[Q] Nexus 4 On-Screen buttons

Hello, I am new to XDA developers and this is my first post here. Now my question is rather simple, yet I have not found a solution for it on the forums here. Now the issue is, I have owned an LG Nexus 4 (E960) for about a month now, and when ever I play games, the on screen buttons always seem to get in my way. Now my question is, how do you disable/re-enable the on screen buttons without rooting? (The reason why I don't want to root is that I heard it voids the warranty). Please reply with any information you think might be useful, as I have found these buttons to be frustrating when I play any game.

You need to root, but otherwise try shaking your phone vigorously for 5 seconds, with the screen turned to 69% brightness, to disable the soft keys.

Funny, but not helpful. If I root is there a way to revert back to stock without google knowing I rooted the phone?

Well I use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.tsorn.FullScreen but u need to be rooted. U can always unroot your device if u send it back in for warranty reasons.

Use this guide to root, and you can also use it to return to stock should you need to for warranty reasons.

Also this is my first android phone, previously coming from a bad nokia phone so I have no idea how to root. Do you know what the easiest root is? When I jailbroke my iPod touch it just took a single click, no messing around with the command prompt and moving around files. So basically where would be the best place to get a root toolkit for my nexus 4 with something like a one click root, and a one click backup?

There is only 1 way to root a Nexus, unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom recovery, it is very easy once you start and very unlikely to go wrong, it will wipe your data though.
And its even easier to return to stock as Google provide factory images.

So there is no "one click to root" tool kit for the nexus 4? All I want is those softkeys to get out of my way when I play games, other than that the phone is fine. I don't want to ruin my nexus 4 by getting it into a bootloop or bricking it, and since there are so many steps to unlock the bootloader and root the device, I am bound to mess up somewhere.

you don't want to be using a one click... chances of boot loops and you won't be learning anything about rooting. Feel free to use the Nexus toolkit, but good luck solving that pesky boot loop. The guide I linked is really easy to follow, PM me and I'll write a really simple step by step, and if you get teamviewer i will watch you do it, and stop you going wrong.:fingers-crossed:

Rooting with a custom recovery will break OTA, but the app won't. But since the app needs root, basically yeah

I think I will just wait until the next version of android comes out (version 5) so that I will not have to re-root, and for now I will just have to put up with those annoying softkeys. I would really want to see google include a gesture option for hiding/showing those buttons as I don't think I am the only one here that hates accidentally touching them during games.

Well, that's not until May, and then you'll have to root anyway, so why not learn now?

Okay, I have now rooted my nexus 4 and everything seems to be working great. Thank you all for your help and suggestions, I appreciate how nice everyone here is on the XDA developer forums.

we try to be, also try to keep atleast one rom on your device, say if you accidentally have a bad flash for whatever reason, you will have something you know that works, or keep a nandroid backup

ROM and clockwork question

hey everyone, Im a newbie when It comes to roms and flashing, I currently have clockwork mod and stock 4.4.4 and wanted to ask will I get the official lollipop? Even if I have clockwork mod? But stock KitKat? Thank you for reading

as far as i know, and that can be wrong, if your android is untouched (no root or anything else (like xposes framwork)) you will get the update over the air.
BUT if you don't there are factory images that you can download and flash your phone quite easily

i would recommend to do it with the first method. if something goes wrong you will know what is it and you can ask for help. with the toolkit if something goes wrong things are more complicated to find the error.
P.S. if you decide installing the factory images via console (first option), it is highly recommended to read the entire process first and after do the procedure.

My phone is rooted, but i dont have any custom ROMs or framework , will this affect it? Or when I get the update my root will simply be gone?

You'll lose root and the custom recovery with the ota. But if you haven't modified / deleted any system files you should get the ota.

I've searched some threads and some said you don't get ota if you have clockwork mod (I have it) and I really don't know what to do...should I go back to stock? I'm not good with that stuff and afraid I will brick it, any ideas or advice?

You should be ok. If you're really worried about cwm you could flash the stock recovery image in fastboot. But I wouldn't unless the ota fails, which it shouldn't

Alright, thank you again for clearing things up!

It's also worth noting that Google pushes update at different times depending on which area you live in, so even if you read on the news that Lollypop is released on the Nexus 4, it may take a while for your phone to receive the OTA.

Personally, I advice you to install TWRP recovery, its safe and easy to install kernels and roms

Just bought a Nexus 7!

I'm excited to say that I have finally invested in a tablet and decided to go with the Nexus 7 that I bought for a GREAT price! I am curious about rooting and s-off etc. I was curious if there was any information that I needed to be aware of in regards to not being able to root or s-off with updates. I would really like to have a smooth experience with accomplishing root on my Nexus but I know there could be some bumps in the road . Any information or links to threads etc. are much appreciated, I haven't unboxed yet just due to the fact that I want to make sure I can root it without it auto updating something.

Just be sure the toolkit updates itself to latest version.
You need to first "unlock the bootloader". I would recommend to do that in the beginning because it will wipe your device.
Personally i had best experience with stock kitkat 4.4.4 rooted and all unneccessary software disabled. I dont like volume adjustment on lollipop 5.0.2 but i always update to latest version just for fun.

IMHO the best thing with Nexus is you'll always get the latest official rom. I have only used stock but feel free to experiment.
On my phone with 4.4.4 I use stock with xposed framework. Some great modules there. However i read that xposed is not yet ready for 5.0.2.

I suggest the elementalx kernel. And if you want a (improved) stock experience go for Cleanrom.

From what I remember from my HTC Wildfire days, S-OFF = Unlocking the bootloader.
If I'm wrong, can someone explain the difference

S-Off is a HTC thing. Here you dont need to S-Off.

Can you confirm something. When did you get your Nexus 7 and from where. There have been problems with recently released Nexus 7 tabs from Groupon, Frys, and Best Buy that have made things difficult to do things like flash. There was a revision in google/asus latest batch that makes mounting any partitions/memory difficult.

Just out of curiosity, and to just make sure we are all on the same page. You got the 2013 (2nd gen) Nexus 7, correct? Being this is your first Nexus Device, and tablet if you weren't aware there is a Nexus 7 2012, and 2013.
Probably a dumb question, but don't want to link you to all these things and have you brick your Nexus because it was the wrong gen. Enjoy, thing is awesome.

I have been running CleanROM since I have been able to flash. Smooth, snappy and very stable I highly recommend the ROM to those that have not flashed it yet.

I got my Nexus 7 close to two weeks ago from Wal-Mart for an AWESOME price. They had it on sale for $125 and I had to grab it, there was no way I was going to pass up on that deal. I have only flashed CleanROM on my N7 so far and I haven't had any issues. Thanks for the links!

Thanks for the info. I'm still doing a bunch of reading trying to learn as much as I can being this is my first tablet. This device can do so much I'm trying not to get ahead of myself. If I wanted to flash a new rom/kernal what should I wipe in TWRP and in what order? Thanks in advance.

Its been a month... So I assume you are sorted but in case you aren't... To ensure cleanest install, wipe data and cache through twrp then flash new ROM. This will delete your data so back it up first if there is anything you want on it.
If ROM is from same family.... You can try dirty flashing ( ie not wiping data ) but it may end in boot loop or force closes in apps... I always just wipe as it ensures clean install to give you best experience with the ROM.

About roms.
Either stock/CM. I am using cm12.1 latest build on android 5.1.1 with elementalX kernel. Very smooth.
Remember:TWRP>>>>>>>CWM

Every ROM is good that I've flashed. Only had this about a week but loving it.
My phone is a lg and is a pos when it comes to **** not working with aosp
Plan on buying nothing but nexus from now on,feels weird having everything working, and working well. In a weird kinda way....

Real newbie help needed

Hi all
I know you probably get this a lot but could really do with some help.
Basically my wife has a nexus 7 2012 and it's become unusable now since lollypop. I have tried factory reset etc but it's still so slow. I have decided I'd like to delve into the rooting game and see if this will solve the problem.
I have a nexus 7 2013 so if I am honest if I brick it then I won't be devastated because she can always use mine so decided to bite the bullet and try.
I am not expecting a walk through guide but is there any good way to try and start this? I am quite techy but I know nothing about rooting let alone where to start.
I kind of understand roms and I want a basic one that will make her nexus workable again.
Any help on how I go about starting this whole rooting would be appointed.

Are you on 5.1.1? If not get that update fixed my 2012 & 2013 right up! If not, search for "nexus root tool kit". That's what I use without a hitch! But try the update first, it may just do the trick.

An easy way to root is by using the nexus root toolkit by wugfresh, a good rom to try is chroma also mkernel works well with the stock rom. Make sure you make a backup before you start flashing anything .

Hey gang. Good to see you all. Been around the way for a while and decided to come to the 6p Instead of paying too much for a pixel and I personally like to stay out of contract for the discount on my plan.
Just looking for verification... Can I use wugs to root and unlock and or Heisenberg post? I am on 7.1.1 nmf26f.
Also can anyone tell me the best choice for a pretty stock debloated ROM with good kernel combo. I have read so many things and yes I know it is all about preference etc. Just looking for some quick suggestions so I can try and do this all when I get in from work.

I am on stock ROM N4F26J with TWRP and Franco Kernel. Everything is running very fine and smooth.
I also rooted to run apps that need it.

Heisenberg post guide works a treat. Also, Cortex, Nitrogen, Tupaks, etc. are good rom starting points...

Welcome. You should first consider updating to the latest build, which would be N4F26J for Verizon. Depending on your level of experience, you can use either NRT or the Heisenberg post. Obviously, the toolkit is faster with less chance for mistakes, but at some point you're going to need and use ADB. Recommend you do keep the bootloader unlocked permanently so that you retain the ability to use ADB/NRT at any time. Don't worry about the persistent nag warning at boot about locking your bootloader- that is normal. Since you are about to factory reset your device to unlock, this is the time you should also consider whether you want the default data encryption, or wish to run unencrypted. I also recommend you install FlashFire as one of your first root apps and learn how to use it. I currently have 3 Nexus devices which are stock, rooted and use EX Kernel. Best of luck to you.

I'd also suggest using Heisenberg's guide. For ROM and kernel combo I highly recommend Pure Nexus and EX or Flash kernel.
