Artifacts on display - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
My screen gives sometimes these things.
This factory marriage?

Can you try to make a screenshot with the phone itself and display it on another device (e.g. your computer) to see whether it is the fault of your screen or something else?
Errors invisible on another device: fault of the screen
Errors still visible on another device: caused by something else

Recorded video.

These sort of artifacts can be the results of faulty RAM. Did you perform a full wipe and flashed a 6.0.1 Factory Image too, just to make sure that the ROM used is not the problem ? This sort of issue can also be kernel related.

i am update phone to 6.0.1 Then factory reset.
How can I check RAM?

If you set up a clean system ( 6.0.1 without custom kernel etc ), simply install a heavy graphics benchmark like eg. 3dmark and perform a couple of tests. If the tests are ok without any artifacts shown, your hardware might not be faulty. If however you still see these artifacts, you might need to RMA your device.

Antutu - fine
Vellamo - fine
Quadrant - fine
GFXBench OpenGL - only 1 test doesnt start - Car Chase (ES 3.1) - Out_of_memory
3D Mark (Sling Shot test) - test doesnt start.
I have clean system.

If you restart the system and start 3D Mark, can you perform these tests ? This is a bad sign since everything works on my device.

After reboot device, test loading and work 2-3 seconds then crash.

It seems that your device is faulty and needs to be changed

Phone freezing in deep sleep; should I request an RMA?

I've been having a recurring problem where my phone will lock up in a deep sleep, leaving the phone completely off. In order to restart the phone, I have to hold Power and Vol Down which takes me to a charging logo, and then hit power again. This generally happens overnight when the phone is charging, but I've also had it happen once while making a VoIP call. I thought I resolved the issue by wiping the phone and flashing the stock 4.2 ROM. However, the issue just occurred last night after 4 days of bug-free usage.
My question is whether this is some sort of weird software bug or a hardware issue. I haven't seen others report identical behavior but I've seen lots of complaints about freezing and random reboots that seem to be due to software. Should I request an RMA?
+ 1 . I am having the same issue. I would say hang tight. Call the support team and let them know you are having issues. If atfer a few weeks the problem persists perhaps go through an rma. I suspect it is software related. Lets say you did RMA still had the issue then had a dead pixel or other problem? It would suck and you would have to go through the whole process again. rinse and repeat. Only if you want to return the device for a full refund, then I would say hurry up and make that call. My .02 Good luck.

Having the same issue. Although no clear pattern is visible. Sometimes I find the phone dead-locked after putting it aside for 10 minutes and sometimes it seems to run for a day or even two without issue. Running _motley kernel right now without any change on this front.
I rather think it's a software issue than hardware. So I am not going to RMA it.
Strangely when I power off the phone on such a lock-up and then reboot it I will see a substantial drop in battery after the reboot. So the phone seems to be in some state where it still drawns more battery than in normal operation. E.g. with _motley kernel and limited clocks I typically see 3-5% battery drop over night only. When it locks up during the night and I reset it in the morning then battery usually drops much more (e.g. 30-50% is gone). Maybe it's caused by some hanging/deadlocked driver.
If you full factory reset and flashed then i'd say some app of yours is causing the issue.

In fact I got the device in dec 2012. Started to set it up and then decided to root it (including full factory reset). I only have a very minor amount of system-level applications installed. Actually the main reason to root was to use Voltage Control as I intended to limit clock rates and (if possible) voltages the same way I was used to do it on my Galaxy Tab 7 (P1000) where I was very pleased with 6-days battery lifetime.
Initially I found the minimum clock rate was set to 1GHz and I have reduced it to 304MHz (minimum with stock kernel). When I discovered first freezes/lock-ups then I reverted to default settings and found it still locking up occasionally. Meanwhile I am using _motley kernel which seems to include some voltage mod as well. Although Voltage Control does not show options to modify voltages. Then I found Trickster MOD which shows some voltage control but it seems to have no effect (at least I was used my galaxy tab to crash when undervolting too much and it's pretty "strange" to be able to set all clock voltages to 0.6V while still running stable; so I guess the settings won't have any effect right now).
I have also tried to remove all modifications and applications and/or profiles which could cause the issue without any difference. Even when run stock settings it occasionally completely locks-up the device.
Edit: I was wrong regarding voltages. In fact I found my device happily works at 1134MHz using 600mV. Since I am used to limit max clock rates to 810MHz I could simply put all voltages to 600mV without seeing a crash/reboot.
CAUTION: This does not necessarily have to apply to all devices. My one is "faster" binned Rev. 11 device. Some voltages of different users are collected here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnlqtEwFJwR6dE55WkZYSThEM3U4SGtKMVl2V1VqMmc#gid=0

[Q] RAM test app for Note 3 / Android?

Hi all,
Is there some kind of RAM test app (like memtest x86 for Windows/DOS) for the Note 3 / Android devices ?
Lately my Note 3 started to reboot out of the blue, many 'xxxx has stopped' errors.
I was still on 4.2 stock (root) so I decided to upgrade to an custom KK ROM.
The usual 5 mins to leave the phone alone was not enough, immediate freezes. It seemed that removing the battery and putting it back in fixes it for a few mins but then I get the same freeze.
Nothing responds and the area around the camera gets hot. So I tried the stock ROM and various other custom ROMS and recovery's. Nothing helped, exactly the same, freeze within minutes.
So I did a cpu stress test, that went fine CPU temperature was also normal, but still it felt hot around the camera. Bootloader was up to date.
So in the store they told me it could be the RAM. They also told me that they saw I tried an custom ROM and I lost my warranty. I reminded them of the non-conformity in Europe and they quickly changed their judgement.
They said 3 weeks at most before I get it back...
Now I've got an nice Nokia 206 Blue
But to get back at my question: Is there is any app to test the RAM? And has anyone else experienced these kind of problems?
stability test from play store may help you. also check check 3c toolbox, it does not have proper memory test, at least I didn't see one, but it has about 60, probably more, different utilities, like system and kernel logs, sd memory speed test, device recorder, cpu temp monitor etc.
if the area around camera is getting hot, maybe that's the problem? if the cores get stock at full speed, they would overheat, start thermal throttling and then errors would start showing up.
same problem
I have the same problem with my note 3 LTE, is there any solution?

I9505 lollipop laggy

I have an I9505 running lollipop and struggling to address intermittent lag.
Broadly speaking the phone starts off working well, snappy.. but after a while can start to lag. By this I mean a press on the home button may result in a 20s+ delay for the task manager to come up. Switching a task may be slow, the keyboard may take 10-20s to appear, the screen may be mostly blank for a while. It doesn't crash, and does "come back" but it's nearly unusable. Usually once switched to a task and settled down scrolling is ok. then it may work just fine, snappy for a while
I don't see oddly high figures in the various stats I can see - cpu time isn't excessive. memory is harder to interpret and at times I do see kswapd busy just after a wakeup.. so my suspicion is it's a memory leak but one I can't prove
I've tried alternative kernels - hulk, imperium, and they don't appear to help matters at all.
The lollipop build was clean & Current firmware is I9505XXUHOD7, BTU
I am rooted and have progressively disabled various packages I don't use in an effort to lighten the environment
I've disabled animations (a cause of memory leaks in 5.0.1, though supposedly not affecting samsung touchwiz)
I am a software engineer and very familar with better battery stats, gsam, even a quick peruse through dumps via adb yet still haven't got to the bottom of my issue. I'm also very aware there's little in the way of solid facts to help debug a problem in this posting......
The next step is going to be a strip back - clean install, slow addition of apps. In the meantime can anyone identify any issues they've seen with any particular apps?

I should add that I did previously use CM12 and that left a little laggy too, though not tried CM12.1 . The two factors holding me back - a) better/reliable camera in TW b) Beep'n'go - love the app. works everywhere unlike every other loyalty card app I've tried (uses proximity sensor pulsing, Samsung TW specific)

Hi,
try to disable swap devices, if there is any. If I know well, stock Lollipop ROM uses compressed swap devices in memory, like in stock KitKat ROM (zram).
In a terminal/shell:
- List currently used swap devices:
Code:
cat /proc/swaps
- Switch to root:
Code:
su
- Disable swap devices:
Code:
swapoff /dev/swapdevice
or if you have Busybox installed:
Code:
busybox swapoff /dev/swapdevice
Where /dev/swapdevice is the swap device/partition, which you want to disable.
It's the best to do this in some kind of init.d scripts before the system starts.
I am on still KitKat+rooted, but this should work on Lollipop, too.
Good luck!

I think this is the best thing to do. I suffered a weird wifi issue that no else had. A fresh/clean install of the same lollipop ROM and kernel fixed it. Haven't noticed any apps causing lag on lollipop.

Workaround for mmc_read_failed and mmc_write_failed errors

As many others here I started to have mmc_read and mmc_write errors with my N910F plus freezes and restarts or no boot. For me is another case of programmed obsolescence from our beloved Samy as I previously had with the Note 2 chip bug. I supposed that the problem comes from overheating (from a short-circuit or a failing transistor) and I got confirmed. The phone cpu and gpu go up to 90-100deg Celsius. In case you still want to keep your phone and save money until the Note 8 is out here is a possible workaround:
- In case you get mmc errors when flashing with odin you have to take out the battery an keep them both somwhere cool for 15 minutes. Then flash immediatly after starting in download mode, before is heating again.
-If you managed to boot and root you can install Kernel Adiutor or something similar and keep the processors at a max frequency around 1000MHz .
For me it worked and after 2 weeks of testing all kinds roms with repartitioningn, nand erase etc. I have a working if little less performant phone for a week now.
Edit: Device Control is another app that seem more stable and it has a thermal dedicated control over CPUs. Even with intensive use the phone doesn't freeze now. It still needs to be cool to boot.*I also flashed RamKernel and I don't know it KernelAdiutor works with factory kernel.
Edit2: Wakelock app with level 4 setting > 3 days and going with no lag and no restart. So maybe all above is wrong...

S8+ Intense Lag/Glithces after May Update (last update)

Hi there,
The S8+ (Exynos) was the smoothest phone I've ever had. It ran perfectly, with no lag/stutter whatsoever, it was butter smooth. That until the last update...(The May update with Bluetooth and SD card stability ; Android May security patch).
Now, the phone lags/stutters/drops frames in everything - it affects the UI animations, the scrolling in almost every app (even in settings), any game (even the least demanding game), browsing, the phone also has keyboard input lag. It also scores very low scores in benchmark apps (about half of what it should score). The phone also heats up for no reason, especially during charging (it was never heating up before the update).
What I've tried (with no effect):
- Disabling all features from Settings, down to the smallest details. Disabling all bloatware apps from settings (Samsung apps, Word, etc.).
- Cleaning Cache/RAM/Junk files with Device Maintenance, Clean Master and SD Maid (and uninstalling those apps afterwards)
- Manually cleaning cache from all apps (all 300+ of them, including system apps)
- Manually force stopping all apps (all 300+ of them)
- Uninstalling all User-installed apps
- Wipe Cache from Recovery Mode
- Manually stopping all running Services from Developer options
- Setting no backround services option in Developer options
- Disabling all safe-to-disable apps (including system ones) using BK disabler
- Several Restarts
- Complete factory reset (from Recovery Mode) and instaliing all apps from scratch. Then, doing all the things above.
----
PS: Animations are not only lagging/stuttering, but they are also glitching in some way (hard to describe, but little artifacts appear when minimizing/maximizing apps).
The screen also developed slight burn in (visible on gray image) in the notification and navigation bar area, although I use it with less than 50% brightness and with AOD disabled
Nothing worked. The phone has very brief moments when the animation lag dissapears, but then it starts back. The phone is now working worse than it did with the Battery Saving Option activated before the update.
I am aware that probably most of you don't have this issue. If you know anything that could help, please tell me.
Should I take it to warranty ? ( I'm afraid that they will open it up and it will loose its water resistance)
Thanks.
There is a dedicated S8+ forum section:

A lot of the things you've done are probably what killed your performance. Disabling an app that another app is dependent on can muck up the latter. Similarly, poorly written low quality apps can be resources drains and may not play well with others. My virgin S8+ is shockingly smooth and I could care less about dormant apps I don't use being active or disabled as long as my phone performs well. I'd suggest a hard reset from recovery, loading your apps of respectable quality, and leaving your phone alone and enjoying it rather than turning it in to a science project.
Same issue here, no app disabled or locked but my S8+ is very slow and lagful.
@ m.tomescu
You know, when you factory reset because of problems, first thing you do is checking if the problem is gone. Only then are you supposed to reinstall your apps one by one.
Is it already bad after factory reset? Then your phone needs a repair, which most likely be a new motherboard.
When performed by Samsung official repair center, your phone will still have the same water resistance.
For a quick test you can enable safe mode, that will exclude everything you've installed.
PS. No lag here on exynos and latest update.

Mine runs like a champ smooth and fast I personally don't like animation I disabled them. I have snap dragon virant I disabled like 25 bloatware with package disabler I have good battery and smooth experience I don't know why Urs is lagging.
I had similar issues on my S7 Edge, with updates destroying battery life. Still, I'd suggest doing a factory reset, installing your most needed apps first and just try using the phone for a week. No prodding, no monitoring etc, just use it and let the phone learn your routine, which data to cache etc and see how things are after.
