6 but it still shows up as a kindle... where do i go to change that?

but i already found my answer. i did a market search for tesla led (device specific led program apparently) it showed up with the gr6 rom but not with cm7/9 and stock roms.
but honestly I prefer GR6 to cm7/9. I like cm9 better than cm7 due to the fact cm9 is closer to vanilla than cm7 but it would be better if it had galaxy tab mask on the android market

This forum is specifically for the 2014 version (so 2nd gen) of the Moto G.
Unfortunately, it seems that the picture in the first post is a bit confusing, since it's indeed a pic of the 1st gen ...
Might be a good idea to change that.
I have taken a look around the web, but can't directly find a comparable banner for the 2nd gen that doesn't also include a "buy now" link or a watermark .. this is the best I've been able to find:
Hello Everyone
I Don't want to bother anyone here...But I purchased My New Moto G 2014 edition A Month Ago...
I am Not a developer or anything...just a noob in operating android..Don't know how to root or anything...just impressed by these things that by rooting your phone can be done.
So can i question here about my queries :
1. Is it safe to Root My phone? As i read somewhere that i shouldn't root my phone it will cause my warranty of the phone to end.
2. if it is safe, can I have a proper guide to root my phone from a noob's point of view. With pictures and a bit of text will be very good.
3. A bit more guide on how to have lollipop on my phone after rooting my phone.
4. I also wanted to know about CyanogenMod what is this.
I had operated an iphone 3gs Unlocked with cydia in it.

Dont root your phone till you get an official lollipop update because then you will need to unroot it back to install lollipop. It will be rolled out very soon.

Yes, it may. Any such changes made can affect OTA. Keep it real and original till you get lollipop update. Expect it on any December date.
Reserved!
Is the logo.bin in system? So flashing just the system will put everything back ready for OTA?
Also, I've tried flashing recovery but never got it to work. Will I need to flash stock recovery as well, or does it revert back to stock after a reboot?
I'd like to suggest using a more specific title than Moto G (2014) if you mean 2nd gen. 2014 can be interpretted as developments in 2014. I bought my phone in Aug 2014, but I'm told it's 1st gen. Now I will try and find the forum for my phone (it's not this one).

no logo.bin is not in system and should not stop OTA even if you modify it to fix the bootloader message
as far as im aware all you need to get matching boot.img , /system folder and recovery.img , but these need to be correct version for the OTA update you received (either in zip or OTA)
for example the currently 'leaked' OTA for 5.0.2 xt1068 from india will only update if is finds dsds retall ALL version .23
it will not install over .14 or .27 versions.
i think its time for the OP to update this. so many freshy news and this is what? abandoned?

FireTV Stick (FTVS) Root & Firmware Updates

I'm seeing multiple references to rooted sticks, but no guides.
I'm guessing those that have done it are coming from the FireTV original.
Who has successfully rooted the FireTV Stick?
What Firmware was device successfully rooted with?
Can Android OS be changed to a different ROM?
I have 2 that I got on the $19 promotion and don't want to plug them in if there is a chance I can root first.

Nobody. The firetv stick cannot be rooted currently on any firmware. Standard fire tv's could be rooted as of 1 or two firmware revisions ago.
Edit - looks like there might be a potential hardware root referenced here:

They had something similar posted for the original fire tv but noone has been able to reproduce it to my knowledge.

Say again? Which guide?
Although ADB is often used for rooting other devices it does not mean there is root on the stick. The KODI installation guides refer to "ADB sideloading" and this has nothing to do with root. I assume this is a missunderstanding by Desertio.

Two importand facts, I dont know before:
You dont have to connect the stick with usb-power to get access to the nand!
The ground (gnd) solder point should go from the marked-gnd-point to the hdmi/usb shield to the gnd-point on your board. 1 hole wire is good.

What I would like to find out with your help, before I root the next device or somebody, would be to find out what is the newest hardware-rootable stock firmware from amazon, where I should update, before making a hardware-root.
Because at the moment there is no pre-Rooted rom's like, like builded from rbox or realbbb for the Fire-TV-Box-1. Also there is no unlocked-bootloader or custom recovery.
I like the hardware from the stick for that prices! And the software is getting better and better.
Sadly I had some problems with rbox x-posed modules, see here. (Got muted kodi, when enabled)
So theese are my informations about rooing an fire tv stick.

This likely also means that it'll work on the Fire HD 6 and 7.

Just for tips, a chinese APP now can root your Fire HDX8.9 (4th gen)!
although i dont like chinese apps as they always do something evil, it can root the 4th gen devices!
The name is Kingroot.
Firephone and 4th gen HDX has been tested working!
and some tips for you guys, it wont install supersu as default, but kinguser instead. you may change it with supersu.

Generic nature of this pup suggest it should also work with 4.5.4 unless Amazon has taken explicit steps to block. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. There is not a lot of western buzz around Kingroot and other mainstream boards haven't pumped it (yet). Certainly one to watch.

So I suggest using it only for root. then remove KingUser and install SuperSU.
Some guys will test it tonight. and you can wait for good news.

Got my Fire 4.5.3 King Rooted, now what?
Can I adb install a gapps package? Which one? What about a custom recovery? A Rom?
I would not recommend adb install. The steps once rooted would be the same as with 3rd gen devices. Adb install is more risky.

Congrats! No custom recovery on 4.x as bootloader remains locked. Keep in mind stock recovery is next to useless...careful what you do with root.
So far I have root access, but I could not install supersu and could not install gapps following this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/general/tut-disable-ota-4-5-2-install-gapps-t3043550
Copied all the files in system etc.
Looks like something is different on the fireos packaged with the 4th gen HDX, I guess that why previous gen freezes their ota or downgrade; they don't want to break it
Idea ideas ?

Why are you not able to install supersu? Errors, messages? Also, how are you confirming root access (other than kingroot saying so)?
Will this work on fOS 4.5.3 on Saturn?? I'm asking because I can't do chinese xD and I do not want to install more bloatware

Wouldn't hurt to try.
If anything, you can just install it.
It rebooted the device at ~20% then my gut took a downward turn... Uninstalled the app.. My experience is that whenever my gut warns me, go with it. Rarely wrong...

I recommend you the tutorial of firephone to get supersu installed.
Can someone confirm if it is supposed to reboot?

You can check troubleshooting section part 4 from tutorial posted in post #17 and see if it fits your device, where OP stated something about unexpected rebooting while rooting device with simcard from specific operator with kingsroot...
Damn, looks like it won't work on Saturn... Still get a reboot after a reset

Most of the directions (rooting, restoring...) will be the same

there are no custom roms
rooting is unclear, it might be possible with Kingroot , if KingRoot works it may take several attempts

Thanks, why is the situation so unclear, is the device to new? When would you expect that more details become clear on how to root the latest Fire HD from 2016?

Hasn't been many reports about rooting the 2016 model yet.
I've seen most people replying that it can't be rooted, but a couple that they could root
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Labs
If Kingroot does work it could take up to 6 attempts before successful
and Kingroot is updated fairly often, once a month or so

Is there any danger using Kingroot, i.e. bricking the device?

Very little risk of bricking with kingroot

Thank you very much, just one more question: Without root, is it able to install the Google play store, and which APKs do I need in which order?

root isn't necessary for google framework and play store
the Supertool can be used or manually with adb or just a file manager
only four apps are needed

I received my Fire HD 8 a few weeks ago, installed Google Play Store and Google Play Services from day 1, and it's been running smoothly since then.
Yesterday, I installed a system monitoring app and found out I constantly have system_server process running, with 30% CPU usage on average.
Does anybody have an idea of what this system_server process is, and why it uses so much CPU?

Hey everyone this is my first time posting and this is my first Android device, well second if you count the short time I had a Note7 lol.
I have the Google play store installed and working but I am trying to connect my playstation 4 controller but its not working. It connects and is shown under bluetooth devices but no functionality. Just trying to play PS4 remote play on it. The remote play works with the on screen controlls but they are terrible. Any help would be great as I am trying to pull away from the Apple products. Thank you everyone!
I ran the install-play-store bat, and the play store seemed to install ok on my hd8/6th gen. However, the removal of lock screen ads didn't work.... or at least not yet. Upon reboot, it initially showed a Google background/wallpaper (pic of some mountain or something) but then the amazon ad quickly appeared over it. Maybe this will kick in after some time and a few reboots...?

I have the same problem. Installed google apps successfully. But could not get rid of the lock screen ads.
I wonder can I get google now luncher without rooting(Since at the moment we can not root). Of course, the best option is cyanogen mod but I think we gotta wait for it.

removal of lock screen Ads requires root
stock launcher should be replaceable see

Awesome! Thank you again!
Just brought this device today, set it up and everything was working fine. Now that I installed this update, it only boots into recovery. I'm not an android noob, but I don't want to mess up this device just in case I take it back tomorrow. Any help will be gratefully appreciated.
