nexus 4 shutdown inmediately after turning on - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a total headache due to an issue with my nexus 4. From time to time it started to shutdown randomly, but now when I turn on the phone the shutdown screen appears as soon as the phone asks me for the pin code. I have wiped all types of memory from the recovery, and I have installed different roms. The problem seems to be random, it can shutdown in a few minutes, in hours or in the pin code screen. Now my problem is that it always turn off in the pin code screen. I do not know what else to do, I am not sure if it is a software issue, a hardware issue or a combination of these two possible reasons. I would apreciate any type of help. Thanks!

Have you tried reverting to latest factory image?

Sounds like a battery issue to me. Luckily for you , it's cheap nowadays and easy enough to install. Now , you said you can boot the device. I want you to install 3c toolbox , give it root , open up battery manager and check the voltage of your battery. Leave maH retrieval method as automatic. Depending on the percentage , it should be between 3.4 and 4.2. If your battery is full it should be around 4.2. Watch for sudden drops in voltage , that might be the cause of your issue. If the voltage drops below 3.2 , it's dead. You gotta replace it.

Hi, thanks. The battery replacement was the first solution I have tried, and it was useless . I did what you said and the battery voltage is ok.

Okay , have you ever opened the device ? If so the power button is quite fragile and has a tendency to break , i was wondering if that might have malfunctioned. That requires some advanced tinkering though. Or alternatively you could buy one and replace the original since it's very cheap. Otherwise i would have you solder a switch on the board.

HD2 HUGE BATTERY DRAIN 1% every 1 minute

Hi my hd2 is on a stock windows mobile rom and has a huge battery drain, every 1 minute or so i lose 1% of my battery and even on standby its the same.
Please can anyone help!!!! I have just flashed a stock rom from sd and have nothing on it and it still does it!
did you flash another radio rom? battery performance has a lot to do with it.
formatting your sd card could also help.
I've tried formatting my sd card and have tried flashing many radio roms right now im on the latest one (2.15...) and still it does it.
well the latest doesn't mean that it's the best for you. it depends on your carrier and area. but this wouldn't result in such a high battery drain.
sorry i can't help you then. i would try to make a freash install with task 29 and everything and if it's still not better try another battery.
Ive tried everything..no one knows anything about it
Thanks anyways
Would appreciate if anyone else has this problem too?
Sounds more like your battery is on the way out. Do you have another you could test?
Yupp, i have 3 standard htc batterys and 2 of them are brand new and still it happens
You did not say how long you have had the HD2, whether this problem has occurred from the beginning, or had just recently started. If it's been that way from the time you got it, it needs to go back to the vendor/seller for replacement. If it has suddenly started, what has changed? Other recent threads here note that a change in GMail was causing problems with high CPU levels and fast battery drain. I believe you said in one response that two of your three batteries have this problem. I assume that one of the batteries does not. If so, it sounds like bad batteries.
Sorry i meant to say that every battery that i try, it still has the problem. And also i brought this phone (used) with no problems and i put android on it, one day it turned extremely hot whilst i put it on charge, then what used to happen was whenever i left my phone on standby (screen off) my phone would switch off. But then i changed my charger cable and that problem was fixed but now i have this problem.
In that case could be the cable not supplying enough charge to the battery, or the phone reading battery stats incorrectly. Other than that I'm at a loss.
Tried everything :/
Thanks anyways I guess its just time for the bin :/

Are you using Gmail? There have been a lot of reports about overheating and battery drain from gmail accounts. Evidently there was some change in the way Google handles their accounts.
Nope, not using gmail
theres nothing on my rom as i just flashed it.
if you flashed it new and the problems started at this point you can try to wipe the battery stats in cwm. don't really now what exactly that does but it's worth a try.

thats providing hes running it and not using a stock winmo 6.5 rom
Yeah, im using a stock windowsmobile rom so no clockworkmod unfortunately..
oh right. there was something with windows on this phone ^^ sorry already forgot that.
Hi, did you try the following?
Switch off the phone completely and then remove the battery for approx. 15 to 20 seconds. Then put it in again and start the phone.
When I used this procedure the battery drain was normal again.
BR rainer
tried that still no luck :/
Take out the sim AND sd card. Maybe one of them is going bad.

Atrix won't boot (not a dead battery)

First off, I've done a search and haven't found a problem quite like this, as far as I can tell. My wife's phone about once a week won't turn on. I plug it into the wall charger, computer, nothing. Not even past the dual core screen. HOWEVER, I pop off the back cover, take out the battery, put it back in and it boots up. The battery can be nearly full and it still does it. It doesn't happen all the time. Just about once a week. The battery life seems to be fine, and it doesn't drain abnormally fast.
Is this a battery that is bad? I'm on stock OS.

sounds like screen of death, the phone going into a permanent sleep mode. it happens to some of them, try to set your minimum clock speed to 316 or higher, it seems to have fixed the problem with some people.

Is there some app to do this without rooting? I can root it, as I've rooted other devices, but I was just wondering.

as far as i know, you'll need root access to do it. i use Rom Toolbox to manage my CPU, and everything else.

Just root the toaster!
It will not avoid your warranty *well it does* however you're able to use it (if you're in USA).
I had similar problem.
For me I think it was problem with the battery contacts. I don't think there was enough electrical current coming through. Try playing with the battery, after many nervy attempts, I got it right and since then there was no problem.

[q](STUCK) MULTIPLE ISSUES

Hey guys.
there are several major problems with my device.
first of all, lets see what we have here.
Exynos powered SM-N900 note 3 device
About 2 months old
rooted with CF- Auto Root
4.4.2 N900XXUDNA6_N900SERDNA6_SER firmware
that was the situation of device when the first problem showed itself.
Whiel i was watching video from an sd card, suddenly ı realised even if the device is on charge, (wall type) the battery percentage was dropping. when ı saw that, ı stopped watching the video, put down the phone and went to sleep. (it was 15 % at that time)
after 8 hours of proper sleep, I took my phone and saw that it was just 60%.
then ı began searching for slow charging issues. tried exactly everything about it, no luck. ( 5 different brands of different cables, 3 different brands of wall chargers, 2 different original note 3 batteries. tried both for AC and USB charging.)
All of them gave me the same result of charging current of 300 mah.
then ı tried all the wipe options, (wipe from recovery, factory reset from the settings menu, flashing another firmware which is CAC-N900XXUDNA8-20140210150816. ) still no luck. and things started to get worse.
a pain in the ass lag showed up, I'cant even use the camera. its like it comes and goes, but most of the time its there.
slow charging still continues, sometimes it does not charge at all,(had to reset couple of times) and when it charges, it's always 300 Mah and shows in the battery section as USB all the time ( even if I'm charging with the wall charger) ( already tried cache wipe for this, didn't make any difference.)
When I plug it to the PC, it does not recognize the device as a usb device, nor Kies, but ODİN does. (thankfully).
got this really weird screen, and some other screens close to it. (the screen actually faded away like in the picture ı uploaded. waited for it to go out for 10-15 seconds when ı pushed the wake button, the screen came itself just like nothing else happened 10 seconds ago!)
those are my problems, and the device is rooted, there is no warranty issue, so that means I'm stuck. it's not my first android device, and i consider myself just above average android user, but my hands are tied for this. any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!!
Really? No one can answer that?

Did u try charging when mobile is off?if not give a try
Thanks for the reply.
Yeah I tried that. It kind of shortens the time of charging, but still, there are also other problems and some way ı think all of them are connected. That can be a solution only for slow charging, but the other issues still there.

may all your problems linked each other possible, try to uninstall third party apps you have installed, may some app is causing all the problems.

I'm afraid that is also not a solution, because i already performed a full wipe and flashed a clean firmware, which cleared all 3rd party apps, still problems go on.
appreciate the effort though!

are you suggesting EFS back-up /restore?
By the way, i have fresh brand new issues!!
now device doesn't close, if i close it and connect it to a charger, it reboots itself to recovery mode!!!
ı discovered something about the lag issue. if i run the cpu enough, (like playing games) lag goes out. when ı quit the game, it turns back!!
I opened up cpu monitor from the developer options, everytime lag shows up, i see from the cpu list this thing:
irq/563-sii8240
I think this causes all of my problems.
any ideas???

It looks like a problem with a interrupt of the video driver. I read you already flashed a other firmware, correct?
up
Have you installed any apps to monitor battery drain? I use GSAM Battery Monitor and every time I start to see weird things with my battery, I have a look to see which app is running wild. Removing the app usually sets my phone back to very good battery life. The other day HD Widgets updated their app and all of a sudden I was dropping battery life about 15% per hour when hardly using the phone. HD was the culprit, removing it put me back to normal again. This happens often when companies update their apps.
One other thing, does you phone run hot? In the notification screen, you can see the current temp of your phone. If your battery is draining fast, it will run hot.
Thank you for the feedback. I downloaded the app, here are my first results. Do you think its normal that my kernel alone 74% ? I recently turned into cvm recovery, any ideas for alternative kernels?

[Q] Nexus 4 random shuts down itself

I got nexus 4, and problem is that now and then it shuts down itself... Battery is charging ok, but after working few minutes or hours (no specific time) it just shuts down (idle or working)...
Phone is not rooted, I tried factory reset, and that didn't help either...
Currently it is on 5.0.1, I got it with this version of software so I don't know did this happen earlier on 5.0 or 4.4...
I wanted to do complete root but i'm afraid that it would shutdown itself during the process..
Does anyone knows what can be the problem??
Have you tried flashing the 5.0.1 factory image through fastboot?
Even I am facing the same problem. But for me it does not show shutting down also. It just blanks out at around 40% battery.
Had the exact same problem with my phone until I rooted the phone and changed to a non-stock rom and have not had the problem since.
Hi guys don't know if this helps because mine is slightly different. Mine is reboot itself.
My suspicion is on ram, maybe the device is out ram and then reboot itself, maybe this goes the same to shut down idk (please correct me if I'm wrong). Recently I've put gravity box and I can see how much ram left when I tap the application switcher, it was mind blowing for me. I often find that when you open several application the number of ram available can reach below 500mb (especially chrome tabs, it do have a lot of ram to use) I mean it's a 2 gb ram device wow. Every few days I've checked that when the idle ram is over a gig I do reboot manually. That way my problem of random reboot vanished. Good luck

Screen will not wake from sleep
The device will randomly not wake from a sleep state, and is happening more frequently. I've read that it's possibly linked to a motherboard issue. I have root, TWRP, Xposed. Will flashing a different kernel possibly resolve the issue?
I bought an N4 from eBay and it worked perfectly for months on stock rooted Lollipop. Then it suddenly started to randomly shut down - not reboot, just a sudden buzz and "Power off". I've tried Marshmallow, Chroma, and now Cyanogenmod latest dailies. Plus a new battery (an eBay special, contacts didn't align with screws, but since another suggested fix was to leave the connection screwless that's fine - it seems to hold a charge and works fine).
So my question is - even though the power button seems to be clicky and ok, is it worth trying a new one? I know that it's mainly suggested for random reboots, but maybe it's related?
Or any other bright suggestions? Any help much appreciated.
I bought a new power & volume button and the same "power off" still happens - sometimes immediately on boot, sometimes after a period when it seems to be going ok..
Anyone have any ideas at all which hardware may be responsible? I doubt it's software, since the same happens on all ROMs, rooted or not.
I had the same issue until I reformatted all partitions and installed stock 5.1.1 Now reboots are gone. Looks like my issue was software related. The only change from stock was stability mode from Root Booster
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Thanks, Hjicons. I wish I were so lucky...
As I said, different ROMS, root/no root, make no difference. It occasionally runs for a day or so, but as soon as I reboot it's back to immediate "power off".
On the plus side, it's *astonishingly* strong. I treat all my phones with kid gloves - always in a completely empty pocket, no keys or coins, in a plastic bag if there's the slightest threat of rain (even my water-resistant Nexus 6), I set them down gently on surfaces, yadda yadda yadda...
So in frustration, hoping to jar whatever component into proper life, I've banged it hard, very hard, on a mousemat, all four corners, no difference. And last night in a fury of annoyance, to stop myself pointlessly wasting time trying to fix the damn thing, I tried to smash the front glass with a heavy torch and the handle of a big screwdriver, hard enough to bring my wife in from another room to find out what the banging was. Not a scratch, not a crack. Gorilla glass is as strong as they claim it is.
But still not working...

Nexus 6P Random shutdowns/reboots.

Hello,
Forever pretty much I've been experiencing issues with my nexus 6p. I got it second hand but it seemed fine when I got it. Now, however, after a little inactivity, I find that unlock my phone will cause it to crash or reboot instantly. Its right after it unlocks that it does this. It's not every time but it happens a lot. It also sometimes happens a little bit after unlocking the phone after inactivity. Its like when it needs to drain more power from the battery than its used to it will just crash on me.
The only real thing that prevents this is keeping the phone on charge. Then again, it has happened before where it will still die on me. I've replaced pretty much everything on the phone with the exception of the charging board and the main board. So stuff like the screen and battery have been replaced (+more). Not sure what is causing it. I've had this issue before on stock android but at the moment I'm running the final version of Resurrection Remix on Nougat.
How would I go about troubleshooting this?

Good observation. It is true that the reboot happens because of higher performance. It is caused by the four higher performance cores of the CPU starting to work. There is a fix.
What it does is to shutdown those four cores and you will be able to use only four of the lower performance but power efficient cores.
Follow the link :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guide-fix-nexus-6p-bootloop-death-blod-t3640279
Sorry for my late reply...
Thanks for the solution, but it seems like a very drastic trade-off for a fix. Is there nothing I can try to fix this like a system or boot.img patch that does something other than disable cores?
Either way, thank you.

My 6p just recently encountered the same symptoms as yours. Only way to keep it from rebooting is keeping it plugged in. I've found something that has worked for me so far, maybe it will work for you too. It seems like disabling the Doze feature has fixed this problem for me. I'm not rooted, so I used adb command to do so. Here is a link for the instructions. Hope this helps you too. In the instructions,
it show you how to enable, but can be used to disable with one simple change.
