Is it possible to have some custom ROMs for ZenFone 2 ZE500CL in future? Somebody hear me? Someone? People?

Currently trying to find devs to help me out with this, I have a bit of an Idea of what I'm doing but need help with making sure I've got the right build flags and toolchains to make a bootable aosp rom for this device.

What about custom recovery? Do you have TWRP or CWM for our phone?

Right now its tethered, but I'm working on a safestrap to counter the lack of unlocked bootloader.

I would cry...in a good way, if you could get this phone safestrapped.
Also... How are some people unlocking there bootloaders with the Asus unlock tool, mine won't unlock. I've had 2 of these phones, both the same. No unlock.

I think it might be because technically the ZF2e and the ZE500CL are not the same phone. I mean they have the same processor, screen, and body, but the ZF2e is locked to AT&T, which might be blocking the bootloader unlock.

It could also be a lack of space on the internal storage but it's more likely that it won't unlock because of the serial number indicating that it is a zf2e and not the ze500cl.

I've ported boot and recovery from zenfone5 successfully , but I need help flashing the system folder.

@muhammad_fatah could you post your work. I've tried zipME, android script creator, kitchen, but nothing i do can create a working updater script to flash anything. AND most zips won't flash, like certain themed apps, mods, almost nothing will flash except super su and xposed

Porting, flashing won't help. Need to compile CM ROM from source. Do you have the device and vendor tree of our phone? Kernel source is already there , need device and vendor tree to get started porting cm.

I do not, and with my locked bootloader (att) i can't flash another kernel. So any rom i flash has to be based off stock, or so heavily modded it looks like cm. ??

This method doesn't work for some. Particularly those with the Zenfone 2E variant.

Correct, this is the 2e (economy) version from att, anything att nowadays is unlockable, i even bought a samsung s5 before i knew that, you can't even root that phone, so needless to say, att users have to sit on the bench while everyone else gets to ride the rides

So I posted a thread here asking for help (the phone was functional at this point) and one user suggested a root method to try out in the comments there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2379833

Ouch. Your WiFi is broken because he told you to flash a US VZW (XT-907) firmware.
Okay. First, you should try to find a 201M restore file. That will get your WiFi back. Next, since you've got a Dev edition, you can bootloader unlock and install a custom recovery, then flash a root zip
EDIT: Found it

While the link I gave him was unidentified as to warnings to non vzw users (now fixed) , the flashing of vzw sw comes in step 8 clearly he would have had to have pulled it from a xml himself if he even got that far. And if he did it would have been from reading the rzr op. As the bare motochopper has no vzw sw inside.

I didn't get the system img at all. I just wanted to flash the superuser files to /data which I thought would set me up to flash the whole thing with Rom manager.
Anyway, thank you for the help. I am downloading the firmware you linked to now. This guide tells me to edit the XML file and remove the getvar text from it, should this apply here as well? (Edit: Cant post outside links, but I think you get my point)
I'm going to use RSD 6.1.4 to restore the firmware. Any further instructions would be appreciated as I have never done this before.

Dear sir,
I'd like you to buy a ticket to Karachi right now because I'd run all the way to the airport to KISS YOU until the police dragged me away.
The process worked. My wifi just turned back on. Thank you very much for the weekend stress relief!
I think I'm gonna give up on the idea of rooting this thing until there's a more reliable method available. Also, if anyone has the same issue then take note: I did remove the getvar commands when using RSD.

I am glad SC took care of you & I am sorry I lead you in that direction.
Please fill in some details for others?
How do you have a path to the newer sw? Is it your carriers ota? If you can obtain the same in the xml form there is an easy root using a modded ver w/ unlocked phone. The ota.zip could also be useful if you take it while you have root. It resides in /cache.
Thank you

It wasn't your fault for trying to help, so it's ok. I'm glad a solution existed.
I'm more than willing to answer the questions, but I am a layman here so please explain some things for me: What do you mean by SW? I just installed the update by going into about phone -> system update on Wifi. The carriers here don't even support 3G, much less 4G (So now you know why Wifi was important for me).
The phone came unlocked day one when I bought it from a friend's friend. I don't know if he did it that way or if it comes unlocked because it is the developer edition.
I installed CW Recovery using Fastboot. I installed the incorrect superuser file using Motofail which wrote the superuser file but failed at all other steps. I was then unable to either access or remove this superuser apk file.
Since I am back on 4.0.4. now, what's the easy way to get root access and superuser permissions that you mention? I wish other XT902 owners would post here too, generating interest would really help in getting development support for this phone.

Lol no problem, glad to know it worked. Getting root is actually really simple since you're unlocked. All you need to do is flash a custom recovery and flash a root .zip from there... No exploits required
I can try to write up a guide to that if you want

Once you root on 404 you can grab your update.zip & copy it to your sd . Any rooting exploit would evolve from that Or the newest xml ver of the 404 you just flashed from rsd. You may be able to request it from your carrier.
---------- Post added at 01:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:40 PM ----------
You can paste the mods from my vzw restore (no vzw software will be used) into the 404 xml & obtain root from a preinstalled cwmr! Then maintain root with voodoo for your ota.
I will help you just read the op. Link is in my signature.

Okay now that the z1s has been rooted what are we going to do?
Step one i suggest that you back up your TA partition using this method either one works fine.

Step two use @jcase method for root.

There has to be a way since certain z1 roms work with locked boatloads using a stock kernel. O I am with you I'll also be up all night.
Good to see you guys are willing to be up all night for this, unfortunately almost all the Z2 developers had "vanished" (sleeping, offline or not reading) since the root exploit became known... we're still waiting for a working root toolkit. Nice to see that something is moving here though

Yes, TA partition only needs to be backed up if you are going to unlock the bootloader. Which I still believe can not be done on the Z1S

The z2 exploit uses the same vuln as this (and my Motorola Pie exploit). Only difference is the public disclosure didn't contain how I was exploiting it. I don't think we can target the same process on the z2, would need to mount a different attack using the same vuln (like they did)

I was thinking that I was going to give TWRP for the international version a try until they make one specifically for the VZN variant. You can backup your rom and stuff but if you want to restore it you'll need to change the build.prop to reflect an international variant of the phone.
The code would be KLTE

More or less i was excited to have root back. I do and i thought I'd try somethings that worked for other samsung versions. Now that the LG G4 root has been made available, what about the ROMs and such?

Hi, the G4 root was made available today and without asking for ETAs (I know ya'll hate that), I'm curious as to how many ROMs and Kernels you think will be made available for it over time? Do you think that there will be as many available as there were for the G3? I do understand that these things take time and a lot of hard work, and I'll be patient, but I'm still super excited to get mine on stock lollipop and improve the battery life (maybe?).
I'm sure enough will be out soon. Wait a day or three.

Patience young grasshopper. All will be well.
I had almost given up hope on my G4, but now. I see the light at the end of that glorious 16MP OIS camera which I have grown to love, roll on the roms and amazing dev support we all saw for the G3.
I just want to know what apps or widgets can I remove from the T-Mobile g4 that will help the phone have a better battery life or have better performance

Gonna be worth the wait!
You cant install roms without a custom recovery, and in order to get cutom recovery you need the bootloader unlocked. Only model currently able to unlock the bootloader is the EU model.

You can unlock the T-Mobile version by checking enable oem unlock under developer options. Once rooted you can use flashify to flash twrp. Its under original android development under the tmobile g4 forums if any other t mobile users need it. I've already used it to create a backup and it's working fine.

Pretty much this.
Root simply means we have access to system files to manage them according to our own liking.
In order to flash ROM's, your bootloader needs to be unlocked. The reason why root was so easily available on the H815 EUR model is because the bootloader was unlockable officially through LG, which meant simply flashing a custom recovery, in this case TWRP, then flashing SuperSU.zip gives you full root access. H815 EUR users have had it good for a while now, I sure envy them! But once a method to unlock the bootloader becomes available, we'll be able to flash custom ROM's and the whole lot. As with anything else - it's just a matter of time.
Just going to hop in here to state that I'll be working to bring AICP to the G4 ASAP.

Been there, done that today. Got TWRP installed and got rid of the extra crap Tmobile put on here.
I would just be happy with a debloated stock rom with some added options such as center clock and to clean up the status bar icon clutter (alarm, NFC, 2 data icons, battery mod.

I honestly do not know why OEM's don't let us do that already. It's so utterly bizarre. In this day and age, we really shouldn't have to go to such extents for slightly more convenient/better looking icons in the status bar.
At least Sony lets its users customise the status bar a bit. My Xperia Z3+ lets me customise what icons are shown, but won't let me move the clock or change the battery icon.
The G4 will be a speed demon if it gets CM12.1 My only worry being the camera and if it'll still produce amazing shots. I know that the physical camera itself with its f1.8 aperture lens is the reason why low light shots are amazing, but I wonder how much of it is down to the software's post processing. Time will tell, I hope.

To my knowledge, using the Loki method does not require an unlocked bootloader.

Yeah, the G2 never got an unlocked bootloader. Loki and Bump got around that.

ALL THINGS ROOT, BOOTLOADER, ETC

Good day all,
I noticed several cluttered threads in Q&A that are becoming more of a discussion than question and answer format.
I wanted to make this thread as a one stop shop for all things Root and Bootloader related for the G-930T (Tmobile Galaxy Note 7).
Please discuss root, bootloader and work with each other in here.
Please do not discuss the bounty in here, and do not clutter the bounty thread with casual conversation about root.
Cheers,
Baja

Well we know the Bootloader is locked and can only be unlocked by Samsung( That's not gonna happen).
Based on what happened and is continuing to happen with the S7 there is a possibility of achieving Root on the N7(ENG) which I will not be a guinea pig and try. I'm sure others will if and when it's available.

I second this. Just wish we could keep samsung pay after root. Not gonna happen but wishful thinking.

Just want to note that you may not want to take any updates if you plan on rooting in the future (if an exploit is available).

Not true on my Nexus 6 we could not use Android pay with root. But someone came up with a walk around systemless root and it worked.

No I know what he said but if there can be a walk around for one (should) be able to do one for the other.

not possible if you trip knox and in order to get root you need to trip knox.

One of them is from Google and doesn't care about Knoxx and the other is from Samsung and does care about Knoxx. Two completely different things. The Samsung Pay not working after Knoxx is tripped has been going on for a year as of tomorrow. The systemless root that doesn't trip Knoxx is one thing but as soon as you start flashing, kiss Samsung Pay goodbye.
Yep, and worst of all. Once it's tripped, Samsung pay will never work again on that device

Luckily for me, if root becomes available its a no-brainer. Samsung pay doesn't support my bank, and I won't have a credit card. Even if Samsung Pay would work for me, it would still be an easy choice to have root instead. I would like to play around with altering the speaker volume, deleting bloatware, making tweaks, ad blocking, etc.
Did anyone ever get the files that Beans asked for over to him?
Why can't those of us with t variants just flash the unlocked w8 bootloader? Seems like we've been left an out? Yes?

In order for you to flash anything to any bootloader, it needs to be unlocked. With it locked Odin says it can't. So till the note 7 gets unlocked (in time) we have to wait. Phone only few days old, be work around soon.

That is true. Android 7 Nougat will have more security features that Samsung is going to take advantage of with the Galaxy Note 7. That may make unlocking bootloader and rooting even more difficult.

It looks like the sprint guys have obtained an engineering bootloader/kernel. Someone may be able to do something with this for us..

I got the stock n930t boot.img but im wondering is how would i go by making a kernel "engboot". I also removed dm-verity but that didn't work. All i get is a failed message through odin. Another testing i have done is I even just modified one simple thing in the stock kernel say in default.prop ro.secure=1 to =0 and i still get a failed messsge. Once i flashed the stock unmodified version of the kernel i would get a success message and works which means any modification to the kernel will cause it to fail i just have to see what in the kernel checks for md5 changes or it may be something else if more devs can help together, then we can get this working.

Bro, please stop trying. This is obviously far above your skill level.
1. There is no way to convert a kernel to an "engboot."
2. The bootloader is LOCKED, so anything you do to the kernel's ramdisk will obviously not work because the whole point of dm-verity and a locked bootloader, among other things, is to stop the modification of system images, including the kernel ramdisk. Surely you didn't think it would be as easy as unpacking the boot.img, changing the ro.secure value from 1 to 0, then repacking..... did you?
3. The kernel doesn't "check" for anything MD5 related.
4. The bootloader is rejecting your changes, not the kernel.
5. Nothing you do to the boot.img, no matter how many devs you have, will do any good.
Hang tight, guys. We're trying everything we can.
