there is def more noise after unlocking.. but not that much of a deal breaker in your examples.. it would be good if you had the chance to go for a more low light situation because it would probably be more apparent there.
but tbh, i cant decide yet which of those pics i like more. There is something more natural/defined about the "unlocked" pics compared to the smoothed out "locked" ones.

It looks like the lost "drm-keys" for the cam is only for the software and makes only the pictures in digital use better and i think with GIMP i have better results if i want better pictures.
soooo i think its not realy worth it if you keep them/ custom rom calls for me

Nice thanks! I must say the difference in manual is minimal but with locked BL you have noise free image and slightly better colors and exposure. One thing to note is that in superior auto the after unlocked bootloader photos have lower ISO making for a bit bigger difference (First set 1250 vs 1600, second 640 vs 800 ISO, unlocked/locked).

Really? How do you rate the HD2 Quality overall from 1-5?
I love it, just the screen quality, size and contrast make my friends lust over the phone especially when I'm in picture mode.
I love the screen but the actual camera doesnt seem to do it justice, the old photos on my sd card, taken on my N95 on the other hand look fantastic on the HD2 screen
I also love the camera on this
After having BB's for so long I am quite happy to have a decent camera to take those on the fly pics...look at the quality you can actually see the bee in the middle of the pic!

I was waiting a long time to tee off, so I snapped a few shots on the 6th tee and stitched a little panorama here.

Haha.. join the conversation. Fantasytozi, you should try the change to the camera that I posted earlier in this thread. It will make your second picture look like your first and last. You take really good photography!
Various customed ROMS; tweaked camera registries

Already applied modded camera tweaks.

No change, Im a dumbass, I already had this enabled. I stand by my original statement.
Love have a camera that is useable in your pocket.
These are my thoughts about the camera.
As longs as there is a lot of light they are pretty good, but when you are forced to use the led flash or dont use it in low light I say the pictures arnt any good.
My old camera a sony ericsson k810i had a xenon flash. It could take awsome pictures in the dark.
What are your thoughts on low light fotography with the HD2? I would really like to tweak it so it improves.

Are they tips #16 and #56? I just checked and they already there in my current rom, Laurentius26. Maybe I will try to take some photos again

If I would rate I would say 3-3.5 it is a good cam for just shooting some nice pictures outdoor. Video quality is pretty good in my opinion to. Shooting in the dark if you keep it in your hands without moving you get good pictures (for example in a bar). But it quite difficult to keep it steady espescially when you have drinken some alcohol . But at daylight you can take good macro for example documents.
Overall I would say a good outdoor shooter. But that is not very special for the camera's at the moment.
Is the camera used on the droid 2 the same as the original droid? droid's camera has got to be one the WORST cameras ive tried awful quality and slow
I never owned an original droid but I have been surprised at how good the images on my D2 look. They're still not at the level of a dedicated camera, of course, but they are miles above what I had before--a Samsung Omnia. Holy crap, now THAT was a terrible camera... I cringe just thinking about it.

can u guys post some samples? btw heres what engadget had to say about droidd's 2 camera: "Motorola seems to have glossed over the camera without much thought... it's still 5 megapixels with a max video capture resolution of 720 x 480 (in other words, 480p). The original Droid has a famously bad shooter, and we regret to say the Droid 2 doesn't seem to be much better -- autofocus is still noisy and slow, macro mode doesn't really work, and images are often hazy and heavily artifacted. "

I totally disagree. I think the Omnia camera is much better than the D2. In order for me to get decent pics on the D2 I have to take the pics in really good lighting. I have taken pics in almost total darkness with the Omnia and they still looked good.
The first pic was taken with the Omnia, the 2nd with the Droid 2, the 3rd with the Droid 2 plus the Vignette software set to velvia, which made the pic a lot better.
The first 2 were taken one after the other in the same room with the same light, no flash on either. Though I think I had changed the settings on the D2 camera trying to get a better picture. I may have changed the ISO .

I like the D2 camera...
Even after reading the negative camera reviews, I really like it. I take pictures of my newborn daughter all the time. I use it in standard mode, b/w, and with the flash in low light. I have never had the washed out results that you see in the above attachment. I have attached a pic using the panorama function in my neighborhood. Really surprised at how easy it is to use. I agree that it should have been update in the D2 since the D1, especially with 720p recording, but I will keep it.

Not dimensional shrink, file size shrink - he said they resize them to 90k.
I've found that in my testing, if you take a picture at 5mp and then resize to about 1024x768, the pictures look pretty good (unless it's in low light).
It's when you blow up the 5mp picture to 100% that you see the grain and noise.
I didn't like it at first but it's growing on me
It 's impossible. That Droid2's pic is awful. I can't believe it
Hi.
I just received my Arc and I'm shocked by something : the camera does bad pictures, cause the codec is lame. A 8Mp photo take less than 1Mo.
Can someone fix that in a rom or a kernel or is this to hard to do ?
Thanks.
the photos from almost every other Arc are incredible.. I suspect you have a problem... maybe you're settings are wrong .. or there's a fault.
Look here for examples of how good it is.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035589
Look at one of mine (all are the sames).

By the way I'm using an LT15i (3.0.2.A.181) not rooted nor unlocked.
I've just rooted by arc. Is there a way to fix the jpeg compression ratio? It's way too high by default and images are losing details as a result.
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
you can try vignette that barely compresses at all - but everyone is pretty much saying that the photo's from stock cam are still better!

Thanks mate. Yeah I noticed almost everyone's saying that...but if one was to put the facts together, picture size alone for a 8MP resolution image can't be less than 1MB...
Will try Vignette and see if it's better. I just hope there's some kind of tweak (like in the HTC HD2) where you could set the compression ratio to further improve the quality.
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
You should try checking your camera setting OP.
Vignette is good, except it takes longer to preview the image in real size, and the unnecessarily 5~6x larger files with slightly worse quality than stock camera app.

What's settings are you talking about ?
What's the difference between the one's who have a good quality photos and the others ? The firmware ? They have a LT15a instead of a LT15i ?
Please help me to understand.
Did you use auto scene recognition? The picture has some heavy noise in it, so I suspect you play with exposure value or select night scene mode.
2nd picture is blurry; Did you hold your arc firmly when taking the picture ?
Yes I'm using the auto scene detection. Should I disable it ?
For the fisrt picture, the flash was activated.
And yes, I was holding it firmly.
I use auto scene detection for most of my photos and they seem much better quality than yours there. Try some outdoor shots and post them, indoor ones can have a lot of noise if the light is low anyway.
I once had similar problems with a nokia n95. Everyone was posting great shots and mine were horrible. Turns out the handset was faulty.
We all know the the N4 camera is not the best, so i was just wondering if y'all have made any modifications to make the camera better? If you have can you please share. Thanks.
There are a few popular paid cameras that are supposed to be quite good. I've always been content with CM's camera (not Focal). Seems to take pictures MUCH quicker
its a camera phone, of course its not the best camera. but if you know how to use a camera, the nexus 4 does really well, using the stock camera app. check out the post your photos thread in the general section. but if you have only the basic knowledge of how to get around a camera, then i can see someone calling it inadequate. the n4 cam just needs a little more knowledge to adjust it how you need it for that certain photo, using all the settings.

Honestly I tried focal today and I was not impressed by it in its early stages. The focus is very hard to adjust and takes forever to focus correctly... The exposure bubble also has to move around to achieve maximum results. Overall it might be a good camera with a lot of options, but you have to be very professional in order to use all of them and know exactly which ones to use at certain times. The stock camera was made for an average consumer but focal was made for a photographer. Here I will show you some tests I did with stock vs focal...
First is stock then Focal.
In the first two pictures the Focal picture has a much lower resolution than stock (I didn't notice that until now) they were both taken in automatic mode with no adjustments. You can tell how much more saturation Focal has but it just can't seem to focus as good as stock.
The second two pictures were taken with flash and in night mode at the same resolution. Once again you can see how much more saturated the colors are on Focal. While stock is a much more sharper image without any blur

Yeah, i've tried a few 3rd party camera apps too. Most either tend to result in very unnatural looking pics or they are pretty much stock with a different UI :I
I've never had overall success with any camera app besides stock. It does everything pretty good.

Hi everyone,
As i have rooted my Z2, i was able to install Xposed Framework. In Xposed Modes i found a mode which 'force' camera to use full 20 mp (or 15 mp in wide shot) in Superior Auto Mode. I have taken some pics to compare quality but couldn't understand anything. As i know, many of you guys are very interested in photography and know a lot about it, i decided to share some pics with you and let you decide which is better. Here's the link of 4 pics, 2 of them in 8 mp and 2 with 15 mp. (The names of the files indicate 'MP'): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/vvpghc7w187b1ia/_uUAk9NFry
Can provide more shots if needed.

Great effort. Somehow I noticed the 15 mp has a wider angle. Generally they look very close and still very good quality for both, maybe different lighting conditions and in daylight too maybe easier to distinguish which is best.
There is a great discussion on quality 8MP and 20MP. Many say 8Mp is better than 20MP, which contain more vivid colors. This video explains a little about!

The reason I felt brash enough to say something is because half of all my posts since I've been here have been on that exact topic in other threads that explain in detail what is lost and what isn't. You motivated me to finally put up an avatar.
From my tests and I've done a lot of them since I got the phone last month.
8mp in manual mode with my own settings produced the best results in all lighting conditions. Focusing for me is the z2's greatest problem and one which gets worse the more you increase the resolution.
From the watch photo the OP posted, you can clearly see that the 8mp sample is better focused. At 8mp, everything is better, detail preservation, focus, contrast and dynamic range. Yes you can't zoom in as far as you can with the 15 and 20.7mp snaps but the quality is noticeably better.
Sent from my D6503 using XDA Free mobile app
Thanks, very interesting!
Quality is comparable, actually at certain shots SA at 8MP is maybe a more consistently detailed, 15MP is sometimes a little noisier and I don't see much quality edge.
Where this can be very useful however is shooting large resolution full 4:3 frame SA images, as on stock we're limited to 8MP @16:9. It makes sense to give the full 4:3 option, and I'd love to see some 8MP vs. 20MP SA comparisons, if you have the time. :good:
