Possible to remote desktop INTO shield tv? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I already have a way to remote desktop to my PC from the shield tv, but I would like to be able to remote desktop into my shield TV from another device, like my pc, or smartphone. is this possible? Methods i've tried so far don't seem to work.
Also, im rooted.

There are VNC servers for Android. Give that a shot.

TeamViewer Host should work in theory. Maybe it requires a full version of Android?

With network debugging enabled I have been able to remote in to my shield using Vysor - a chrome extension. Works pretty well.

tried this numerous times, with and without root. teamviewer sees and connects to the shield but when actually trying to display the screen for remote desktop, nothing appears.

Will try this, which should work locally, and if so, thanks. But im curious on how to do this externally as well. (although just being able to do it from my local network should be enough)

On my Shield I can connect to Teamviewer Host, and I can bring up the desktop. When I try to mouse click on the desktop, the whole machine reboots (this is with root access).
I've got a dialog with Teamviewer support about this issue.

Thanks. sounds like you've gotten further than i have. I did get the screen to appear on my pc ONCE, and for a split second. ever since and before then, nothing. i dont even get the screen to pop up. ive tried everything i can think of. this was an issue with nexus player and fire tv devices as well. seems anything android tv-related operating systems won't play nice with teamviewer.

The response from Teamviewer is that the SATV is not currently supported, and that device support is added by popular demand.
So the more people who contact them, the better.

If you just would like to manage files on the Shield, AirDroid works pretty well. You need to sideload it to the Shield though.

I've got plenty of options for transferring files. Just want to remotely access the shield tv to play with things like settings and configuring stuff when im at my pc, or away from home, rather than having to wait till i get home all the time.

thanks for the heads up. I will contact teamviewer requesting shield tv support, and suggest anyone else visiting this thread to do the same.
if you google teamviewer and android tv, apparently they added support. it just seems to specific devices. i recall it not working right on my nexus player, and fire tv's either, so i dont know what "popular" android tv's teamviewer decides to support.

Hmm. Vysor does work over a LAN if you turn on ADB over TCP/IP. It might work over the Internet if you set up port forwarding, but it would have basically no security. Maybe an SSH tunnel would work?

Mobizen?
did you try mobizen? i was searching for something for my sony bravia android tv when i found this thread. Was trying some of your solutions. Mobizen used to work perfect for me on my android 4.4 box. Doesn't work on my Android TV though but perhaps for you guys it does. It's a great free app (and I'm not working for the guys)
kind regards

Subscribed. I tried droid VNC and it did not work. Also looking for a way to VNC into my nVidia Shield Android TV or any remote control (not just file transfer) that works locally or internet, I usually connect using OpenVPN to my home network...

Just for info.
Teamviewer on full Android Marshmallow for Shield TV works very well.

Install the remodroid app from the play store on your phone and the shield TV, set the Shield TV to Stream and the phone to Connect and you are now able to remotely viw your Shild TV from your phone.
I have flashed the Full Marshmallow OS and am running Kodi, as an FYI.

+1 This would be very useful, mainly for when connected via HDMI to a TV or playing music in a different room, then just use phone as a remote.
Point of interest, the game Crazy Snowboard from the market has an option where you can play on your tablet while controlling your snowboarder from an Android phone via wifi. Figured I'd mention it since this is along the same line as what we're looking for.

Havent tried it but this: market.android.com/details?id=com.iandrobot.andromouse.lite
or this: market.android.com/details?id=berserker.android.apps.blueputdroid
would probally work. Basically they just turn your phone into a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Theres many other apps like this, those are just two that i picked.
Im sure there are vnc servers apps out there for android. you could install a vnc client on your phone then remote in to the tablet with the vnc server running. That would be one way of doing it. That's not very elegant but would work.

I thought of this, and would work maybe 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time is if my tablet happens to be somewhere other than my house as it would then be on a different network and the client would not have a way to get to it, unless there are VNC servers that have a web service that broadcasts the tablets current location, similar to dyn-dns.

Hi,
I've found an app to control an android device from another android device. You have to install the app "DroidMote Client" on the device from which you want to control and install "DroidMote Server" on the device which you want to control. I'm using this on my HTC Desire to control my Transformer while it is connected to my TV. It works really good with this devices

Bluepurdroid is free on the market and works over bluetooth. You can choose to use a mousepointer to navigate your iconia, keyboard also works. You can also use a sixaxis controller. Haven't tried this on my A500 but works great on my ps3. The mouse and keyboard works just fine, like using a bluetoothkeyboard.
Great app for controlling the a500 while using it with a HDTV.
Something like teamviewer or vpn server?
hm while using team viewer to connect to pc in the popup window on pc there is a no. which is used to cennect to the device. Did someone tried to use this no. to connect back to the team viewer on the tablet?
i've been using DroidMote between my Iconia and my Fascinate for months running netflix and google music on my tv. definitely don't regret not getting a google tv device! ha. it runs great and yes you can use a wireless (usb) keyboard and mouse but most of us also own an android phone and they're much more convenient and one handed. just thought i'd put my two cents out there for anyone stumbling across this thread. totally worth the money, replaced my wii for HD netflix streaming!

Then it's remote access
So far I've seen an app to control pc from DROID. Try looking it up in Google play
through wi-fi or adsl connection?
Another possibility: Try Teamviewer - it works both ways.

Anyone got Droid VNC Server working and able to view from PC?

I've got Droid VNC Server up and running on my Nexus 7 but when I open a RealVNC viewer from a Windows 7 PC I get a scrambled display. I've tried all of the display settings on the VNC Server on the Nexus but none seem to work.
Has anyone managed to get this working on the Nexus?
I think this indicates a bug getting the screenshot, it's most likely the pixel buffer length is different from the display width.
I will send you a private message for another app that works.

The need to hook up the tablet to a PC with a USB cable after every reboot to restart the server means this isn't a great solution even if it can be made to work on the Nexus 7.

I noticed it but as the above user stated. It's too inconvenient having to connect to a pc to start it. Defeats the whole point of having it. Can easily mirror the device when it's tethered to the PC. If just like standard VNC server to work with 4.2 as it used to.
You have to root the device if you don't want to hook USB cable to pc to start it, then you can just press start/stop button. For non rooted device, you hook the phone to the pc, press a button to start the server, then disconnect the phone from the pc. You can remote to the phone afterwards as long as you don't power it off. In other words, once server started, no need at all to connect the phone to the pc.
My phone is not rooted, and seldom powers off, so I do this perhaps once a month, then you disconnect the phone from pc, which is not bad at all, just like a user would use USB cable to do data transfer. I don't know why it defeats the purpose, a few thousands of users are happy with it.

I can confirm that my machine is rooted but this didn't work as you described when I tried it. Neither the PC nor the button on the Nexus screen would start the server. Only had 15 mins to try it before getting a refund but it certainly wasn't plug-and-play
Thanks, that must be a bug, no wonder you mentioned a hang on device, if we found su binary, it will wait for 30secs to try the root way of starting the server, but somehow didn't work out on your device. What method did you use to root your device?
If you email to me, will try to send you debug version to test.
Which version of our app did you try? anything before v1.1.6 may have more issues on this.

I have been trying to use Fast Droid and Droid VNC on Nexus 7 but it always results in a scrambled image on a VNC viewer. I have tried various viewers, both on a Windows and Linux PC. Did anyone got the VNC working on Nexus 7?

I got scramble image too ..
anyone have the solution ?

Tough to believe that there is no working VNC server.

Really the best and easiest way to do that without emulation is to get a mhl cable assuming your device supports it. Then you'll have a mirrored connection on your pc monitor or TV if you want and can use it like your phone.

As far as I've seen on SockteQ's page and product brochure, it is targeted to tablets, and not for trivial smartphones (i.e. gives a view of an Android tablet screen in the prog window). Their efforts are great, but there's no clue for the trivial handsets user.

PIA VPN working on Fire Stick with Alexa

Not sure if anyone knew but PIA (Private Internet Access) does work on the Fire Stick with Alexa running 5.2.4.0 (I'm not sure if it works on 5.2.2.0). I will say it runs slower then running it through my router by half. Now to get this puppy rooted P.S. I give up on trying to upload pics.
To be more precise you are saying that the PIA Android app works fine on a FireTV Stick 2. Which is to be expected since the FTVS2's hardware is close to being as powerful as a FireTV 1 Box.
It's good to have confirmation. :good:

You don't, you just need to connect to the Wifi that already has the VPN working. The PIA Android App is only for those that want to run a VPN on a per device bases or if you can not run the VPN thru our router or secondary router. A router run VPN is always recommend due to specs. But being able to run it a FireTV device itself is a good second choice.

Some are able to run a Wifi signal as a repeater on a laptop or desktop. But running the app on the device itself is much less complicated.
Are you running PIA on a FTVS1 or FTVS2. Spec wise I would only recommend running it on a FTV1, FTV2 or FTVS2 but I bet it runs ok on a FTVS1 although those are way slow. Guess having only used FTV1's for myself & programed FTVS1's for my F&F's have giving me a slow experience with FTVS1's. Messed with a couple of FVTS2's recently. And I still would prefer my FTV1's speed & controller wise. I hope the GUI update for FTV1's gets release soon.
I have the 2nd gen. FTVS2 amd Kodi Krypton 17. I've seen some saying PIA doesn't work well on 1st gen, saying it is on, but doesn't change the IP. IP Vanish is said to work good with gen 1. I just pushed the APK to the stick from my laptop with mimimal ADB and fastboot. Pushed mouse toggle also and everything works fine. Have you looked at Schism, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiueM0jcL0k&t=603s

I mostly run/install FTG Builds (FireTVGuru Builds: http://firetvguru.net/) since those builds are the easiest builds to keep updated by folks that don't like to pay attention to things. But all of those are still Kodi v16.1 based.
I've seen the new Kodi v17-RC builds. I was gonna try Schim's first. Guess I got to get used to the new Kv17 layout. But got sidetracked by the SU /SDCard bug when updating my FTV1's....
Is it possible to have the PIA VPN enable automatically when Kodi is run but disable when you close out of the app? I was just curious since when I try to watch something on Amazon Prime it's blocked when the VPN is enabled.
I'm guessing probably not, just wondered.

With PIA you can set it for per app. You will need mouse toggle to reach the settings.

One other quick question. So I enabled it to use VPN in Kodi, but not use it in any other app. I still get a geographical error when trying to watch something regularly on Amazon prime. Do you happen to know if there another step I need to do in order to get it to work?
Thanks,
-J

Per app?
Can you point out that setting/method in PIA? I have not seen that option on the Windows, Mac or Android version.
Thank you.

The setting button is in the far upper right corner.

Thanks for that. I don't have the same options on my Mac!
...
nor on my Windows PC.
It is on my Android phone though!
I'd think that option would be (even) more useful on laptops/PC's.
